digging out after the blizzard of 2016 buried our region with historic amounts of snow. from above, sky force 10 captures the mess that was left behind. tonight nbc 10 has you covered with the information you need to know on the aftermath of this storm, whether you live in philadelphia and the area suburbs, south jersey, the shores or delaware. thank you for joining us. this storm's impact will continue into the workweek.

we've already learned that all philadelphia public schools are closed tomorrow as are many other districts. you can see school closings controlling at the bottom of your screen. and tonight we have team coverage of the blizzard of 2016 with reporters in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. we begin with nbc 10's denise nakano. it doesn't look like everything will be back to normal tomorrow in the city. >> reporter: no, not any time soon. the snow emergency has been expanded until further notice so the plows can get through. they have been able to tackle some of the main roads but here at 10th and cantrell the secondary roads still remain a mess. on the left side, if you can even tell, those are cars buried in the snow. shovels hit the blacktop in philadelphia neighborhoods as people used the last of the day's sunlight to work in their favor. >> you've got to dig them out and then park and then particular it out again and dig it out again.

>> reporter: people spent the day shoveling out of the fourth largest snowfall in history. whoever owns this car will have a hard time finding it. cars are trapped by snow banks some three feet tall. side streets are snow covered and impassable. >> i don't think anyone can get down here. a backhoe couldn't get down here either. >> reporter: mass transit resumed a regular schedule, although regional travel is still suspended. city plow trucks were on the move continuing a nonstop plowing and salting operation. >> the city is doing the best they can, but what are you going to do? >> hundreds of people worked around the clock and will continue to do so. please continue to help. >> reporter: here at 10th and cantrell in south philadelphia there is still plenty of work to be done. emergency operations will stay in effect until crews can clear roadways like this one. all schools in the philadelphia school district, public and parochial, will be closed tomorrow. reporting live, i'm denise

nakano, nbc 10 news. here's a live look at the vine street expressway, a much different scene than yesterday. drivers able to easily make their way around. digout day in roxborough. one woman we spoke to figured it would take hours to get her car pulled out. transportation agencies have been working to get planes, trains and buses back in service following the blizzard. skyforce 10 over philadelphia international airport as crews worked to cleear the runways. service is resuming but passengers should check with their airlines about information on specific flights. we can tell you septa's airport line is back open. both the market, frankford and broad street lines are running. as for bus service, it's operating on a route by route basis. amtrak just announced acela express, northeast regional and other services will operate on a

modified schedule again tomorrow. new jersey transit's trains, buses and light rail are back in service. regular weekday service is expected to resume for the morning commute, but riders are urged to allow extra travel time. and even if roads look clear, you still need to be cautious. police responded to this two-car crash in the southbound lanes of the northeast extension in landsdale. no one was hurt. after they cleared the scene, crews re-treated that road. we found another crash on the same road, this one in the northbound lanes. no one was hurt, traffic was backed up in some areas. only one lane was plowed, which added to the delays. now let's get an update on the forecast with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. refreezing is a problem tonight so we could see more slipping a and sliding on the roads. >> anything that melted today

will freeze really solid tonight because the temperature is going down. it's already at the freezing mark. it barely got above freezing at 34 degrees so there really wasn't a whole lot of melting going on. it's 23 in pottstown now, reading, millville. as we go through the night with the wind diminishing and mostly clear skies, that's even philadelphia down into the teens. as we go through the night you'll see a lack of clouds, the lack of wind, fresh snow cover, it's all the perfect condition for these temperatures to go down. i think some of them will be going down into the single digits, like you see right there in lancaster by morning. we'll see how much it's going to warm up this week and there are a couple of chances of at least some snow. i'm have that with the seven-day in just a few minutes. residents in lehigh county are digging out after snowfall like never before.

this was the scene in allentown atoday. a record 31.9 inches of snow fell. they're smashing the previous high of a little more than 25.5 inches from the blizzard of 1996. the biggest question now, where do you put it? >> like in the yard or in the grass. other than that, there's really nowhere to go with it basically. we could ship it out somewhere, but other than that, there's nowhere to go with it. >> now, to put it in perspective just how much snow they got, the 31 plus inches of snow is equivalent to allentown's snowfall average for the entire winter season. this note was posted at the wawa on lehigh street in allentown apologizing to customers after they ran out of gas. the big issue was their inability to get a tanker truck there safely. in delaware, many side roads are still coated with snow. take a look at the scene in

north wilmington. route 202 looks nice and clear. randy will have an update on conditions in delaware in just a few minutes. now to the flooding aftermath at the jersey shore. this picture was snapped in north wildwood. police rescuing a girl from a home on 17th and delaware. you can see the officer in waist-deep water as he holds that girl. andrea has been covering the flooding at the shore all weekend and joins us live in cape may county. with the downed trees, power outages and major flooding, i know this is just the beginning of a long cleanup ahead. >> reporter: a very long process ahead, jackie. hurricane sandy has been the ultimate measurement of how bad a storm could get. local leaders say this is worse. while the floodwaters have begun to recede, the damage has already been done. mayor christopher fox and his administrator, christopher

riding took us around in a humvee to get a closer look. at its height, the mayor said the water was about five feet high. you can see the water lines on many of the homes. between 60 to 70 people had to be evacuated. more than 100 homes sustained damage, from water, wind or both. docks broke free and boats came undone, drifting away from their original location and sometimes crashing into neighbors' property. today the cleanup has begun as floodwaters continue to recede. starting tomorrow, residents can start the process of getting help. >> we're starting to get people's names, addresses. obviously i've been in contact with the governor's office and they assured me that aid should be coming. >> reporter: i'm told that a lot of residents here raised their homes after hurricane sandy, so the good news here is that while there has been damage, it may not be as bad as it could have been.

new jersey governor chris christie is already back on the campaign trail. he touted his handling of the massive storm that hit over the weekend. the blizzard of 2016 was the 17th snow emergency in the last six years under his watch. power has finally been restored to thousands in our region. atlantic city electric has the most still without power with just under 1,000 customers. of those still in the dark, most of them are located in cape may county. delmarva, pse & g, peco and ppl are all reporting minimal outages. if you lost power or know one who did, nbc 10 or our parent company comcast can help you power up. check our website for a list of locations. dealing with the aftermath. it's not just the shore that's dealing with heavy damage from this blizzard. a look at the devastation in

despite its light and fluffy appearance, the snow proved just too much to handle for the roof on this building in bucks county. officials say the roof buckled at this business on north heller avenue in quakertown around 7:00 this morning. thankfully no one was injured. and coming up here in delaware, the big question, where are we going to put all of

take a look at this video sent to us from nbc 10 viewer ryan clark. the flooding was so bad in ocean city, cape may county, he strapped a camera to himself and decided to go guy kakikayaking the streets. we found these guys in montgomery county digging out a car that got stuck on a side street. this morning many of you woke up and saw this, cars just buried in snow. nbc 10 in glenside where it looks like they definitely had their work cut out for them. a live look at wilmington, newcastle county from our camera on top of frahly stadium. this after the governor lifted a driving ban earlier today.

randy is live for us in wilmington. we saw you out there yesterday in extreme conditions. how are roads tonight? >> reporter: roads are clear generally, the main ones. plow truck drivers are trying to get creative trying to figure out where to put all the snow. it's the neighborhood streets that are bad but right now route 202 remain open as people venture outside for the very first time. stuck indoors for the past two days, hundreds hit this sledding hill in newark. the line to get in was 50 cars deep. but the bloom brothers had no time for that luxury. >> make a little extra money. >> reporter: they're scooping up $80 a driveway helping neighbors shovel out of the tundra. >> it was just a big ole winter wonderland out here. >> reporter: out here it's the side streets and narrow passageways that remain impassable. a lot of residents have questions about both school and work tomorrow. >> i think we should wait another day because it's still a

safety hazard. >> reporter: city offices will be closed, some local school districts have already cancelled classes. >> because there's a lot of snow. >> reporter: that makes for some happy kids, while their parents struggle to even make a run to the store. >> getting out of the neighborhood, the city streets aren't plowed as all. on my way back i had to turn around a couple of times because there was cars stuck on the road. >> reporter: further south, delaware beach towns are still recovering. the governor taking a helicopter tour of flood damage. >> about 50 evacuations due to high water so our national guard is utilizing our vehicles to have the ability to ford high water. >> reporter: and just a quick note, we're already seeing slippery conditions in the parking lot and on sidewalks so that refreeze well under way in delaware. >> the digout continues in upper darby, delaware county.

this little guy did his best to help out. and in burlington county, drivers trying to clear a path for cars. the side streets in this neighborhood still unplowed tonight. the kids taking advantage of all the snow in westchester, chester county, making the best of it. mounds of snow in lafayette hill, montgomery county. snow blowers out in force clearing sidewalks and driveways. breathing a sigh of relief, glenn, that the blizzard is over but still so much work ahead and it is cold outside. >> and there is a ton of snow. we got an entire winter's worth of snow in one storm. almost exactly the average amount of snow in philadelphia and in allentown which set an all-time record. coldest night of the week tonight. everything will be really cold. we've got to refreeze. anything that melted is frozen already most likely. so anything that looks wet is going to be icy in the morning. and we have a couple of snow chances this week. we're not talking about anything

gigantic, but after all we've gone through, a lot of people are not looking forward to that word for a while. 30 grows, the winds 8 miles an hour, feels like it's 22. and it is going down tonight. and it's one of those things where even in the city it gets cold when you have all of that white around instead of the concrete. and there are the temperatures going down through the teens and the windchills the way it feels going into the single digits. it just takes a little bit of wind to create a windchill when the temperature is this low. we got up to 34 and it's in the 20s across the rest of the area. how much snow fell? 22.4 officially in philadelphia. fourth biggest snowstorm all time. 18 plus in manayunk, nearly 18 in northeast philly. there's the 31.9 in allentown, 27 in easton, berks county up to

24. in delaware, 16, 17 inches, even son delaware getting 10 inches. in bucks, montgomery and mercer counties, king of prussia 26, 20 inches in camden and a little bit less as we head toward millville but that's a big storm for them. 11.5 inches. and in delaware county, big one, 28 inches in malvern, 17 inches in oxford, lots of places got tremendous amounts of snow. we're drying out, we've got some clouds back to the west. we don't have any big storms around but a possible wintry mix coming in tuesday night. it would start off as light rain showers, perhaps a light snow late tuesday night and into wednesday morning. but the temperature tuesday afternoon will go into the 40s. clear and very cold tonight.

we've got the refreezing. 15 for philadelphia, 9 north and west around allentown. tomorrow mostly sunny, a very cold day. high temperatures only in the mid-30s. similar to today. then we get up to 44 tuesday with that late shower possibly changing to the light mix. a little more significant threat coming later on thursday and thursday night, watching the coast for a potential storm. it could stay offshore. more on that tomorrow. and not too bad over the weekend. we've rounded up nbc 10 viewers blizzard photos and videos from shirtless shoveling to dogs in the snow. we'll show you the pictures you can't miss. the republicans in harrisburg were fighting each other over the state budget. that's right. each other.

the republican state senate passed a responsible budget that "begins" to fund education but the republican house of representatives has insisted on a budget that fails to fund education and balloons the deficit. call your legislator, tell them to pass a budget that's right for pennsylvania.

snow piles are getting higher all across our region. crews were hard at work enclosuring snow from this parking lot in bucks county. and there is a lot of clearing to do when you get an entire winter's worth of snow in one day. >> yeah, and you don't want it to melt all at the same time like a giant rainstorm or huge warmup this week, it will be melting gradually each day but then you've got to watch out for the refreezing at night so anything that looks wet is going to be ice by morning. >> yeah, those areas that haven't drained. tonight they'll freeze over. >> sidewalks especially. >> we'll see you back here tonight at 11:00. have a good night.
