this storm shifted today. in new jersey people leaving their homes to try to escape rising floodwaters. a look in wildwood tonight. it could bring in another devastating wall of waves. in delaware, wilmington where several more hours expected as that person there shoveling some of it. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfeld. >> look outside. winter storm we've been warning you out all week is living up to or exceeding expectations. >> here are headlines. we just learned the blizzard turned deadly in the area. an 88-year-old montgomery county man died as he was shoveling snow in lower providence. as far as power outages, 30,000 people in the dark in south jersey, the majority of them in cape may county. pennsylvania and delaware reporting a handful of outages. high tide just after 7:00 tonight so floodwaters at the shore are on their way back up.

>> our team of reporters spread out across our region to bring you stories of the storm's impact. that impact is two main parks. first, the snow. it's creating whiteout conditions. you can see drivers slowly in allentown. visibility is extremely low. here is the other part of the story. worst flooding since hurricane sandy for parts of the jersey shore. take a look at what this done has done to sea isle city. water rushing down the road. ted live. >> this could get worse about an hour from now, right? >> yeah. tim, exactly. the water is coming up again. look what we still have. we have high water. the high tide is going to be coming up on top of the water we already have. this is 25th and delaware in

north wildwood. you see somebody trying to make it through the water. not necessarily a good idea. this is all saltwater that came out of the back bay. there's a parked car right next to it. i'm going to say it's pretty safe to say that car has been inundated and good chance it's very damaged at this point. the mayor of wildwood told me a short time ago that probably severe property damage in this area especially when it comes to cars. this has really been a serious situation. the worst flooding here than they saw in super storm sandy. look what the mayor told us just a short time ago. >> i'll tell you, a heck of a lot more serious than it was during sandy. we had a lot of water come up from the back bay. we had water in the northern end of the county that caught new jersey, pacific avenue and working its way to atlantic. >> reporter: so again, all eyes

on the next high tide coming up shortly this evening. about 200 people, i'm told, are currently at a shelter that's been set up at woodbine developmental center. they have come from various barrier island communities here in cape may county. live in north wildwood, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. flooding also impacting the delaware coastline. this is what happens when a dune is breached. ocean water rushing through the streets of dewey beach. to pennsylvania where snow is still falling at this hour. this is what it looks like trying to drive through upper hannover township in montgomery county. doug shimell tracking counties. >> live in lehigh county. doug, how are things looking out there now? >> the sun is going down, now the wind and snow are completely obscuring visibility. you can see snow blowing through

the toll plaza here, northeast extension intersects with route 22. of course turnpike authority plow crews have been trying their best to keep the northeast extension clear but the snow just seems to stay ahead of any public works department, falling faster than they can clear it away. this is a big stabling area, of course they are not here now, for tow trucks. they have been pulling in and out of here as they get calls for cars stuck on on ramps. calls on the scanner, oddities, a man on foot disoriented and lost in whiteout conditions using gps and the phone died. a short while ago medics called to a house where a woman was delivering a baby in the middle of a snowstorm. live in south whitehall township, i'm doug shimell, nbc 10 news. members of temples women's gymnastics team are among those left stranded in storms on the

pennsylvania turnpike. they have been out there since last night. more than 80 miles of the turnpike have been closed. the national guard it's helping emergency crews rescue people from about 500 vehicles. >> let's get a look at road conditions in south coventry chester county, harry hairston in skyforce 10. harry. >> vus out of south coventry into the border of north coventry. here is what conditions look like, they are treacherous around here. we've been running into some snowplows earlier. they can't seem to stay ahead, snow constantly accumulating. we've seen a couple of vehicles trying to get up and down had road but it's very nasty out here. we are in some difficult times where plows haven't been here in a long time. back to you in the studio. >> you can see that in the pictures, live pictures there from harry hairston storm force 10. difficult out there.

>> and the storm is far from over. >> chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. you're back now. you've been tracking this storm. how much more snow to come, glenn. >> a few hours in some areas, it will take until midnight in other parts of the area before it's all over with. being dark, it's even harder to see where you're going. travel is certainly not recommended. it's still snowing all over the place, all over our pennsylvania counties, although it's not as heavy in the lehigh valley as it was. we still have moderate snow in bucks county and montgomery county. heavier snow from delaware complaint moving into newcastle county, delaware. wilmington just got hit with some and more southward to pensville. we also had some heavy snow in lower bucks county. that's moved across the river toward the jersey turnpike near willingboro and lumberton will the amount of snow, 32 inches in

south allentown from the meteorologist so i buy it. if it's anywhere near that officially in allentown, set an all-time record. king of pressure, 20, have to wait for the official report but they are getting some decent snow now, so it's i'm sure more than that. 24 inches in phoenixville, martins creek 23.2. and earlier this afternoon, it was 21.2 at lehigh valley airport. so they undoubtedly set a record. talk more about the timing of when this all ends and about that threat of major flooding again at the shore in just a few minutes. >> well, not everyone stayed indoors.

bellmawr, camden county, see a family seizing the opportunity and have some fun and go sledding. >> joining us live on the latest conditions in wilmington county. randy. >> i can tell you we're back to ski goggle conditions in delaware. this is crazy. it's been snowing for 24 hours and it's picked up yet again like a blizzard. i'm joined by kathy cahill. you're trying to shovel snow. what are you trying to do to keep safe and measured out in the cold. >> i take my time. when i lift, i lift with my knees bent so i won't strain my back. >> it's almost a losing battle? >> qule, but i'm making a little progress. >> walk over to her yard here. this is incredible, her car on the right side, no snow. the car on the left side is completely covered with snow because the wind has been sweeping it in that direction. we've got, i don't know, a foot

and a half, maybe more on the ground right now. it's difficult to tell because of the wind gusts coming in. they do start shoveling to get it out of the way. it will be back out here in a few hours. it is dangerous especially for elderly people who have heart conditions. you will have a lot of issues with that. they tell you to take breaks, lift with your knees. if you can help your elderly neighbors out, you've been helping some of your neighbors, that's what the advice is as the snow continues to come out in wilmington delaware. i'm randy gyllenhaal, back to you guys. >> the goggles a great idea to help your own visibility, randy. to philadelphia where the police suv needed a push to get out of the snow banks. take a look. this impassable road too much for the police cruiser. nbc 10 live inful dell. >> he's been out there all day. george, it does not look like it's getting much better. >> our nbc 10 meteorologist told us, we are enduring this latest round of blowing and accumulating snow here along broad street. i want to show you these live

picture because broad street has really been our clearest street here in south philadelphia all afternoon. it is a city emergency route. for most of the day we've been seeing blacktop on it. as you can tell, cars are still getting by without an issue, but the snow has accumulated. as we pan back over along the sidewalks here, you can see some of the diligent residents and business owners around here trying to stay ahead of the shoveling. you can see the impact they are making but both of these areas right in front of our camera had already been shoveled earlier today. certainly seems like a losing battle in these conditions with the amount of snow we're still getting out here right now. one piece of good news, we're right above the broad street line, it is running without any problems. that's the latest in south philadelphia, i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. all right. here is a way to get arianna smart way in this kind of weather. a guy cross-country skiing right through downtown westchester

live at philadelphia market and 8th street. this east coast blizzard is deadly. 17 people total -- 17 lives claimed as a result of this storm, including one we mentioned at the top of the newscast in our area, driving home died. how dangerous it can be in a blizzard like this. >> and a different image of the snow. snow falling at high speeds here. time lapse video in gloucester county. when sunrises the street is coated by a thick blanket. nbc 10 south jersey bureau reporter live in camden county. >> i don't think we have to ask if conditions are improving. your picture right there tells it all. >> yeah, jim and jackie, this is some of the heaviest snow we've seen since about lunch time today and it's coming down at a pretty good pace. forgive us if we have to wipe off the lens with the snow coming towards us.

we saw mario clearing his car a few minutes ago. just in that amount of time it's already been covered up here again. these are some of the back streets in bellmawr, camden county. just to give you an idea what the residents are up against here, we found residents slowly digging out on dobbs and lee street, a few blocks off of 42. some say they may wait until mother nature finally rests before they get out shovels. otherwise they will have to do the heavy lifting twice. >> oh, yeah, at least a foot here. i think i heard around surrounding areas at least 16 inches. >> we haven't had a snowstorm like this in a while. >> what kind of challenges is it presenting for you guys. >> just digging out. we're going to chill at home and eat some soup and have a good time. >> ryan shoved aside some of what's piled up to get a head start.

mario starting on car number two. but guys, he may end up having to do this work all over again tomorrow morning. plow drivers tell me with wind and snow, as soon as they are able to clear roads, the wind is blowing it right back onto streets and highways. it's also blowing it onto the lip of where, you know, some businesses are so that cars can't even get in. that is the very latest, live in bellmawr, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> all right. want to show you dangerous situation in atlantic county, power lines hanging in the snow and the water in atlantic city. tens of thousands of customers are without power in new jersey. most of them along the shore. in ocean county barnegat police officer jumped into action to help push this suv right here out of some deep, deep water. that's very dangerous. this blizzard will be over us through the night. we'll have team coverage tracking the storm and how much snow we're going to get.

>> first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz, 32 in south allentown, 17 in philadelphia and we're not finished yet, glenn. >> that's right. you can see on the radar, it doesn't look like it's about to be over, does it? everything coming from the northeast. there's plenty of snow where that's coming from. it's not as heavy in allentown as it was. we are getting moderate snow coming into bucks and montgomery counties as you can see. also mercer county. some heavy snow from delaware county moved into delaware and going through wilmington on the way southward through pensville right now. and in new jersey as you saw from cindy long, gloucester city. we'll show you some totals up to 32 inches. king of prussia, new report of 23, salisbury 22.5, springtown 22.5. a lot of new reports coming in after 7:00. here is how it's going to end. it's going to end from northwest

to southeast showing temperatures, too. it's going to get cold overnight. everything is going to freeze up. anything that melted today. as you can see by 11:00, still snowing at the shore but pretty much over in the pennsylvania area as you can see there. and by morning, in the teens. so everything frozen. at least sunny when you get up in the morning and then dry all day with decreasing winds in the afternoon. now to the flood threat along the coastline. first alert meteorologist sheena parveen has more on that part of the story. >> glenn, this morning we saw record flooding along delaware beaches, jersey shore. as we go through this evening, the flood threat is not over. we have another high tide starting here very shortly. shore concerns, they still continue. the threat major flooding. even at low tide we have flooding. at high tide as we go into the next hour or two, we're going to see more flooding concerns as we go through these areas.

this is sussex county, the next high-tied time. keep in mind this is going to hit tonight and tomorrow morning, 7:13 tonight. cape may county 7:43 tonight, 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. obviously tonight's will be worse than tomorrow morning. we still expect way above flood stage. high tide for atlanta county 7:09 tonight and 7:26 tomorrow morning. again, big concerns along the shore. that flooding should already been moving in with those waters already starting to rise with those high tide times between 7:00 and 8:00 tonight. a closer look at what you can expect with the storm when you finally move out. that's coming up. >> sheena, thank you. our nbc 10 first alert coverage continues next with a live report from cape may where high tide is quickly approaching.

the republicans in harrisburg were fighting each other over the state budget. that's right. each other. the republican state senate passed a responsible budget that "begins" to fund education but the republican house of representatives has insisted on a budget that fails to fund education and balloons the deficit. call your legislator, tell them to pass a budget that's right for pennsylvania.

this season. this is blue mountain in the poconos where they have gotten over a foot of snow in this storm. there you see skiers and borders enjoying in the mountains. but a study in contrast. let's talk about the jersey shore where it's a really serious situation. floodwaters rising as high tide approaches once again. >> a lot of people anxious not knowing what to expect. live in cape may, how is it there aundrea? >> the wind has died down. wanted to give you a closer look at the bay tonight. you see that the water levels had begun to rise. that water is making its way onto the docks here as it did earlier this morning. we met fishermen who put extra ties on the boat. it won't come from the bay in terms of flooding. it could also come from the ocean. first responders are on stand by just waiting to see what happens. we are going to move from this location so we can get out of the way and bring you the latest

maybe everybody needs to see a warm moment like this. philadelphia's rittenhouse square on a wintry day our cameras were there when jason dropped to one knee and proposed to his long time girlfriend lizzie. jason had been planning to propose for weeks. he invited family members from scranton to watch and he wasn't about to let this snow get in the way. >> we've been dating for three and a half years and just decided it was time to take the next step. >> what did you say? >> i said yes. he surprised me with my whole family and his family and they came down from scranton in the blizzard. so hell of a family, huh? >> look at that. lizzie happy to show us her new
