nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 11:00, shot in the line of duty. an allentown police detective is recovering this morning after being shot while investigating the shooting death of a woman found dead inside a recycling bin. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. the detective is now out of the hospital and doing okay. the man police accuse of pulling the trigger is in custody at another hospital. detectives arrived at an apartment building on north godfrey street to serve a warrant in a murder investigation, and that investigation is continuing at this hour. nbc 10's drew smith is live for us at the scene. drew, this apartment is close to where the body was found over the weekend? >> calle

>> reporter: that's right, vai. this is the crime scene from last night. it's still roped off and police are out here working this. i want to spin the camera around, you can see the stop sign, there's another street. it was sunday when investigators were out here. they found that body in a recycle bin just one block up. the unidentified woman in there had gunshot wounds to her body. last night more gunshots, this time here at this apartment building and this time police were involved. allentown's police chief says detectives didn't get much of a chance to serve a warrant last night. >> they were met by gunfire. one of our officers was shot. >> reporter: an ambulance took the officer off to the hospital. >> we're just happy that he's in good condition right now. >> reporter: police say after an exchange of bullets the gunman barricaded himself inside. a witness who did not want to give his name or show his face, says he was here. >> i was like, oh, my god. >> reporter: his mother lives upstairs. >> i heard the shots, you know. and i said that's why the detective was here. they're looking for somebody. >> reporter: a s.w.a.t. team

rushed in and police sealed off north godfrey street. officers began evacuating neighbors. >> he was trapped. they told them to stay in the north corner or something. and the other couple was also trapped in there. >> reporter: in the daylight you can see the apartment windows are shattered. officers stood guard for hours at the propped open front door. the witness said he didn't know much about the man who lived here, but he says a woman was staying there too. >> he's been here about a year. he used to live in another building. they just moved him over here. >> reporter: allentown's mayor put out a statement this morning wishing the officer a speedy recovery. and we're asking police about what the connection is between that body that was found in this apartment. right now police aren't ready to answer that question. live in allentown, drew smith, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, we're finally enjoying a calm day with seasonal temperatures for mid-february. here's a live look now at

boathouse row in philadelphia. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with our forecast. not a bad day compared to the last couple of days, glenn. >> well, yeah, it doesn't take much to have improvement over the last couple of days, vai. it is really a whole lot calmer day than what we've seen. we had a lot of wind yesterday. a lot of rain. it's cloudy across most of the area, but it's not windy. it's not freezing cold. there are all those clouds. you can see them toward the jersey shore, delaware beach that's about the only place that has some sunshine. but there's nothing on the radar, as you can see here. and we don't expect anything during the day. we do have a lot of clouds around, and we're going to keep that for much of the day. it's keeping the temperatures down a bit. still in the upper 30s north and west, but without a whole lot of wind it doesn't feel all that cold. the temperatures holding fairly steady into the low 40s in

philadelphia, dropping into the upper 30s later tonight. again, not that much wind. let you know when the temperatures really going to jump up. we have some numbers close to 60 degrees in the seven-day. that's in a few minutes. all right. thank you, glenn. dry weather will help for the cleanup skyforce 10 captured storm damage from yesterday's wild weather. powerful winds ripped the roof off this boys club in the holmesburg section of philadelphia. meanwhile inside water leaking and gaping holes dot the ceiling. family members told us the impact will linger for a while. >> looking at tragedy right now. >> these coaches live for these kids. and it's really, really heartbreaking. >> i like playing hockey here. >> it's a shame for the families, the kids that come here. you know, everybody's a volunteer. >> also yesterday high winds toppled over this construction site in port richmond. witnesses told us the wind came out of nowhere with a crash

sounded like a bolt of lightning. time now for a check on the roads with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. jessica, what do you see out there? >> a few things, vai. 95 we have big delays approaching woodhaven road headed northbound because penndot has some rolling work crews out there working on some construction pronlt projects. you can see northbound almost at a standstill. a 39-minute drive time rare for this time of day northbound from the vine street expressway to woodhaven road and average speeds in the 20s there at least past that point. checking in with area bridges, no scheduled but the commodore barry has an accident westbound into the p.a. side. two lanes blocked so big backups on 322. there's also a disabled vehicle blocking the right lane on the vine street expressway westbound right before the ben franklin parkway. a little slow by the scene, but basically doing okay. out in haddon township this has been out here all morning.

a yuutility pole down. two right lanes are closed if you take mass transit the lans/doyles line running on a 20-minute delay due to electr electrical repairs, vai. thank you. new video police hope will help them identify the suspects in the valentine's day home invasion and robbery in point breeze. cameras captured two men knocking on a door, they claimed they needed to check the water pipes but the victim didn't let them in. the pair returned a short time later and forced themselves inside where they beat and robbed the victim. if you happen to recognize these two men, you're asked to call police. philadelphia police are looking for the thieves who stole more than $4,000 worth of jeans from a center city bloomingdale's. investigators say nine people wearing ski masks pulled off the heist at the liberty place store early last night. authorities have not made any arrests in that case. and happening now, a federal

appeals court in philadelphia is once again looking at whether sports betting should be legalized at casinos and racetracks in new jersey. supporters hope sports gambling will boost revenues for the state, but the ncaa, the nba, the nhl and major league baseball oppose it saying it will compromise the integrity of their games. the appeals court rejected a state sports betting law twice before but has agreed to re-hear the last ruling. a montgomery county judge has refused to halt or delay the criminal case against bill cosby. yesterday the judge denied a motion to have the state superior court review a key pretrial issue. that means cosby's preliminary hearing in his sexual assault case will go forward. he is due in court march 8th. and happening now, pennsylvania governor tom wolf is in philadelphia to officially launch a new shipping service that will create hundreds of jobs for the city's port. cargo service links the packer avenue marine terminal with ports around the gulf of mexico. the first shipment arrived in

philadelphia earlier this month. the new service will add 100 jobs to the marine terminal and create 300 to 400 trucking and warehouse jobs. and today rowan university trustees plan to take the first step towards building a medical school. about an hour away from the main campus in gloucester county. trustees will choose a consulting firm to study the possible project. now, if it's feasible, rowan school of osteo pathic medicine would partner to build a medical school campus. both will pay for that study. caitlyn jenner is scheduled to speak at the university of pennsylvania later today. jenner will join, wrote the "vanity fair" article after her transition last year. student organizers say they try to bring in speakers who promote healthy discussions on topical

issues. fans have only a few days to see the ringling brothers and ba barnum & bailey elephants perform. tonight through sunday night, after this tour they'll retire the ringling brothers center for elephant conservation in florida. ringling announced it would end the elephant act after decades of accusations of abuse by animal activist groups. the circus says it won every lawsuit concerning those claims and that it's ending the act for economic reasons. ordered to hack. why apple is fighting a judge's ruling that's related to last year's killings in san bernardino. it's igniting a debate over digital privacy versus national security. plus, broken wings. the incident this morning that led to flight delays and some panic in the motor city. dry and breezy today, and i am tracking some big changes for the weekend. it's going to be a whole lot

tech giant apple is vowing to fight a judge's order forcing it to help federal investigators access an iphone belonging to one of the san bernardino shooters. as nbc's steve patterson showing us, the company is taking a stand to protect customer privacy. >> reporter: a federal judge tuesday ordered tech giant apple to help the fbi unlock the

iphone of san bernardino mass shooter ee eer farook. authorities are still trying to fill in the 18 missing minutes of the killers' actions after the shooting. >> that 18 minutes is critical. >> reporter: the fbi wants to know if anything on the phone can fill in that gap, and if there are any other clues to the plot that left 14 people dead and 22 wounded. just last week fbi director james comey told a senate panel getting into farook's phone is key. >> we still have one of those killers' phones that we have not been able to open. and it's been over two months now. we're still working on it. >> reporter: overnight apple's tim cook released a statement saying it's cooperated with the fbi on the case but will fight the order saying, quote, the united states government has demanded that apple take an unprecedented step which threatens the security of our customers. we oppose the order, which has implications far beyond the legal case at hand.

cook has been an adamant opponent of opening phones to the government, telling cbs's "60 minutes," it would make us all vulnerable. >> on your smartphone today on your iphone, there's likely health information, there's financial information. and you should have the ability to protect it. and the only way we know how to do that is to encrypt it. why is that? it's because if there's a way to get in, then somebody will find a way in. >> that was nbc's steve patterson reporting. and we should note what the government wants apple to do is to disable the built-in security software that could auto delete all the data on the phone when they try to crack it. software that goes into effect when you put the incorrect password too many times. well, the detroit metro airport is trying to figure out how two planes clipped each other this morning. a southwest airlines plane was on a de-icing pad at the same

time as this american airlines jet was headed down the runway toward the pad. the wing of the american airlines plane hit the tail of the southwest plane. no one on either plane was hurt. both flights were destined for dallas. passengers were moved to other planes to continue onto their destination. and take a look at this fire that destroyed a church in dallas, texas, this morning. this was around 8:00 a.m. our time. you see flames shooting from the building and smoke pouring into the air. the roof and much of the interior of the church were burned away. there were no reports of any injuries. and the cause of this fire is still under investigation. the public will get the chance to pay final respects to the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. scalia's body will lie in repose at the supreme court on friday. current and retired justices will line the steps of the high court while scalia's casket is carried into the great hall. a funeral mass will be held saturday in washington. scalia died over the weekend at the age of 79.

meanwhile, president obama says there's more than enough time for the senate to consider a supreme court nominee this year. the president says his pick will be an outstanding legal mind who is indisputably qualified. he also had a few words for the republicans who want him to leave the nomination to the next president. >> i'm amused when i hear people who claim to be strict interpreters of the constitution suddenly reading into it a whole series of provisions that are not there. >> the president has a list of possible nominees that's said to include federal judges sri of washington, d.c. and jane kelly of iowa. the national weather service confirmed two tornadoes touched down in south florida yesterday. one of the twisters hit broward county and the other blew through the miami-dade area. you can see some of the damage through the air. there were no reports of any

injuries. now your first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> very unusual to see tornadoes like that in south florida. about the only general way you get that is you have waterspouts that come on land. that was not the case yesterday. we are drying out across the region. we had the snow and ice, and then all the rain and wind yesterday. things really calming down. we've got a warm weekend ahead. way above average temperatures. and then a potential coastal storm next week. more on that coming up. we have cloudy skies at the moment. it's 42 degrees. the wind is 13 miles an hour. only gusting to 16, but it's 17 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. so it is a little on the chilly side especially without the sunshine. and it's in the 30s allentown, reading, pottstown, west chester, lancaster, all 36 to 38 degrees. 27 in the poconos. they get to make snow now for

quite a while. and as you can see the warm spot 44 degrees in atlantic city, getting a little bit of sun right down on south jersey shore and delaware beaches. so the temperature as we go through the day today only going up another couple degrees. not really plunging during the night tonight either. and without a whole lot of wind, it's still relatively comfortable. a lot of clouds around here, but it is dry. a little bit of sunshine right toward the shore. and the radar continues to show nothing close by and nothing threatening, at least for quite a while. we have a few snow flurries, that's up toward the great lakes generally staying well to the north. another weak system back across iowa, but this is a fairly quiet pattern. it's not necessarily going to stay that way. as we go into next week we're talking about tuesday and into wednesday the computer model showing some sort of a coastal

storm, threat of at least some snow for at least parts of our area. question of course is going to be with the track is it going to be closer to the coast, bring in warmer air. so it's going to be one of those cases probably where the better chance of snow would be north and west. and this is mostly for wednesday of next week. the temperatures going into the 40s today, dropping into the 30s tonight. temperatures fairly close to average for this time of the year. for today, clouds and perhaps a little bit of sunshine. high temperatures only in the low to mid 40s. not nearly as windy as yesterday. and the seven-day forecast, well, we're seeing colder weather tomorrow with some wind. so that's the coldest day of the week. then on friday chance of a shower late. and look at what happens over the weekend. saturday 59, sunday 57 and then there's that chance of a storm

police detective shot as hefs investigating the shooting death of a woman found dead inside a recycling bin. the detective is doing okay this morning. the suspect is in custody. the shooting happened just as police began to search an apartment on north godfrey street last night. the warrant was in connection to the body found this weekend. nbc 10's drew smith is following the latest on this case in allentown. >> reporter: police continue to keep the end of north god dpz frey street roped off. you can see there is some damage to this apartment building. the window's smashed. that all happened during the barricade situation overnight. police came here looking for evidence in the case of an unidentified woman's body found in a recycling bin just one street over. what they found was a man with a gun. they say there was an exchange of gunfire. the officer and man both wounded but expected to survive. the officer already is out of the hospital. witnesses say it was tense here overnight as they had to evacuate while police tried to negotiate with the man.

through the last couple of days. what the poconos needs is some colder weather so they can at least make snow. and that's what they're getting. this is at camelback, and it is cloudy. they're not going to get any natural snow, but it is going to stay cold enough to make it all the way up to the weekend. over center city, philadelphia, we've got overcast conditions. and that of course going to prech prevent temperature from going up a little higher than it is right now. and the clouds don't show any sign of breaking, at least not any time soon. it also doesn't show any kind of rain falling from those clouds. back to the west. few snow flurries in north central pennsylvania. they seem to have fallen apart. little bit more around the great lakes, but that doesn't look like it's coming this way. so it does look like we get a chance to dry out today. we're still in the upper 30s north and west. we may barely get above 40 degrees there. maybe into the mid-40s at best in the philadelphia area, but

that's about average for this time of the year. so that's what we're seeing. temperatures in the low 40s this afternoon. not a lot of wind. and then we cool down somewhat tonight. we've got much warmer weather in the seven-day and also a chance of a coastal storm coming up in just a few minutes. all right. thank you, glenn. the latest polls in south carolina show jeb bush bunched tightly with other candidates vying for second place in the primary. state republican poll shows donald trump with about 33% among likely voters. florida senator marco rubio and texas senator ted cruz are tied with 14%. jeb bush is right on their heels with 13%. and this morning trump took questions at a town hall meeting in bluffton, south carolina. he again challenged ted cruz's honesty and accused the texas senator of lying. trump also vowed to rebuild the military. jeb bush also held his own town hall this morning, about 30 miles away from trump's. the former florida governor took questions in beaufort, south

carolina. about an hour and a half away from bush's event fellow floridian marco rubio held a town hall meeting in mt. pleasant, south carolina. rubio accused president obama of ignoring the constitution and said that hillary clinton's e-mail scandal disqualified her from serving as commander in chief. about two hours away from rubio dr. ben carson held a veterans round table in columbia, south carolina. he discussed plans for improving veterans medical care. and in the democratic race hillary clinton is maintaining a sizable lead in south carolina. a new cnn poll shows clinton ahead of senator bernie sanders by 18 points. nevada holds its democratic caucus on saturday. and a new poll shows a very tight race there. the cnn/orc survey finds 48% of likely democratic caucus goers supporting clinton and 47% backing sanders.

nevada republicans held their caucus next tuesday. the poll shows donald trump topping the field at 48% followed by marco rubio at 19% and ted cruz close behind at 17%. pope francis ends his historic trip to mexico later today with a mass in juarez, mexico. there will be tens of thousands sharing the moment just across the border in el paso. jay gray is there in el paso with more on this special day. >> reporter: well, final preparations underway here at the sun bowl on the university of texas el pas so campus. later today 50,000 expected to gather to listen as the pope delivers his final mass from just across the border just a few miles away in juarez. >> close to mexico which i haven't seen in nearly 20 years it's very emotional. >> reporter: the end of a five-day tour for the pope.

again, tens of thousands will be here it will be a mix of really theology and technology this afternoon. there will be a two-way video feed, so the pope will be able to see and hear those who gather here as they watch and listen to his message. we expect to see people start to fill this stadium long before the mass this afternoon. they'll join in prayer and song celebrating the papal visit. that is the latest for now from el paso, i'm jay gray, nbc news. >> and pope francis he lost his temper yesterday during another stop on his trip. some faithful followers tugged on the pope's sleeve as he greeted them yesterday in the central part of the country. after it happened the second time, see the pope there flash of displeased expression and reportedly told the crowd not to be selfish. the pope addressed and then asked the crowd to spread out. the pope left the area a few minutes later.

alarms sounded as smoke filled a boston subway station last night. a metal panel fell off one car and landed on the tracks hitting the electric third rail. there was no fire but the heat caused smoke to fill the cars. there were no injuries reported. and this south florida teenager is accused of opening a medical practice and pretending to be a doctor. malachi love-robinson was arrested after examining an undercover officer. pretended to have a ph.d. and other certifications. investigators say love-robinson was caught posing as a gynecologist last year but was not charged. an estimated 40 million americans owe student loan debt. if you're one of them, you need to listen to this. a team of u.s. marshals recently arrested a houston man because he hadn't repaid a 29-year-old student loan. this is paul acre. he says he was handcuffed and shackled. acre says he was briefly put in a cell before being brought before a judge who ordered him

to pay over time $5,700 to cover the loan and unpaid interest. >> so unrealistic that you can treat a citizen as if he's a drug dealer. >> the people in debt out there shouldn't be afraid u.s. marshals are going to come and kick their door down. this was an extreme case. it was escalated by mr. akers himself. >> he admits he does owe the money. the u.s. marshals service says aker refused multiple requests to appear in court dating back to 2012. later today we'll find out more about one of the winners of the billion dollar powerball jackpot. the state of florida is holding a press conference. three winning tickets were sold for the $1.5 billion prize. and only a family in tennessee have come forward so far. stranded travelers find some unexpected entertainment at the washington airport. an orchestra performed for them. take a listen.

♪ this high school orchestra from utah was supposed to fly back to salt lake monday after playing at the kennedy center and touring the capital. instead, snow and ice canceled their flights. so the kids decided to do what they do best, play a concert. >> it's the weirdest place i've ever played. >> we kind of had an instinct to kind of play music and then it turned out to be some giant like concert in the middle. it was really, really cool. >> the band's captive audience said the music helped calm their nerves and enjoy some of the time as they were trapped at the airport. good for them. right on target, the move by one of the country's biggest retailers that's getting a lot of praise this morning. glenn. well, a lot of clouds around, but some sun during the day today. and i am tracking a big warmup for the weekend. i'll break down the timing of it all just ahead. ÷ú@úx

wednesday's child. also call the national adoption center directly at 1-866-do-adopt. living in an area with a lot of pollution could increase your risk of stroke. researchers at drexel university analyzed data from the u.s. and china. the two countries emit the largest amounts of greenhouse gases in the world. the study showed areas with high level of dust and smoke pollution had more stroke cases. temperature also impacted air quality and stroke risk. the southern u.s., which is usually warmer than the rest of the country, has the most pollution and the highest stroke rates. target will soon be rolling out a new type of shopping cart for children or adults with special needs. they're called caroline's carts. and they feature a larger harness equipped seat and foam handles that swing outward. the design makes it easier for parents or caretakers to shop with a wheelchair bound child or adult. an alabama mother designed the carts with her 7-year-old special needs daughter caroline

you. that coffee table you have in your living room, that set of dishes you use for breakfast this morning, perhaps a television or the handheld device you're watching us on right now, so who says there aren't good paying creative jobs out there? next week a local organization is opening the eyes of some at-risk youth to their amazing potential. and look around someone designed this office chair, everything that you see that's around us. barbara chandler alan is the founder and executive director of fresh artist and she's here with jason james, a graphic designer taking part in a three-day pop-up expo next week called cool jobs. we appreciate you both for coming here. barbara, start with you. tell us about the organization and the mission of cool jobs. >> fresh artist was founded eight years ago. and the basic mission was we saw something that was broken in the school district, art was being flashed. we decided to create an organization that with the

childrens help the schools would raise money to deliver art supplies and innovative programs to the schools. we've delivered more than $600,000 in art supplies and programs in our first eight years. then we realized there was something that we had not known about, and that was the enormous dropout rate of kids after eighth grade leaving the school district in the thousands. we were appalled. we got kind of angry. we said what can we do about this. and we looked to all of the designers. and we said, you know, there are great jobs out there. if kids knew this when they're in seventh grade before they dropped out, if they knew that they could be the person that actually designed all those wonderful things they covet, the iphone, the sneakers, the skateboard, office chairs they're not too interested in in seventh grade, but the idea of getting them early enough so that we can basically throw them a lifeline, introduce them open access to people who do these jobs, who go to work in a studio every day instead of an office maybe they would stay in school,

pick the best fit high school and many student high school and art and destein in philadelphia learn about the college after school programs and that we could in fact inspire them to stay in school and basically choose a career path. it's a very, very hod idea and unusual idea to go to kids who are 12, but that's really the new theory. get them early. >> before i get to jason, getting them early, i'm guessing that's why you're targeting seventh graders? >> absolutely. >> jason, you're a graphic designer. >> yeah. >> what would you want kids to know about your job how cool it is and the opportunitys that are out there that exist for them they may not think is possible. >> it's all about creative exprele expressi expression. the thing that my job allows me to do is to perform creatively to kind of get out of my mind the things that make me happy, the things that make me sad. it's just a form of creative access. and that's what cool jobs is doing where i get to talk with the kids to really get on their

there, peeks of sunshine coming through but not many. 42 degrees, the wind is 13 miles an hour. and 17 degrees colder than it was this time yesterday. the temperatures as we go through the rest of the day not going up very much because of the cloud cover. and then tonight not going down very much because of the cloud cov cover. makes a big difference. speaking of temperatures, they are still in the 30s. 37 in allentown, quakertown, doylestown, blue bell, reading, coatesville and pottstown 38 degrees. mt. pocono 27. the west-northwest wind a dry wind, 40 wilmington and mount holly. not uniform temperatures when you have cloudy skies. 40 in north delaware as well. you see where we saw the sunshine at the jersey shore, that seems to be disappearing as clouds continue to move from west to east, but we're not

seeing any kind of precipitation on the radar. there are a few snow flurries in northwestern pennsylvania. not really making them even to the mountains let alone across the mountains. so you won't expect any kind of flurries or showers today. as we go through the night tonight, temperatures will be dropping below freezing. so there may be a few icy spots in places that do see melting this afternoon then a little bit of refreezing tonight. the rest of the day today a lot of clouds around with just a little sun through them. high temperatures in the low to mid-40s. and the seven-day forecast a chilly day tomorrow with a bit of a breeze as well. not quite as cold. by friday afternoon after a cold start chance of couple showers late in the day and then the weekend is pretty incredible especially compared to this last one. getting close to 60 degrees on saturday, 57 sunday. then there's a chance of that winter storm for next tuesday

pope francis has just landed in ciudad juarez, mexico. live look from the airport. you can see his plane just touched down still on the tarmac.

you can hear the mariachi music in the background. thousands of people are gathered there. there's quite a festive scene. pope francis will visit a prison while he's here and speak at a high school. then he will celebrate mass later this evening as he continues his visit to mexico. this is of course mexico a predominantly catholic country. thousands of well-wishers and pilgrims come to hear the loud speakers, p.a. system in the background. they're making announcements here. excited for the pope to make his visit. coming up this afternoon starting at 3:00 from sexiest man alive to superhero ryan reynolds sits down with ellen to talk about his box office hit "dead pool." then nbc 10 news at 4:00 this afternoon could elephants hold the key to fighting cancer? doctors tell us what's unique about these animals and why they could help humans fight the disease this afternoon at nbc 10 news at 4:00.
