nbc 10 breaking news. that breaking news, one person is dead after a tree fell on a delaware county home this morning with a couple sleeping inside. skyforce 10 was over the scene just a short time ago. nbc 10's live in broomall where crews have brought out a crane to help remove that tree. >> reporter: an elderly woman has died and her husband has been taken to center city hospital. i talked to the police chief a little while ago. he said this is really just a very sad accident that happened and it's possible the victims

could have been in there for more than two hours before anyone called for help. he says that some in the neighborhood reported hearing a loud crash between 6:00 and 6:30 this morning. and it wasn't until a neighbor came outside and heard calls for help from the man who was trapped inside that home that they called 911. it took about 70 minutes for investigators and rescuers to be able to get that man out. they tell us he did know at the time that his wife passed away. they are not identifying the couple. they do say the elderly man was conscious and alert and screaming for help. >> i saw a tree in a back bedroom and two people trapped in a bed. and there was a male in that bed. he spoke to me. i came back out and started to set things up. >> reporter: what'd he say? >> get me the hell out of here. >> reporter: seriously? >> seriously. >> reporter: about 90 feet tall, a beech tree, 70 years old.

they say they can't say for sure that this accident is weather related. the police chief says trees in the township fall a lot, but they can't say in this case it had anything to do with the weather at this point. again, that male getting treatment at presbyterian hospital. reporting live in broomall, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. thank you. we're following more breaking news in new york city where a crane collapsed killing one man and injuring at least two other people. these are shots from the scene in lower manhattan. you can see the crane took up much of that city block. it hit several buildings as it fell and ended up on top of several cars. and this is surveillance video. sources tell our sister station in new york that the person who was killed was sitting in a parked car at the time of the collapse. officials are still trying to figure out what caused it. this morning's winter storm still dumping flakes on parts of our area. here's a live look from hamilton

township, atlantic county. we've seen some of the heavier snow falling in parts of south jersey and down at the jersey shore. here's a live look at cape may. snow there is still falling at the shore. that's why the first alert continues for another hour. the storm knocked out power to about a quarter of homes in smyrna, kent county, delaware. the heavy wet snow can cause problems for the power lines, you can see. here's a live look now from stormforce 10 at the road conditions in millville, cumberland county. snow is making things a bit more treacherous for drivers in many parts of our area. live look now at i-95 in south philly. traffic is moving okay now along the girard bridge. several students delayed during the commute. here's what it looks like near 30th street station in university city. it was snowing there this morning. but you don't see that on the

roads now. it was a quick moving storm this morning. here's a live look at the radar showing where the snow is falling right now. the last of the snow is about to move offshore. and the most snow we saw during our morning was in evesham township, burlington county. you can see the snow building on the roads before the sun even came up. this is what it looked like when the snow was coming down in north philadelphia around 5:30 this morning. you can see people there doing their best to stay covered. they were boarding those buses at the transportation center at broad. this was around the same time in cheltenham township, montgomery county. a coating of snow. not too hard to clear off. we have live team coverage of the storm from nbc 10 crews spread flout the region. we begin with sidney long who is live in atlantic county. sidney. >> reporter: vai, i can tell you

this snow this morning has been persistent. it has been falling since 5:30. i have my back to the black horse bike for several reasons. first of all, the slush is coming off of the roadway here. and take a look, we have about two to three inches on the ground right here in hamilton township. while these roads are a slushy mess out here, vai, we can tole you they are manageable and passable. a trying end to the workweek for employees saying it took twice as long on his ride into south jersey from wilmington, delaware, amidst heavy snow and school buses and salt trucks and everyone else braving this wintry mix. >> 18-wheelers are going so slow right now. low hanging branches, they're hitting them all and shooting snow everywhere. >> reporter: what began as rain overnight quickly turned to snow and it accumulated on roadways to mays landing just as soon as the temperatures dropped. state police responded to cars that went off the road. the snow caused limited visibility. this is the egg harbor toll

plaza on the atlantic city expressway. and street signs caked in snow along with slush that slid down the windshield. all adding to poor driving conditions that stretched several hours into the day. shamila alan was surprised schools stayed in session. >> at first i was because it was nasty and usually here they'll cancel but i guess the kids are still going to school. hopefully it will be okay by the time they get out. >> reporter: for eckel who relies on sunshine to do part of his job, snowy start canceled before he even got started. >> we were supposed to get on a roof here in a little bit, but i don't think it's happening. >> reporter: yeah, that's not going to happen. no solar panel installation, vai. just salt on this snowy and wintry day. police do tell me that they have had several minor accidents out on the roadways this morning, but again, this snow is persistent, falling sideways. it is continuing well into the

afternoon. we're live in hamilton township, cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> get back inside and get warm. our live team coverage continues at the nbc 10 drew smith live in stormforce 10 for us this morning. drew, how are roads looking where you are? >> reporter: well, vai, they're doing better right now. i want to show you what we're seeing. you can see the snow is up on this building here to the left. it's sticking to the sides. so what's happening right now is a lot of that snow that's sticking to the side of houses or power lines is actually dropping down on to the roads. but as you can see a lot of the melting has happened so far. and some places the snow never even really stuck to the roads themselves. but where we are in millville right now you can see the roads are fairly clear. but again, something you want to look for is that snow that's dropping down off the power lines and dropping onto cars. that can be something you want to watch out for. live in stormforce 10, drew smith, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, drew. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has a look at road conditions right now. jessica, what are you seeing out

there? >> well, vai, we are definitely seeing things get better, but still seeing parts of south jersey and around the shore looking a little bad. here's the garden state parkway around the great egg toll plaza. you can see snow still falling in the area. really reduced viz blsibilivisi. better safe than sorry. here's the new jersey turnpike down to 45 miles per hour between the dell memorial bridge. and we are following delaware's twitter today. on i-495 northbound and southbound speed is slowed due to the weather. girard, expressway at 95, doing pretty normal. sun coming out on the schuylkill. there are some speed restrictions on the area bridges still because of this though the kmom do commodore, barry, backups over

that, vai. thank you, jessica. people in delaware county had to clean up their cars before they could hit the roads this morning. we found this guy brushing away the snow along bell meade avenue in havertown. nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here with the forecast. >> as you just saw sunshine in the area going to help melt this snow pretty quickly. even in cape may there's a live view things are getting brighter as the system moves out and the snow ends. you can see over the last hour the back edge of that continuing to move eastward. we have a few flurries in portions of lancaster county and berks county right now, but so far not amount to anything. southern delaware it's over. cape may it's just about over. atlantic city, still snowing a little bit. but not as heavy as it was an hour ago. and even in ocean county, long beach island not snowing as hard as it was just even a few minutes ago. the snow has kept the temperatures down a bit in new jersey, but it's still above

freezing. the sun is getting through those clouds. the radiation helping to melt that snow. we're at 37 degrees on our way into the 40s. as we go through the afternoon a lot of sunshine. and then, well, we have a nice weekend too, but there's more snow in the seven-day. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, glenn. our first alert team coverage continues now in philadelphia where the snow moved out a few hours ago. but there are still some wet spots on the roads out there. nbc 10's katy zachry has been monitoring. >> reporter: what a nice change, vai. the sun is helping things tremendously out here. there are still wet spots on the roads throughout philadelphia, but let me tell you this is a vast improvement from what we saw before the morning rush and during the morning rush. now, inside 30th street station there are still delays for

just about 11:15, and we have breaking news in montgomery county. a fire at a home in montgomery county killed one person.

we just got this video from the scene on markly street. this is in norristown. you can see the damage to the building. we learned that the person who died is among five people who were in the home when this fire started. the cause of this fire is under investigation. decision 2016. with just a few days to go now until the new hampshire primary, bernie sanders and hillary clinton clashed in their first one-on-one debate following the opening handshake, the two got into several fiery exchanges. their biggest battle came over campaign financing. sanders called for the end of big money in political campaigns, and he took aim at clinton. >> i am very proud to be the only candidate up here who does not have a super pac, who's not raising huge sums of money from wall street. >> if you've got something to say, say it directly. but you will not find that i ever changed a view or a vote because of any donation that i

the entire area. we started with rain. it changed over to snow. and then snow moved out. now the shore snow is ending. we've got a re-freeze tonight. things are melting this afternoon. you've seen that drill before. and we have more snow in the forecast early next week. traffic is moving along fine outside station and city avenue. streets still a little wet, but the temperature's well above freezing, 37. fairly light wind, only 5 miles an hour. and there's one of the last places to see the snow end in cape may. that's a live view out there. and they had some pretty nice snow for the last few hours. washington township and wrightstown some of the cold spots. right near the freezing mark because it's been snowing there. and it stopped earlier in chester springs, and wilmington, that's why it's warmer there. and reading and allentown hardly had any snow. so that's the warmest spot.

coatesville and oxford. the sun's rays helping to melt the snow as it hits whatever is left. and there's not much left there as you can see. we'll go back down. you can see it's over in delaware. over in cape may itself. and just about to move offshore. and the wide view shows the whole thing pulling away. new england got hit much harder than we did. but we've had some places with three to four inches of snow. winslow township in hj hj, mt. holly new jersey, most of these places that had significant snow were in new jersey. 2.8 at cape may courthouse. it's not over there. sheltenham township in the philadelphia area, 1.5 inches. in princeton over 3 inches. port norris 3 and blue bell 2 inches of snow. we'll keep you updated and have more of that coming this afternoon. the futurecast shows sunny skies as we go through the afternoon.

temperatures getting into the 40s and then as we go through the night tonight you can see dropping into the 20s north and west. and that will help cause a bit of a re-freeze, be some slick spots perhaps first thing in the morning. we've got a really nice day coming on saturday. then another nice day on sunday. how about that? today the snow ends at the shore, we've got clearing coming in, high temperatures around 43 in philadelphia, 40 north and west. and then the seven-day forecast. tomorrow pretty nice day, sunday is super sunday, 48 degrees with lots of sunshine. then the next storm develops. the computer models pretty much in agreement that something develops off the east coast. this is not similar to the blizzard. and it's not similar to what we just saw last night and this morning. so it's kind of in between. and we'll talk more about that in the next couple of days. monday night and into tuesday

nbc 10 breaking news. an update on breaking news that we are following this morning. one person is dead after a tree fell on a delaware county home this morning with a couple sleeping inside. skyforce 10 was over the scene

just over an hour ago. nbc 10's deanna durante has been on the scene gathering much of the details. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: we can tell you family members have left the scene here. they did not want to talk about what happened here. they were seen loading up a car of belongings, presumably personal belongings here. keep in mind here this scene still active with crews trying to remove the tree off of that house. take a look at video shot just a little while ago. investigators tell us it was about 6:00 or 6:30 people in this broomall neighborhood heard this crash. but it wasn't until about 8:30 that they heard the screams for help. so that couple could have been trapped in there for two hours or longer. now, firefighters tell us it took them more than an hour to rescue the elderly man who was awake and talking to them throughout the entire time. sadly his wife did not survive. they tell us that the tree fell on top of the house trapping that couple in their bed. >> it's the kind of job where

you're on your knees using power tools and crowbars and things like that. a very hands-on kind of rescue. >> reporter: now, that elderly man taken by ambulance. we do know that a helicopter was called in to try and get him to a center city hospital quickly, that he is at penn presbyterian hospital in philadelphia right now. again, rescuers clearing the scene here. but a tree company still trying to remove the tree off the home. we're going to look into what more could have caused this. right now investigators are telling us that they don't believe that it was weather related, but they are still trying to figure this out. one rescuer telling me it appears to be just a very sad but freak accident. reporting live in broomall, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> deanna, thank you. we have new information about the breaking news that we're following in new york city where a crane collapsed killing one person who was sitting inside a parked car. and this is surveillance video from the scene. in the past hour we've learned

that the crane was being lowered because of strong winds at the time of the collapse. the crane is 15 stories high and smashed into several buildings on its way down. stay with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 news app for more information on this story that's still developing right now. meanwhile, snow from the winter storm this morning has been persistent for parts of the south jersey and jersey shore. a slushy wet mess on the roads as you see but cars are getting by. near the jersey shore a thin layer there coated highways and egg harbor township, atlantic county. heavy flakes reducing visibility but traffic was moving along. the snow is sticking to sidewalks and other paved surfaces in smyrna, kent county, delaware. one man using his plow attached to a tractor to clear his walkway there. and we've been using stormforce

to monitor changing road conditions in our area throughout the morning as we take a live look at what the drive is like right now in vineland, cumberland county. we've seen crews out on the roads since early this morning making them safe for drivers. our photographer spotted that salt truck on washington lane in cheltenham township, montgomery county. the snow was cleared and the sun is shining in the city. taking a live look at i-95 south philadelphia at the girard point bridge. pennsylvania counties were spared of a majority of this morning's snow. we kick off live team coverage with cydney long in atlantic county. the snow was still coming down when we checked in with you about half an hour ago. what are conditions like now? >> reporter: vai, we have good news. the first shot looking a touch brighter because mother nature is now cooperating. take a look, the sun is out out here. so while the snow is persistent falling sideways for six hours, it has finally tapered off.

we can see the black top. the roads are just wet, but they are manageable now that the salt trucks and plows have moved through. at the very least there was 3 inches on the ground. at the very best it's been a major inconvenience for drivers this morning. >> not too bad. just slushy. no ice or anything like that. >> reporter: austin and his partner started their day on a mission to install solar panels on the roof of a new jersey business. mother nature however took over ruining those plans only after a commute that took twice as long as normal. the wet, wintry conditions included slush-coated street signs, windshields and roadways. >> we do solar for sunny mack and we were supposed to get on the roof here but i don't think it's happening. >> reporter: drivers were up against tough conditions sharing the messy ride with salt trucks and plows clearing the way pass after pass, especially since schools stayed open. we saw some cars off the roadway along the atlantic city expressway. thankfully temperatures hovered a touch above freezing to prevent what could have been a

skating rink friday commute. >> i live right down the street and it was okay. i left a little early because it's going to be cold today, but i was trying to take it easy. >> 18 wheelers are going so slow right now. and low hanging branches, they're hitting them all and shooting snow everywhere. >> reporter: now, while atlantic city electric did have some hundreds without power, only dozens left that need to be restored across south jersey. police also texted us to remind us that this has been a heavy snow. it is weighing heavily on power lines and trees. almost every one we talked to allowed for extra time and took precautions out on the roadway throughout the morning. and they will continue to do so into the afternoon. live in hamilton township, cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. good work. our live team coverage continues now with nbc 10's drew smith. and he is live in stormforce 10. drew, tell us where you are.

>> reporter: well, vai, we've driven up to vineland, cumberland county. i don't know if you can pick this up on our camera, but there is snow falling from trees and power lines. and there's just a lot of water along the sides of the road, the melting has really started now that the sun has come out. and you can see right in front there's some power lines that run over the road here. and that snow it's falling right off. this is really that sticky snow that's stuck to all those power lines, tops of roofs, signs even. we were over in millville earlier and some of like the stop signs were covered with this snow. but now the melt is on. a couple minor accidents we noticed today, but so far a lot of people have been able to get to work just fine. and people hoping really the melting will happen as long as the sun stays out here. live in stormforce 10, drew smith, nbc 10 news. >> drew, thank you. the windshield wipers were working hard and overtime driving along the atlantic city

expressway this morning. the snow was falling fast, but not too many cars were on the roads. drivers trying to take it easy. and take a look now at the amount of snow on the ventnor boardwalk. flakes falling pretty hard and strong winds blowing all that snow around. beach looks more like a winter wonderland right now, this morning anyway. roads were covered in a thick wet snow in marlton, burlington county this morning. low visibility has drivers slowing along many of the major roads. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with another look at our forecast. hey, glenn. >> hey, vai. yeah, it's a good thing the temperature is where it was or that heavy wet snow would have been sticking all over the place and if it was a bigger storm, you would have had a lot more weight on the tree limbs and power lines. there would be a lot of power outages with that. that's what they're getting up in new england right now. well there's cape may, and we're actually seeing blue in that sky. so this is one of the last spots to see the snow end.

and you can see it on the radar. it's almost offshore, a couple of flurries in lancaster county and in southern berks county, maybe going down to coatesville in the next hour or so, but it's not like the storm is coming back. nothing in cape may county now. atlantic city just about to see the end of it. and in ocean county you're the winner of the snow sweepstakes. toms river just reporting 6 inches of snow from the storm. 37 in philadelphia now. warmer north and west where there was less snow and an earlier appearance of the sun. and we're going to be seeing that sunshine as we go through the afternoon temperatures getting into the 40s, but then some re-freezing tonight and some more snow coming later on during the seven-day. i'll have that in a few minutes. >> all right, thank you, glenn. we want to show you how quickly this winter storm moved through our area this morning. this is a time lapse video of

and we are following breaking news in montgomery county. we've learned one person is dead after a house fire in norristown. andrea cruz with telemundo 62 is there live. andrea, tell us what you've learned. >> reporter: hi, vai. i can tell you right now there are still crews here at the scene working to put out possible hot spots. and we do know that there is a body inside this twin story single family home. according to officials the norristown fire department responded to the two-alarm fire at 8:54 this morning. officials tell us the fire appears to have started in the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor. but what's mostly contained to this one home. there are also unconfirmed reports that one man might have jumped out of a window. we do know that one male was transported to the hospital this morning. there also was a reported

entrapment when the firefighters first responded to the scene. and we know one person did not, unfortunately, make it out, five family members inside at the time the fire took place. back outside i can tell you some family members still live at the scene. they are very emotionally distraught. some of them are actually claiming that one fatal victim is a young boy. however, police and fire officials at this time they are not confirming the age or the sex of this one fatal victim. so of course we will keep you updated as soon as we are able to identify that person. live in norristown, andrea cruz, nbc 10 news. well, new research shows whooping cough booster shot given to middle schoolers provides only a short window of protection. the boosters recommended at the age of 11 or 12 because the vaccine given before kindergarten don't last through adolescence. but now a new study shows that booster is only moderately effective for the first year.

music program. allison, let me start with you. what's in store for this weekend's show? and what can audiences expect? >> we're doing all the hits of this legendary woman, who i grew up on especially aretha franklin's "natural woman," which i love. we're doing all of her top hits and we're going to have a lot of fun. >> so many iconic songs. diane, g.a.p. is part of the pops in schools initiative. i want to ask you about the partnership, the role your students have in tonight's show. but before that let's take a listen to a rehearsal that your choir had with allison yesterday. >> great. >> here it is. ♪ ♪ heart trembling whenever you're around ♪ >> those kids are way too young to really know the music, but

you can tell by the way they're moving they know the music. right? >> they do. in fact, when we mentioned it a few weeks ago that we were doing carol king medley they said -- >> who? >> and i said you're going to know these songs. and my colleagues we started to play the music and they, oh, we know that one. yes, we've sung that one. and the ones they didn't know now they love. >> yeah. >> that's what's so timeless about her music. >> her mom and dad's sound tracks or cd. >> right. >> allison, you're from this area. you're a graduate of springfield high school. >> i am. >> what has it been like for you to be back and to perform in your hometown? >> it's amazing. i haven't performed here since i left in '97. this is a great homecoming for me. it's exciting. my family is coming. i'm really excited. >> the biggest part is probably trying to get tickets for everybody. >> absolutely. it's selling so well, so it's really exciting to come home to brotherly love. i'm excited.

>> what is it about carol king's music that makes it so timeless, so inspiring? what is it about her muse snick. >> i think for me carol king was my hero when i was growing up. and carol king has written a song for every emotion you are feeling. if you're depressed, she's got a song for that. if you're happy and in love, she's got a song for that. if you're unloading that guy from last week, she's got a song for that. there's something that resonates with pretty much every emotion you go through. and they're beautiful songs too. so if you put that together, that makes her a champion. >> allison, how about you? >> yes, it's the music and lyrics for me. just really touched me. so i just think i call her the queen to me for song writing, for me. she's just amazing. every emotion, everything that you're going through you can relate to one of her songs. she had over 200. more than 200. so you have so many songs to pick from to relate to. >> and here's part of what i find fascinating is you're african-american, obviously you're white and her music sort

of transcends. >> diverse. >> it's diverse, right? everybody likes it. everybody hears it. and everybody can sort of connect with it. there are three carol king songs concert tonight at 8:00, saturday and sunday at 3:00 p.m. it's all happening at the kimmel center on broad and bruce streets in center city. for more information head to our website. we have a link at nbc10.com or check out the nbc 10 app. allison, diane, thank you very much for coming in. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> just about everybody woke up this morning with snow falling. and it's just about all over right now. the last of it going out to sea from the shore. we do have a refreeze coming in tonight, whatever melted during the day today refreezes tonight. and we do have more snow in the

forecast in the seven-day. this is i-95. we've been showing you since it was dark. and it was snowing hour after hour after hour. but it's over and the sun's out. 37 degrees, the temperature will be going up a bit during the afternoon, at least into the 40s. now, in the poconos they really didn't get any snow from this, but it's now going to be cold enough to make snow. and they're likely to get some of that next week with that storm we're talking about. so they're in much better shape than they were just a few days ago. you can see 37 in philadelphia. warmer in chester springs and wilmington because the snow ended sooner. and the sun came out. even more so reading, pottstown, allentown, 39 degrees. virtually no snow in allentown, just a trace of snow. while it was pretty significant of course in south jersey and in especially the southern half of

delaware. and north temperatures over 40 already. there's the last of the snow, the last flakes. and you can see it's moved out of delaware, it's moved out of cape may county. just about out of atlantic county. and atlantic city area. we have a few flurries in chester county. but that is about it. we had several places with three to four inches of snow, most of those in new jersey. cape may courthouse around 3. and philadelphia international itself we only had about 0.3 less than half an inch officially at the airport. a lot of that snow melted. we had a lot of hours of it but didn't amount to that much. in princeton over 3 inches of snow. and as i said earlier, the winner is toms river in ocean county, 6 inches of snow. as we go through the evening, temperatures start to go down.

and below the freezing mark so you'll see some freezing of what melted during the day today. it's not a real hard freeze. you can see it's not going to be real, real cold tonight or tomorrow. just cold enough. for the day the snow ending at the shore almost any minute now followed by clearing and high temperature about 43 degrees. seven-day forecast got a really nice weekend here. temperatures a little bit above average for this time of the year, especially sunday some super weather for the super bowl. and we start clouding up on monday. monday night and into tuesday that's the next storm we're talking about. we're not necessarily talking about anything like we had a few weeks ago. and we're not talking about what we had early this morning. different type of system. different challenge in the forecast covering different parts of the area. so you just can't look at the
