a day of sledding instead of school for some. a day of building frustration for others. >> i can't get to my house. >> as the entire area continues to clean up from the one-two punch of snow and flooding. >> we're one storm away from a major disaster. >> residents want relief. >> they did absolutely nothing. we got word that the schools in the philadelphia public school system will be closed tomorrow. that's public and parochial. good evening. i'm denise nakano. >> i'm jacqueline london. the snow is making it hard to get around. people could have to deal with ice. >> the weather team is tracking that threat. but first our fleet of news vehicles is traveling around the region to show us how people are digging out from the blizzard of

2016. we begin with nbc 10's mitch blacher live in news force 10. >> reporter: guys, we spent most of our day in allentown as we have driven around the lehigh valley. i want to show you what we're seeing, it's pretty common. taillights, traffic stopped for the most part because some of the roads are in rough shape. the main roads, they are passable but you notice throughout the lehigh valley, allentown especially, that the roads what were two-lane roads are one lane. there is not enough space to put the snow anywhere else. we're dealing in allentown specifically with 400 miles of roads, more than 100 of them are narrow alleyways, simply too small to get to. there have been 45 plows just for the city alone going all day all night since this storm passed. the city has asked for help from the state with equipment. that's the latest from allentown. mitch blacher, "nbc 10 news."

>> reporter: hi, i'm harry hairston in form force. we're heading to chester county. taking a look at the roads there, we noticed major roads in norristown are impassable in the neighborhoods and barely cleared over in norrenton. coming down germantown pike, some of the roads were partly cleared. the sidewalks, they are impassable. forcing residents to walk in the streets. we're going to report more as we get to chester county and show you what the roads are there. we understand that many of the neighborhoods there are just still snowed in. we'll bring uf a live report soon. >> sky force 10 is also giving us a view from above. it's live over south philadelphia. take a look at just those cars that are still crowded in between all of that snow. a lot of work to be done before they can make it out. we'll show you more from across the region over the next hour.

take a look where sky force 10 was earlier today. >> this is over broad street in washington avenue in south philadelphia. that massive snow pile is one of the places the city is dumping all of that snow. >> and when this much snow falls getting back to your normal routine doesn't happen overnight. >> a lot of families are anxious to get out and back to work or school and nbc 10's rosemary connors is live in queen village. what kind of progress has the city made today? >> reporter: well, here on catherine street you can see it's passable, it's really a lot of slush out here on the road. but it's not because the plow truck has come through, it's because cars have been driving down the street pushing down that snow to the blacktop. we know that philadelphia streets department is working overtime. they are in full force, they have all of their krees out on the road plus subcontractors. the primaries look great. it's the side streets like this block you can see the cars are socked in. for some folks in similar

predicaments today meant grabbing the shovel and getting to work. taking matters into their own hands these neighbors in point breeze decided to use elbow grease to take care of the snow. likely bypass their block because of a stalled car stuck over the weekend. >> friday night the snow was coming down and i happened to come down the street because it looked like i could make it down but i didn't. i got stuck halfway. so this morning acame around and started shoveling. these nice people they came out. >> it's a block and a community thing. >> some took the day off from work. >> now i need a plow to come. that would be good for us. >> clean it up. >> yeah. there is no where to put it. there is so much of it. >> reporter: philadelphia's streets department deployed dump trucks to haul away mountains of snow to five undisclosed locations. some are empty parking lots in the city. but is it enough to get the roads ready for school tomorrow? >> i feel like yesterday and

today most of the sidewalks have been clear and salted at least. so they are passable. >> reporter: families in south philly spent the snow day with children, hopeful their kids will get back in the classroom on tuesday. >> i don't know. it will be interesting to see. the roads don't look terrible. we're close enough to school we can walk if we need to. >> reporter: neighbors also want their lives to get back to normal. >> i'll be able to get to work tomorrow. will our spots be here when we come back. we spent the last 3 1/2 hours and probably be out here for a couple more. >> reporter: you can't put cones or anything blocking your spots on the street as you can see here on catherine street between eighth and ninth, the shoveling continues even at 5:00 and as we mentioned at the top of the hour the late-breaking details philly public schools are closed so parents and students get another snow day. reporting live on catherine street, rosemary connors, "nbc 10 news." >> philadelphia mayor jim kenney called on the city to be patient as he shared important updates.

normal trash and recycling will resume tomorrow. the philadelphia parking authority will not be enforcing meter and kiosk parking violations today or tomorrow. and they continue offering reduced rates at special parking garages and lots until 7:00 tomorrow morning. right now the streets department is at full deployment plowing the city streets. >> obviously we need to get our primary streets and secondary streets as clear as possible before we get to the smaller streets. >> we learned a few minutes ago that philadelphia public schools will be closed tomorrow, right now that does not necessarily mean parochial schools, we are waiting to find out if parochial schools will be closed tomorrow as well. >> to find out if your child's school is closed or on delay we have you covered. the minute it happens. with the nbc 10 app go and check it out. sign up for alerts and we'll send you a text or e-mail. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen

joins us. >> i know it's the up and down cycle of the melting during the day, then the refreezing at night. so is this a concern for people as they head off to work tomorrow. >> yeah. i think so. especially before 8:00 a.m. we're going to see refreezing. allentown is down to 32 degrees, but the cycle of the melting and the freezing is going to continue really for the rest of the week. temperatures right now in philadelphia, still at 39 degrees. even northeast philly, so we're still seeing some melting in these areas especially with today's sunshine. a lot of melting, 35 in pottstown and millville, 36 in dover, 37 atlantic city and wildwood so we're going to watch these numbers drop as we go overnight. freezing will occur overnight into early tomorrow morning. by 7:00 p.m. we should be around the mid-30s in philadelphia, already seeing that ice developing areas north and west through the lehigh valley. by 11:00 p.m. around freezing through the philadelphia area, ice forming at that time. and by tomorrow morning, again, if you leave before 8:00 a.m. to hit the roadways, just be

careful out there, be cautious, keep in mind that temperatures before 8:00 a.m. will be at freezing or colder depending on where you are so the icy spots will be a concern each at that time. now, more melting is going to occur tomorrow during the day. also we have rain showers in the forecast. small weather system around chicago, that will add moisture with this but don't be surprised if you see some rain and temperatures in about the 40s once again through most of the area. so coming up we'll take a look at the rest of the seven-day forecast with the melting and freezing situation, and also tracking another system offshore. sky force 10 over breaking news at this hour. emergency crews and police responding to a person on i-76 eastbound in grays ferry. there is a person who is on the road there injured and right now they are checking on his condition, trying to help him out. we're not sure how he got on the road there. but they are assisting a person who appears injured on 76

eastbound in grays ferry. you can see this is causing problems on the road. look at this backup. sky force 10 is over that eastbound lane. 76. it is stretching now looks like for miles. the westbound lane looks fine. the eastbound lane is backed up because they have that lane completely blocked. 76 eastbound in grays ferry causing look likes at least a couple mile backup. we'll keep you posted as we learn more information about this incident. another look from earlier, this showing us the damage in wildwood, cape may couldn't, a landmark moisture, high winds peeled back some of the roof here, many are still cleaning up from record flooding from blizzard of 2016. >> nbc 10's ted greenberg has gotten a closer look at that damage as he travels up and down the jersey shore. ted? >> reporter: i went from long beach island to stone harbor in

cape may county, north wildwood as well. this was a beach access path. but it is now closed to the public and for very good reason. you can see why. it literally ends in midair, take a look at that damage. eaten away by the ocean. and closer to the bay in several communities, homes are still filled with a major mess. ernesto's place in west wildwood is still soaked after record flooding saturday swamped the house. >> we lost a lot. even like priceless stuff like our wedding stuff. all this stuff that was hand made is all lost. >> reporter: he's among many starting the process of cleaning up and salvaging whatever they can. >> everything that we gathered up was not high enough for this storm that came. it was twice as high than sandy. >> reporter: beaches took a beating especially those in the wholegate section of long beach

township, houses are dangerously close to the ocean and north wildwood where the raging surf caused a major dune breach, emergency repairs are now under way in both communities. >> we have to calculate. >> reporter: this afternoon new jersey's lieutenant governor and the commissioner got a first-hand look at the damaged coastline including the beach in stone harbor. >> we had engineers up and down the coast line. part of us being out is working with coastal engineers to look at the damage, assessment of the entire coastline. >> reporter: martin says the state will work with federal officials to see if the damage from this storm can be included in a previously planned beach replenishment plan on this island, a project set to go out to bid in march. live in stone harbor, ted greenberg, "nbc 10 news." >> our coverage of the blizzard of 2016 continues next with this. apology to neighbors, why leaders in one town said their response to the blizzard of 2016

sky force 10 over breaking news on i-76, in grays ferry. first responders are there tending to a man laying in the eastbound lanes of 76, it's not clear how he got there or how serious sis injuries are. both lanes of 76 all lanes on 76, eastbound and westbound, are currently closed as first responders, police and emergency crews respond to a man in the street. as you can see, sky force 10 over the scene. how long that backup is on the eastbound lane and we presume on the westbound lane as well since they closed it probably in the last five minutes. again, folks responding to a man laying in the street, not sure how he got there and how serious

his injuries are. we'll keep you posted on this breaking news as the situation develops. 7á digging out is proving te a challenge across much of the area. this was the view from sky force 10 earlier today above chain street in norristown. the conditions in norristown have been so bad a councilman is the apologizing to neighbors. some tell us they are still snowed in behind huge snow piles. they see plows down the street without actually plowing. know more than a day since the last snow fell the council man took to facebook, apologized for what he called an unacceptable snow response failure and talked with nbc 10 today. >> we've also lost several veterans from our public works department and don't have a public works director all of which are issues that should have been addressed. it was a way to say to people we

messed up, i'm sorry, we're going to do better. >> taxes we pay, no. they knew it was coming. hey. where you at. do something. >> the councilman tells nbc 10 they have been short handed in the public works department. right now norristown has no public works director. >> across the country 38 people died as a result of this weekend's blizzard, some people were in car accidents, others had heart attacks shoveling snow. in berks county a 56-year-old man was in his car when a plow came by and buried the car in snow. the snow blocked his exhaust pipe and the man died of carbon monoxide poisoning. in north jersey a young mother and son are dead, they were in their car. the motor was running and the tail pipe covered by snow. the mother was just 23 years old. her 3-year-old daughter survived. she is in very critical condition though. police in montgomery county

are investigating the death of a pregnant teenager. a family member told nbc 10 that 18-year-old breanna died over the weekend after shoveling snow outside her home. her family says she was 8 months pregnant and had a heart condition. authorities have not linked the death to shoveling. a 54-year-old man died saturday after shoveling snow. an 88-year-old man died as he shoveled snow in montgomery county. and in delaware, a 44-year-old u.s. capital police officer sho. doctors in the area are warning that shoveling the heavy wet snow we're dealing with can be dangerous even for people who think their heart is healthy. a temple cardiologist tells us because many people at risk for a shoveling-related heart attack only have a minor blockage and no symptoms. he believes those kinds of

blockages are in all of us to some degree. >> and it is the sudden rise in blood pressure and heart rate associated with shoveling and lifting snow that can crack open that cholesterol blockage and result in a sudden blood clot. >> the only safe way to shovel according to a doctor we talked to is to have someone else do it. but someone who is in very good physical condition. well, today we have seen temperatures well above freezing. i'm sure you noticed, not as cold through the afternoon today so we are going to keep seeing that melting take place until the overnight hours. here is a live look. this is i think the most amount of skiers and snowboarders we've seen all season long over the weekend i'm sure too yesterday and today the camera here much more crowded than it normally is so the poconos benefiting from the snow. but the melting has taken place more today i think than it did

yesterday with the sunshine and temperatures around 40 degrees. that's only going to cause problems tonight because we'll drop below freezing. ice is going to be forming and as early as sunset today which we're seeing at this moment, a north and west we'll see the freezing starting first, and through the rest of the area overnight. tomorrow, though, we're looking at another day with temperatures in the 40s but also rain showers in the forecast. not a lot but we'll be seeing some. we're at 29 in the poconos, 32 in allentown, so that is one area dropping below freezing. mostly the mid-30s north and west. philadelphia and bensalem close to 40 degrees, 37 glassboro, 35 millville, 36 degrees in dover, 37 in atlantic city. and there you see the snow cover across philadelphia. temperaturewise, we're going to keep dropping down. so, right around sunset is when we'll see a lot of the freezing starting to take place, the temperatures dropping. overnight we stay in the mid to upper 20s through most of the area, so this even goes into

early tomorrow morning. so if you leave your house before 8:00 a.m., i think you're going to have a better chance of seeing icy spots on the roads and the sidewalks, anywhere we've seen slush and melting today. look at the current snowcover across the area. it's pretty much everywhere except the immediate shore and the delaware beaches. espeshlgly the farther inland you go we have higher areas of snowcover which will continue to melt tomorrow afternoon too. we're my now, we'll stay that way overnight and tomorrow we'll see this system which doesn't have a lot of moisture with it, it's going to try to throw us rain showers as we go through the afternoon. here's future weather, temperatures, they keep on going down. mid to upper 20s by tomorrow morning. and again if you leave early we're looking at most of the area being below freezing if you are mostly north and west of philadelphia. through tomorrow afternoon, 3:00 p.m., we could see a line of rain showers moving through. and then as we go into wednesday -- tuesday night and early wednesday we'll be looking to our south. another weather system could be

bringing snow showers to parts of delaware and extreme south jersey, other than that wednesday afternoon we are back near 40 degrees again. so, more melting in the forecast and then freezing at night. so front ice forming, partly cloudy, 29 for the low in philadelphia, 23 degrees areas north and west. tomorrow not as cold, 41 to 44, a chance of rain showers around, but the melting will continue to take place. wednesday we'll be watching to the south for snow showers around, thursday and friday we're watching a weather system offshore. at this point it does look to be staying offshore. we're going to keep checking the model on that system too. either way temperatures around 40 degrees. as we go into the weekend look at the warm-up. 47 by sunday. >> sheenla, thank you. we have updated information for school closings tomorrow. all public schools in new castle county are closed and we told you earlier that public schools will close in philadelphia. we know that catholic schools in the city have announced they are closing as well.

continuing to follow our breaking news on i-76, a person is on the interstate, on the road there. we know this happened eastbound, one eastbound lane is open, westbound is closed. you can see an ambulance is on the scene. numerous medics are there trying to treat this person. we don't know why the person was on the road. there wasn't a vehicle that seemed to be that close to that individual. so we don't know if that person was walking, was possibly hit or trying to get assistance for that individual's car that may

have been stranded. take a look at the backup that incident is causing. i-76 in grays ferry because of a person down on the road and being treated right now. causing a huge backup. miles and miles down. so, avoid that area if you can or you know anyone headed in that direction, because it looks like this may take a while to clear up. we'll keep you updated on the person's condition when we receive it. now back to our coverage of the blizzard of 2016. nbc 10 on the roads and in the air to give you a closer look at the impact of this storm. news force 10 in allentown, the lehigh valley saw some of the highest snow totals from the storm. chances are you are having trouble getting around. a live look from storm force 10 driving into westchester, here it is smooth sailing, moving along very well. no apparent problems. >> let's go to tim furlong live in wilmington. it's the side streets causing problems tonight. >> reporter: really. i think a lot of the bigger

streets are passable. that's north dupont near trolley square. cars are getting by. it's tight. all of the parking spots nonexistent. the issue are the side streets. look at this, west 14th street and a disaster. we found many streets that look just like this. in northern delaware the main roads are clear, many side streets you find snow covered spots and the snow piles on the corners making it tricky each for ambulances to get by. in the city of wilmington the sledding crowd is the proof all of the schools are off. city and county offices are closed as well. the plowing efforts and the sidewalk shoveling we found on market street, it is all very much under way. >> do what we got to do. >> steve is patient with the plowing effort but he is getting more frustrated as the day goes on. >> i had to park three blocks away for one stop today. >> reporter: a weird day, the

shop sits on a block, the street on one side is clear, the other side is brutal. the walking crowd nonexistent. many customers would rather have massive delivery. the tips are better because customers know he has to work extra hard when the streets look like this. >> you have to park in the middle of the street sometimes. do what you got to do. >> reporter: that's what you got to do. new castle schools are closed tomorrow including wilmington. contractors and plow operators are going to work through the night. and customers and employees get to them. they have a lot on the side streets including this one. we have to get our news truck out. i'm looking at this thing going i don't know if it's going to happen. folks, wish us luck. tim furlong, "nbc 10 news." we need you home, tim. sky force 10 giving us a bird's-eye view of the aftermath. this is the concord mall parking lot in new castle county. crews are making progress here.

more parking spaces are appearing. and with all of that snow piling up you need to be extra careful on the roads. >> cydney long has more from gloucester township. >> reporter: compared to saturday's blizzard, today feels like spring. the sun is out and we can finally see the black top. but when you have giant piles of snow like this, this volume of snow isn't going anywhere fast. in fact, whether or not they are in parking lots in your neighborhood, your child's bus stop, they will attract children. when the pile is four feet high or 10 feet high, even an adult becomes hidden. police and local parents share a similar concern. >> drive safely, be careful in neighborhoods especially, especially on the routes to and from the school buildings. be careful as a driver. children are going to be children. >> where the piles are, they could be a block from the intersection. you got to make sure you drive slowly, especially with icing

conditions. if someone comes out in front of your vehicle you might not stop in time. >> reporter: police are warning all drivers that hit the road this week, be extra cautious. from gloucester township, cydney long, "nbc 10 news." the lehigh valley saw more than two feet of snow. you need four-wheel drive to get around many parts of allen town. at 14th and shoe we found snow and ice in the middle of the intersection. you can see vehicle after vehicle needing neighborly help to get through. allentown's mayor is asking everyone to have patience as crews continue to clear more than 400 miles of road. it's been a frustrating day for septa riders. nbc 10 at jefferson station in center city, people who depend on septa, some waiting for trains to arrive. septa says unfortunately delays can be expected as it recovers from the blizzard. it's asking commuters to be patient. >> and this is the place to be

on a snow day. out sledding or tubing. sky force 10 over woodbury gloucester county, these kids seem to have found the perfect hill. to ice skating finding ways to enjoy the day off from work or school. here is a live look from the blue cross river rink at penns landing. a check with sheena parveen. >> icy conditions a concern tomorrow and i know tonight. >> yes, definitely tonight when it's going to start. overnight tonight and into early tomorrow we had a lot of melting today with the sun and temperatures and some areas around 40 degrees. the melting is going to freeze over tonight, so icy conditions beware. especially if you leave before 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning to hit the roads. right now we're at 39 in philadelphia and northeast philly, so melting is still occurring. the sun has set. 36 washington township. 35 in chester springs at the moment and some areas north and west are at freezing. 32 degrees quakertown and

allentown. the poconos at 29, 37 in reading, 32 in coatesville. much of south jersey in delaware in about the mid to upper 30s, newark, though, at 32 degrees. so again, the ice already starting to form in some areas from the slush around today and also any puddles from other melting snow. here is a live look down eighth and market right now. so, the roads look clear but if you've been driving on any roads you know there is a lot of slush, there is a lot of water on the roadways. that is all going to be freezing over tonight especially if the roads are untreated and a lot of that stlush is kind of thick so that will be freezing into ice. right now we're looking toward chicago at rain showers here. that's going to move our way tomorrow. we do have a chance of showers around but keep in mind tomorrow temperatures are going to be reaching around 40 degrees by the afternoon. some areas mid-40s so we'll see more melting with the rain chance. tonight by 9:00 p.m. around 33 degrees philadelphia area, ice forming at this time and through

the pennsylvania turnpike commission is apologizing to these motorists who were stranded during the weekend's massive snowstorm. more than 500 vehicles were stuck on the turnpike in western p.a. during the blizzard. the those stranded stayed in shelters and hotels. the situation was caused by a pair of tractor-trailers that could not make it up a hill friday night. governor wolf said there is plenty of work to be done on roads throughout the state. >> try to get back to open roads as quickly as possible, local municipalities trying to do that and penndot is certainly trying to do that. and they are making great progress. they have done a lot of good work. >> governor wolf today personally thanked crews working around the clock to keep roads safe. >> take a look at the conditions in york, pennsylvania. about 40 minutes west of lancaster, some cars there are buried up to their windows by snow and many streets have not

been touched by plows. the city government was closed there today and york received about 30 inches of snow. >> ministers and a pastor work to clear the snow at a montgomery county church. nbc 10 in jenkintown at salem baptist church, there was a funeral and the pastor wanted to make sure the family stayed safe. >> it's great that we're able to have contractors who help us with snow removal and we had backhoes come in. but the end of the day good old fashioned grit, determination and muscle. we kind of do like jesus did, he did all of the work and so we want to imitate him. >> probably doesn't happen often but the snow forced the church to close sunday giving the pastor a day off. >> no doubt digging out of the snow takes a toll on the body but what if you have to clear an entire parking lot? that was the task at hand for these in montgomery county. fortunately, with students staying home it gave snow blowers and plows room to work.

>> the blizzard of 2016 may have been a blessing for students scheduled to take the s.a.t.'s over the weekend. local tests were canceled giving students a few extra weeks to study. that is huge for them. most of the tests were rescheduled for february 20. that's almost a month from now. students still need to check for exact dates, times and locations. we have all of that information on the nbc 10 app. they are saying thank you. take a look what the storm brought to the beaches in rehobe rehobeth, sussex county. the waves too much for this little guy. he became stranded and disoriented. he made his way to route 1 and was actually trying to cross the busy street when he was found. we are so happy to report he is doing okay. he is cared for by the merr institute. >> it's probably the last thing on anyone's mind, swimming in the ocean. nbc 10 and north wildwood today, we found this surfer paddling around looking for a good wave.

>> today if you noticed temperatures well above freeze, most of the area saw temperatures around 40 degrees. so, we had more snow melt today. this is a live look down at eighth and market, you still see the snow up on the side of the road. sidewalks of course have been cleared but today we've seen a lot of melting so a lot of the sidewalks are wet and we have a lot of slush on the roads. even if you were able to drive over them today the melting from today is going to be freezing tonight. so, temperatures will be dropping below freezing. ice forming overnight tonight and into the early part of the morning commute tomorrow. then we're tracking rain showers as we go through tomorrow. i think it will be a small chance but not everybody will see these. i think we'll see rain showers tomorrow, just not across the entire area. and temperatures will be back into the 40s. so, it is going to cause even more melting as we go through your tuesday. philadelphia right now 39 degrees, still about mostly clear skies in this shot but we have clouds moving in along with that shower chance tomorrow.

allentown is at freezing. 32 degrees, we're starting to see ice forming there. 35 pottstown, 39 for bensalem, mid-30s much of south jersey and delaware. we go through the overnight hours these numbers will keep dropping and see what has melted freeze over again. here is a look at the snowcover across the area. the current snowcover with the most of it being north and west of philadelphia, the least as you get closer to the shore. but with the next several days our above freezing afternoon high temperatures, then below freezing nighttime temperatures we're going to keep seeing melting and refreezing at night. currently, though, we are nice and dry. but our next weather system which is going to give us a slight chance of showers tomorrow, that's off to our west. not a lot of moisture with this, and it will be in the 40s for most of the area so we'd be looking at rain showers. here is future weather. tonight numbers dropping below 32 degrees for most of the area with the ice warming again. and this is 8:00 tomorrow morning. so if you're philadelphia and north and west you have the best

chance of still seeing ice around by 8:00 a.m. through the afternoon, temperatures around 40 degrees for most of the area again, mid to low 40s with rain showers moving through. then by wednesday morning the models are trying to pick up on a disturbance to the south, could be bringing parts of southern delaware and cape may county possibly snow showers early wednesday. we'll have to keep our eye on that. then we go through wednesday afternoon, back in the 40s. another weather system as we go into thursday is going to be down to our south. area of low pressure, but most of the computer models really keeping it just off our coastline, that's thursday, going into friday. so, there's a chance it could graze the area but as we go through the rest of the week we'll have a better idea on that. tonight, though, ice forming overnight. partly cloudy, temperatures in about the low 20s, north and west, upper 20s philadelphia. tomorrow not as cold, 41, 44 degrees, chance of rain showers, more melting taking place tomorrow. and more freezing taking place as we go through tomorrow night for most of the area. wednesday, thursday and friday now we're going to stay around 40 degrees so we're going to

harry hairston. >> reporter: we are live in southwest chester on styles road. there's a big salt truck, this place has been snowed in all day. look likes the plow trucks are timely getting to work to clear this up. we see a vehicle trying to get out and one of the plow trucks in front of us seems to be stopped for the moment. not sure exactly what they are going to do. but we hope that they will move out of the area and show you what the problem has been. they have been complaining all day trying to get help. we're going to see what's going on and get back to you. reporting live, harry hairston, "nbc 10 news."

now to the cleanup at the jersey shore. after record flooding over the weekend, sky force 10 gives us an aerial view of some of the damage in wildwood, cape may county. for many along the coast it's not unlike the aftermath of hurricane sandy. nbc's rehema ellis joins us live in west wildwood with a better look at the cleanup effort. what is the situation there? >> reporter: there has been a lot of work today cleaning up and assessing the damage. i'm standing on what was a little boardwalk here in this community of west wildwood or what is left of the boardwalk. i want to show you what's left of this section here. this is a bulk head retaining

wall now leaning, the rest of this was supposed to be up at least this high to protect this community from surging water. it completely failed, it went out off into the beach into the water. look over here, this was a little play ground for children. this is completely destroyed. there are communities, pockets of areas here in this community that have a lot of water damage that they are trying to recover from. and people say that one of the things that they are thankful for is so many of them didn't lose power. from 40 to 45 families had to be evacuated during the storm. some of the streets turned into rivers. now they are getting back together and again, assessing the damage. they think that this area here to be repaired may cost from $200,000 to get it back up and running again, and they want it to be secure, it's a serious situation for them. because there is talk of another storm coming and this is their line of protection from flooding from the water.

temperatures begin to drop. >> be careful as a driver. digging out from mounds of snow, good evening. i'm jacqueline london. we have a list of closings at the bottom of the screen. an hour ago philadelphia schools announce they had both will be closed tomorrow. we begin with breaking news, a traffic mess on the schuylkill expressway now. traffic has been backed up for miles around the grays ferry exit for about an hour. all lanes are now open. we can tell you. and we have new information about what happened here. we're told a woman jumped out of a vehicle right in the middle of the schuylkill expressway. she ended up sprawled in the eastbound lanes until an ambulance could get to the scene. you see workers surrounding her there. she is now on the way to a hospital. again, both directions of 76 just reopened but traffic in both directions is very slow. now
