nbc 10 breaking news. officer shot right now in allentown police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound and police say the man who shot him is in custody after an hour's long standoff. getting back online after the storm. heavy rain and wind knocked out power and damaged homes and businesses across the area. we are finally drying out. temperatures above freezing, expect sunshine today ahead of a weekend warmup. that sounds good. 4:00 a.m. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's find out about the sunshine and maybe a glimpse at the weekend warmup with meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast. bill? >> tracy, we're doing much better today. the clouds are still with us but we have started to dry out completely. a little bit of wind will help that. fortunately, above freezing,

everyone except the pocono mountains where it's 29 degrees. we will see sunshine break through the clouds and the temperatures will be climbing. 36 degrees at 6:00. by 9:00, pretty good, nice and sunny, 37 and 42 degrees with winds out of the west/northwest at 12 miles an hour at noontime today. your hour by hour forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington has a look at first alert traffic. >> bill, we do have something already in the books right here, haddon township, a utility pole is down due to an earlier accident scene on the black horse pike southbound around nicholson road. two right lanes are closed. no huge backups because of that. here's vine street expressway. moving through center city, of course, they moved this camera down but right in here, westbound towards the schuylkill, eastbound towards 95. around 24th street, no problems to get to 30th street station as well. the rest of the drive times are

okay. actually seeing slowdowns on 95. we'll have to check out what that's about. there should be no road delays rye now. maybe something happened within the last few minutes. we'll check with that and we'll get you an answer. an allentown police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound. the officer was shot along godfrey street and the suspect then barricaded himself inside the home for hours. that standoff is over and we're learning new details about the suspect's link to a murder investigation. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in allentown to explain. katy, i know we got that new information just within the past half hour. fill us in. >> reporter: we are getting new information by the hour on this case. you mentioned that stanoff. during the standoff, many people in this apartment complex you're about to see were evacuated. we're told they are now back in their apartment homes. we have a live picture from the

scene, just across town from where i am. i'm at the hospital. around 10:00 last night, an allentown police officer with the criminal investigations division was following leads from a weekend homicide. the officer was serving a search warrant onç a property on nort godfrey street when we're told gunfire erupted from inside one of the apartments, shots fired at police and this officer was hit in the arm. a suspect, the shooter was also hit, too, by return gunfire from police. both men are expected to recover. this is all connected, we've learn, to a weekend murder that occurred in allentown of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a recycling bin. now, that woman who has not been identified yet was shot several times. her body was found not far from the scene of last night's shooting. police say, again, they were following leads in that homicide investigation which took them to this apartment which is where

the shooting occurred. coming up in the next 25 minutes you'll hear from the allentown police chief about what transpired just a few hours ago. reporting live in allentown, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. this morning, a camden county pizza place is in shambles after someone smashed through the front of the building. skyforce 10 was over the scene insomer da som esome som esomes. the 88-year-old driver thought the car was in reverse but it was in drive. the owner of the shop and several workers were inside at the time. >> everybody thought i was hurt because i was in the dining room. we all called each other's names, my friends, the employee i had helping me out. everybody was okay. >> the driver is also okay. the pizza place had just opened this week. today rowan university

trustees plan to take the first step toward building a medical school in atlantic city. ac is about an hour away from the main campus in gloucester county. if it's feasible, rowan school of osteopathic medicine would partner with atlantic care to build a medical school campus. both rowan and atlantic care are paying for the study. today pennsylvania governor tom wolf will be in philadelphia to officially launch aç new shipping service that will create hundreds of jobs for the city's port. it links the packer avenue marine terminal with ports around the gulf of mexico. first shipment arrived in philadelphia earlier this month. the new service will add 100 jobs to the marine terminal and create 300 to 400 trucking and warehouse jobs. pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane said she will not run for re-election. her law license was suspended after she was charged with leaking grand jury information

and lying about it. the republican controlled house has voted to begin impeachment proceedings against her. those are not the reasons she says she's not going to run. she says it's about family. >> my sons were 8 and 9 within i decided to run, now they're growing older. >> kane is the first woman and first democrat to be elected pennsylvania attorney general since it became an elected position in 1980. a montgomery county judge refused to halt or delay the criminal case against bill cosby. yesterday, the judge denied a motion to have the state supreme court review a key pretrial issue which means his preliminary hearing and sexual assault case will go forward. he's due in court march 8th. what a mess. this storm damage in gloucester county is just part of the cleanup that's under way across our region today. skyforce 10 captured the damage from yesterday's wild weather. powerful winds ripped the roof off this boys club in the homesburg section of philadelphia. inside, water is leaking and

gaping holes dot the ceiling. the boys club set up a fund-raiser. we've posted a link to that an nbc10.com. the damage will linger for a while. >> it's a tragedy. >> these coaches live for these kids. it's heartbreaking. >> i like playing hockey here. >> it's a shame for the families, the kids that come here. everybody is a volunteer. >> also yesterday high winds toppled over this construction site in port richmond. witnesses told us the wind came out of nowhere. with the crash it sounded like a bolt of lightning. seven minutes past 4:00 right now. 37 degrees at philly international. today is the day philliesç pitchers and catchers report to spring training. one of the guests will be hall of famer mike schmidt. he shared batting tips with fans attending phillies fantasies camps. >> i came up in an era, at a time when we were taught as hitters to hit the fastball and hit it out front of home plate.

morning. on 95 around girard avenue. i wanted to check in with 95 because we had slower drive times. no problems across the board, no accidents or anything disrupting that drive time. you can see we're back to normal, southbound woodhaven road to the vine street expressway is a 14-minute trip. average speeds in the 50s. you'll be fine going in or out of center city at least right now. here's the pa turnpike, no problems here as well. everything is moving along. we're in the green. a 23-minute trip, westbound from route 1 to valley forge. mass transit, if this is your means of transportation, no delays across the board for septa, amtrak, new jersey transit, patco or d.a.r.t. new information about the new jersey nurse who reused needles during a flu clinic, next, hear why the nurse said she did it. >> i'm matt delucia, live in camden where county health officials say they are being aggressive about the zika virus. i'll explain, next.

it's 4:13. world health officials say they may need to use controversial methods to stop the spread of the zika virus which means they'll consider the use of genetically modified mosquitos to wipe out zika. environmentalists worry the genetically modified approach could hurt the environment. matt delucia is live in camden to explain what officials are doing. >> this is something that local health departments and health departments throughout the car are look at more closely now, especially because zika does

have the potential to cause serious harm. here in camden county, the health officials tell me, they are, çquote, being very aggressive about it. the cdc sent out notices to states and local health departments about the mosquito-borne virus that is mostly being contracted in central and south america. as we mentioned, the virus has been shown to cause birth defects if a pregnant woman is infected. here in camden county, it's far too cold to see mosquitos here right now. i'm told the mosquitos we do see here are the same type that can carry zika. this comes down to monitoring how this virus is spreading and if anyone from the area is infected. >> when they come back, of course, the state works closely with our health department to make sure if anybody does come in, is identified, we are very quickly notified. of course we have the capability to do what is necessary. >> reporter: a lot of what we've been hearing and talking about from health officials is

its hands following last month's blizzard. the storm's powerful waves left two storm pipes exposed and damaged. the paipes are part of the beac replenishment project. city engineers estimate the repairs could cost up to $1.2 million. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 18 minutes after 4:00. getting chilly outside. the temperatures have dropped into the 30s after that warm, wet and çwindy day yesterday. we are drying out this morning. still clouds overhead but you won't find any snowflakes or rain drops, not today. 38 degrees right now in philadelphia. westerly wind at 5 miles an hour. that's giving us a wind chill of 34. even the wind chill is above freezing this morning. that is 9 degrees cooler than yesterday. gives you an idea of how warm it was yesterday. the wind has died down. it will stay light out of the northwest this morning, picking up some this afternoon. by this afternoon, though, the temperatures will be in the 40s. 37 degrees right now in trenton.
