military flight testing over the atlantic. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. >> i'm jacqueline london. >> we did, we know that a fighter jet caused the loud sonic booms that could be felt all across new jersey and we know exactly where those jets were flying, navy aircraft doing routine testing that sits offshore about 15 miles from where we're standing is atlantic city. after a series of phone calls we spoke to officials with the naval test wing in maryland. they sent us this map of where they run those routine missions in a sector called w-107. we also got new video in to nbc 10 as well. let's look at this jet in action. the f-31-c, a joint strike fighter jet used that range 107 that sits off of our coast for

their training missions, flying so fast they break the sound barrier to the point it is loud and clear here on land. we raced to the area of where people were tweeting and facebooking us that they could feel the rumbling and tremors. it began around 1:30 this afternoon and lasted almost until 3:00. two friends were house sitting at the time. >> almost sounded like an airplane was coming and the house was shaking so we heard something, like a boom or like a swishing sound, then the house, the windows were shaking. it was scary. that happened twice in 10 minutes. since then we felt it eight times. >> we came to this strip mall here to see if the merchandise fell off the store shelves but luckily that was not the case. we asked them for video but the tremors and rumbling they say was not enough to cause damage. but they could feel it, they

could hear it and they are glad it is over now tonight. cydney long, "nbc 10 news." come to philly and i like coming to philly anyway so i'm counting on you guys coming through. >> after our invitation to the white house president obama tells me personally he wants philadelphia to come through. nbc 10's invitation to the white nbc 10's invitation to { e white get 100,000 uninsured philadelphians to sign up for so called affordable health care coverage. >> the deadline is three days away, january 31. philadelphia is one of 20 cities targeted by the administration. >> the city with the most sign-ups wins a visit from the president. but we found it's not as simple or as affordable as the administration makes it sound. >> for self employed stylist starla smith it's more than six years since she's had health insurance. >> so you sign? >> i signed on the dotted line. >> this week that all changed.

smith signed up for coverage under the affordable care act. >> i went over 29 plans before choosing which one i wanted. >> she opted for coverage that will run her almost $150 a month in premiums with a $1500 deduct able. during the white house visit the president and administration officials out the add very different story about cost of coverage. >> about 7 in 10 individuals can get health care for less than their cell phone bill, about 75 bucks a month. and that is you know, a good deal to get the kind of security and comfort that you need. >> almost 7 in 10 folks in the marketplace can find a plan for a premium that is $75 or less? where's the peace of mind with the $74 plan? especially with the deduk deductible as high as it is. 6,000. >> $6,000. >> $6,000. it didn't work for me. didn't offer me anything. >> so she took the time to shop

around with help from a navigator, putting in time and effort, is one of the challenges threatening the future of obamacare, says drexel university professor robert field who studied the health care marketplace. >> one of the premises of obamacare is that we're going to be active consumers, that we're not going to walk into the best buy and say what tv should i buy and walk out with that. >> and if the you aren't active, you could find your premiums shot up year to year because you didn't revisit your coverage during open enrollment. one study in philly for example founìk" the lowest cost plan jumped year to year for a 40-year-old from $267 a month to $276. >> i think there will be people who don't follow through because of the challenge. because of the challenge of not understanding. >> is it a signal that your invitation to us to come to washington, to come to the white house, that this is a tough sell, affordable shk a tough sell? >> turns out we're doing better than last year. we've actually hit all of our

marks or exceeded our marks, but i want everybody who can take advantage of it to sign up. >> and if you fail to sign up you face that penalty of $695 or potentially far more because it's based on a percentage of your income. jackie, members of the administration acknowledge the health care act is not perfect. there are tweaks that need to happen but feel each if a republican hostile to it is next in the white house, large portions of it will still not go away. >> they are relying on local leaders to get the word out on sunday's deadline. they mentioned mayor kenney. >> he has been robo calling uninsured people to ask them to sign up and they were very appreciative of that. you can watch more of my interview with the president tonight on "nbc 10 news" at 11:00 tonight when we talk about gun violence on our streets. you can also watch the interview on line, just log on to nbc10.com. >> we have new information about threats against police in chester and the man arrested

accused of making them. police say 23-year-old david millbourn posted threats to kill chester police officers on social media. they tell us millbourn calmly confessed when he was arrested yesterday. >> he admitted that he made threats against the chester city officers and their families, that he posted that threat, and intended and hoped to carry out the threat. >> investigators say millbourn made the threats because he was upset with tuesday's arrest of a 17-year-old girl. she's accused of posting threats against students at local schools. but authorities don't believe the two know each other. running out of room to put all of that snow. these crews in new town square delaware county had to load the piles into a truck to clear this parking lot at the edgemont shopping center. a refreeze is a threat again. >> first alert chief

meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with more on that. >> we had another day of melting which means a night of refreezing. as we go through the cycle very typical after a big winter storms and we certainly had a big winter storm this weekend. the flurries that were on radar, central pennsylvania, pretty much fallen apart. that's not an issue. this area is what we're going to be watching for tomorrow. cold front that does have some rain and snow showers associated with it. but it's not going to affect us tonight. it's now down below freezing in allentown so we may be seeing some of the icy spots very shortly, other places still well above the freezing mark. but it's not going to stay that way. behave the refreezing late tonight, whatever looks wet early tomorrow morning is likely to be icy and the sidewalks and the driveways where you could get some pretty nasty injuries as a result of a slip and fall. as you can see through the night tonight, temperatures drop through the 20s and a good bit

of the area. but we've got a huge warm-up that is in store, in the seven-day in a few minutes. >> take a look, this is video today from the city of reading and life is getting back to normal for a lot of people in parts of the area, reading is still bogged down by this weekend's blizzard. aundrea cline-thomas shows us the lasting effects. >> reporter: the boys and girls club is buzzing with kids hours earlier. it's a needed outlet since the snow closed reading schools for the entire week. >> we have different activities, computer lab, cooking. >> reporter: this is why schools are closed, there are snow-packed sidewalks, mounds at the corners, making it dangerous for the 13,000 students that walk to school. >> i would rather have students safe today and we give up days in the future versus potentially heading to funerals or hospitals

in icy conditions like these. >> reporter: five days later the cleanup continues around the city, people shoveling and crews removing the plowed snow. some kids don't seem to mind having extra time off. there is a trade-off. snow days have to be made up during spring break. >> spring break as of now is going to only be two days. >> that's like for our kids we had plans to go out of reading and now we can't go because of the schools being closed for a week. >> don't bother me. to be safer than to walk and go to school. than it is now. so i'm happy with it. >> in reading, aundrea cline-thomas, "nbc 10 news." >> from the "nbc 10 news" delaware bureau right now the state house is voting on a bill that could put an end to the death penalty in the first state. it would not apply to inmates currently on death row. we'll let you know as soon as the vote is announced. >> the democratic national

convention is on time and on track and on budget for this summer in philadelphia. mayor kenney met with members of the convention committee today with just six months to go now. organizers say their goal now is to involve and inform local businesses. taking a live look at the wells fargo center where that convention will take place. mayor kenney says this event is much different from the world meeting of families and the visit from pope francis and having a central location for the festivities will help down town businesses. >> one venue at wells fargo, hotels and all of our restaurants,q bars, brew pubs ad everything in between v. no fear, there will be lots of places to have fun. >> so, again, the dnc committee is hosting a series of workshops to help small businesses and they are going to be answering questions for restaurant workers during a twitter chat coming up next month. >> people in the francisville section of philadelphia say their health is put in jeopardy.

st. joseph's hospital is their neighborhood hospital that is planning to close next year. it will consolidate with girard medical center. nbc 10 spoke to neighbors who are worried and angry. st. joseph's has been around since the mid 1800s. it's slated to close the end of march. the consolidation will cause hundreds of layoffs and another concern, the fate of current patients. where neighbors will go for medical care in the future. north philadelphia health system had a responsibility to say something to the community at large. had a responsibility to say something to the employees. and, fundamental responsibility of letting patients know what is going to happen to them. >> state representative curr at this time thomas wants to delay the closing. next on "nbc 10 news" at 6:00, gone, in 60 seconds. the big name who had his suv swiped from outside his home

♪ i had an injury to my neck. it wasn't as serious injury it was a herniated disc. anything that could go wrong went wrong. i've been in the hospital twenty three times since. the bills started to pile up. i had nothing to give. we had nothing in the refrigerator. i would be dead and not sitting here right now if it wasn't for pond lehocky.

a u.s. senator's running suv is stolen from outside his home in delaware. senator chris coons' wife was warming up the suv, she went inside only to come back to find it gone. senator coons had left for work when that took place. >> his home is in wilmington. tim furlong found out it has a sticker bearing the senator's name. >> reporter: you drive, then you probably fire up the car early in these cold mornings. >> definitely warm up the car in the morning. >> i go inside, finish making my lunch. >> even senator coons family does it. someone took off the with the ford with a chris coons sticker on it stolen tcht senator had already left for washington.

>> not surprising at all. >> reporter: jessica says she has to sit in her cash but the coons are in one of the nicest neighborhoods. >> where you live it doesn't matter where you are at. >> reporter: it doesn't matter. police departments warn us not to leave cars running unattended. many of us do it even senators and their families. >> a shame our senator, somebody took his car. >> reporter: late today the senator tweeted out, dude where's my car. the good news is we know where the car is, late today a police officer spotted the car at sixth and cleveland. they cut it off with another stolen car, six to eight guys jumped out and took off running. the good news is while nobody is in custody the cash is going to go home and is in good shape. tim furlong, "nbc 10 news." monster pets in south philadelphia joining forces with the spca's animal care network. >> it offers low cost adoption and vaccinations in more

neighborhoods in philadelphia and south jersey. today giving more than $2,000 to the pspca. it's the first partner to join this network, it's going to offer services at three locations. so far more than 60 cats and several dogs from the pspca have been adopted through monster pet stores. we kind of had a monster storm over the weekend and it continues to melt and refreeze each night creating icing in supports of the area. we're tracking some snow showers for tomorrow. parts of the area are going to see that. not everybody is going to see it. and it's likely to melt as it does come down. and a big warm-up. speaking of melting we're going to get a lot of melting of snow over the next week. that is for sure.

we have dry conditions now, mostly cloudy sky of 40 degrees, the wind is light. only 5 miles an hour now. it's going to be a lot stronger tomorrow. 40 philadelphia, 31 in allentown, 35 in reading, 36 in pottstown, 35 in mount holly. places that have the most snow tend to be the coldest and that's the case here. millville 34 degrees, glassboro and wilmington at 37 degrees. how much snow is left, well, that will determine how cold it gets as we go through the night tonight philadelphia with less and less snow around, less and less of an influence. and the temperature fairly steady until we get to about 6:00 a.m. 28 degrees that's enough to create icing. these are the areas that have no snow left. just the map colors. and extreme southern delaware, south jersey, but as we go farther to the north, the blue areas, six inches plus, purple 10 inches plus.

there is some blue in extreme northern delaware and in philadelphia itself. especially northeast philly, northern suburbs have more and the most in the lehigh valley, berks county, upper bucks, upper montgomery 10-plus. yesterday 16-plus in parts of that area so things are improving. you can see this area of showers back to the west. came into our area today, this is pretty pathetic with a few snow flurries, not even reaching the ground. this is more impressive, a line of rain showers followed by snow showers after a cold front and that's going to be watching for tomorrow. so as we go through tonight, the temperatures go down into the 20s. and we see that refreezing for daybreak. then temperatures start to go up and it goes up plenty, so that even when we get some snow showers during the day, midday, early afternoon, it's way above freezing, melts or gets blown

around with the strong winds. by the time it gets cold enough, it's all gone. so, not really anticipating any serious problems with that. mostly cloudy skies with the refreezing coming late tonight. 28 for a low in philadelphia, 22, north and west. tomorrow the main story's the wind. 50 and 25, gusting to 40 with a chance of a rain shower changing to snow showers. seven-day forecast cold start over the weekend, but then up to 46 saturday afternoon, 54 sunday afternoon. then close to 60 monday and tuesday. by wednesday, low 60s, chance of thunderstorms. then it starts getting colder again. >> i'm loving that. who are the eagles looking at to head their personnel department? and doug pederson talks about his role in the draft process. an nhl player deck as referee. video you have to see next.

i'm john clark from comcast sports nets tcht eagles interviewing candidates to be the head of personnel. sources confirm that the birds will interview the steelers coordinator brandon hunt. where is doug pederson and fred wright taking in the final practice at the senior bowl in alpennsylvania doug will have input on who the eagles take in the draft. >> i think the biggest thing is the evaluation process, you know, and having my say on certain positions, certain guys. but again, we've talked about

in terms of the two points and you know, it's always important to go into a break like this on a positive note, positive mind-set. >> take a look at this. calgary flames defense men dennis wideman suspended for. this last night he takes a hit in the corner, there in the red, so he gets hit. as he goes back to the bench, dazed but crosschecks a referee here, don henderson. he said he was dazed from the hit and he looked up at the last second and saw him. he was not penalized on the ice. the ref was in the hospital until 5:00 this morning. wideman apologized to henderson on the ice, he is going to have a hearing with the nhl next week. i'm john clark. we're right back.
