in wilmington as we look at the home of the wilmington blue rocks, but it's a much different story here here is a live look at washington, d.c., where the snow is coming down in the nation's capital. presidents' day is a federal holiday. the streets here in st. mary county, maryland. see the snow there on the roads following a plow truck on its way to salt roads and a live look now at the radar shows where some of the heaviest snow is falling, and we could see some problems a little later on when the snow changes to sleet and then, of course, freezing rain. we have live team coverage of this winter storm affecting our area. let's begin with nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> this is an unusual type of storm that is developing here.
11:02 am
first of all, the greatest amounts of snow are going to be in the southern portions of our area. we already have a few inches in some places, cape may from the marquee to lafayette. you can see the lens and the temperatures are below freezing and the snow is changing character a little bit and it is very wet snow. we have snow that will be moving through the area today and if it's not snowing where we are now it will be as we go through the afternoon and it also will change over to sleet and freezing rain over a portion of the area, at least and everybody will see at least some heavy rain during the day on tuesday. as well, we have the first alert out through both days and the area getting hit the hardest and sussex county, delaware and the southern point in our area and winter storm warning at 7:00 tonight and four to eight inches of snow and the rest of the area
11:03 am
has winter weather advisories and most of the region until 10:00 tonight up toward the lehigh valley in poconos and less serious conditions and less snow accumulation and now the longer it takes for this to spread up to the north, the longer it's going to take for the snow to change over to rain in the southern portions of our area and it is starting to spread to the north, as you can see coming up through new castle county, delaware and into salem county, new jersey and we'll be getting into philadelphia within the next hour and it's already starting to change over in cape may county as you saw on the lens of the camera there and from washington, d.c., southward, that's where they're getting hit hard if you extrapolate that into southern delaware, that's where they're going to be getting the greatest amounts of accumulation. . the visibleit tells us how the snow is and we don't have anything from philadelphia northward, but even in
11:04 am
wilmington, we're starting to see some snow, getting heavier snow in dover and millville. pretty heavy snow in atlantic city right now and so parts of our area are already getting socked with this. the temperatures, of course, are going to be critical and they're way below freezing even in southern portions of our area, so it will take a while for the warming to continue this is the 32 degree line in red as we go through the noon hour. so wherever it is north of that line it is sticking. in other parts of the area and southern parts it will start melting a little bit more and then here comes the rain. there's 2:00. there's 4:00 and it may be some of the heaviest snow in and around the philadelphia area and points to the north while they're getting significant rain farther to the south and by 6:00, that 32-degree line is already all of the way up to the lehigh valley. so you can see some big changes

11:06 am
we found the garden state parkway and most main roads to be wet this morning, but mostly clear. however, many side streets are snow covered and we have video of that and cape may county road crews started their shift at 5:00 this morning and 12 trucks are out salting and 212 miles of county road. >> i've had so many customers this morning that he just took over, took the broom and took the shovel and said hey, let me do this for you. you have a lot of people in your store. >> you're very lucky. >> i am, but it's cape may and everyone is happy and just take care of each other. >> reporter: now that was the manager of cape may peanut butter company where the husband of a woman shopping decided to pitch in and he volunteered to do the work himself. obviously, a very nice guy. i talked with him and coming up at 11:30 you'll hear why he felt

11:08 am
schuylkill, from the expressway, a 13-minute drive time and no big deal for the drive time and we do have construction headed southbound which is why you're seeing a drive time. now we don't have any significant delays for philadelphia international airport and you can see it's a different story in newark. cancellations leaving philly so far from the airport have been thick and headed to philly has been eight so far. definitely head when you head out the door. check that american airlines have asked customers to change their travel plans. it was between yesterday and today. definitely check before you go. vai? >> good advice. thank you, jessica. make sure you have your free nbc ten app on your phone and tablet and customize the forecast for your neighborhood. sky force 10 was over
