11:01 am
first alert meteorologist bill henley is here with our friday forecast. bill. >> vai, cold this morning, but the wicked cold will be here this weekend. we've issued a first alert for saturday into sunday. near record cold temperatures sunday morning. dangerous windchills will get started on saturday and there will be more snow showers in the next 24 hours and into the weekend. the winds during the day today will be light. at 11:00 this evening they're still light, but watch what happens overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. the wind really ramps up. and it changes direction. those northwesterly winds bringing in the cold. we got a cold start saturday morning. the winds so strong during the day that's 11:00 in the morning winds of 20 miles an hour with gusts as high as 40 miles an hour. that's going to keep the lid on the temperatures through the day and actually cause them to fall during the day. this is the hour by hour forecast, 5:00 saturday afternoon 13 degrees. look at temperatures plummet into sunday morning. 5 degrees in philadelphia with windchills well below zero.
11:02 am
we could see record cold sunday morning. we'll go through it neighborhood by neighborhood when i come back later this half hour. >> all right. bill, thank you. nbc 10 skyforce 10 live over this icy mess in west philadelphia. crews had to shut off the water for about 80 homes after this water main break. it's been causing problems in this area since midnight. nbc 10's lauren mayk is live for us in west philadelphia. lauren, what can you tell us? >> reporter: vai, this was not a great day for something like this to happen because it's so cold that any water that came out here it just froze. take a look here at what happened to this street. the water that spilled from this water main break -- i'm being very careful here, but you can see this is ice. it just covered things here. we're lucky the sun is out, things are melting a little. they brought some salt in here to help it. let me tell you what's happening workers are on scene here. we're told what they believe happened was that the connection between a main and a hydrant down there that ruptured. and then it took them a while to
11:03 am
really figure it out because things kept freezing so they couldn't find where that break was. but that's where they think it happened. they are now working to replace that hydrant. but just take a look at what this caused. any water that came out here just froze. and that meant if that water ended up on your car, well, your car was trapped in ice. you can see there is one car still there. looks like nobody has worked on that one yet. and that is just a mess. that is the frustration that folks have been having this morning. take a listen to what we heard from them. >> i came in about 11:30, 12:00 last night. and it was an absolute river. had no idea what was going on. could kind of see it was a water main break. we had absolutely no water pressure. but nobody said anything. >> they better do something. they got to get this under control because they're making me lose out money.
11:04 am
and i don't have no other way to get to work. >> reporter: it took her a while, actually, to actually get all of that ice off of her car. but i can tell you it has moved now, so she was able to get to work eventually. now, vai, as you mentioned they have shut the water off for about 80 homes here while they're doing this work here today. we're told that should last about three or four hours until things can get flowing again. for now live in west philadelphia, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> lauren, thank you. west philadelphia not the only one having problems today. right now pico crews are working in the bitter cold to restore power to people in center city affected by this underground fire that happened yesterday. we just spoke with officials. they tell us 45 customers are still without service. it should be back some time this afternoon. about three dozen customers got their lelectricity back overnight. meanwhile investigators are still looking for the cause of the fire. and let's get a look now at
11:05 am
both how the underground explosion and the water main break are affecting traffic. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is following both of those situations, jesjessie. >> yeah, vai. that water main break is out in west philadelphia, 63rd street between haverford and girard avenue. now, earlier septa bus route 10 and 15 were affected by this. now it's only 15. but your best bet for an alternate is take callow hill street to make sure you're a few blocks away to avoid slippery conditions. route 15 is disrupted, 15 is not running between 60th and 63rd street because of that. that will be for the next three to four hours. and that underground transformer we were speaking of, walnut still closed between 21st street and 22nd street for those repairs. take chestnut to get by. chestnut seems to back up a bit, you can also take spruce. as for the rest of our drive
11:06 am
times for our commute here, we're doing okay pretty much back in the green just a little slow eastbound on the schuylkill into center city. commuters in philadelphia got quite the surprise this morning when someone found a snake in a trash can at septa's university city station. the snake was dead and coiled up inside a brown bag. it's not yet clear just what kind of snake it is, but animal control is out there looking into it. and breaking news from arizona this morning. a shooting at a glendale high school has prompted a lockdown and a large emergency response. two people are shot. it's not yet known if the victims are students or what condition that they are in and whether the shooter or shooters are at large is also not known right now. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you any updates as we get them. and new video now of a warehouse fire in central new jersey. firefighters in hills borough
