moments as firefighters tried to save him. >> shouts of we need a ladder, where's the kid, and then neighbors pointing saying that room right there. but the young boy inside that room didn't survive. family members tell us he ran back into the home because he mistakenly thought his father was still inside. andrea cruz with our spanish language station has been at the scene of this deadly fire all day long. what have you learned about the victim? >> reporter: he is according to family members the boy was active in school, played football, he was part of different organizations, above all he was very close to his entire family and those who knew him say that they are not surprised that he ran back into this burning home with the intention of rescuing his

father. >> he died trying to save his father's life. >> sheila tells us her grandson got out safely but ran back into his burning house to help his father who was recovering from surgery. but the boy everyone called man man did not make it out. >> aggressive attack, they were five family members in the home at the time of the fire. >> the boy's father has severe injuries including a broken back, sanford's sister, brother and mother got out safely. >> she's devastated. >> a nearby store employee says the family was often together. >> the whole family just a nice knit family you know what i mean. >> today sanford's school said in a posting that counselors would be available at the school tomorrow to speak with those affected by this tragedy. >> he was a hero. he was active in school, at the

pal, in this community. >> according to the red cross, two different families were affected by this fire, they are all being helped with spiritual counseling and shelter. we're told the family will be spending the night in a hotel. andrea cruz, "nbc 10 news." >> to this now, an elderly woman is dead, her husband seriously hurt after a tree crashed through their roof and into their bedroom as they slept. it took crews about 70 minutes to rescue the guy from the home in broomall delaware county. investigators say the tree could have fallen at 6:30 this morning but it wasn't until 8:00 when someone heard the man calling for help. >> i saw a tree in a back bedroom and two people trapped in the bed. there was a male in that bed, he spoke to me, i came back out and started to set things up. get me the hell out of here.

>> investigators don't believe the weather played a part in bringing the tree down. tragedy in new york city today. this massive crane toppled onto a street with deadly results, one person was killed as a result of this right here, three others were injured and the collapse was caught on camera. >> it's moving fast now, dropping it really quick. whoa. looks like it's going to blop blop holy [ bleep ] >> falling. oh, it broke. holy cow. >> the video was shot by an electrician in a building. this happened in lower manhattan. the crane stretches more than 15 stories high. after the crane landed it smashed into several buildings on the way down, eventually landed on several parked cars. crews on the ground showed us

the scene. a man who had just stepped out of one of the parked cars was killed. three other people hurt. two in serious condition, the other had minor injuries. people nearby talked about the violent sounds they heard. >> probably about 8:15, 8:20 there was an enormous bang, the loudest ever and the whole building felt like the earth shook and moved. i thought immediately i looked out the window to freedom tower. i thought that god forbid it was being attacked. >> i heard commotion. my co-worker, he said he felt the ground trembling. basically, then i felt it too like a couple seconds later. he told me to look out the window and then i seen the ladder portion of the crane falling. i heard a lot of commotion, i heard the actual crane hitting the cars you know, the metal on mettle clashing. it was a whole bunch of commotion. people screaming. >> a wide area is blocked off tonight as investigators try to

figure out what caused the crane to fall. the man who was killed today was born in prague and immigrated to the u.s. as a teen, graduated from harvard university and worked at a computerized financial trading firm in new york city. talk about the weather now. our first alert weather. what a difference a few hours can make each after a winter storm. our live camera over i-95 at south philly captured these two scenes just eight hours apart. the ground outside your home might look clear but it was a different story earlier this morning. look at the amount of snow on the ventnor board walk. the beach looked like a winter wonder land than the sand we're usually expecting to see there. a fresh coating of snow in parts of delaware county. this is a scene in haverford. the snow stuck to more than just the grassy areas here. nbc 10's drew smith was driving through different parts of the region as the snow was coming down.

>> reporter: it was an early wake-up call for these utility crews in symrna, delaware. suiting up and fixing lines coated with snow and ice which cut off power to part of the town. for some drivers there was more snow on top of their cars than on the road. >> slushy is going to be slippery so it's not that bad where you can't get to point a to point b. >> we drove from delaware to south jersey, trucks, treated the travel lanes but the snow built up along the shoulder. in millville drivers had to deal with a slushy mess. there was another hazard by the way it stuck to the signs and the traffic lights. >> a little slushy, a little bit annoying but it's kind of fun too. >> reporter: some businesses managed to open up on time. even the delivery trucks were out. maria jones made it to the post office. she actually enjoyed today's weather. >> as long as it's not 24 inches kind of thing and hopefully it

will melt by next week like that other snow we had. >> reporter: in some places this snow didn't require the big snow plows. this guy used a small tractor to get the job done. and people said the shoveling wasn't too bad either. >> a little bit for five minutes as opposed to the last one, 14 inches. >> reporter: when the skies cleared later in the day those who waited to shovel got an assist from the sun melting away some of the snow and slush. let's check in now with nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. a lot of that snow melted as drew mentioned. now there is a chance of icing over. >> that's right. temperatures will be dropping below freezing so something we'll be watching closely, you should be careful about on untreated surfaces that are wet or puddles really. here is a look at the snow cover because of this morning's snowfall. south jersey and delaware seeing a light coating of snow. stretching into the lehigh valley. a lot of that is melting but again, those untreated wet

surfaces will be turning icy. temperatures are still well above freezing but now dropping into the upper 30s for millville, wildwood, atlantic city. 42 in philadelphia, upper 30s through much of the lehigh valley. the storm system has moved away. we are nice and dry but the snow is now in new england, boston about to get rid of that snowfall and as we go into the weekend a lot of dry air in the forecast so a nice dry weekend. for tonight, though, we will stay dry but colder by 7:00 p.m. around 37 degrees, still windy, too, it's windy now but then overnight the winds start to diminish and that's going to allow temperatures to drop more. by early tomorrow morning below freezing, icy spots, be careful as you are walking around or driving in the morning hours. coming up i'll show you the rest of the weekend forecast and our next chance of snow next week. >> we have new information on this police chase and crash captured exclusively by sky force 10. authorities say the suspect robbed a cell phone store in south philly, then police used

those stolen cell phones to track him down and as you can see there, corner him in a cul-de-sac in delaware. nbc 10's jacqueline london is live in the operations center. what have we learned? >> pennsylvania police say henry davis is under guard after breaking his arm during that crash last night. davis is charged with fleeing police, recklessly endangering another person, and several vehicle code violations, only sky force 10 was fast enough to capture the 100-mile-per-hour, 26-mile chase. police say davis led them on i-76, then i-95. the crash ended in a quiet neighborhood in north wilmington when the suspect crashed into a small creek. authorities pulled davis from the suv and moved him onto a stretcher. investigators tell us this started when davis rob add verizon store on south christopher columbus boulevard in south philly. we're told davis stole cell phones, tied up store employees,

one of the employees tells us the suspect hit him in his head and hit his co-worker with the door of a safe. >> hitting so hard with that safe and he passed out. i saw he was red faced and passed out. he pushed my head again, hit me with something. when he was going he told me okay if you follow me i'm going to kill you. >> police used tracking software in the stolen cell phones to find davis and with the chase so long police agencies from philadelphia, new castle county and pennsylvania state police were all involved. no officers were injured. >> thank you. families in montgomery county have questions today after several cases of whooping cough in their children's school. tonight we asked health officials why students who got the vaccine are still getting sick. plus this. >> nbc 10 told you about the so-called fight week at one high school.

now leaders are trying to stop students at another school from continuing this violent trend. and no kissing. why health officials have made this part of their new warning to ward off the zika virus.

>> a local principal is warning residents after social media

buzz recording a school brawl week. in a letter the principal says social media messages claim there will be fights at the school starting monday. she says it appears to be modeled after event it at abington high. five fights at abington in the past few days, videos are posted on line with the hash tag abington fight week. there is increased security. the students could be expelled and charged. >> staying in montgomery county now, three elementary school students have whooping cough. that's according to the county health department. the students were in fourth grade at colonial elementary school. the district tells nbc 10 it's called and e-mailed parents to inform them. health officials say all three students have been vaccinated for whooping cough but that doesn't mean the vaccine isn't working. >> all three of these children, because they had their full

immunizations due to date had mild to moderate illness. that means that the vaccine is actually doing its job. >> the health department says children who get the illness can usually go back to school after five days of antibiotics. montgomery county had seven reported cases of whooping cough so far this year. >> pregnant women should think twice before kissing someone especially a stranger. that's the new warning from brazilian health officials. right now brazil is celebrating carnaval where many kiss strangers. health officials say the discovery of active zika virus in saliva calls for precautions, they recommend pregnant women avoid sharing cutlery, glasses and plates with people who have symptoms. the virus is suspected of causing severe birth defects. the centers for disease control also issued new guidelines regarding zika that target pregnant women and their partners. pregnant women whose partners

traveled to where the virus is spreading should not have sex or use condoms, they should do this until the man tests negative for zika or the woman delivers her baby. the virus is mainly spread through mosquitoes but officials have confirmed a rare case where it spread through sexual contact. sky force 10 is over breaking news in montgomery county, crews are on the scene of a fire at a chemical and technology company in upper merion. the name is johnson nasay. the fire crews down there, police also right outside of the building. if we can zoom out to show what we're talking about. we'll continue to monitor this situation again there was a fire at a chemical company here, this is upper merion township. as soon as we know more we'll bring it to you. to our coverage of decision

2016. donald trump may have finished second in iowa but is leading in new hampshire according to a new nbc "wall street journal" maris poll. he gets the support of 30% of like lie voters, marco rubio is gaining with 17%, followed by iowa caucus winner ted cruz at 15%. on the democratic side gender is a major issue after it was raised by hillary clinton. a state most democratic women say they support bernie sanders. steve handelsman has the latest on the race in new hampshire. >> everyone of the women on this stage i admire. >> reporter: hillary clinton presented herself with prominent women who support her but more new hampshire women back bernie sanders in the latest poll. at last night's debate, she made gender an issue.

his mother come in. tough and beloved, former first lady barbara bush is a role model to some new hampshire women. donald trump from flying back but most of the republicans are spending their time now preparing for their debate tomorrow night. from manchester, steve handelsman, nbc news. well, a busy morning in south jersey. nbc 10 in pleasantville where crews were clearing the snow in the parking lot, it was coming down at a good clip. this is wet snow. if uf saw it this morning you know how wet it was. the good news is a lot is melting and now our concern to the overnight with temperatures dropping below freezing. we could see icy spots into the early morning hours tomorrow. so be careful of that. the weekend looks nice, saturday

and sunday, nice and dry, but next week winter comes back. we're tracking more snow in the forecast. temperatures now above freezing, upper 30s, 38 pottstown, 42 philadelphia and still windy outside so making it feel colder, but we're still above freezing in the areas that we saw snow this morning for south jersey and delaware. tonight the numbers will be dropping so if you have friday night plans grab the thicker jacket. we'll be dropping below freezing by about 11:00 p.m. and by the time you wake up tomorrow morning, if it's around 6, 7:00 expect temperatures right around 31 degrees, so we'll have icy spots out there. here is a look at satellite and radar. the show is off in parts of new england, boston getting that snow but starting to leave. we, though, are nice and dry at the moment. high pressure is going to keep us dry all the way through the weekend. so, if you are heading out this weekend we'll see temperatures in the 40s, pretty nice for saturday, a mix of sun and clouds, mid-40s sunday, miler near 50 degrees, and then we go

into next week and we'll be watching a couple weather systems, here is monday, 9:00, big area of low pressure offshore and this model pretty much keeps it offshore some are trying to bring a little bit of the moisture inland not much though but then by tuesday we're going to be in between two other weather systems. so we have this clipper system moving in from the west, area of low pressure developing offshore. we'll be watching this through the day because we do expect snow on tuesday from it. and then as we go into wednesday that starts to move away from the area. so, this weekend of course we'll be having more updates on this as we go into next week. tonight clear and cold, icy spots forming, 28 for the low in philadelphia, 22 north and west. tomorrow a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures 43 to 46 degrees so i would say really nice weekend, we go into sunday. 48 degrees, milder the chance of snow comes in monday but it depends how close that first weather system gets, then we go into tuesday watching for the chance of snow and a mix across the area, that's likely too.

temperatures will only be topping out around 37 degrees tuesday and wednesday. but look at thursday, the coldest day of the week, 33 for a high temperature, morning lows around 20 degrees, so winter is back in the seven-day forecast, we'll take a closer look at that coming up. >> looking forward to that. meantime, atlantic city says it's a decision that could leave them bankrupt. we'll explain why the city now has a $62 million bill that it can't pay. >> three, two, one. >> plus, drivers will soon have to pay more to get through part of delaware. where the state is putting a new toll road and how much it will cost you.

it could force atlantic city into bankruptcy in weeks. a court ruled that the city must pay the casino more than $62 million in tax refund. the judge barred the casino from taking any of the city assets for at least 45 days, that allows for settlement talks. while waiting the borgata says it will stop making current tax payments. the mayor says the question is how does the city pay the money back? atlantic city is grappling with severe budget problems caused by years of decline in the casino industry. state officials accuse decades of overspending and poor

drivers will soon need extra dollars. the state broke ground on a new toll road. some may not like the extra cost, one town says it will save them a lot of headaches. tim furlong joins us live in middletown. tell us about this. >> reporter: they have been talking about this for years, lots of debate where this road is going to go, how close to neighborhoods but you see the equipment is now in place, construction on the 301 middletown toll road is officially a go. it took a couple decades to get

here but today ground is officially broken on a toll road that will take traffic around middletown instead of through it. the $470 million project is expected to pump over $700 million in the delaware economy. you can see the highway will run between route 1 and the maryland border southwest of middletown. four on and off points will help companies get trucks and employees in and out of the area more efficiently and speed up the access to and from i-95. >> all of the companies we're talking to look at that thing. that's what they want to know. travel for employees. >> middletown's population is booming, new shopping popping up, traffic has gotten pretty bad especially through the charming down town even for big trucks passing through main street is the primary way to get to and from delaware route 1. >> i try to avoid main street. i try to take the back roads over to work. >> at half baked they tell you they won't miss the trucks but

aren't sure how they feel about the toll road letting more drivers avoid the down town. >> i think it's kind of both to be honest. it's a good did thing because we have a lot of issues with parking but it's bad because i think a lot of people will not be riding through town that we'd normally have. kind of seeing us. >> reporter: i can tell you the road is set to open in 2018. it's going to cost $4 end to end but save you a lot of time compared to the current way right through middletown. it's designed to keep the truck traffic out. this road is also going to create a lot of construction jobs and state leaders say this could lure more companies here with this improved access to the highways. tim furlong, "nbc 10 news." this morning was the first alert weather day for people down the shore. snow created work for city crews in south jersey and nbc 10 in atlantic city, the shoveling this go around wasn't nearly as bad as the blizzard of 2016. in burlington county salt trucks

did what they could. it was kind of an uphill battle. the salt didn't help much. in philadelphia the snow meant you needed a little extra time for the ride to work in the morning. nbc 10 in havertown, the roads weren't bad but cars had to be cleaned off. let's talk to sheena parveen. a lot of that snow has melted but that means potential icing. >> temperatures will be dropping below freezing as we go through tonight. now the weather system is far away now up in new england and eventually it will be moving away from there. but we're nice and dry. however, our temperatures this afternoon have been above freezing, look at this snow cover, now the entire area at least saw some snow. at least most of the area i should say for new jersey and delaware, especially, so the the untreated wet surfaces will be turning icy with temperatures dropping down. right now we're above freezing so even melting can be

occurring. 42 philadelphia, 40 northeast philly, 38 allentown. 39 millville and wildwood. but these numbers are going to be dropping like i mentioned in about the low 30s for much of the area, low 20s, areas north and west so if you're heading out tonight take the heavy coat if you have late night plans. future weather here with temperatures we're going to be dropping down in the low 30s, below freezing by about 11:00 p.m. and midnight. 1:00 in the morning, so i think we'll see some icy spots through the overnight hours, remember untreated surfaces will be icy. into the weekend looking pretty good, and we have another round of snow coming as we go into next week. i'll show you the timing coming up. $thank you. a philadelphia man gets more than 30 years behind bars for the kidnapping and torture of a jewelry store worker in center city. he and two others approached the woman. he used a stun gun on her, bound her and dumped her in a cemetery. police say he planned the

philadelphia rapper meek mill avoided jail time after violating parole. a judge sentenced him to 90 days house arrest after ruling he violated his probation for a drug and gun possession conviction. this is video of meek mill speaking to students at southwest philadelphia yesterday. he says he was on tour and his concert schedule was the reason he violated his probation. but prosecutors say the violations include unapproved trips to join his girlfriend and fellow entertainer nicki minaj in other cities. she was at today's sentencing

hearing. >> chaka fattah jr. is officially appealing his fraud decision. it comes three days after a judge sentenced fattah jr. to 5 years in prison. he was immediately taken into custody. fattah jr. was convicted on bank and fraud charges. he is the son of u.s. congressman chaka fattah married to "nbc 10 news" anchor renee chenault-fattah. she is currently on leave from the station. well, coming up the snow that fell this morning may be freezing over. it's melted for most of the area. the weekend looks pretty good. then a chance of snow next week. i'll show you those details and timing. >> community outrage after a local amusement park worker is fired after more than a decade. tonight, a park's vice president responds to the criticism.

twitter is taking on terrorism. today the company announced it's now using spam fighting technology to seek out accounts that could be promoting terrorism. twit sers it's suspended 125,000 accounts in the last eight months for threatening or promoting terrorist attacks. mainly related to isis. twitter's actions follow a controversy over the role in social media in the san bernardino attack. the fbi says the isis inspired couple responsible sent pro jihad messages on social media. 14 people were killed in december's attack. many actors and actresses spoke out against gun control after those shootings in san bernardino but many of those same celebrities are still

making a lot of money from violent entertainment. reporter jenna susko takes a look. >> horrifying scenes not much different than the ones at column bine or sandy hook, even the auer theater shooting. brought to the big screen. but after two massacres in hollywood's back yard. celebrities are calling for change. >> i have to just choose movies i mean that aren't violent. >> does hollywood have responsibility? >> what they are producing is not real but the emotion that it creates is real. >> it's time for our leaders to act. >> as anything in the entertainment industry really changing. >> it's a blatant double standard. >> a month after the san bernardino massacre more than 100 celebrities signed this letter to president obama saying we've had enough of seeing unthinkable tragedies happen but tim winter of the television council sees a problem. 75% of the actors signing that list have taken roles in films

depicting or glorifying gun violence. >> hollywood is addicted to gun violence because it's lucrative. >> winter says hollywood can be a powerful tool for social change, he says that proves the entertainment industry can change attitudes about gun violence too. he doesn't think that's happening. with several nominated for oscars. >> only becoming more frequent and more explosive. >> a study found gun violence in the movies has more than tripled since 1950. gun control advocate donna finkelstein isn't convinced that has impact on gun deaths. >> i don't hear a sense of connection between the media and glorification of guns. >> it's enough of a concern that president obama signed an executive action in 2013 directing the cdc to investigate the relationship between media images and violence. what about the celebrities signing that recent letter to the president.

actor liam neeson shoots dozens of people. we counted 20 films where he brandishes a gun. jessica alba signed the letter, also will ferrell. >> how many more. >> he appeared in this psa, demanding gun laws along side jamie foxx. who after this psa signed on to star in jengo and chains. and edward norton store of american history s and fight club. >> one of entertainment's powerful voices acknowledged the issue in 2014. >> i can't make one movie and say this is what i want for my kids and go out. >> since that interview he has backed a sequel and the hateful 8. >> i don't feel that the responsibility is not within the entertainment industry. and the problem is easy access to guns. >> tim winter hopes some celebrities who signed the list will pledge to stop taking such violent roles. >> you can't celebrate the good that you do without also being held accountable for the harm

that you do. >> the nra did not respond to our request. we reached out to all of the actors we named as well as the directors guild and the screen actors guild. not one of them would comment. >> to this now for the first time apple is accepting banged up iphones as trade-ins for upgrades. until now credit was only given to iphone owners if the device's screen was intact and the buttons worked. they hope more people being encouraged to upgrade to a new phone. the deal only applies to the iphone 5s and later models. well, some delays but no cancellations because of the snow in mays landing. despite the snow the roads were wet but clear for the most part. so i'm sure the kids were probably disappointed that the snow is falling and they still had to go to school.

but the good news is it didn't cause major problems. the wet snow has melted through much of the area. not everybody but tonight the areas that did see the snow melt will be going below freezing so icy spots will be a concern overnight. the weekend looks good, i think you're going to like saturday and sunday, but then we go into next week and winter's going to make a return. we're tracking snow. clouds are clearing up over center city. 42 the temperature, above freezing across the area. so we could still see some of the snow melting. the wind is up, sustained at 21 miles an hour. it's going to stay windy the rest of the efrpg, then diminishing. in the upper 30s, low 40s across much of i-95 so bensalem, wilmington, around 40, 41 degrees right now in dover. so once that wind does diminish these numbers will be dropping. with that snow we had around today, again that's going to cause some of this to freeze over on untreated surfaces. totals across the area, newtown,

pennsylvania 3.2, mount laurel, philadelphia area got about 1.5 in spots. but the snow is far away now about to move out of new england, we are dry and we're going to stay dry as we go into the weekend. big area of high pressure setting up that's going to give us more sunshine come saturday and sunday. so take a look at future weather here. tonight is going to be dry, tomorrow dry, here is your saturday. going into sunday. more sunshine. but then you start to notice a weather system to our south. that's going to move up to the north but it's going to stay offshore. all the models show this off shore but this particular model trying to swing in a little bit of light precip. we'll have to watch that. if it did it would be just rain snow mix. but the real thing wouldn't get here until about tuesday. here's what the next model shows. this weather system offshore. doesn't swing in much moisture. by tuesday we'll be between two other systems, one area of low pressure forming offshore and the other one kind of a clipper

system off to our west. so with those two we could see snow on tuesday. and then a lot of that should be leaving the area as we go into wednesday. so winter is returning in the forecast as we go into next week. tonight though, mostly clear and cold, icy spots forming, 28 for the low in philadelphia. 22 degrees areas north and west. tomorrow nice day sun and clouds, 43 to 46 degrees, and your entire weekend really is going to be nice. by sunday, 48 degrees, and sunny. milder, then we go into next week and we're looking at the chance for snow on monday. that would be later chance possibly, we'll watch that closely and then for tuesday there you see the chance for snow and a mix, so we do expect that across the area. we'll have more updates as we go across the weekend. high temperatures in the 30s, tuesday and wednesday, 33 for the high on thursday, morning lows around 20. >> going to be cold. thank you. let's turn to lester holt. he joins wisconsin a look what's coming up on nightly news. good evening.

continuing our 2016 decision coverage, candidates for president have been hitting the campaign trail in new hampshire trying to convince undecided voters. this is a live picture, jeb bush is at a campaign event in concord. you can tell he is addressing the crowd right now. he has been joined in new hampshire by his mother who has also spoken at restaurants, at some of the constituents out there. former first lady barbara bush making an appearance. george spencer will follow the candidates' last minute push to the new hampshire primary. look for his live reports

starting sunday night only on nbc 10. >> online security is a big concern for many. we try to protect pass woords. a man is raising questions about a popular website. linda investigates. >> reporter: this is where you'll usually find brian mortonson handling servers at the health care company where he works. when not on duty he checks out the borgata website. >> i don't gamble much. it's once in a while thing. they give you free money and you go in and get the money, that's how we found out about this. >> reporter: in january there was a give away where both he and his wife each have an account, both with the same pass word. when he logged on to his account he got a message asking him to change his pass ward because it was the same as another holder. >> it was immediately shocking they know my pass word or they are storing it somehow and comparing it in what i think is

an insecure manner. you shouldn't store pass words. with the number of data bases stolen there isn't a needed to store. >> he tried to contact borgata. he explained why he is so concerned about pass word security. >> there really are no standards put in place which there should be. i'm hoping that the casino takes a kind suggestion and not a criticism and maybe changes the way that they do it to make it more secure for everyone involved. >> that was linda reporting. we contacted the borgata hotel casino and spa in atlantic city. they explained that quote our technology does secure pass words using hash encryption that renders the pass word unreadable and unable to be reverse engineered. they assured us that no employee is able to decrypt and see any user pass word but the quote it is very important to identify individuals using the same device or ip address using different users accounts but sharing pass words, while not

always, it could identify collusion in that household. end quote. they are not saying that's the case here. but that's why his account raised a red flag. brian says he won't cancel his account and he is happy to learn more about the site's safety measures. i'm jacqueline london. >> i'm jim rosenfield. the couple was sleeping when the tree crashed. freeing the couple was delicate work. they were able to rescue the husband but his wife did not survive. >> reporter: when you look at this house at the bottom of a hill at the end of a cul-de-sac, the damage not visible when you look head on. it took a neighbor who heard the screams and saw what happened in the back there, to call for help. >> when i went inside to do my size up i saw a tree in a back bedroom and two people trapped in the bed. there was a male in that bed, spoke to me. >> what did he say? >> get me the hell out of here. >> reporter: that's what firefighters did. several of them. the fire department. they crawled on the floor, they used saws to remove the branches and free the elderly man, who police say had been screaming for help for nearly two hours.

>> i think they were asleep. and yeah, it's a freak accident. >> the man was taken to the hospital, his wife didn't survive. >> i'm still in shock to tell you the truth. >> reporter: those who live here say they are used to dealing with tall trees. they are everywhere but they have never seen anything like this. >> we have branches here when the wind has been bad but nothing like that. but it is freaky. really freaky. >> reporter: this whole neighborhood is surrounded by trees just like these. rescuers say they can't be sure what it was that made the tree fall, they say they can't blame it on the weather at this point. they say it is a sad but freak accident. a teenage boy thought his father was trapped in a burning home. the decision to rush back in to the flames cost him his life. keith jones is here with more. >> cell phone video captured the moments as firefighters tried to
