>> this was expected, the atmosphere has been cooling down so we've seen the rain change over to snow for much of the area. accumulations may be limited, especially at first because the temperatures are still above freezing. but as that changes, we are going to see accumulation and that's going to make for slippery conditions during the morning commute as well as some low visibility. now, the changeover has happened very quickly. the rain was moving up the east coast after midnight and now it is snow. lighter, north and west as expected. but that's a steady snow falling in trenton, philadelphia and wilmington. and now it extends past philadelphia into south jersey. the visibility as expected, that's starting to come down. yesterday was low visibility because of fog. today is actually the snow. it's an indication of heavier snow in wilmington with lower visibility under a mile there, down to 1.25 mile in northeast philadelphia. the temperatures hovering just

above freezing for most areas. some spots have cooled to the freezing mark. some accumulation in doylestown before you see it in philadelphia and before you see it in atlantic city. the temperature is the key. 33 degrees and holding for now in roxborough. that will likely come down. the surfaces will eventually cool down as well. that's going to leave us with a pretty good snowfall in delaware, central and southern delaware, 2 to 4 inches of snow. some areas could see a bit more. same story for much of south jersey, inland areas. 2 to 4 inches of snow for wilmington, philadelphia, trenton to the northern and western çsuburbs. trenton is on the borderline, could wind up with a bit more in that area. definitely less north and west. two reasons, it's lighter snow in those areas and it's going to be ending sooner. we'll go through the ending of this storm system hour by hour with the futurecast when i'm back in a few minutes. jessica boyington has first alert traffic. >> we're watching for slippery spots. we're out in west deptford, new

jersey right now, 259 around 130. you can still see, not heavy traffic volume but all of our cameras are giving us the same story, reduced visibility. the lenses are covered in rain water. right now there's no problem with the drive time from the 42 freeway to the delaware memorial bridge. speeds average into the 60s. we want to advice you to go slower than that so you don't come upon a slippery spot and lose control of your vehicle. here's snow falling on the schuylkill expressway that looks like through the curve. no problems there, 14-minute trip into center city. we're starting to see slowdowns because of wet condition, from the blue route to the vine street expressway. here is the vine street expressway right around 24th street. this looks real wet in here. that's also because you can see heavily lighted, so you can see all of the roads. that's where you'll be going, towards 95 no problems there yet

and salt trucks i've seen, every few minutes merging on to 76 and then if you're out at this early hour driving, you'll probably see them parked along major interstates, poised and ready to hit the roads and lay salt when the snow begins to stick. now, 30th street station right now as jessica just mentioned, no reported delays to mass transit. rails are running fine. did i check inç with philadelpa international airport and late last night they issued an alert to travelers saying heads up, because of the weather we're experiencing now, you could have delays if you have an early morning flight. i did just check the board. there are no delays or cancellations right now at philly international. but there are a number of flights going out from 5:00 a.m. on. as bill said, that's when we're going to see the snow really coming down starting around 5:00 a.m. stay with us. i'll have an update. penndot as well, i reached out to penndot to see if they're

doing anything differently since this is during the morning rush. hopefully i'll get an answer back later. >> just behind you, there are snowplows just driving behind you. they're getting in position even as you speak. >> they are. and you know what, we typically see this in the hours before the big storm, the plows lining up in train formation along the shoulders of major interstates or along the exit ramps. they are filled in the back bed with salt so when that snow first begins sticking they can lay the salt to prevent the bonding with the pavement. that's huge as we know for protecting the roads, especially as we head into the morning rush. this will be a tricky one, which is why we're on so early. >> katy, thanks. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> light snow in university city but look at the radar.

you can see heavier snow to the south. we will see some of the heavier snow move into the area. with the light snow that's falling right now, it will take some time before it starts sticking. the roads are still warm. it's still above freezing and just rain in cape may and sea isle city. milford, dover, see something snow, just outside of ship bottom. most of burlington county is seeing light snowfall. it's even lighter farther north and west. this is where will be ending first. this is where we'll see the least accumulation during the day. trenton also at 33 degrees along with wrightstown, 36 degrees at philadelphia international, at the shore, atlantic city is 38. as the atmosphere cools down we'll see everyone change over to snow. 7:00 this morning, that's some steady snow. in fact, the heaviest snow will
