"nbc 10 news." now to a bizarre accident in delaware county. a tree came crashing into a couple's home while they were sleeping. it landed right on the bed where they were laying but no one else knew it for hours. it all happened just before dawn today on james road where nbc 10's deanna joins us. what have you found out? >> reporter: take a look, you can see crews are still here trying to patch up the back end of this home. the man was inside we're told he was screaming for possibly two hours. you can't see from the front of the home the damage done here by a tree. and the trees are all around this neighborhood. >> i'm still in shock. >> reporter: it took over an hour to rescue the elderly man trapped. the man was awake and talking. >> when i went inside the house to do my size up i saw a tree in a back bedroom and two people

trapped in the bed. there was a male in that bed, he spoke to me, i came back out and started to set things up. get me the hell out of here. >> firefighters think the tree fell on this home at the bottom of a cul-de-sac around 6:30 this morning. but they say it wasn't until after 8 when they were called. a neighbor heard the man screaming for help and she was leaving for work. >> we brought a crane in. you can see in the driveway, that secured the tree, so that it didn't move. and then we basically cut the tree and structure members off of these people. >> the work was delicate. not sure if the back side of the house or floor would collapse. the man was taken to the hospital. his wife has died. as the two were laying beside each other while police have yet to release the name, they were long time residents, many couldn't help but come and see the damage for themselves. >> we had branches and the wind has been bad but nothing like that. but it is freaky.

>> reporter: that's how rescuers describe what happened here this morning, a sad but freak accident they say they can't be sure why that tree fell on the troof but again you can see the damage here not visible from the front end of the house. it took a neighbor from the side view to hear those screams and see what had happened. breaking news from overseas an earthquake has struck taiwan. it had magnitude of 6.4. there are reports that a building has half collapsed. we'll continue to monitor the situation again an earthquake in taiwan with a magnitude of 6.4. the flakes falling pretty hard down the shore. take a look at the snow along the ventnor board walk. the beach looked like a cross country ski area. a look from the cape may camera,

parts of south jersey got the most snow from this morning's winter storm. by this afternoon the sun was back out. it's not much left from the snowfall here in montgomery county. you can see just a few flakes left coating the benches and the sidewalks there in jenkintown. the next threat a friday night freeze. >> sheena parveen is here with a look at our friday night forecast. >> yes, so we're watching the snow that fell this morning that coated some of the roadways and sidewalks, made them wet. we have puddles. the snow is now in new england. we're drying up but as we go into tonight here is a look at the snow cover across the area now. untreated welt surfaces will turn icy. temperatures will be dropping below freezing so now we're seeing pretty much everyone with a thin layer of snow, but a lot of what we had fall today has melted across much of the area. again, it's the wet roadways and sidewalks we're going to watch for. 42 in philadelphia, 41 millville and wildwood, so temperatures

well above freezing at the moment. near 40 in allentown and pottstown so these numbers will help the snow continue to melt but then tonight we're going to see that refreeze. so by 7:00 p.m. we should be around 37 degrees, cold and windy still. by 11:00 p.m., right near freezing, temperatures getting colder, some spots will be in the low 20s. but by 7:00 tomorrow morning right below freezing through the philadelphia area. icy spots will be around on the untreated surfaces. then your weekend looks really nice before we track another chance for snow next week. i'll show you that forecast coming up. >> the morning commute was messy, the snow made driving conditions tough in most of new jersey. cydney long was out before dawn driving from county to county as that rain turned to snow. >> reporter: it's been a trying end to the work week for employees like austin. it took twice as long friday from wilmington, delaware in the midst of heavy snow. and besides school buses and

salt trucks and everyone else braving this wintry mix. >> 18-wheelers are slower now. and like low hanging branches are hitting them shooting snow. >> reporter: what began as rain turned to snow and accumulated on roadways, just as soon as the temperatures dropped. state police responded to cars that went off the road, the snow caused limited visibility, this is the egg harbor toll plaza on the atlantic city expressway and street signs caked in snow along with slush that slid down the wind cheeld shooeld all adding to poor driving conditions that stretched several hours into the day. allen was a little surprised schools stayed in session. >> i looked out the window, it was nasty and usually i know they will cancel but i guess the kids are going to school so hopefully it will be okay by the time they get out. >> i dropped my kid off at school and that parking lot was slushy. >> a snowy friday cancel add job

even before it got started. >> we do solar for sunny mack and we're supposed to get on the roof in a bit but i don't think that's happening. >> while atlantic city electric reported hundreds oustages only a dozen or so remain. police across the region texted us to remind drivers and folks out in these conditions today, it is a heavy wet snow, this snow is weighing heavily on power lines as well as tree limbs,t7uját we spoke to took extra precaution out on the road throughout the morning, they will continue to do so through the afternoon. cydney long, "nbc 10 news." and not a good morning to be out waiting for the bus. this is what it looked like near broad and olney in north philadelphia. look as people did their best to stay covered at the septa transportation center. the storm knocked out power to a quarter of the houses in kent county. crews have been busy working. the heavy wet snow can cause problems for power lines.

building. this happened in lower manhattan. the crane stretches more than 15 stories high. now to video on the ground after the crane landed, smashed into buildings on the way down, eventually landed on several parked cars. crews on the ground showed us this scene here, a man who had just stepped out of one of those cars was killed. of the three other people hurt two are in serious condition, the other had minor injuries. new york's mayor toured the scene today and spoke about what he saw afterward. >> it's a very painful day. i'm not going to minimum niz what's happened. we have to figure out what happened, we have to make sure it doesn't happen again in the future. >> the area is blocked off as investigators try to figure out what caused the crane to fall. because the crane was being lowered workers were directing pedestrians away from it otherwise that street would have been full of people. live in the digital operations center, keith jones, "nbc 10 news." we have new information on a

high-speed chase captured by sky force 10 last night. you see the video there, police tell us the man behind the wheel was henry davis iii, he is under guard at christiana hospital after breaking his arm in the crash. authorities say it began when he robbed a cell phone store. officers used gps in the stolen phones to track them across the state line. davis eventually crashed. he is charged with fleeing police and recklessly endangering a person. more charges are likely, once he returns to pennsylvania. >> a philadelphia man gets more than 30 years behind bars for the kidnapping and torture of a jewelry store worker in center city. he and two others approached the woman, used a stun gun on her, bound her and dumped her in a cemetery. police say shaheed planned the attack. he has maintained his innocence. >> philadelphia rapper meek mill avoided jail time after violating his parole, a judge sentenced the music star to 90

days house arrest. that's after ruling he violated his probation for a drug and gun possession conviction. this is video of meek mill speaking to students in southwest philadelphia yesterday. he says he was on tour and his concert schedule was the reason he violated probation but prosecutors say the violations include unapproved trips to join his girlfriend and fellow entertainer in other cities. she was at today's sentencing hearing. >> in montgomery county the principal of shelton high is warning parents after a social media buzz about what's called a school brawl week. in a letter the principal says media messages claim there will be fights starting monday. she says it appears to be modeled after events at abington high. there have been at least five fights at abington over the past few days, videos seen here of those fights were posted online. with the hash tag abington fight week. now there is increased security at the school and the school says the students involved could be expelled and charged.

20 minutes of nonstop news, new information just in concerning kathleen kane. the supreme court rejected her request to reinstate her law license. the court suspended the license in june. kane is fighting charges that she leaked grand jury material, then lied under oath about it. now to decision 2016, coverage, with four days to go before the new hampshire primary republican donald trump is back on top in the latest poll. the nbc news "wall street journal" maris pole has trump getting 30% of likely gop primary voters in new hampshire but senator marco rubio is quickly gaining moving up at 17%, senator ted cruz who won monday's iowa caucus is up to 15%. the other three republican candidates hoping to have a breakout moment in new hampshire are trailing, govern john kasich who has the most campaign stops in the granite state is getting

10% of the vote, followed by jeb bush at 10% and new jersey governor chris christie with just 4%. i should say bush there with 9%. 7 of the gop candidates will debate tomorrow night in new hampshire. kasich, bush, rubio, trump, cruz, ben carson and christie. carly fiorina will not be on the stage but asked the republican national committee to demand that abc news put her at a podium. officials with the network say she did not meet their criteria to take part. the two democratic candidates were back on the campaign trail today after their first one on one debate on msnbc. it was hillary clinton and bernie sanders final showdown before tuesday's new hampshire primary. both clinton and sanders targeted each other s in a heatd exchange. she called on the senator to end what she called his smer campaign. sanders attacked clinton being part of the establishment and in the pocket of wall street

historic visit. the pontiff will make his stop one week from today and hold talks with the patriarch, it could be a major step to they'll rift between the western and eastern branches of christianity. raul castro organized the meeting after hosting the pope last year. >> there is growing evidence the zika virus can be passed to others through sexual contact. today the centers for disease control released new guidelines targeting pregnant women and their partners. erica edwards has those recommendations. >> pregnant women whose partners travelled the countries where zika virus is spreading should either not have sex or use condoms until one of two things occur, the man tests negative or the woman delivers her baby. that new guidance comes amid growing evidence linking zika to a devastating birth defect where babies are born with abnormally small brains. >> we understand that this is

anxiety provoking for women who are pregnant and their families. >> zika is spread mainly through mosquitoes. health officials in dallas said they confirmed a rare case where it spread through sexual contact. viral particles can also be found in blood and saliva but scientists are still trying to determine whether zika can be spread through kissing. >> it may be that it's present in saliva, is it impossible someone would get infected that way, i don't know. >> the cdc is making and distributing test kits but there won't be enough. women should be tested for zika right away if they have been in affected countries or areas and are experiencing symptoms like rashes, red eyes or a fever. erica edwards, "nbc 10 news." if you are noticing a lot of people wearing red today it's not the valentine's day has come early. not that. guys are saying gosh, did i forget the flowers. it's a matter of the heart. >> the american heart association declared today

in philadelphia, 40 in trenton, so the areas where we have the snow cover where we did see that fall, we have a lot of puddles on the roadway, a lot of wed roads and sidewalks so anything untreated tonight could freeze over. so we are seeing temperatures dropping below that freezing point. cameras shaky. look what the temperatures going to do once the wind dies down dropping to around freezing by 10:00 in the philadelphia area, below freezing by early tomorrow morning. so this is why the icy spots are going to be a concern. remember that before you head out tomorrow or even late tonight. winds are still sustained from 15 to 20 miles an hour gusting higher closer to 25 and 30 in some areas so it's windy but the winds will die down and that will allow the temperatures to drop later on tonight. the snow is up in new england, boston about to see the end of this snow. up in maine that system is moving away. we are nice and dry. we're going to stay dry for the weekend. an area of high pressure is going to keep us dry for saturday and sunday.

so good news if you have any plans. here is a look at the weekend forecast, saturday mix of sun and clouds, mid-40s, milder 48 degrees, so the weekend looks good, no concerns over the weekend. but we have concerns as we go into next week. so look at future weather here. this is one computer model we're watching, monday one storm system, does look to stay offshore. we're going to have to watch this but it looks to stay away. into tuesday we're going to have two weather systems we're watching. we're going to be in between the two so we could see effects of both of them, one offshore and one a clipper system moving in but we do expect snow at least part of the day on tuesday as of now some of that could linger into early wednesday. after that it does look to be fairly dry. of course we'll be updating that as we go through the weekend. mostly clear and cold, icy spots late tonight, 28 for the low in philadelphia, 22 areas north and west so temperatures will be dropping below freezing again, sun and clouds tomorrow, 43 to 46 degrees. pretty nice day. and really, a pretty nice

right now at 4:30 a new purpose for all those leaves we bag up in the fall. people in one south jersey shore town say leaves could be the life line they need to protect the coastline. local leaders in little egg harbor say heavy bales of leaves blocked the storm surge in the nor'easter. >> a new jersey company is behind these recycled coastal barriers. ted greenberg explains how it works. >> they are about i guess 4 or 5 feet high. >> reporter: ed was skeptical these bales of composted leaves would be able to hold back the water but quickly saw they indeed had muscle. >> i was not sure they would work or provide much but it's amazing what they did cu.

>> reporter: more than 60 leaf bales were put up as barriers in three flood prone spots in little egg harbor township which is still recovering from hurricane sandy. >> this is the first for anybody. >> reporter: officials say the bales stood up to pounding waves and protected areas at risk of being washed out. saving the township upwards of $10,000 in repairs. >> tremendous benefit to have something like this. >> i think that this is absolutely going to be the next big thing for shore protection. >> reporter: the bales are packed tightly and bound with strong cable, each weighs roughly 3,000 pounds. >> they did not move an inch. those things are going to be able to protect very, very vulnerable areas to any community. >> they are the creation of nature's choice corporation, which provided them free of charge to the township as an experiment of sorts. >> it was spectacular success i

the area. here's the snow coverage now. very different than what we had 24 hours ago. it was north and west but now we're seeing some snow cover in new jersey and delaware. a lot of this has started to melt today. but that's going to be the issue tonight. a lot of the snow that fell is melting so some of that will be freezing tonight on untreated surfaces, once those temperatures drop down below freezing. right now we're well above freezing, temperatures in about the low 40s through most of the area. but these numbers will be dropping, that's when we see issues on untreated surfaces. the snow is moving into new england. we're dry, we're going to stay that way through the weekend so that is good news. take a look at what's going to happen with our temperatures. it is going to get colder. the wind is going to diminish. what a difference a few hours makes from the snow this morning to sunshine across the area. but temperatures will be dipping into the 30s, by 10, 11:00 tonight, even midnight, there you see it, temperatures starting to dip below freezing,

when right there, it toppled opt the street. one person was killed. three were injured. >> the search for a so-called bonnie and clyde couple suspected in a crime spree has ended in a deadly shoot-out. blake fitzgerald was killed. his girlfriend is wounded. fitzgerald used his girlfriend as a shield in the shootout. police linked the pair to a series of crimes in alabama and georgia, the crimes fate pattern. people robbed, kidnapped and then let go unharmed. usually after their car was stolen. police spotted the couple early this morning. and bullets started flying after the two were pulled over in a stolen truck. no officers were hurt. >> here's an armed robbery like you have never seen. the robber is 8 years old. secure video shows him right here walking into a convenient store in florida. he is wearing a motorcycle helmet. and he's carrying handgun. a clerk eventually is able to grab the boy if you wonder how

he got the gun he took it from his mother. they are still investigating. >> a drone hits the empire state building and now a new jersey man is in trouble with the law. police tell us shawn riddle lost control of his drone and it crashed into the 40th floor of the skyscraper. then crashed to a 35th floor landing. riddle went into the building and asked if he could get his drone back. the guards, they called police. investigators don't believe the crash was intentional but he is charged with reckless endangerment. >> mcdonald's is sued for deception. >> the menu item a customer says doesn't come as advertised. plus, the new study that is perhaps the silver lining to the eagles not making it to the super bowl. why doctors say the flu is worse in winning cities.

mcdonald's is facing a class action lawsuit for selling deceptive mozzarella sticks. it claims that they falsely advertise the appetizer. instead of using 100% real cheese it allegedly used starch as a cheap substitute and filler. the suit comes after complaints that the sticks did not have any cheese at all. >> if you'll be attending a super bowl party this weekend you may want to think before you high five fellow fans. we'll tell you why. it's because it's flu season. and that sickness can spread quickly in social gatherings. broncos and panthers fans could be at a higher risk. data shows cities with a team in the super bowl had an 18% spike in flu-related deaths for people over 65. so would you rather have an incredible car or boat? jim, sheena? >> car. >> boat. >> me toxt i'm with you. boat. we could have a big party and invite everyone. you can look in awe at both cars

especially if you are around the philadelphia area with untreated surfaces, north and west, even in parts of new jersey and delaware. the weekend is going to be different. so going into tomorrow morning it's going to be cold but through the afternoon pretty nice both saturday and sunday. we go into next week and tracking more snow. so winter is returning next week. live look at center city, the clouds are really starting to clear out and we'll keep seeing that overnight. right now in philadelphia, 42 degrees, winds are sustained at 17 miles an hour, so it is windy outside. but those winds will start to lighten up overnight. 39 allentown, also pottstown, 40 degrees in reading, 42 in philadelphia, so if you're heading out keep in mind these will be dropping below freezing so you do want to have the jacket with you, the heavier jacket probably. 39 now in millville and dover and these are the areas where we did see the wet snow this morning so also the areas where we could see icing. here is a look at some of the totals. newtown, pennsylvania, 3.2 inches, mount laurel in new jersey same thing, seaville, new

jersey, 3 inches, hammonton, 2.8. delaware we saw around 2 inches for most of the area. most of the counties in delaware, and around the philadelphia area, almost about an inch and a half. so at least a good coating of wet snow a lot of which is starting to melt. the weather system is now in new england, we don't have to worry about it. high pressure is setting up and we stay dry as we go into the weekend so. here's future weather shows, we stay dry, tomorrow for saturday, nice and dry. more sunshine. sunday looks really good, even milder as we go into sunday. then we have a weather system offshore, this is monday, now it is going to stay pretty far offshore. we'll have to watch to see if it swings in moisture. there is a chance we could see precip but another model is actually keeping it a little farther offshore monday to where we don't get much. until late monday and into tuesday. tuesday we could be between two weather systems, that would bring part of the area some snow. maybe a bit of a wintry mix too. so that would be the tuesday time frame. we expect snow maybe that wintry

mix, we'll have to watch the temperatures because it's not just one weather system that will be doing this, it's actually a combination of two in some parts of the area. so we'll have more updates over the weekend on that. just keep in mind winter is not over. tonight, mostly clear and cold, icy spots, late tonight temperatures dropping into about the low 20s north and west, upper 20s philadelphia. tomorrow a mix of sun and clouds, 43 to 46, so the weekend actually looks good, near 50 on sunday, the snow returns tuesday, there is a chance we could see monday, but tuesday the chance for snow mix is going to be pretty high. temperatures dropping into the 30s. having an elderly parent comes with the worry of what happens if they fall? >> it's a fear many children have, but one hospital is working to ease those concerns. next, the program that helps seniors find their balance as we get a simulated look at the damage done when a person falls.

1700 seniors who fall. about 60 die each year. it helps seniors recover, they are working to treat and prevent falls. this room with lots of medical stuff and realistic robot patient is part of the hospital's virtual education and simulation training center. >> there can be a sudden jarring movement of the head. >> here they train doctors how the deal with patients who had a fall. >> this could be fall in your house, because of problems with balance, or problems with mobility, fall in the bathroom, coming going up and down stairs. >> they also teach doctors what internal fall after effects to look for. seniors on blood thinner at a higher risk for internal breeding. they are also working on prevention going to seniors and families talking about ways to prevent falls where they happen whether on wet or snowy sidewalks or in the home. >> perhaps considering more of a first floor setup, having more
