breaking news -- >> right now on nbc 10, the nbc 10 first alert weather team is tracking two threats. nirs this dangerous cold which is showing no sign of letting go across the philadelphia region. sky force 10 was above a frozen schuylkill river this morning and the arctic air wasn't enough to stop these runners from hitting the pavement along kelly drive this morning, but they did bundle up. a live look at i-95 in south philadelphia. tonight the roads are clear, but it could be a different story tomorrow as we brace for a round of snow and rain to move in. good evening, i'm denise nakano, a first alert weather condition is in effect. we have team weather coverage of the dangerous cold and the winter storm headed our way. let's go to first alert

meteorologist violeta yass. >> the arctic air going to slowly lift north, it will be a cold night. we're currently at 18 degrees in philadelphia with a wind chill of 10, feeling like 8 below up toward the poconos. we have extended our first alert through tuesday. we're tracking a storm system that's going to bring us snow and eventually heavy rain as well in between that we're looking at a transition period of sleet and freezing rain that's going to make for icy roads, potentially during the evening commute tomorrow. here's the leading edge of the precipitation, you can see it's still well to the south and west. it's going to continue to lift toward our area. although the good news is the morning commute looks okay. here's 10:00 a.m. most of it still off to our south and west. the general idea of what kind of snow we're talking about. generally less than an inch southward. one to three along the i-95 corridor. higher amounts further north and west toward the poconos. we're looking at the potential for ice and flooding rain heading into tuesday, we'll talk about it coming up in a few minutes. a dangerous cold has prompted cities like

philadelphia to issue a code blue to make sure the homeless have shelter tonight. here's a live look at 8th and market streets in center city. you can see it's pretty quiet out there tonight. nbc 10's doug shamel is live in pennsauken in camden county. >> whether it's a warming center here or a frozen city block in philadelphia. the stinging cold is leaving its mark. >> everything is encased in ice. it's just -- bizarre. >> it was a block of ice in the shape of a burned-out auto body shop. michael burns used to live next door and said his old block in frankfurt is unrecognizable at 14 degrees. >> alaska. i mean -- i've never seen anything like it. it's -- it's like a glacier. and just -- >> a winter wonderland. >> firefighters worried about a wall collapse as the thousands of gallons of water they threw

at the six-alarm fire turned to stone within minutes. >> in camden county they worried about the cold and people like richard tomasello. >> i can pretty well handle it. but as you get old ter hurts a little more. >> he came to read and thaw out at the warming center. >> this is fantastic. i mean if you had to one of the only places could you go to get out of the cold. this would be the place. >> camden county freeholder carmen rodriguez said she pushed to improve the code blue response after bitter cold hit home. >> it is personal for me. i had a great uncle who passed away. he froze on a bench. nobody bothered to look for him. >> carmen rodriguez says that by checking on your elderly neighbor, that could spell the difference between life or death. live in camden county. dozens of shelters across the state opened for special hours to get people out of the

dangerous cold. a team of volunteers served a hot breakfast to a capacity crowd at the episcopal church of st. andrews. they say it's been a busy few days, they know these services can make a difference. >> you just have to raise it and put it in another gear. because literally, an hour outside is enough to do people's fragile health in. >> several churches and nonprofits in delaware are working together to provide around-the-clock shelter for homeless in the harsh condition. new information on yesterday's deadly pile-up in lebanon county. police say 64 vehicles were involved in the crash that's being blamed on a snow squall. sky force ten was above the scene in bethel township this morning after state police reopened both lanes of traffic. you can still see the tracks in the snow. now following the massive accident, we asked pen-d.o.t. if

they're prepared for the latest round of winter weather and nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live with more. >> they are ready to go with about 200 trucks tomorrow. but they say yesterday's crash is a good lesson that the snow squalls can come out of absolutely nowhere. meantime, today, officials did release new information about this deadly pile-up. the carnage from yesterday's chain-reaction crash left three dead. state police say the victims were all in their 50s. a man from new york, a woman from bridgewater, new jersey and a truck driver from tennessee. caught up in a snow squall that caused a 64-vehicle pile-up. officials also updated the number of injured, 73 people taken to local hospitals. and now a new storm will cause dangerous conditions on the roads again. >> we're most concerned about is the freezing rain and things getting icy.

>> penn-d.o.t. says they'll have 200 trucks on the road starting tomorrow morning. warning drivers that speed and tailgating can lead to deadly crashes, especially if snow or sleet starts falling. >> you can be driving along, everything is fine and all of a sudden a gust of wind comes along and you have a whiteout. keep that in mind, leave a lot of extra room between your car and the car you're following. >> now penndot does say it will be helpful that tomorrow local school and many businesses will be closed. that means many fewer drivers out on the road. live tonight, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10. this just in, more than 400 students at temple university are out of their dorm after a pipe burst inside. students living inside the 1940 dorm had been relocated to tomlinson theater while crews worked to clear the water. school officials say students should be able to sleep in their rooms tonight. and you can keep track of

the changing weather conditions any time your with your nbc 10 app. tonight investigators look into what caused this house fire in north philadelphia. firefighters had to battle icy conditions along with the flames. nbc 10 on the scene on north bronfils street this morning. some firefighters had ice on their coats and they poured skalt on the ground to make sure they didn't slip. firefighters say dealing with fires in weather like this is a real challenge. >> we have to deal with frozen hydrants and if we shut down any water flow at all we start freezing our lines immediately. >> everyone made it out of the home safely. new at 6:00, the philadelphia woman is recovering tonight after two men forced their way into her home and beat her. police say the suspects were impersonating utility workers when they entered the home on south mole street. both men were armed with guns. the woman suffered cuts to her head and is expected to be okay.

from our jersey shore bureau, two men are under arrest for an attack on an elderly man in an atlanta city could seeno. authorities say a 76-year-old new york man was trying to enter his room at harrah's early yesterday when he was pushed inside by two men wearing masks they assaulted him and stoeld casino chips, money and his phone. the victim has a broken back. the suspects are charged with robbery, aggravated assault and conspiracy. well classes will resume on a regular schedule tomorrow at ursinus college after some 200 students reported symptoms of a stomach illness. school officials say over the weekend the college insured that all public spaces and common areas on campus were cleaned. sanitized and disinfected. health officials are trying to figure out whether the ailment is food-borne or transmitted from person to person. a political battle is brewing in washington following the death of justice antonin

cross river rink in penn's landing, the bitter cold is not keeping these families away from spending time on the ice, violeta will have a weather update in a few minutes. but first, flags are flying at half-staff at the white house tonight. to honor the late supreme court justice, antonin skalia he was found dead in his room at a west texas ranch yesterday. early this morning, scalia's body was taken to a funeral home in el paso where his family is expected to arrive. his body is set to be flown back home to virginia tuesday. scalia would have been 80 next month. now as the tributes to the supreme court justice continue to pour in, those who want to become the next president are weighing in on whether president obama should even try to nominate scalia's successor. nbc 10 national correspondent jennifer johnson reports. >> hours after justice antonin scalia's death president obama made his intentions clear. >> i plan to fulfill my
