>> i think they were asleep. and yeah, it's a freak accident. >> the man was taken to the hospital, his wife didn't survive. >> i'm still in shock to tell you the truth. >> reporter: those who live here say they are used to dealing with tall trees. they are everywhere but they have never seen anything like this. >> we have branches here when the wind has been bad but nothing like that. but it is freaky. really freaky. >> reporter: this whole neighborhood is surrounded by trees just like these. rescuers say they can't be sure what it was that made the tree fall, they say they can't blame it on the weather at this point. they say it is a sad but freak accident. a teenage boy thought his father was trapped in a burning home. the decision to rush back in to the flames cost him his life. keith jones is here with more. >> cell phone video captured the moments as firefighters tried to save him.

family and friends remembering 12-year-old stanford harling iii as a hero. officials say there were five family members inside the home on markley street. this is that cell phone video. he ran back in to help his father recovering from surgery. he didn't make it out. what harling didn't know is that his father had already jumped from a window. those who knew the boy weren't surprised that he ran back inside to save his dad. >> the whole family just a nice knit family, you know what i mean. >> he was a hero. he was active in school, in this community. >> family members tell us harling's father has severe injuries including a broken back. the sister, brother and mother got out safely. keith jones, "nbc 10 news." to our weather now.

the snow is starting to melt from this morning's rush hour storm. south jersey and the shore got hit the hardest. drivers had a tough time in burlington county before the sun came up. here's what it was like in mays landing. buses to drop kids off. plenty of salt trucks out this morning. the snow stopped around lunch time. >> not as much snow on the pennsylvania side. a look in jenkintown. there is barely any snow even on the sidewalks there. in delaware, check out this guy with a tracker. he was cleaning the walkway in symrna. maybe had to pull out the scrapers before heading to work. >> now a friday night freeze. >> sheena parveen with her forecast. >> yeah, it's going to be colder for much of the area with the temperatures dropping and the clear skies and the light winds we'll be seeing what fell today. this morning the snow freezing as we go overnight. so this is the snow cover from today. mostly light, light coating through the area right now.

but new jersey and delaware now have it and as we go through tonight anything that melts on untreated surfaces will become icy, temperatures will be dropping below freezing. we're still above freezing but the numbers are starting to drop. 36 allentown, pottstown and reading, 41 in philadelphia, 37 millville and atlantic city, 37 in wilmington, so keep this in mind as we go into early tomorrow morning. we do expect icy spots on those untreated surfaces. the winter storm, though, has moved away, it's moving up in new england now. and we are nice and dry. but as we go overnight again with those lighter winds, even though it's windy now the winds will diminish. the temperatures will drop. by 7:00 p.m., 37 degrees, cold and windy. once that wind starts to die down we should be around freezing by 11:00 p.m. and early tomorrow morning below freezing with the potential for those icy spots as you head outside. coming up the rest of the weekend forecast and our next chance for snow next week. new on "nbc 10 news" at 6:00, police in chester county

investigating hazing allegations. they are focusing on current and former high school football players. the east town district tells us police are looking into alleged hazing by the conestoga football team. the district says it is cooperating with police. >> school fights, in montgomery county, the principal of shelton ham high is warning parents after a social media buzz about what is called a school brawl week. in a letter the principal says social media messages claim there will be fightings starting monday. it appears to be modeled after abington high of it there have been at least five fights at abington over the past days. videos on line with the hash tag abington fight week. there is increased security and the school says the students could be expelled and charged. >> philadelphia rapper meek mill avoided jail time today, it will be house arrest for him. meek mill spoke to students in southwest philadelphia just yesterday. about two hours ago a

philadelphia judge sentenced the music star to 90 days house arrest for parole violationings. he must also do community service every day for three months. mill was on parole for a drug and gun possession conviction. he told the judge he was on tour and his concert schedule was the reason he violated his probation. prosecutors say he failed to get approval for trips with his girlfriend entertainer nicki minaj. she was in the courtroom for today's sentencing. >> tonight we have new information about the robbery at high-speed chase we brought you exclusively last night at 11:00. police say the suspect's snam henry davis iii accused of stealing cell phones, tying up workers there and leading police on a chase for more than 25 miles. sky force 10 was in the air to catch the crash landing going into a cul-de-sac into that ditch. davis is now charged with several crimes while he recovers in the hospital. store employees say they put a tracking device with the phones and that's how police tracked

him down. >> a 10-year-old boy in philadelphia managed to run away from a man who tried to grab him and pull him into a car. the special victim's unit says the boy was walking his dog wednesday morning around 8:00, in the 5300 block of north third street. a driver stopped and asked if that boy wanted candy. the driver tried to grab him by the arm. the child ran home and reported what happened. >> a pennsylvania man is behind bars accused of sending explicit images to a 14-year-old girl. they searched corey kim bell's phone. he is accused of talking to the girl using the app kik. >> police say the man in this picture shot a 7/11 store employee. video shows the man shooting the employee in the leg, then running out of the store without taking anything. it happened around 10:30. the victim is expected to be okay. atlantic city's mayor says paying the millions it owes the borgata could force the city

into ruptcy. it will stop paying taxes until the city starts forking over $62.5 million. today a judge ruled the city must pay up for the tax refunds from 2009 and 2010. >> tonight a enough way to protect beaches along the jersey shore during storms, it's something most people have in their yards, talking about leaves. local leaders in little egg harbor say heavy bales of composted leaves blocked the storm surge. could that be the answer? ted greenberg finds out. >> reporter: still couldn't move these unusual barriers. >> i was not sure they would work or provide much but it's amazing what they did during the storm. >> reporter: just before the january 23rd nor'easter more than 60 leaf bales were put up in three flood prone spots in little egg harbor township which is still recovering from

targeting pregnant women and partners, they say pregnant women whose partners travelled to the countries where the virus is spreading should either not have sex or use condoms until one of two things, the man tests negative or the woman delivers her baby. republicans are making the rounds in new hampshire and dodging snow. donald trump had to cancel one event because of the weather, another one is planned for about an hour from now. jeb bush tweeted to trump today that even his 90-year-old mother braved the elements and made it to the campaign event. also today, bush launched a new ad that touts his accomplishments versus marco rubio's. new jersey governor chris christie picked up two endorsement, charles baker and lieutenant governor were backing christie for president. the republicans will debate tomorrow night in new hampshire. >> the democrats campaign independent new hampshire following their debate last night. hillary clinton attended an event with women and bernie

fired in the lehigh valley will get his job back. he has a social media fire storm to thank. christopher emory has special needs, he worked at the park for 12 years. he was recently told he would not have a job for the spring, though. and social media lit up. 17,000 likes on facebook when a fellow employee posted that story. this morning, the vice president and general manager of the park released a statement saying once he became aware of the situation he reached out to emory and his family to offer his job back. >> good to see him smiling. an army veteran and wife, they became homeless and their worn out vehicle their only possession. >> an auto shop owner presented a restored suv to detten martin. brad takes you inside the surprise. >> congratulations. >> serious? >> i'm serious. the keys to your new car.

i'm so happy that he got it. >> it couldn't go to two nicer people. just amazing. very grateful. >> that is so nice. >> so great for the family. >> they have been so much. >> a heart-warming story on a cold night. >> that's right. and temperatures are going to get colder as we go through tonight which is going to create a little concern overnight. icy spots developing so we had the wet snow. that really melted i think for a good portion of the area today with the sunshine and the warmer temperatures. but now temperatures tonight will drop below freezing so untreated surfaces that will be a concern. through the weekend looks good, dry, temperatures comfortable. then we go into next week and winter returns, we are tracking snow in the forecast. right now we're in the mid-30s through the lehigh valley. south jersey and delaware in about the mid to upper 30s, so temperatures are starting to drop off quite a bit. especially overnight tonight with the winds dying down and the skies getting even more clear, we will see the numbers

dropping below freezing right around 10, 11:00 tonight. so around 31 degrees by the time you wake up tomorrow in the philadelphia area, but many spots could be in the upper 20s to low 20s. so again, that melted snow freezing over. the storm is all up in new england where the snow is but it's quickly starting to move out. we are dry. we're going to stay that way tonight and through the weekend, high pressure is going to help us with that. so your weekend forecast looks really good. saturday, 45, mix of sun and clouds sunday, mild e mostly sunny 48 degrees. so the weekend nice and dry. but then we go into late sunday night. we start to see this weather system approaching from the south. this one should mostly stay offshore. monday barely off shore or really far off shore the center but some of the moisture barely moving inland that would give us ploybl light precip. maybe a rain/snow mix later in the day monday especially. other models keeping it far enough off shore where it doesn't swing us that much

moisture. we'll be watching it because it could be a close call. the day we're watching is tuesday. we'll have a clipper from the west, another area of low pressure forming offshore and we expect to see some snow through the area. and some of that could be snow and wintry mix. that would be moving out as we go into wednesday. so over the weekend more updates on that. i'll keep you updated saturday into sunday. tonight mostly clear and cold. 28 for the low in philadelphia. 22 degrees areas north and west so be careful as you leave tomorrow morning. i would say around sunrise the coldest. tomorrow afternoon a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures 43 to 46 degrees. a nice start to the weekend, sunday we're near 50 and sunny, so milder, a nice end to the weekend. next week we start tracking snow. look at the temperatures, winter is returning. 37 tuesday, and wednesday, 33 on thursday, but tuesday that's the day we're really watching.

i'm john clark. just when the flyers are playing their best getting into the playoff race they lose shawn. they called up nick cousins to take his spot. he left in nashville in the second period. the flyers record is much better when he's in. they are 2-5-2 without him and 21-11-4 with him. the gm says he reaggravated an air ji but does not need surnlly. >> it's a big loss but we have other guys that are going to fill in and need to pick up the slack. no one is going to replace him. it has to be a group effort. >> he's been an impact player.

i truly believe if they can't get him help he won't live to see his 24th birthday. all of this after police reports allege he hit his ex-girlfriend. it also said his ex-girlfriend told police he told her he would kill both of them. his father says they tried to have him admitted to a psychiatric hospital but johnny refused even after his father told police he believed that johnny was suicidal. the louisville basketball program has self-imposed a one year ban from the postseason because of the prostitution scandal. remember damian lee, he played for drexel university for three years, he transferred to louisville so he could play in the postseason, he is their leading scorer. so this is a tough blow for the senior. he will never play in the postseason in his college career. i'm john clark from comcast sportsnet.
