and by the time we get to tomorrow night believe it or not it's going to feel 20 to 30 degrees colder than it feels right now. all right. so, if you head outside, the next few hours, just imagine it 20 to 30 degrees colder than that. we've got a first alert weather day as a result of that, near-record cold coming saturday night with dangerous wind chills and wind gusts potentially as high as 50 miles an hour. in the short-term we have patchy areas of light snow approaching parts of the area. this is getting into chester county and with the temperatures the way they are any snow could stick on untreated surfaces pretty quickly. so, something going to have to look out for especially the western suburbs and in southern delaware, over the next few hours. most of the other snow would be occurring generally after midnight as you'll see on the futurecast. you can see patches of snow.

these are snow showers. not a general area of snow. not especially heavy though a little bit of a burst at 4:00 a.m. here in berks county. and some of you will wake up to a coating on the ground. you're going to wake up to really strong winds too. and the temperature if anything goes down during the day, and the wind chill definitely goes down during the day. we have a wind chill advisory in effect for the entire area until sunday at 9:00 a.m. even more serious conditions of course in the poconos. more about how cold it's going to get and for how long with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> we know kids like to spend the weekend playing outside. with this cold parents may not be as eager. >> families do have options this weekend. deanna durante joins us live in chestnut hill. a festival is happening. >> reporter: you can bet as the night goes on and people show up here to grab dinner on a friday night this is going to be a

popular place as they are walking from their car into local restaurants. we're outside the market at the fairway here in chestnut hill. this is one of the focal points for a festival this weekend where there will be ice sculptures and hot chocolate. >> linda and racy have never been here before. >> the schools are closed on fridays and mondays so you have to find something to do or your kids go nuts. so this is it. starbucks, lots of coffee. >> hi, guys. >> in search of a place to play indoors they traveled to chestnut hill. >> i could go nuts if we're in the house all day. >> the parents are in similar company, finding a place to ditch the hat and scarf. ♪ no more mofrpgys jumping on the bed ♪ >> taking advantage they escaped to the nest and holding a party for kid, the space is popular.

>> nbc 10's lauren mayk has been in the neighborhood all day. lauren, quite a sight out there. >> reporter: yes, keith and rosemary it was a mess before folks had ice all over their street and cars. there is a new positive development. just about 30 minutes ago philadelphia police came in, took down the barricades, the tape, and they opened up this street. now it has been closed all day while workers replaced a hydrant at the other end of the block. and you know, those folks, those workers, those are among the people who don't have a choice to sort of cozying up on the couch like we all want to do when it's cold. they have got to be out here. there's no way to do this job from anywhere but here. for these water department workers, the cold works against you. >> the freezing temperatures are actually icing over our valves. >> reporter: it's just downright cold to be working out here. at the auto shop down theñi strt michael quinn has one trick.

"nbc 10 news." >> and kind of smart too. thank you so much. we have new information now on a hit-and-run in chester that claimed the life of a 24-year-old woman a short time ago authorities announced that brahim scott is charged in the case, charges include homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. it happened tuesday night. police say the suspect's car had been obstructed by snow at the time. peco is working to restore power after an underground fire in center city. we first told you about this as breaking news yesterday on "nbc 10 news" at 5:00. as many as 45 customers are still without service near 21st and walnut. crews hope to have it restored

by later tonight. investigators are still looking for the cause of that fire. and check out these flames from a warehouse fire in hillsborough, new jersey. firefighters struggled for 20 hours to get it under control. fire officials blame the strong winds and frozen water lines for making it hard to put out. >> ursinus college canceled activities as students continue to get sick from a mystery stomach illness. seven more complained of vomiting and stomach pain. the total 192. classes will resume on monday. >> this afternoon, pennsylvania governor tom wolf made the stop in philadelphia as part of his schools that teach tour. the governor was greeted with a hug here in fish town. he also checked in on several classes talking with students and teachers, wolf reiterated the focus of his budget address calling for an increase in state funding for education. >> we have got to make sure that we are making -- giving the

educators in places like pen treaty all across the state the resources they need to make sure that the students who come here have the futures we need them to have. >> reporter: pennsylvania's 2015-2016 budget is now more than seven months overdo. republicans criticized wolf's visit to pennsylvania schools today, the pennsylvania gop released a statement to nbc 10, it reads in part, at a time when our schools and social services are hurting from tom wolf's vetoes, it's time for the governor to stop spending time attacking republicans and start actually leading our commonwealth. >> a vaccine for the zika virus is probably years away but tonight doctors say you could soon test yourself for the virus. that's coming up next. plus, what's wrong with this ad? one of the presidential candidates had to pull it off the air. and she beat cancer, now leah

the branches of christianity. you're looking at a live picture at the airport in havana. we learned that the pope has just boarded that flight which is on its way now to mexico. the pontiff touched down in havana this afternoon, francis and the patriarch embraced and kissed one another three times on the cheek as they met in the v.i.p. room at the havana airport. >> the popes receive gifts on visits and francis no different. look at this. wearing a sombrero on a plane on his way to cuba. the hat was a gift from a mexican journalist. >> as the zika virus spreads across latin america and the u.s. it could take two years before we see a vaccine. the assistant director general said today vaccine trials won't even begin for 18 months. the link between the virus and abnormally small heads on newborns is becoming more probable. >> current absence of

debate tomorrow in greenville. the debate comes seven days before the south carolina primary. jeb bush is hoping to follow in the foot steps of his father and brother, both former presidents, won the primary in south carolina. right now the former florida governor is growing larger than expected crowds there. during a town hall bush took a swipe at the decision-making skills of two of his republican opponents. >> what in the life experience of marco rubio or ted cruz would suggest that they could make a tough decision when the going got tough. it may be, maybe they could, it's possible. but untested people during difficult and dangerous times, it's a risk. >> bush will campaign with his brother former president george w. bush, on monday night. ted cruz's campaign has pulled an attack ad against rival marco rubio after it was revealed that the ad included a former adult film actor. the cruz campaign released a statement to nbc news saying

near record cold there and in other parts of our area this weekend, dangerous wind chills on top of that. we've been this cold before but we rarely have the cold and these winds at the same time in this part of the country. we haven't had a lot of that in the last, say, 30 years. the gusts to near 50 miles per hour during the day tomorrow. temperatures in the low to mid-20s, the high today was 26. so, we're not going to get close to that over the next couple of days. sunday's high probably about 16. 26 degrees in dover. lake wallenpaupack, no, this is not a freeze frame. this is a live picture. that's ice that is stuck there in the lake right now. finally cold enough for that. in the poconos a wind chill warning, this is pretty serious until sunday at 1:00 p.m. if you have the right clothes, you cover up everything, you can

be okay. you don't have to stay indoors. this weekend. but you do have to cover yourself properly if you want to rebound safe. the wind chill advisory for the rest of the area until sunday at 9:00 a.m. by sunday afternoon it will be less brutal. and sunday evening too. the hourly forecast tonight shows temperatures not dropping a lot but look what happens to the wind chill. that's because the wind is going to increase so much between 4 and 6:00 a.m. so when you wake up tomorrow morning you are barely going to feel that wind chill. by 2:00, it will be feeling like 3 below. by 8:00, nice dinner out, 11, feeling like 5 below. colder than this north. and the worst of it, 8:00 a.m. sunday, 5 degrees, feeling like 14 below. may actually feel like above zero by sunday evening. so, we're going to get similar

type conditions, all across the area. ocean city may get as low as 8 on sunday morning with a wind chill of 17 below. that's pretty cold. vineland, 5 degrees. 4 degrees in wilmington. 1 in downingtown. at 2 degrees in philadelphia would tie a record. the 18-degree below zero wind chill, that's what makes it rough. toils down 1 below. and 20 below wind chill. allentown, their record is 1 best probably have the÷w chance of breaking the record. the other things that can happen when it's this cold and then bursting pipes are possible. hypothermia and frostbite. you leave any skin exposed and you can get frostbite in minutes. don't forget the pets, they are not even used to this kind of weather. the live radar shows watchy

light snow from southeast pennsylvania down to the delmarva. chester county. had some of this. this is on the light side. that's stretching into parts of montgomery county. very light. a little heavier south of sussex county, delaware. that's toward the delmarva right now. so we have these patchy areas of snow showers coming through during the night tonight. some places could wake up with a coating. everybody is going to wake up with strong winds and it gets colder and colder as the day goes on. patchy light snow during the night tonight. the bitter winds toward day break, what it can do to the wind chill when the wind goes up. tomorrow 20 to 30. gusts as high as 50. temperatures only in the teens during the afternoon. a chance of morning flurriries.

she finished cancer treatment. >> she is tackling a new challenge, new york fashion week. ♪ >> she rocked the runway wowing everyone with her appearance in the kids rock live fashion show. her dad houston texans player devin still always the proud papa posted this video on instagram. he has documented the 5-year-old's fight against cancer since she was diagnosed in 2014. she was treated here in philadelphia at children's hospital. >> i don't think i've seen her without a smile on her face. so positive. >> in time for valentine's day a story that shows true love lasts. >> you've got to see this. >> with a thankful heart. >> six local couples celebrated a little early by renewing their wedding vows. the couples pretty amazing, one

baseball weather this weekend. we have a first alert weather day for saturday and sunday. both days are going to be way colder than what we've seen today. near record cold by sunday morning with dangerous wind chills saturday night especially. and gusts may be up to 50 miles an hour. here's some of the snow showers. mostly on the light u÷side. but could provide enough for a little bit of a dusting. of course going to stick because it's so cold. chester county now, prgetting a little heavier now. moving into delaware county, starting to move through montgomery county right now. as we look farther to the south it's just south of sussex county delaware. we'll see if it sneaks up to the north a little bit over the next couple of hours. a wind chill advisory until sunday at 9:00 a.m., it's not really going to get windy until

daybreak tomorrow. right now temperatures are in the low to mid-20s, we had 26 degrees today. we're not going to get near that tomorrow afternoon or sunday afternoon. feels like it is 9 in allentown now. 17 in philadelphia, 15 in pottstown, and this is nothing compared to the way it is going to feel by this time tomorrow. it's really going to be quite a change and we don't see that kind of combination of extreme cold and wind at the same time. look what happens here. by 10:00 tonight not much of a spread between the temperature and the wind chill. but as the wind increases by morning, feels like 6 at 6. and then goes down. more on how cold it's going to feel and how long that's going to last along with the storm for early next week. >> looking forward to that. we have new information on the royal caribbean cruise ship that was damaged at sea during a winter storm. the coast guard inspected that

ship, it's making repairs on time. but it's not yet cleared to set sail tomorrow on an eight-day cruise. this is new time lapse video of the anthem of the seas caught in rough waters. the storm developed there in the atlantic, the ship suffered damage to part of the propulsion system. relieved passengers returned wednesday, cutting short their 7-day voyage to the bahamas. layoffs are coming for what could be hundreds who work at the mercer county correctional facility. mercer county executive brian hughes said he wants to move inmates to hudson county. close to 300 people work at the facility. the budget proposal calls for reducing that number to less than 100, and using the facility as a satellite office. building a fedex distribution in the bethlehem area is one step closer to a reality. the city's planning commission

approved the deal last night. the warehouse would be located off route 412 near interstate 78. it would create 2500 jobs if fedex agrees to the deal, construction could begin in may. love is in the air at least at city hall. several couples tied to knot. to kick off valentine's day weekend. >> with this ring i thee wed. >> nbc 10 at the annual valentine's day wedding extravaganza. about 50 couples exchanged vows, rings and made it official. one couple said this was the perfect time for them to get married. >> our anniversary is the 16th, birthday the 2160. why not. >> i'm happy that city hall allowed us to do this here today and i'm glad she's my wife. >> this is the 15th year for the wedding extravaganza. >> in honor of valentine's day

petsmart is playing matchmaker. >> that's right. dozens of volunteers will be at stores across the area to help homeless cats and dogs find loving homes. nbc 10 was at this petsmart, this store teamed up with a shelter called forgotten cats, if you are a dog person, there will be dogs at this petsmart as well. as a gift to new owners petsmart  part of national adoption weekend the stores across the country are open until 9:00 tomorrow night -- or tonight. they are open from 9 to 9 tomorrow, and from 10 until 6 on sunday. >> speaking of animals or pets, some septa riders got the surprise when someone found a snake in a trash can. it was dead. it was coiled up in a brown bag at university city station. animal control trying to figure out now what kind of snake it is and how it could have gotten in the garbage.

>> in washington there is a new push to crack down on hotel fraud. a group of house lawmakers is introduce add bill to fight the problem. here's what we know. according to the hotel and lodging association 15 million reservations were made on deceptive booking sites last year. lawmakers say this measure would require third party hotel booking websites to clearly disclose that they are not affiliated with hotels. >> is i hope you know, law enforcement, consumers, as well as the industry itself to monitor the -- and if they see a webpage and see they don't have this disclosure, to immediately go and shut them down and fine them. >> lawmakers say the bill would make it easier to report fraud and give states more power to prosecute criminals. >> people looking for a place to eat this weekend might be tough to get a reservation but maybe

the temperature now in the low to mid-20s, it's been pretty steady over the last several hours. and it's going to be fairly steady for the rest of the evening, too. tomorrow morning when things are going to get cold. now, cape may from the marquis de lafayette hotel, normally one of the warmest places at night. going to be cold too. the other end the coldest. the wind chill warning for the poconos until sunday 1:00 p.m. wind chill advisory until 9:00 a.m. for the wind chill not as severe as what we're seeing in the poconos. so, what are we going to be seeing as we go through the night tonight? the temperature, doesn't drop a whole lot. but the wind picks up and that's what makes it feel so much colder. by the time you get up tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. and then it goes down from there.

here's an extension of that. by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, 14 degrees, feels like zero. 5:00 in the afternoon, so it's about 20 degrees colder than it feels right now. then as we go through tomorrow evening, it's feel like it's below zero and by sunday morning it is feel like 10 below. that in philadelphia colder farther to the north. so, in these conditions you can get some frozen and bursting pipes, hypothermia, if you're wet you can get frostbite if you don't cover everything. remember, including your ears and your toes, those are some of the easiest places to get frors bite. don't forget the pets. here is that area, some generally light snow coming into the region and little bit heavier near newark, delaware, just about coming into wilmington on i-95 now.

christiana. it's not heavy snow but it may be just enough to provide a little bit of a coating and stick on untreated surfaces. this band's coming right rin to philadelphia now. it's going to reduce the visibility somewhat. now you can see the more significant area of snow just south of delaware, again we'll keep an eye on that, see if it does stay south of delaware. so we have more snow showers coming in, during the night tonight it's not widespread, not everybody is going to get it. and the temperature doesn't really plunge until tomorrow. so, when the sun comes up the temperature goes down and the wind goes up. so it's going to feel that much colder across the area. so what's happening next week? we got the arctic high locked in here. it's so cold on sunday, we got moisture coming up from the south so it looks like it's going to start as snow. this area may be sleet, and then the warm air rushes in and everybody changes to rain.

by the time this thing comes to monday night and then on tuesday. so it is not a big snowstorm, it could be some accumulation before the changeover. patchy light snow with bitter winds late. 17 for a low in philadelphia, 12 north and west. as the wind picks up and 20 to 30 gusting as high as 50 tomorrow, temperatures staying in the teens. a chance of flurries. near record low for sunday morning, only 16 for the high. and then there's that storm coming on monday. snow develops through the day, most of it is in the afternoon. changes to rain at night and heavy rain by tuesday morning's rush. no snow or ice for tuesday morning. and then just kind of seasonable or a little below normal temperatures the rest of next week. >> thanks for that, glenn. let's check in with lester holt, he joins us with a look what's coming up. >> good evening.

>> it's truck day. we're loading everything that we accumulated this off season. we're going to put it on a 53-foot truck and take to the clearwater. this signifies that spring training is around the corner. baseball, warm weather and sunshine. >> truck day means that we're heading to spring training soon and we'll meet the guys again and see the new players and staff and start baseball. we bring anything baseball related, helmets, hats, shoes, socks. basically pick your family up and move them to florida for seven weeks so we accommodate as much as possible. this is my 26th spring, so it's exciting time of year.

if you are going out you could see light snow. the first alert weather team is tracking the system. >> dangerous cold did not stop people from hitting the slopes this afternoon. this is expected to be a big weekend in the poconos since it's valentine's day and also presidents day weekend. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking the snow and the bitter cold weather. >> we know it's going to be frigid this weekend. a lot of people have questions about the snow. what does that timing look like? >> we have some snow showers in the area right now, and i was seeing this live shot over philadelphia. you can see some snowflakes there flying in the wind. i don't think it's going to amount to a lot. maybe a dusting in parts of the area. and more snow showers later tonight, more significant snow is next monday. we have a first alert out for the cold, saturday and sunday. the temperatures are going to go down to near record levels. plus we have a lot of wind that's going to create dangerous

wind chill at least at times, and then some wind gusts close to 50 miles an hour during the day tomorrow. here's the one band of snow that's creating the flakes over philly right now. went through chester county, now all through delaware county and philadelphia now, lower montgomery county. portions of gloucester county and salem county in new jersey and also new castle county in delaware, the heavier snow is just south of delaware right now. generally moving to the east. that's the one that has more potential to create any kind of accumulation if it does start to spread to the north. it's down to 20 degrees in pottstown, 21 allentown, reading the wind still not that much of a factor yet. but it will by morning. so it feels like 10 in allentown, 12 in reading. it's going to feel a whole lot colder than that, we'll have those numbers and tell you more about the ear
