4:01 pm
i accepted that. i believe that he genuinely feels he misspoke and perhaps said things he wished he had not said. >> reporter: he also told christie he felt the governor showed a lack of respect to local first responders who spent long hours in waist deep frigid water rescuing people stranded in their homes. senator cory booker was here as well. i asked him about christie's comments. you'll hear what he had to say coming up at 5:00. ted greenberg, "nbc 10 news." >> our team coverage continues with cydney long live in trenton. >> you just asked the governor about the mop comment. what did he have to say? >> reporter: well, keith and denise, governor christie said after sleeping on the comment last night in new hampshire he woke up and did have some regret, he wanted to reach out and apologize to the mayor of north wildwood but not to the people, he also said that it was
4:02 pm
a private apology between the two men but that the mayor made it public. i asked him if he regretted his words to the people. here's part of what he had to say. >> what i was objecting to both on sunday, monday and today, is any type of characterization of what happened in jonas here to be anywhere near what happened in sandy. it's not even close. it's not even in the same ball park. now, if your house is flooded, that doesn't matter to you. if your business is flooded that doesn't matter to you but i was not going to allow there to be a conversation which was mostly driven by the media that somehow this was like worse than sandy. >> reporter: now, governor christie initially called the press conference to talk about atlantic city financial dils array but this topic kept coming up and we hear him explain why he says this storm in his words did not reach sandy's devastation, will he visit the shore and what more he had to say you'll hear from the

4:05 pm
falling. this extends into parts of montgomery county near plymouth meeting, norristown and the p.a. turnpike and parts of bucks couldn't around buckingham. so we'll continue watching this small area of rain, that should be moving through the philadelphia area soon. there you see more moisture down to our south and west. so we really just expect some lighter showers tonight. but there is a chance we could see a mix later with this rain continuing. temperatures dropping not really now, though. 49 is the temperature in philadelphia. 46 in chester springs and kenneth square so temperatures well above freezing. 49 northeast philly, more snow melt today with these temperatures, 41 in allentown, 42 in reading, 45 pottstown and quakertown so we're not looking at this freezing on the roadways. but any rain falling will be freezing vor as we go through tonight north and west. most of new jersey in the low 50s. 53 in woodbine, 52 degrees at the atlantic city airport. so for the rest of this evening, it will stay above freezing for the next several hours, and then we'll start to drop below

freezing, 6:00 p.m. a chance for showers and overnight we'll be watching for the wintry mix. more on the seven-day forecast and milder temperatures coming up. >> thank you. it's back to school tomorrow for students in philadelphia public schools. the district made the announcement a few hours ago. meanwhile, some side streets in the city still look like this. snow covered and untouched by plows. this is what it looked like in east mount airy today. crews are pushing to have all streets cleared by tomorrow night. so will they make it and how will they do it? nbc 10's rosemary connors put those questions to city leaders. do they have a formal battle plan? >> reporter: well, denise, we asked the city if they have a priority list to plow streets like this one, you can see that the snow is just way too deep for any car to safely pass through. the city says every neighborhood is a priority but for folks who had a lot of difficulty getting around the past few days, they tell me it feels like they are spinning their wheels literally.
4:07 pm
going nowhere fast. that's how some residents describe their situation. days after the storm. tension is still running high, maybe just as high as the unplowed snow in the middle of these neighborhood blocks. >> this is redick you lurks like you can't even get down our block. the neighbors at the bottom of the block they shoveled out. >> i got a regular job so i had to come out, break my back outside to get out of the snow, then go to work and break my back. >> reporter: pashs has run out for sean elliott. >> if you call school for two days no excuse why the streets nor it done. the side streets and the big streets. >> reporter: the city of philadelphia is now reporting that 80% of residential streets are passable. but that there needs to be continual cooperation from the neighborhoods. shoveling snow back in the road is only part of the problem. >> abandoned vehicles, that's trouble for us and we're trying to do our best to work with ppa

4:09 pm
into the area and about 6,000 requests came through social media. the most popular question is how do i request snow plowing and salting for my street? 311 agents say the best way you can report snow plow or salting needs is through their philly 311 mobile app. you can also post on their facebook page or twitter @philly 311. we'll explain the rules for clearing sidewalks in the next half hour. to read all of the 311 top five questions and requests go to our nbc 10 app. new information on an icy stretch of i-78 in berks county that caused nearly a dozen crashes. most of the interstate is back open to traffic. but one eastbound lane is still closed at this hour. freezing rain triggered the chain reaction crash involving four tractor-trailers, amazingly no one was hurt. we'll have more on this icy mess coming up at 4:30. >> for a closer look at road condition this is afternoon we
4:10 pm
go to nbc 10's mitch blacher out in news force 10 in camden county. what's it like there, mitch? >> reporter: hey, denise, we're just outside of cherry hill, we're driving around some of the side streets in cherry hill. this is about as bad as it gets on these side streets, a little bit of icing, a little bit of snow on the roads but for the most part the main road completely clear, looking at about 1400 miles of road that's needing to be plowed over the past 72 hours throughout camden county. they had more than 100 trucks to do that work. this is -- we're talking about 72 hours of continuous plowing here in camden county. as of now they say they are focusing just on clearing up the intersections and widening lanes, we've seen it day after day, yesterday in news force 10 we were in allentown where they were down to one lane where most of the time the streets were two lanes. here in cherry hill not a problem. most of the lanes are open, they are clear.
4:11 pm
and they are not having too many problems here in camden. they had a varying amount of snow throughout the county, 14 inches to 20 inches is about the estimates that you'll hear from county officials. but all seems to be clear out here in camden county, especially in cherry hill. that's the latest from news force 10. >> thank you. from news force 10 now to sky force 10. nbc 10's on board with a live look over camden. how does it look? >> reporter: you saw mitch up close we're over the city. we're starting to see more of those main streets clearing, the side streets they are getting there. let me show you at the mouth of the delaware river here a lot of ice coming over, we've been seeing birds hanging out here. slowly pan over we look at the neighborhoods in the last couple days have been snowed in. we zoom in, you can see in the city of camden, the side streets are getting better.
4:12 pm

4:15 pm
last november. he says fattah promised to make good on the payment but never did. today fattah told the judge he supports his attorney's desire to withdraw because they cannot agree to the payment arrangements he wants which will require them to go without payment for an extended period of time. the congressman told nbc 10 last week he was focusing his fundraising efforts on his re-election campaign and would deal with his court case after the april election. the judge questioned that the motion to withdraw the law firm is attempt delay the may 2 trial. both the attorneys and fattah deny any such motive. >> the issue is i can't meet a payment arrangement that requires me to short change my re-election effort, right, in order to meet a burden to pay a law firm for a trial that may or may not actually take place on may 2. >> fattah says he's paid out $300,000 in legal fees so far.
4:16 pm

4:18 pm
extraordinary turn out in the 2008 iowa caucuses but if his is high enough including among nontraditional voters sanders says he can win. >> hollywood is mourning the death of actor abe vigoda fame outs for roles in barney miller and the god father. he was a popular guest on the "today" show. he died in his sleep at his new jersey home this morning. he had worked exclusively in theater and tv until he was cast as sal in the god father. it was his role as phil fish in barney miller that made him famous. he was 94 years old. well, more melting took place today. i'm sure you noticed that with temperatures well into the 40s, even in the 50s in some spots. now we're tracking showers, skiers and snowboarders loving it in the poconos.
4:19 pm
the rain is not in the poconos, it's north and west of philadelphia. even as this rain clears, the ice threat continues with temperatures dropping below freezing for most of the area tonight. then we go into the weekend and we get milder so even more melting is going to be taking place. live look out at center city, snow of course still there, but it's slowly starting to melt. that's going to create problems again tonight in philadelphia 49 degrees is the temperature, we are well above freezing, warmer than we were yesterday, so with this we only expect the rain showers right now. so this is important to note. temperatures well above freezing north and west. with that rain moving in, so at this point we wouldn't be seeing the freezing on the roadways, allentown at 41 degrees, 42 in reading, 45 pottstown, flq 46 in west chester, even the poconos, near 50 for bensalem. 51 in millville, 52 atlantic city. what we are seeing again just rain showers across the area. so that's what we see mostly
4:20 pm
north and west of philadelphia. and later on tonight with the showers kind of continuing, we're pushing south, we could see a bit of a wintry mix, that would have to be pretty late tonight. if some of these last north and west of philadelphia we could see a wintry mix there or maybe freezing rain. but currently in chester county we're seeing it across 76 the light rain, this continues into parts of montgomery breaking up your spotty sprinkles across 47 aches and parts of the p.a. turnpike. that will be moving into the philadelphia area, but you see moisture down to our south and west. there's not a lot of it moving in this direction, so really what we're going to see is just light showers moving through. so here's future weather over the next couple hours, still expect to see that through the philadelphia area. by 10:00 p.m. we could see another area moving into new jersey and delaware so kind of pushing to the south and east. temperatures could still be well above freezing in these areas. then we go overnight, temperatures will be dropping down, by 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning we could still see some of this in south jersey and
4:21 pm
delaware. if any of this were to continue north and west that's where we would see freezing rain developing but we'll be watching early tomorrow as we go through the morning to see the wintry mix, a chance it could be by 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon we're looking at temperatures around 40. then colder as we go into thursday morning temperatures in the 20s. so, then we'll see that refreezing. a little more i think. tonight scattered showers chance of mix very late, temperatures falling below freezing. tomorrow though, a chance of early mix farther south so we'll be watching that. temperatures around the low 40s, clouds moving to sunshine in the afternoon, then thursday there's a chance we could see light snow showers or flurries. we're staying mostly dry into the weekend. look at the warm-up by sunday. 47 degrees. >> thank you, sheen af. get this. a major highway through pennsylvania will be closing in 86 mile stretch tomorrow. >> next with traffic trouble ice and snow on the turnpike will cause for drivers tomorrow.

4:26 pm
land county. this will allow crews to retrieve a tractor-trailer. >> this is video of the turnpike from saturday's blizzard. the same stretch of the turnpike had to be closed this weekend so crews could remove hundreds of stranded cars and trucks. >> wet weather is ahead. >> sheena parveen is tracking that rain. >> that's right. we have rain showers around the area so coming up i'll show you where they are, where they are heading and what you can expect for the morning commute. >> plus, the highway rescue taking the internet by storm. when "nbc 10 news" at 4:00 continues.
4:27 pm
4:28 pm
4:29 pm
4:30 pm
right now at 4:30 we're looking ahead to a rainy tuesday night. the first alert radar is tracking a system to our west that will bring us showers, and the threat of overnight icing continues. >> first alert meteorologist sheena parveen is tracking this wet weather. when's it moving in? >> parts of the area are seeing it. it's light rain at this point. temperatures are well above freezing so chester, montgomery county, even parts of lancaster county you're already seeing this light rain falling approaching parts of northern delaware. across 76 here in chester county east near east whiteland, phoenixville seeing light rain, across these interstates we're seeing this falling. again, temperatures are still in the 40s in many spots, norristown seeing light rain near 476 and plymouth meeting. so these areas will continue to see light rain lingering before it finally pushes into new jersey and delaware later tonight. so, it's part of a cold front. you see the moisture streaming in from the south and the west. so for tonight we're still going to keep the chance of showers in the forecast and then we'll have
4:31 pm
to watch it closely with the temperatures. so everyone is above freezing now. this is good news because it's not that freezing rain falling. 45 pottstown, 41 allentown, 49 in philadelphia. northeast philly, so we've seen a good amount of melting today too with these temperatures. 51 in millville, 54 in wildwood. so as we go through tonight temperatures will slowly be dropping off and we'll be watching that moisture too. there is a chance we could see a bit of a wintry mix in spots coming up we'll look at the timing of any of that and also a warmer forecast going into the weekend. >> we want to show you one of the hardest hit areas for the blizzard of 2016. now they hired additional private contracting crews to help. we're talking about the city of allentown. they have more than two front loaders now, two more, about 13 more trucks will hit the streets tonight. crews hope to clear most streets by wednesday to find out when they will come to your neighborhood, go to our nbc 10 app. >> montgomery county ice created
4:32 pm
trouble for people driving on i-78 this morning. >> doug shimell is live with more on the traffic mess left behind. >> reporter: it seems like it wouldn't be a winter without some sort of bizarre multivehicle pileup that strands drivers for hours on the cattle chute known as i-78. no one apparently saw the ice left behind on i-78 in berks county from freezing rain and suddenly small accidents created big ones. >> in the backlog you have other crashes. i can't say for sure which crash was which because you know these guys have a lot of work to do here, documenting 11 crashes. >> reporter: by 7:45 this morning the tangle of cars and tractor-trailers stretched from tilden township to bethel and greenwich in berks county. on the closed access highway notorious for hours long backups, drivers were trapped. >> there is no place to go when things start crashing like on a back country road the cars can
4:33 pm
end up in a field. here we have a jersey wall on one side, guardrail on the other. >> pennsylvania police say they would try to get stuck cars off of i-78 at an exit but that's assuming the troopers could even get there in the first place. >> we either have to sit in the backlog or if we have -- if we're confident to know that the whole road is blocked we can come down the wrong way. that could be dicey too. >> reporter: pennsylvania state police say given just the sheer number of cars and trucks involved in those 11 accidents they say somehow no one was hurt. live in montgomery county, doug shimell, "nbc 10 news." >> this is what it looks like in washington, d.c. digging out. giant snow blowers removing snow from the interstates. the metro system is up and running after two days shut down. it could take days for everything to get back to normal. the blizzard is blamed for at least 44 deaths on the east coast. some died in car accidents,

this will continue for a little while. then i think we'll see it in new jersey and delaware later on this evening. so not a lot of moisture here to deal with but we're seeing some light rain showers, right across 76 near east whiteland township, near phoenixville, the major interstates in montgomery county like 476 and the p.a. turnpike, norristown, hatfield seeing the light rain, and that continues into upper bucks county. wider view showing the stream of moisture coming in from the southeast, this is part of a cold front. so for tonight we're going to keep the rain chance in the forecast. it's going to push into new jersey and delaware. we see it clearing up tomorrow. here is future weather. temperatures above freezing, and then later on tonight, 7:00 p.m. we're going to see a chance of showers but notice how most areas still above freezing. then we go into 10:00 tonight, areas of new jersey and delaware i think would have the best chance for rain at this point. maybe around philadelphia. but we'll have to watch this closely. i don't think temperatures will be dropping below freezing at this point for philadelphia or new jersey and delaware.
