million dollars in heroin. why it could be a major break through in an epidemic fight. from hero to handcuffs, an officer that survived a bullet to the stomach is accused of breaking a man's leg. >> my leg and my was swelled up. like a balloon. >> good evening. >> for years, detective adam o'donnell hailed as a role model for the philadelphia department, he survived a shootout. >> police want him off the force saying he attacked a man and tried to keep it secret. denise nakano is live at the police department. >> reporter: the alleged victim said he was brought here for questioning and assaulted by a detective on the way out. the district attorney's office says this is a senseless attack. >> kicked me on this -- this

leg. >> reporter: he spoke only to nbc 10 about the injuries he said he suffered last year at the hands of philadelphia police detective adam o'donnell. >> held me in the cell for two hours for no reason and then kicked my leg and for no reason. he assaulted me. >> reporter: o'donnell is well-known for surviving a shootout new year's eve of 2010 shot in the stomach. this promotes the bullet-proof vest that saved his life. >> very pleased with the charge. >> reporter: he says o'donnell is anything but a model officer on the day of the alleged assault. the d.a. said he took him behind the building and kicked him in the leg and broke his leg above the knee. >> if you want to do, there's no cameras out here. >> reporter: the former detective faces charges that including including a ra investigated

assaul assault. >> it's ludicrous. >> reporter: union lawyers will defend o'donnell and work to get the job back. >> doing the job every day and a mild mannered officer. there's nothing here to lead me to believe this is true. >> reporter: o'donnell is suspended for 30 days with the intent to dismiss. reporting live outside the special victims unit, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. a student is recovering, another on the run after a shooting on the school bus in chester this morning. police say the 16-year-old suspect fired four shots striking another teenager. a student scattered. a washt is issued for his arrest. no one else was hurt. also new at 11:00, bill cosby is fired back in a breach of contract lawsuit. the lawsuit filed the day before a key hearing in the criminal sex assault case earlier this month names constand, the lawyer

and mother and the publisher of the national enquirer. constand accused cosby of drugging and abusing her in 2005. the lawsuit is under seal and the legal team declined to comment. we are learning more about the shooting of an allentown police officer last night. police tell us the suspect opened fire on detectives serving a warrant around 10:00 last night. the officer shot in the arm. detectives fired back and shot the suspect. he was wanted in connection with a murder of a woman found in a recycling bin two blocks away. neighbors say they often saw the suspect and the victim walking together but they hadn't seen the woman in days. >> when she used to walk, she had black slacks on and black and white sneakers on but in the dumpster is black and white nikes and hit me in the head. i said, you know what? i said they couldn't be that girl. you know? and here it was. identified the woman found in

they contact her family. the suspect is in police custody at an allentown hospital tonight. this evening, police hope they cut off a major drug pipeline in the area. >> they arrested a man accused of more than a million dollars worth of heroin and say the major bust happened in montgomery county. randy gyllenhaal reports from norr norristown. >> reporter: the 3 kilos of heroin would have cost addicts a million bucks on the street but police got to it first. >> heroin's cheap. and it's deadly. >> reporter: authorities recorded this video of david pachako hiding drugs in car batteries and transporting to montgomery county and beyond. he owns d & j towing in norristown. >> really surprised. he's a good person. >> reporter: but the families of heroin addicts say the charges are a step towards justice.

>> i feel good the that there's a start but there's such an epidemic out there. this is just a small steppingstone. >> reporter: kathy water's son anthony is in detox after months of addiction saying we need more funding for rehab and the life saving heroin anti-dote narcan. >> we need help out there. we need to fight for our kids. this generation is dwindling away. >> reporter: the save a life foundation holds auctions to raise money for treatment programs. >> fund-raiser is to actually help out 44 people in treatment this month alone. >> reporter: helping local families suffering from this deadly drug that continues to spread like wildfire. officials say the arrest severed an artery in the distribution of the drug. families of victims say they're happy and focused on solving the problem of addiction with the fund-raisers, the next one is this coming saturday.

in norristown, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. in decision 2016 tonight, the republican presidential candidates are pushing their platforms on national tv for a final time before saturday's south carolina primaries. tonight cnn hosted the first of two town halls, ben carson, ted cruz and marco rubio answered questions of south carolina voters tonight. tomorrow, another town hall is happening with jeb bush, john kasich and donald trump. tonight, donald trump got the stage all to himself. in another town hall hosted by msnbc, trump said if he wins the nomination, he'll get more crossover votes of democrats than any other democrat ever and definitely win in pennsylvania you in a new national poll, trump is behind cruz. cruz has supporter of 28% of republican primary voters. trump gets 26% in this poll. marco rubio comes in third with 17%. john kasich has 11%.

this is a big reversal from this was leading cruz by 13 points. late supreme court justice antonin scalia will be laid to rest on saturday. we learned today president obama will not be there. instead, the commander in chief will pay respects on friday. in the great hall at the supreme court. vice president biden will attend the funeral at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. president obama vows to nominate a replacement for justice scalia before he leaves office. lagt tonight, we received word that president obama plans to visit cuba next month. the trip comes as cuba and the united states continue to build a stronger relationship. the white house plans a formal announcement tomorrow. in mexico tonight, a big sendoff for pope francis, now on the way back to rome after a five-day visit to the country. earlier, francis spent some time at the u.s.-mexico border, prayed for thousands of migrants died trying to reach the united

states. pope francis asked governments to open their hearts if not their borders to the human tragedy of forced migration. new at 11:00, a los angeles hospital paid nearly $17,000 in ransom to hacker who is hijacked the computer network. the ceo of hollywood presbyterian medical center said the quickest way to get the network back was to pay the ransom in bitcoin. the fbi is investigating the attack which is known as ransom-ware. a dominant, big five run for villanova this year. there's the big five champions. >> villanova's men's basketball team on top after beating temple tonight. >> this is a rivalry that dates back to the early 1900s. we have a look at how it's continued for so long. >> reporter: it's a crosstown rivalry. >> our city. it is our city.

at the door. >> burning mad. so-called fire chasers. the focus of a nbc 10 investigation exposing some companies' tactics. >> tonight, investigative reporter takes us to the fire and the woman that kicked the chasers off the porch. >> reporter: it was just another thursday in west philadelphia. >> fire reported. >> reporter: until geraldine's neighbor's house was ablaze. firefighters were not the only ones who came out to get a job done. >> first they started across the street. we were standing talking, watching the fire. >> reporter: fire chasers, some restoration companies and insurance adjusters also showed up to make a profit. >> reporter: and the chasers didn't just want business from the house on fire. they went to the neighbors like fitzgerald. >> i said if i had a gun i would put the gun -- aim it at the

door i said because you have no business doing this to people in the midst of their struggles and, you know, hard times. >> no one should have to sign a contract under duress. >> reporter: the members see firsthand what fire chasers can do. he says they sometimes get in the way of firefighters and can be aggressive towards fire victims. >> ridiculous. so we want people who are licensed by the city. >> reporter: philadelphia council woman blackwell introduced legislation that would require restoration companies to be licensed and get an official list. >> the city can know that they're licensed and legal and that they know what they're doing. >> reporter: michael o'leary tells us some companies are aggressive. and some have gotten in the way of the fire department but neither issues have happened often. o'leary says the business is misunderstood. >> there's a service that needs to be provided.

we're there to provide it. >> they were thriving off the back of innocent poor people. and i told them go to their own neighborhood. >> reporter: not all companies and insurance adjusters use these tactics. send us an e-mail to the nbc 10 investigators and share your stories. for the investigators, harry hairston, nbc 10 news. new at 11:00, the attorney for katherine knot is explaining why he think it is client should get a lighter sentence for her role in a gay bashing attack. she is sitting in a jail cell serving the sentence. she was convicted on four misdemeanor counts connected to the attack on a gay couple in center city back in 2014. her attorney is asking the judge to consider an alternative to just jail time. >> just, i'm asking the judge how that my client sits in a prison cell and had a taste of jail to consider alternatives

that may address the far reaching careach ing issues that the case dealt with. >> knot's attorney thinks it could be community service in the lgbt community. two men charged in the case pleaded guilty and sentenced to probation. tonight to remember loved ones lost to violence. they held a vigil. some of the parents in this group told us they will continue to seek justice for sons and daughters gunned down on philadelphia's streets. the university of pennsylvania welcomed caitlin jenner tonight as the spring speaker. jenner became one of the most well-known transgender celebrities after her transition last year. a delaware school district is apologizing tonight for what it calls an embarrassing mistake. >> yeah. staffer mistakenly sent an e-mail to parents poking fun at

whiners in wilmington with an attachment of the hurt feelings report and mocks whiners asking questions like is there permanent feeling damage? did you require tissues for your tears? district issued an apology saying a teacher got it from an outside source and accidentally attached it in an e-mail to parents. well, today, nice and dry compared to the last couple of days so pretty nice today. tomorrow will be a nice day, too. just colderment in the morning tomorrow, we are going to be in the 20s. by the afternoon, only in the 30s. but at least it will be nice and sunny so that will be a good thing. into the weekend, though, we are going to warm up so dry air will be here for the weekend and warmer temperatures. and one day we could get near 60 degrees. and then next week and a chance to see some snow moving back into the forecast. so i'll show you that in a second. in philadelphia, 37 degrees. lehigh valley already in the

upper 20s and some spots like allentown and pottstown. we are below freezing in millville. 32 in atlantic city. mid-30s for dover. all the numbers dropping overnight so expect to wake up with temperatures in the 20s. so here for the philadelphia area, at least, by about 7:00 a.m. right around 27 degrees and not really getting up to freezing until about lunchtime. so it's going to be a cold day tomorrow but don't worry. we'll be dry. right now, nice and dry, a few very light snow showers off to the west and northwest. not a big deal for us, though. we have the cold front to swing through early morning and high pressure to keep us dry pretty much to end out the week but there's a chance we could have a few showers very late friday. will not be a big deal. here's future weather. there's the colder air moving in. the high setting up keeping us dry tomorrow and most of the day friday and we'll see more clouds move in. friday more cloud cover.

maybe a couple of showers trying to move in. but not much. and then we go into saturday. warm front moves through. we warm up. dry saturday and temperatures near 60 degrees so that will be nice. even for sunday, staying nice and dry. this is a look at the next chance for snow. and then we'll watch going into tuesday and wednesday. wednesday will be the main day. so far it does look like we'll have an area of low pressure up the coast and getting part of the area rain. keeping on this track. so again, this is still seven days out but at this point it's hinting to snow across part of the area so, of course, keeping a close eye on that system. for tonight, though, clearing and colder, 26 for the low in philadelphia. 21, north and west. tomorrow highs only in the 30s. mid to upper 30s, a breezy, cold day and going to be sunny and so at least we have that. 44 degrees on friday. into the weekend. we're going to be warmer. there you see it. near 60 saturday. 57 on sunday. nice and dry. and then we go into next week

and enjoy your weekend because, you know, we have snow in the forecast next week and again a model i showed you one computer model showing some snow moving in and we will have to watch the track of that storm very closely and at this point we are expecting at least some kind of wintry weather in the forecast. >> the difference couldn't be bigger between this weekend and what we dealt with last weekend. >> yes. last couple of days and then today and then beautiful, warm weekend and we are going to keep going up and down. wenter is not over yet. >> oh no. >> everybody's head is spinning. well, the greatest show on earth is back in philadelphia tonight. ringling brothers and barnum brothers. last year for the the elephants. they're headed to a conservation center in florida. this move comes after several cities passed anti-elephant laws over concerns of animal cruelty. john? hey, big night for college basketball in philly. who would storm the court with an up sunset look at temple
