nbc 10 news starts now. new from overnight, snowed in. people parked along this street in germantown are waiting for snowplows as philadelphia crews continue to clean up from the blizzard. ice alert this morning as we take a live look at 95. temperatures in the teens and 20s across thearea. whatever melled yesterday could be frozen on the roads right now. looking ahead, we'll see more melting today. a live look along market street in center city philadelphia. we'll warm into the m.id-40s this afternoon. welcome to nbc 10 news. i'm tracy davidson.

check our information along the bottom of the xroon or our nbc app for school closings. not everybody is seeing the heavy duty cold we're seeing but in the pocono mountains, temperatures in the teens and 20s, they're making snow. look at the teens for allentown, reading and pottstown. while it's 25 in philadelphia. it's well above freezing for dover, millville, atlantic city at 40 degrees. we will see sunshine at least to start with. it's this afternoon that the clouds will take over. look at the temperatures. 29 degrees at 6:00, a little bit of a breeze out of the south/southwest at 9 miles an hour. at 9:00 that will help with the warmup. by lunch time, 40 grows and climbing. dry this morning but i am tracking showers. we could see some of those this afternoon. back with the neighborhood by neighborhood forecast in ten minutes. right now, jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> we're watching the vine street expressway where you can see the roadways are damp. that's potentially a slippery spot there. right around 24th street.

we are open, no ongoing construction, east or westbound, no problems so far at least this morning. the rest of the drive times are doing great, no problems on 95 and the schuylkill expressway. no problems on the blue route schuylkill to 95 and 295 mt. laurel, new jersey around 38, no problems except you can see snow over into the shoulders. tracy? 4:02. here's quick and important blizzard information. more than 300 area schools are closed today which is about half as many as yesterday. there will be trash and recycling collection in philadelphia. if you park at meters or kiosks in philadelphia you will have no problem with violations until tomorrow. ppa is not ticketing today. the city expects all streets to be passable by the end of the day tomorrow. that's the prediction. also new jersey transit and d.a.r.t. will run regular schedules today. septa and philly international are still dealing with delays and cancellation.

overnight, nbc 10 photographers hit the streets looking for places that have yet to be clear. check out the scene along west abbottsford avenue. progress is being made but many streets are still a challenge. deanna durante is live in manayunk. >> reporter: take a look at this street. it's bad enough probably on a normal day, north fowler street, 4700 block in manayunk. we just talked to a resident whç had a ride pick him up at the bottom of the hill at fountain. he said this is the first time his street hasn't been plowed. he's called the city, used the 311 app and he's assuming nobody heard his complaints. it could be until wednesday before streets are passable. video we shot overnight in the fishtown section of philadelphia, again, the same scene. streets that look like they've had a plow come by during the course of the storm, cars are

heading to sea isle city and atlantic city. nbc 10 was at the jersey shore yesterday. we found several damaged beach homes, in long beach township, ocean county, the sea is lapping close to those houses. the nor'easter washed away protected dunes and property in an area devastated by hurricane sandy. the township is trucking in sand to rebuild the barriers. >> we'll start with 600 truck loads. we can probably use 600 truck loads every three days. >> we're one storm away from having another major disaster. >> in wildwood, they are trying to fix the issues here. this is a drone view. governor chris christie is back on the campaign trail. he's getting heat from not staying in his home state. hear him fire back in one town hall meeting.

ice fell from a hahnemann hospital building. they have now blocked the walkway around the blocking to help protect pedestrians. officials here at this giant roped off the area to keep custimers safe. allentown wants cars off the street so crews can plow snow. pashing is being made available at schools. in the lehigh valley, they got up to 32 inches of snow in some spots. that's still creating a challenge for drivers there. storm force 10 with its four-wheel drive was able to get cameras close to one backup in allentown. this white truck got stuck in the middle of the intersection at 14th and chew.

temperatures are still falling right now. just like yesterday morning, we do have icy spots to deal with. many of the same areas that were melting yesterday afternoon have refrozen if it didn't dry up during the day. we'll see more melling during the day today, even though we're in for more clouds. with those clouds, a chance of scattered showers. i'm tracking the showers through pennsylvania at this hour. it is dry in doylestown, 17 degrees, one of the colder spots. northeast philadelphia is at 21. this is similar to yesterday morning. look at millville. south jersey, a big warmup. yesterday millville was 30 degrees colder than it is right now. and it is above freezie infreez around the 40 degree mark. melting at cape may. that's a live view from beach avenue. the warmup, the winds coming out of the south at 12 miles an hour at wildwood. the wind hasn't reached wilmington, philadelphia and trenton, it will. we'll see a light southerly wind

develop to boost temperatures higher than yesterday afternoon's 40 degrees. we'll be watching areas to the west for some wet weather. it's a line of showers that extends from canada down through houston, texas. not a lot of rain there. a chance for afternoon showers. 41 degrees today. also up to 41 for fleetwood andç pennsburg. this afternoon, scattered to light showers in new hope, bordentown and abington. this evening, the showers will be moving to south jersey, might even snow snowflakes first thing tomorrow morning. very light stuff for cape may. milford and smyrna into the 40s. low 40s for wilmington and woodstown. philadelphia, 43 degrees with a chance of afternoon showers. look at the weekend when i'm back in ten minutes. nine minutes past 4:00 right now. let's get you updated on your

commute. it could be icy out there. plan for extra time, take it slow, especially, jessica, you're always saying on the overpasses, the bridges, the ramps. >> right, the ramps especially and a lot of the secondary roads right now. our majors are doing great. this is the schuylkill expressway around gray's ferry. here's 295. over in west deptford around route 130. no problems with the drive times here from the delaware freeway to the delaware memorial bridge. a 23-minute trip. the exit ramps, that's where it's potentially slippery. the pa turnpike, looks good there as well. route 1 to valley forge, a 23-minute trip. new jersey governor chris christie is facing heat over his

4:13 right now. we want to get you up to speed with blizzard cleanup. more than 300 schools are closed today, including philadelphia public and parochial schools. if you park at meters or kiosks in philadelphia, still free. the city expects all streets to be passable by the end of the

day tomorrow. also, we just checked with philly international on their website, there are delays and cancellations. check your airline before you head out. people at the jersey shore are cleaning up from coastal flooding caused by the blizzard. at the same time, new jersey governor and republican presidential candidate chris christie returned to the campaign trail in new hampshire. when a student asked christie why he wasn't in his home state helping out, here's how the governor responded. >> i'm not sure what you expect me to do. you want me to go down there with a mop? the fact is we had the roads cleared, we had new jersey back up. and for the people who did sustain flooding, we had folks on the ground to evacuate them if they needed to be evacuated. no one needed to be evacuated. >> in fact, nbc 10 showed you pictures of rescues an evacuations, more than 100, like this one in wildwood on saturday. christie said his lieutenant governor was in cape may county

along with other officials. the governor said his team was assessing damage and helping business own her may need to apply for loans or grants. in response to that, the mayor of north wildwood released a statement about governor christie's comments, it reads in part, his comments areç disrespectful to the residents who went through a traumatic weather event. this shows damage in wildwood at the landmark hotel. high winds peeled back some of the roofs here. snow and flooding from the storm continue to paralyze entire communities. lauren mayk is live in the digital operations center. what's the outlook for recovery? >> it is slow. it really is. across the mid-atlantic and the northeastern u.s., it looks like piles of snow will be with us for a while. people in washington, d.c. are digging themselves out from more than two feet of snow. cleaning up driveways and

sidewalks is a day-long chore. plows are working nonstop to clear major roads. dump trucks are hauling loads of snow to a stadium parking lot. federal offices remain close. the story is much the same in new york. you still can't get through on many streets there. the city got 27 inches of snow. its second biggest blizzard ever. people were out in midtown manhattan yesterday as businesses re-opened. some new yorkers were still watching their step. >> i was supposed to go to work today. i couldn't go to work because i was afraid of falling. >> authorities are investigating if the deaths of two people found inside their cars are related to the blizzard. new york's mayor is calling for all hands on deck to help dig out from the historic snowfall. and the city is willing to pay for extra help. he's put out a call to hire workers to remove snow and ice from bus stops, crosswalks and

from fire highydrahydrants. workers that qualify can make more than $13 an hour helping to get rid of that snow. i'm lauren mayk in the digital operations center. the head of the pennsylvania turnpike commission is apologizing to motorists who got stranded during the blizzard of 2016. hundreds of vehicles were stuck on the turnpike during the storm. traffic got blocked by a pair of tractor-trailers that couldn't make it up a hill friday night. more work needs to be done to get the state's roads back to normal. >> try to get back to open roads as quickly as possible. local municipalities are trying to do that and pen dot is certainly trying to do that. >> yesterday, the governor personally thanked penndot crews for their efforts.

the temperatures have been coming down. there's a good range of temperatures in the 20s right now in philadelphia. looks similar to yesterday. skies are clear and the water on the delaware very calm. there's very little wind in the city. in fact, there's calm at philadelphia international. 25 degrees. that's 3 degrees warmer than yesterday. we're right in the sameç ballpark. below freezing, anything that melted yesterday and didn't dry out has refrozen. the exception is in parts of delaware and south jersey, that is too warm for anything other than just water on beach avenue. it's melting on beach avenue. the temperatures have stayed warm overnight. look at the teens, though, for chester sprungs, down to 10 right now in quakertown. 13 in coatesville. there's the cold air. look how quickly it changes. newark 22, 37 in middletown and atlantic city at the airport, 40, even a little bit warmer at beach haven while inland, mt. holly is in the 20s. a range of conditions. icy spots from the refreezing overnight. fortunately the timing of these showers is just right for our

area. they're to our west now. by the time they move in this afternoon, the temperatures will be too warm for anything other than rain. futurecast shows progress of the showers, at noontime we'll see mostly cloudy skies and this afternoon, a chance of scattered, light showers. by midnight, most of those are done. one exception, at the shore you can see a chance of rain showers first thing tomorrow morning, mixed in with a few snowflakes. with little to no accumulation. those showers will be moving through fairly quickly. clouds increase with scattered, light rain showers this afternoon. lack at those temperatures. that is even warmer than yesterday afternoon. southwesterly winds to 12 miles an hour. count on some warmer weather this weekend on saturday, we'll get a cold start in the morning with temperatures in the teens. a nice rebond in the afternoon, up to 42 degrees. and turning even warmer for sunday. partly sunny skies and upper 40s on sunday and i've been looking

at some of the extended progression in to next week. we could see 50s next week. some of the mounds will be around for months. >> the melting is good but now we're seeing the refreezing overnight. >> we'll see the temperature trend for most of the rest of the workweek, refreezing each night. >> icy morning commute. let's talk about a morning commute and an accident already into our system. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has that. >> we're on the blue route headed southbound approaching the schuylkill expressway. i'll back out of the way so you can see what's going on. one lane getting by. this is the southbound blue route. we have an overturned vehicle as well and several police officers and crew on the scene trueing to get this vehicle uprighted and back to normal on the roadways. again, a slippery area right in here. this is a little bit of a curve on that portion of the blue route and that potentially could be the reason for this accident

scene. no word why this was caused yet. one lane is getting by. not a lot of traffic on the blue route right now. not a huge backup but it could potentially cause major delays as we continue on with the morning. here's the white horse pike in berlin, new jersey. intersection. you can see wet and over into the shoulders, potentially slippery conditions. >> 4:21. families dealing with the water crisis in flint, michigan can get some help. those concerned about their kids' exposure to lead in the city's water supply can get tested free. the tests are available for churn up to 6 years ole. the national guard continues to deliver bottled water to concerned families. 24 degrees in philadelphia, 21 in wilmington. now to the jersey shore. the cocktail waitresses known as the borgata babes will have to watch their weight. new jersey supreme court said yesterday it will not review a case about the casino's policy of regulating how much waitresses can weigh. an appeals court had upheld a

2013 ruling that the borgata's personal appearance standards are lawful. the casino fired two borgata babes over the years for violating the policy which prohibits servers from gaining or losing more than 7% of their body weight. using a chair or a cone do sa to save a parking spot is illegal in philadelphia. it is legal, however, in boston. find out how this turns violent. hear what rental website air bnb says about this new york igloo.

4:24 from our delaware bureau. plows are working overtime to clear snow-covered streets in wilmington. people continue to dig out their cars, driveways and the sidewalk. take a look at the aftermath in haddon township, camden county. the streets appeared to be plowed but there was a heavy layer of snow. most drivers we saw were taking their time. camden city schools are closed today. the blizzard of 2016 is giving students extra time to get ready for the s.a.t.s. local tests were canceled over the weekend. most of the tests were reschedule for february 20th. students still need to check for exact times and locations. we have all the information on the nbc 10 app. speaking of preparation, a group of friends in brooklyn, new york, couldn't wait for the blizzard of 2016 to arrive. here's why. they built a boutique winter igloo for two and tried to rent
