11:31 am
spend their sunday shoveling on hicks street in south philadelphia. the strategy is to tackle it sooner rather than later. a live look from sky force10 shows the snow blanketing the entire region. you can't see a rooftop or tree top without snow blanketing. a little bit earlier, skyforce10 was over cars just socked in by the snow in south philly. it will take some time before everybody digs out. you can see the person standing on the snowdrift. didn't try to drive, but instead waited for a ride. the streets department report all 400 of them vehicles are out on the road. they continue to clear the roads so people can drive around. the mayor of philadelphia is reminding everybody to take it easy on the sidewalks, to take it easy on the sidewalks.

the septa airport just reopened. all other regional airlines remain suspended today. flights will gradually resume at philadelphia international airport as we get on later into the afternoon hours. we have live team coverage of the aftermath of the blizzard of 2016 from the philadelphia to the shore to the lehigh valley, even in the sky. let's begin this morning with nbc10's matt da lucia aboard skyforce10 showing us the conditions out here. >> this is quite a view we have here. we're looking at some streets in northeast philadelphia where a lot of people are waking up to all that snow out their window. they're heading out there with their shovels, with the snow blowers and really they have their work cut out for them. we've seen a lot of side streets. you see a lot stilt have snow covering them. a lot of the major roads, especially the highways are clear. they've been salted, they've been plowed. we're starting to see more traffic move through them.
11:33 am
these side streets are still a little dicey at this point. a lot of cars are buried under several inches of snow. you see some of these cars right here. they are buried under snow. and not just that, but when a plow comes through, it kind of pushes all that snow off to the side. you see someone dig out there. this is what we've been seeing throughout the area and hearing from the mayor of philadelphia and the streets department, as rosemary mentioned, the crews are still out there. the plows are trying to get to everywhere as soon as possible. the bus service, we hear, is going to be restored on a route by route basis. new jersey transit is going to be resuming its schedule. that just took place within the last half hour. service is being restored there
11:34 am
and throughout the area as people begin to dig out. we'll head over to new jersey, to south jersey, to see how those roads are doing at this hour. but for now, i'm live in skyforce10, matt da lucia, "nbc10 news." >> thanks, matt. the weight of this snow caused this roof to partially collapse. skyforce10 was over this scene a little earlier this morning in overbrook. nobody here was hurt, but as can you see, crews had to get into the house and all the snow on the front steps made it difficult. as we continue our live team coverage, nbc10's drew smith was reporting yesterday in north wildwood at the height of the blizzard. the wind gusts were at full force. drew is live this morning in wildwood again. a little steadier out there with the winds certainly dying down. drew, earlier this morning we had the last of the high tide roll in. tell us what you're seeing in the aftermath and the wake of it. >> reporter: not having to hold onto the hat this morning, which
11:35 am
is good news, but take a look at the bad news. this used to be a beach. this is no longer a beach. the atlantic ocean has come up and taken out the entire dune here. this was all covered up after superstorm sandy and now it's once again exposed. i was just speaking with a city council member. he said this is concerning. if the sea wall wasn't here, he says this -- we just shot some video down in wildwood where it's still flooding, but it's beginning to recede. power crews are trying to restore power as the wind knocked out power. still about 4,000 people without power in wildwood. further up in avalon and stone harbor. they're now looking at the damage and they say it's quite remarkable what this blizzard and this storm did.
11:36 am
>> now there's no beach at all. in the fall they did some restoration and it was looking pretty good, but now there's no beach at all. >> because the on or about sn just a very formidable force and i just think god we do have the sea wall. >> reporter: a lot of folks hoping by summer they'll replenish this area of north wildwood so people can enjoy the beach again. the city council member we were just speaking to said there's another tide coming up, 8:00 tonight, but they're not expecting anything near what we experienced yesterday. looks like the access roads will open back up shortly. near north wildwood, "nbc10 news." governor chris christie just updated us on the clean-up in the garden of state. he says the they have only reported small beach.
11:37 am
he says drivers can head back out on the road, but he had this word of caution. >> today i think the most important thing is for everybody to remember, if you go out on the roads, please respect the speed limits. very important. because there are still going to be places the roads are slick. it's cold. we are continuing to salt in those areas, but there still may be slick spots. be careful. take your time as you drive around today. you're free to go out and do what you want to do. go to church -- >> according to governor christie, there were fewer than 300 accidents across the entire state today. he says that was a testament to people staying off the roads. let's talk about power outages right now. we have an update. atlantic city electric has the most outages. delmarva, delaware and pse & g
11:38 am
and peco are reporting minimal outages. all right. where to put all that snow in sn that's the big question. especially in places like center city, philadelphia. this is clean-up day across the region. folks will be out with nir shovels, their snow blowers, digging out from all that snow that the blizzard dumped on us. here's a live look over market street in center city. mitch block has an update. >> reporter: mayor kenny wrapped up a news conference and says the snow emergency remains in effect so the cars stay off the streets as they clean up the snow. the main concern in northern liberties on spring garden is refreezing. the snow will melt and refreeze. so far the city has removed 158 cars from the streets. there have been very few outages and no tree emergencies, according to the mayor and office of emergency management.
11:39 am
mayor kenney had high praise for all the city workers out there clearing up the snow. >> on very few instances people try to venture out, we had issues relative to cars. by and large, our citizens helped very much in making our ability to attack the storm in the way in which we did. the fourth largest storm in the city's history. >> reporter: one thing the mayor asked is you don't put the snow back on the streets as you're shoveling those walkways. that you keep it clear. the city will be open for business tomorrow. those city gar rajs where people were able to park for $5, those will remain open and available for cars to stay off the roads until tuesday. for now, we're reporting in northern liberties, i'm mitch blacher, "nbc10 news." as you can see, plenty of blacktop. that's a good sight. that's what we like to see. however, you definitely want to take it easy because it can be slick. lauren is live from allentown. i understand you took

11:41 am

11:42 am
even we are being very, very careful as we're driving through here. i can tell you, we did hit some areas where we thought, no, we can't go through there and we didn't want to take any chances. it really shows you the work that is left to do here. not just in this neighborhood but throughout the city of allentown and the lehigh valley. for now live in allentown, "nbc10 news." >> you get a look at how narrow the roads are because of the snow piled up. thank you. we have information from septa about mass transit. we'll have that update ahead. also meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking the forecast for us as we're watching some freezing concerns. >> yeah. it's cold right now and then we'll warm up to the freezing mark. may see some melting and then refreeze tonight. that could cause problems getting back to school and work. one place we'd love the snow is at the pocono mountains. lots of skiers there enjoying the snow that fell yesterday. we're looking although a finally dry radar.
