7:00 am
waking up to a major snowstorm hitting the region, and here is a live look outside. this is in cape may where we have just hit the first high tide of the storm, and you can see the flooding. we have reporters in cape may and in atlantic city to show you what's happening. this is a very developing happening right now kind of situation showing you the conditions there. >> it's windy outside. look at first alert radar, all the purpose the out there, bottom of the screen, white
7:01 am
covering the rest of it, that snowfall, we're seeing it now from the shore up the coast, and even to the poconos. good saturday morning, welcome to nbc 10 news today, i'm keith jones. >> i'm tracy davidson. >> we have live coverage couldncounty by county. before that, though, we want to show you what we know right now. the major snowstorm knocked out power for portions of new jersey, south jersey, atlantic city electric reports close to 16,000 customers without it in cape may county and several more many atlantic county. talking to transportation officials saying the roads are getting worse. listen, don't drive if you don't have to, and listen to us for live continued coverage all day long through 6:30 tonight. >> we want to update you on snow totals coming in and predictions. we have the storm, what's happening right now?
7:02 am
>> intensifying. strong, gusty wind, and blizzard conditions for the area. strong gusty winds continue all day long. winds have already gusting at more than 40 miles per hour in philadelphia. slippery conditions and low visibility and coastal flooding, that's a threat right now because of the wind gusts at the shore that are even stronger than what we are seeing in philadelphia. look at northeast philadelphia, 44 miles per hour gusts. excuse me, georgetown at 48 miles per hour gusts, and louis, delaware has steady winds at 59 miles per hour, and winds gusting more than 70 miles per hour creating a storm surge there of four feet. that's water that's being blown from the ocean. there's an area getting a break from the rain, but it's raining in delaware and louis seeing flooding as a result of the strong gusty winds.
7:03 am
rain returning to cape may, but this dry slot, which is common in major storms like this, is reaching now into montgomery county through philadelphia getting a temporary break in the snowfall. you can see there's areas of heavier snowfall including upper montgomery bucks county and lehigh valley and north hampton county this morning. look at the winds blowing the flag here at the nbc 10 studios. this is a much improved view. you see snow, the visibility's better than when was on the air at 4:00 this morning. first couple hours, could hardly see anything. that's the dry slot reaching the area. that said, steady winds stay with us. winds of 30 miles per hour or more right on into the afternoon. gusts that could be as high as 50 miles per hour inland. temperatures below freezing in the philadelphia area. it's going to be all snow for philadelphia. those areas getting a break from the snow? they are going to see more snow develop as the day goes on.
7:04 am
tracking what to expect, karen thomas has the look ahead. karen? >> bill, yes. we are watching the snow continue. some parts of the region, heavier snow just now picking up. we expect heavy snowfalling in other parts of the region as we move through the afternoon much what i'm saying is north and west of philadelphia, likely to see as we get closer to the noontime hour, heaviest snowfall yet. what this model shows us is the additional accumulation we expect. you see the time stamp there. by 12:00, expect 8 additional inches for philadelphia. we tracked our measurement outside the nbc 10 studios. we're just over 10 inches so we'd add to that. here's 4:00. we'll add additional accumulations, and looks like an additional 17 inches of snowfall in allentown. take additional 18 in doylestown at 4:00, and it goes on as the snow continues to fall. again, by 6:00, we look for 20
7:05 am
inches of snowfall than what's already on the ground right now. so the snow is certainly here to stay as we move through the saturday and into saturday evening as the accumulations continue. future snow just to check the rain/snow line. this is what we talked about. look at the time stamp. look at 2:00. the rain/snow line actually just sinks back to the south so it's pushing north at this moment turning rain to cape may and parts of southern delaware, but that's expected to retreat, if you will, to the south, and it's bringing more snow now. you know, by 2:00. as we get closer to the evening hours, additional snow accumulation down in southern delaware and south jersey. so by 4:00 a.m., it's off the coast for everybody, and we begin the windy dry out. i thought this was interesting. the top five philadelphia snowstor
7:06 am
snowstorms, blizzard of '96. how could we forget that? with this storm, we could dump into the top five snowstorms. we are likely to include this storm in the top ten philadelphia storms. back with more numbers breaking things down for you continually throughout the hour. >> karen, thanks. heavy snow and high winds reduce visibility. look behind us. visibility's improved, believe it or not over the last hour or so, but that's usually a beautiful look at the philadelphia skyline. not so much this morning. >> not at all. i walked two and a half blocks away into the studio. let's go now to n 10 right outside on the patio there. we can attest to this. crazy conditions out there, just blowing wind and snow. how is it now, mitch? >> oh, same thing, keith. it's snow -- the snow is kind of subsided at this point. it's a lull in the snow, but the wind, it's just hammering constantly nonstop.
7:07 am
snow drifts on the nbc 10 patio, here, a brick wall, not enough protection to prevent some of these snow drifts that are at least two feet high at this point. out here on city avenue, we have snowplow after snowplow, constant stream of snowplows, and, earlier, we drove around in the city at 3:00 and 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning, seeing philadelphia using every piece of equipment they could think of to put a plow on, garbage trucks, dump trucks, all plowing snow doing a good job keeping up with it. even now on city avenue, you can see the pavement as we're experiencing a lull. ultimately, we came back out here to the city avenue patio because the battery in our car started to die, and we needed to get back because the car was not going to operate anymore in these conditions. that's the latest on city avenue. for now, back to you guys in the
7:08 am
studio. >> all right, mitch, thanks. we continue team coverage in delaware. officials tell people too stay indoors, out of the storm, and off the roads. in fact, we were just updated saying with the crews working, with the winds, blowing snow back on the roads, drifting snow, heavy snowfall, major roads are still impassablimpass. a live look at wilmington right now. >> blue rocks camera in wilmington. that's i-95, because of the road conditions, dart will not run statewide bus routes for the elderly and disabled, and the septa lines suspended today. >> tim furlong is monitoring the road conditions, and you can attest to what jim told us from deldot, even the majors are not good. >> reporter: major are not good 301 was awful. newark, a lot of breakfast spots i would love to hit today, are
7:09 am
not open today. it's a ghost town in newark. kelly bachman they have seven or eight plows out at the same time. all streets plowed eed in newa but the drifts makes it difficult. contractors are clearing both sides of main street, and they are about to start round two. we passed a plow truck way up there in the distance, brake lights, that's a plow truck as well. a few calls, minor calls for stuck vehicles. difference in newark is that they do their own plowing. deldot handles a vast majority, but in newark, they handle their own. they are doing a good job. it is passable, but they have gone through this, and as quickly as they are, it piles back up again. you see we have the green light here, we are moving along, the jeep doing okay in the condition, not a big deal in newark. i've been checking the power
7:10 am
app. power does not seem to be too big an issue up here in the northern part of delaware. thousands lost power in the delaware beaches. i checked the map. they know what's beginning on. they are working on the situations. again, they have the high gusty winds there, flooding issues, and 7:00 a.m. was high tide, so there's a lot of stuff, and a lot of varying conditions you see up and down the state, and it's something we'll watch throughout the day. live in storm force10, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> we'll get you updated, but also from the jersey shore, and now look at this from chester county. the snowstorm hampered firefighters fighting a house fire in downing township in chester county. fisherville road, fire started at 1:30 this morning, and the ladder froze, they needed a salt truck to plow a truck out of the snow. >> we deal with a lot of
7:11 am
difficult situations, but i will tell you this is the most challenges we've experienced as a fire company. >> the fire started in the chimney. no one in the home hurt, but a firefighter treated for a minor injury. accident, one of the many examples of thing we see on the roadways. this is 422 eastbound in come ri county, taken from the side of the road as we drove by happening overnight near oaks. you see someone on the side of the road. they stopped. trouble with that, you get in an accident, you stall, but the snow does not stop. this is an example. if you don't have to be on the road, stay away. >> dangerous to be stuck on the side of the road with the conditions outside, but yet we've seen accidents like that and cars that are stuck in drifts. nbc 10 traffic reporter has an update on what she sigh sees from all the cameras. >> i was wondering moments ago why there was not more accidents, especially with the slippery conditions, and it's because some of you are listening, and a lot of people are not driving on the roadways
7:12 am
so there's not a lot of collisions happening. what we see happening are cars moving off, drifting into the shoulder, rolling down the offramp, stuck on the side, and this is the vine tree expressway, turned around to face this disabled truck that's been here for about two hours, and this is pretty much the majority of what we are seeing now, cars not able to navigate around the roadways. off the offramp, the back roads, more delay, and less plowed areas than normal. now, you can see the disabled vehicle on the side. this is a list of the disabled vehicles counted, 20 over the last half hour, and they disappear and come back because the cars just keep getting stuck. chester county, upper moreland, and in new jersey, the same story, disabled vehicles in the areament right here, okay on route 42 and new jersey turnpike. every once in a while, a plow truck goes through, giving us a
7:13 am
hopeful vantage point for later in the evening. >> thanks for that. much more to come. this is a live look at 15 and market in center city. crews plowing the sidewalk. we are tracking the storm you see on the left hand side, tracking it on radar, and keeping you updated with the latest snow totals and power outages still to come.
7:14 am
the republicans in harrisburg were fighting each other over the state budget. that's right. each other. the republican state senate passed a responsible budget that "begins" to fund education but the republican house of representatives has insisted on a budget that fails to fund education and balloons the deficit. call your legislator, tell them to pass a budget that's right for pennsylvania.
7:15 am
7:16 am
in atlantic county, southern delaware hit hard. 5400 sussex county customers in the dark, and, also, the roads, talking to transportation officials, they say the roads are only getting worse. there is drifting. they are having a hard time keeping up getting the majors cleared. they people stay off the roads, stay home, don't go out unless you have to. count on us for live, continuous coverage all day. with you every step of the way every hour. showing you what you need to see and updated information. we'll be here through 6:30 tonight. >> there's a lot of snow, bad roads, anding accidents, too, but down the shore, people brace for flooding in high tides, and some towns already experiencing it. >> we are live in wildwood experiencing it. drew, show us the conditions. >> i can barely hear you because of the intense winds. i wanted to show how the sichgsz changed since we last joined you.
7:17 am
there's a few inches of water on the street. this is ocean avenue. wind is howling, looks like rapids on the river. all the snow is moving out of here. looking like it's not snowed here. there's a little left here. that is mixed with sand and some of the foam you see there is coming off of the ocean. this is about high tide, what we expected to see at this point. good news, people are not driving. we heard from the police who told us they shut down the north access to the island, route 149 is shut down now because of worse flooding that's further on down in that direction. there were police activity over there. they were worried that some folks might have got caught up in that. right now, roads ared off at this point. where we are, the concern is
7:18 am
that some of the ocean water is going to continue to breach the dune, and, again, take a closer look over here, you can see that color on top of the remaining snow snt street. that is all sand blowing in, and the sand is hitting us in the face. we can tell you, it's not nice to be out here walking around. watching rising water in the streets in the area. one more look around down here. you can just see how the wind is whipping the water down southerly towards wildwood from where we are to north wildwood. >> concerned about the high tides and high winds. let's look at people getting cars off the snow route. snow emergency routes in center city, philadelphia. snow emergency declared, so people have to get the cars off the routes or be towed.
7:19 am
ticketed and towed. you had warning about this. do it. it's important. you're going to get towed. >> 14 hours into the storm. let's check in with billy. leading to flooding concerns at the shore, storm surge from new jersey to delaware this morning, and the winds, seen as high as 60, 66 miles per hour for the jersey shore, and topping sixty in southern delaware, and 72 gusts for louis, delaware, and the gusts will be intensifying this morning. around high tide now, and delawares have a storm surge of more than four feet. high tide, just a couple minutes past that, but it elevated the
7:20 am
water with sturch of three feet in cape may area, and off the high tide now, but in each location, we got to watch the high tides for this evening and possibly tomorrow morning, all dependent on the wind, onshore winds that continue. there's been a break at times from cape may, but it's moving back in. we saw the break in delaware. now there's snow falling in dover, and just to the south in southern delaware, and in the cape may area and atlantic city area, it all started as snow. well, it's still snow in at lap tick city. the rain is offshore. it's a wet snow. a heavy snow that extends well inland. there is dry areas covering south jersey and philadelphia area, a temporary drying or easing of the storm. we expect more heavy snow to fill back in the philadelphia area. for now, that heavier snowfall
7:21 am
is falling to the north, at times, through bucks county. we have seen heavy snow, and into the lehigh valley, and right now, coming down in the area in burlington county. heavy snowfall. that said, this is a change that we didn't have first thing this morning. we could not even see across the delaware because of the blowing snow and very limited visibility. this is an issue during the day, especially in inland areas where the snow is not well because the temperatures are colder for philadelphia and areas north and west. it's going to be easier to blow around, reduce visibility at times to zero during the day today. all right, a look ahead now. karen thomas is in with that. karen, what are we looking at right now? >>, bill, we check snow accumulations as they come in, and right now, nearly a foot of snow has fallen in new jersey. we want to go ahead and see how much more snow to expect in the various areas across the region, and as we put future snowcast into motion, you see that rain/snow line there down in
7:22 am
southern delaware as well as well as just off the shoreline there of cape may, but the heavy bands of snow at 2:00 today, falling northwest at fifth, and then we still have snow falling in large portion of the coverage area, and the system is out of here in the early hours. okay, regionally region, what to expect. in delaware county and chester county, this is it right now. this is inclusive of what's already on the ground between 17-23 inches across the area, just south of pottstown, and king of prussia area, and looking in wagner, concord, look for the same swath of 18-23 inches, and then with isolated areas moving right through westchester, embedded 23 i'ms of snowfall once it's said and done. look at the shore, the beaches,
7:23 am
we know 4-8 inches of snowfall already came, turned over to rain, and more is expected down there later on today as the massive system continues to push northeast. in atlantic city, total accumulations there, again, the rain/snow line continues to push to the north, but then it will retreat. back with more numbers in a bit. >> all right, karen, thanks. the region is slammed by the major storm, we knew it was coming, now it's happening. snow accumulating, high winds, and power outages, getting you numbers, covered with what you seed to know. >> a live picture from cape may. the county's experiencing a storm surge of feet. in fact, you see some of it happening already. there is flooting this morning, and it's not over yet. more strong wind, heavy snow expected throughout the day, but rest assured, we are here with you throughout every step of the way. city with us as we continue to track this major storm.
7:24 am
7:26 am
this is 95 in newark, delaware. pennsylvania, new jersey, delaware, under a blizzard warning because of the heavy snow and high winds there. stormforce 10 going down the road, 95, you see just one pathway there. the plows can't keep up with all the snow that's coming down. it is not a good thing if you're on the roads, trying to clear the roads, but the winds make it
7:27 am
tough for crews. >> i've been getting great pictures tweeted. upload your photos with our nbc 10 app, see it, share it, look for that, tweet us, post on facebook, #nbc10snow, and rosemary connors is here with the pictures from across the region. >> viewers in the home, not out on the roads, looking at what's happening outside, and sending it to us for a better idea what the conditions are in their neighborhood. let's look at the pictures. actually, you know, we'll try to get back to the pictures in a moment. as i mentioned, we have folks sending them to us from the city to the suburbs. in the meantime, if you have a few minutes, snap photos just outside your door or window. please send them to us, you heard tracy mention you can do
7:28 am
it through the app or nbc10.com. >> a live look at radar. there's a swath of blue and white on the screen. looking at, dealing with that right now. we have snow that's been coming in through the overnight hours, and we know it's not letting up any time soon. as we heard from bill henley and karen thomas, some areas are seeing some breaks in the weather, but guess what, this is not over yet. >> thank you very much. we have this video right now. crews clearing snow at the mall there. plows, snow blowers, all in action. look at the pictures you see. consta constantly. more and more snow coming down, winds blowing it around.
7:29 am
i walked in here outside philadelphia, and what i saw was snow blowing across the avenue, which had not been plowed. we were out there on the patio. we are on live through 6:30. see a lot of snow, there's so much more to come. >> there is. some areas are seeing heavy snow while others are getting a break, a dry slot, common in a storm like this, and has worked through parts of south jersey and into the philadelphia area. that's why when you guys look behind you on those big monitors back there, you can see across the river, that's improved visibility. is not a blizzard condition. you see blizzards where the visibility is coming down. one of the areas, the pocono mountains, snow is blowing past the camera. it's not particularly heavy. there is snow now on the otherwise completely green trees in the mountains. this is blue mountain.
7:30 am
they've made a lot of the snow. that's what you see on the ground, but they'll get a good amount from the storm system as it moves through during the day today. one of the indicators that we look for for how much snow is coming down is the visibility and the visibility's down to a quarter mile, combination of snowfall and strong gusty winds, and it's improved in coatesville as the snow is taking a break now for parts of the area. there's more heavy snowfall to come. >> thank you. this is market street. one thing you see a lot of is snow, and you don't see cars out there. no plows at the moment either, but i promise that they are out there. stay with us on air, and on nbc 10 app for totals, what to expect as the storm intensifies, and share pictures and videos with us. itst a great way for us to cover neighborhood by neighborhood what this storm is looking like. just use our nbc 10 app, and if you use social media, use
7:33 am
at 7:33, a major snow storm in the area, stormforce 10, nbc 10 tim furlong showing us the condition in delaware. the snow falling, winds whipping, department of transportation struggling with the crews because of the wind piling up snow. >> this is the poconos. you they are working out there on the slopes. you see the snow blowing as well. i think they there in the distance. if not, they are seeing actually less snow than we are here in philadelphia.
7:34 am
we are expecting 17-23, maybe more as far as snow coverage is concerned. a live picture here, this time, on the ground. >> good morning, welcome to nbc 10 news today. we have you covered. i'm si davidson. >> i'm keith jones. we have coverage county by county, and we are tracking the storm throughout the region. before we get to them, here's what we know so far. the storm is knocking out power in some portions of the region. atlantic electric reporting 19,000 out with several more, and southern delaware hit hard, 5400 sussex county customers in the dark. we talked to officials all morning as well, and the roads are only getting worse. that's what you need to know. don't drive if you don't have to. count on nbc 10 for live continuous coverage all day long through 6:30 tonight. now is a time to download the app. if you lose power, see the
7:35 am
power-up stations so you can go and charge devices. let's get you updated on the snow that's coming down. first alert meteorologist has been tracking it. what's happening now, bill? >> translator: intensity is changing over the last couple hours. we'll see more of the strong, gusty winds that led to the power outages, and i expect the number to go up. we still could see blizzard conditions at times in the day today with strong gusty winds, and it's already slippery, even with a little of snow on the ground, those areas that get plowed, more falls, very slippery conditions issue and some areas with zero visibility, low visibility comets this afternoon. coastal flooding, speciousing that this morning with the first high tide in the delaware beaches, rain, steady rain, now back in louis where they saw gusts up 72 miles per hour this morning. now, rainy again in cape may. it started off as snow this morning, and now we we want on air at 4:00, and atlantic city is seeing the changeover with
7:36 am
rain moving in, but look at this dry slot that is now made it into south philadelphia and much lighter precipitation into bucks county where we saw some heavier snowfall on the ground first thing, in fact, parts of bucks county already seeing a foot on the ground. in fact, in the doylestown area, a foot of snow for jamison, more than 10 inches in the studio, and 9 in singing spring, and more snow on the way. that wind, that'll be a challenge all day long. winds will continue right on into this afternoon, and a steady, strong gusty wind in the day today, and that finally backs off a little bit this evening. and before it does, we've got more snow on the way. meteorologist karen thomas is here with that. karen? >> all right, bill, thank you. as you said, the snow continues into some areas, picking up heavier in the afternoon, and it has everybody asking, how much snow add i expected to get? our snow total maps shows us
7:37 am
1-23 inches total snow accumulation by tomorrow morning is expected. you see the blue watt here, the numbers areteresting to think our average total seasonal snowfall for philadelphia is 22 inches. we'll nail it in one system. 8-12 by the shoreline, and 12-17 north and west. chester county, these are snow totals you can expect. the heaviest snow2a has not ev rial finished off in the areas. more heavy snow expected, and look at that isolated swath there through westchester, just clipping garnet and concord township. 23-28 inches of snowfall possible. we'll keep breaking that down for you and we'll just span the region, if you will, and show you your total accumulation and what to expect throughout the day. >> all right, karen, thank you. talking about the snow coming
7:38 am
down and high winds and poor visibility. usually you see the skyline beautiful behind us. it's really hard to see. very poor visibility. if that looks like that, you can imagine what it's like on the roads. >> looking outside our studios here at nbc 10, and mitch is live in montgomery county. last we checked 15 minutes ago, there was a lull in the snow. you were not seeing it. i know from walking into work, though, the wind is blowing. >> reporter: it's about the. the wind is the big problem at this point. also, there's a few little small little snow pellets coming down, almost, like, like balls of ice. i don't know that you call them hail, but they have a heft to them, and you can hear them pelting on your hood, on your clothes as you stand out here, but the wind is the real issue. the lull has continued. it's allowed crews to get to the side roads. monument road off of city avenue, and, for example, this
7:39 am
parking lot behind the studios, they have a chance to dig out. city avenue down the way here, you can see there is asphalt, you can see the pavement. we've still seen cars get stuck coming up the hill, but this lull in the storm seems to have given the crews an advantage and allowed them to clean up some of the snow in advance what's to come. >> mitch, thanks. we continue in delaware where officials are telling us that stay off the roads. deldot updated us last hour say with the crews working, mitch said it is about the wind. with the crews working, the winds blows snow on the road making clearing difficult so the roads are treacherous. >> this is a picture from bluerock stadium in wilmington, that's i-95. see what looks to be a utility vehicle in the background right
7:40 am
now. because of the treacherous conditions, dart will not run statewide bus routes for the elder ll lly and disabled. >> someone out experiencing the conditions in stormforce 10, tim furlong live in bear, south of the mall, monitoring the roads, again, in stormforce ten, a four-wheel drive, hefty vehicle, still feeling the winds? >> reporter: we sure are. in fact, a lot of you on social media say you shouldn't be out either. i want to assure everyone, we're careful. wii wii only going 30 miles per hour at most, and we're out here, never getting in the way of plows. making that clear. this is delaware 1. look at the black top. we have not seen that much today of the that shows how hard they are working. the orange army has been up and down the main roads all day, but, again, the wind is, like you said, coming off the middle of the road there, the winds kick the snow back in before you know it, and in a few minutes, back covering the roads and
7:41 am
drifts. even we have a lull in the snow, and that stops snowing a little, it doesn't matter because the winds bring it from the grassy area and back on the road. wherever you drive in delaware, again, you don't want to in delaware. another thing i'm getting a lot of interaction with people down south of the state who are up all night with the heavy winds, and they have not had the snow, but they had flooding down there in the delaware beaches, water over the board walk, and so it's -- it's a bad situation all over the state, and the conditions vary depending where you go. we are going to a news conference with the governor. it's going to take us awhile because you see now, again, the roads are covered again, thanks mostly, to the wind. the winds are the issue here. every time deldot gets ahead, here comes the wind to cover it back over. we'll drive safely, and pretty soon, have the governor's news conference for you to see if it's going to a driviing restriction. all driving personnel off the
7:42 am
road. that's not in place right now. live in stormforce 10, nbc 10 news. >> tim, keep us updated. we continue to show you the road conditions. take a look at i-95, the right hand side of the screen there. poor visibility. on the left hand side of the screen, the snowstorm we track for you. our team of meteorologists say they are expecting the snow to intensify in areas this afternoon. we'll keep you updated in the latest totals, outages, and where to plug in devices if you lose power. that information still ahead.
7:45 am
we are live in atlantic city, taking a beating, and seeing what is resulting from all of this wind, sleet, snow, storm surge, matt? >> reporter: well, tracy and keith, we moved over to the atlantic city marina. you can see we are now an hour after high tide, and this water, look how close it is to the dock. i mean, right now, we are a foot from the dock, and at this point, it is starting to recede. look here. you see people on the boat, and it looks like they are trying to pull up lines or something there. there are people actually in the marina right now on their boats. the winds are very powerful. you hear them now. look at dr right, actually,
7:46 am
before the video, i don't know if we went there, but this is -- this is what we are experiencing here, folks, just a very, heavy, strong, gusting winds, and i'm just going to read off from the national weather service here, the atlantic city international airport, some of the numbers here, at 6:54, 30 miles per hour sustained winds with gusts up to 46 miles per hour. i've seen numbers here going up to 47 miles per hour, 48 miles per hour earlier this morning. we are having wind gusts upwards of 55 0 miles per hour at the shore. now for the video. this was an hour ago. we were driving. very treacherous conditions on the roads. don't be on the roads if you don't have to. there was a lot of flooding on the streets, mostly because of the ponding on the roadways. the slush plugged the drains. there was nowhere for it to go
7:47 am
