nbc 10 breaking news. and we begin with breaking news in fairmount park. a man is dead following this crash on martin luther king drive. skyforce 10 over the scene around 9:00 this morning. police tell us the man's car crossed the yellow lines and crashed head-on into another car. a woman and a child in that car have minor injuries. and here's another view of that crash from the ground. one of our producers actually sent us this photo showing both cars damaged. and a lot of drivers are avoiding mlk drive because of that accident. here's a live look at the schuylkill expressway into the city which runs parallel to mlk drive. you see there's some congestion there in the midday hours. let's get a check of the situation now for drivers at the nbc 10 first alert traffic

report jessica boyington. >> well, vai, we are on the upswing just a little bit from this accident scene that happened a few hours ago. so this is mlk drive right in here. you can see they have reopened it and they are allowing vehicles to move through. so giving that situation now that it is back open, starting to see a little bit of relief. earlier i was telling you to take your alternate kelly drive or schuylkill expressway and both of those were really backed up. as you can see now this is back open we will start to see some of that relief. checking out drive times you can see eastbound now we are back down. we were over an hour earlier this morning, now at 25 minutes from the blue route to the vine street expressway. pretty much a normal drive right now. a slow moving maintenance vehicle on 95 northbound with two left lanes blocked, so there's some congestion there. no congestion on 295 around this time right around 130 with a ramp closure from an earlier accident from 235 southbound,

vai. thank you, jessie. a gunman in an execution style murder is still on the loose. this happened in west philadelphia earlier today. investigators say the gunman opened fire at point-blank range and killed a man. the shooter ran off. the police are checking surveillance video as they try to come up with leads. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> little bit windy out there as you see here with this flag. and a little bit chilly as we take a live look at center city, philadelphia. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. but brilliant sunshine out there, glenn. >> yeah, quite a change from yesterday. we traded off the clouds for sunshine, but it's a whole lot colder. not a cloud in the sky. this is up in camelback in the pocono mountains. certainly plenty cold enough to be making snow. and they need to after all of the rain and ice and warm temperatures that they got. a lot of sunshine in and around the philadelphia area, but it is

a cold day. and it's pretty cold even for this time of the year. we have had a few clouds coming in from the north, but there's nothing on radar that would lead you to believe that there's going to be any kind of snow during the day today. certainly too cold for rain. it's only 30 in allentown, pottstown, reading. 27 in lancaster. 19 degrees in mt. pocono. with the wind it feels like it's 4 in the poconos and in the low to mid-20s across much of the rest of the area. so it is a windy day. it's a cold day. temperatures not really going much above the mid 30s, which is close to ten degrees below average. and then the wind starts to diminish tonight. we have another cold night ahead, but a huge warmup coming as we head towards the weekend. we'll see just how warm with the seven-day in a few minutes. see you then, glenn. take a look at this new video. it shows a suspect wanted for two recent robberies in the northeast.

surveillance cameras captured the man robbing a rising sun avenue smoke shop at gunpoint on january 5th. investigators think the same man held up an oxford avenue auto parts store 11 days later chl. if you happen to recognize this man youfr asked to call police. detectives are also hoping surveillance video can help them nab another robber in the oxford circle section of philadelphia. camera shows suspect using a gun to demand cash from a wawa worker last friday. after grabbing the money the gunman took off on foot. anyone who may have a clue about his identity should call authorities. and happening now, two members of the new castle county courthouse gunman's family are being sentenced for cyber stalking that resulted in the death. a judge is deciding the punishment were david matuseiwicz and his sister. they along with their mother were the first defendants in the u.s. to be convicted for cyber stalking after harassing david's

ex-wife christine belford. lanoer in a philadelphia hospital was sentenced to life in prison last week. her husband shot and killed belford and her friend as the two women walked into the courthouse for a child custody hearing two years ago. he died in the shootout with police. and happening today, a camden judge will hold a hearing on a speeding charge against sixers star okafor. his attorney says he's not sure if okafor will be there. police say the sixers top draft pick drove his white mercedes 108 miles an hour across the ben franklin bridge in october. and bill cosby is firing back at his accuser with a breach of contract lawsuit. the lawsuit names andrea constand, her lawyer and mother all part of -- constand has

accused cosby of drugging and molesting her in his montgomery county home in 2004. cosby is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the felony charges next month. the mummers will hold their mardi gras parade this weekend. and today we could learn more about some of the changes in the wake of controversy that marred the organization's new year's parade. the members to provide details today -- are expected to provide details today about the mardi gras parade. it's described as a family friendly celebration. the group's parade was marred by charges of homophobia and racism and the mayor called for changes to future parades. and these photos just in. state college firefighters rescued a dog trapped in this hole. the canine had been missing for two days when her owner found her at the bottom of this 15-foot hole. rescuers rigged a makeshift harness to lift the animal to safety. the fire company posted these

rescue photos on their facebook page. and from our delaware bureau a school district is apologizing for what it calls an embarrassing mistake. a staffer accidentally sent an e-mail to parents making fun of whiners. the e-mail came from lombardy elementary school in wilmington. it had an attachment called the hurt feelings report. it sarcastically mocked sensitive students asking questions like is there a permanent feeling damage? and did you require tissues for your tears? the district issued an apology saying a staff member got it from an outside source and accidentally attached it to an e-mail to parents. making history. president obama is getting set to do something no u.s. president has done since the 1920s. we'll have details straight ahead. and later, look who struck again. details on the latest arrest for a woman with a history of trying to sneak onto airplanes. glenn. it did feel more like winter today, but it's not going to be that way over the weekend.

that nomination. vice president biden is giving some insight into who the president wants to nominate to replace scalia. this morning in an interview biden said obama is looking for a candidate who's had past republican support. republicans have threatened to block an obama nominee which would give the decision over to his successor. and now to decision 2016 a new poll is pointing to a shakeup in the race for the republican presidential nomination. donald trump has been -- has fallen behind ted cruz in a new national poll from nbc and "the wall street journal." cruz has the support of 28% of republican primary voters while trump gets 26%. marco rubio is third with 17%. and john kasich is in fourth place with 11%. this is a big reversal from this same poll last month when trump led cruz by 13 points. right now trump is getting set to hold a rally at kiawah island in south carolina. this is a live look right now. he hasn't shown yet, but later

today he'll travel about four hours to gaffney, south carolina, for another campaign event there. and senator rubio is touting an endorsement from south carolina's governor, governor haley joined the candidate this morning at a town hall meeting in greenville. haley threw her support to rubio last night after several candidates had vied for her endorsement. rubio's fellow floridian jeb bush said he was disappointed he didn't get governor haley's support but there will be a role for her in his campaign if he wins the nomination. graham has endorsed bush. >> you can't do that -- >> hold on. >> i'm in the union now. >> a lighter moment on the trail for ohio governor john kasich. he grabbed a boom mike and briefly played the role of media member at his own campaign event in mt. pleasant, south carolina.

former vietnam war p.o.w. colonel thomas mo joined kasich to lend support. on the democratic side hillary clinton will hold a rally with labor leaders in las vegas. husband bill and daughter chelsea will join her for another rally tomorrow night. yesterday clinton campaigned in her native chicago as she highlighted the issue of gun safety reform. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> now today is a reminder that winter is not over. we get a little shot of this every once in a while, even in a pattern that it overall is not especially cold. we got a cold breeze during the day today, but what a turnaround we're going to have. a warm weekend. and then a storm next week that looks like it's going to bring at least rain and some high tides. and maybe some snow to parts of the area. flag's blowing around pretty hard. the wind is gusty.

33 degrees right now. the wind is 14 gusting to 24 miles an hour. it's 9 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. so, yeah, it is chilly. 30 degrees in pottstown, allentown, reading. only 31 in glassboro. mount holly. some warm spots only in the mid-30s, millville and atlantic city at 35 degrees. and as we go through the afternoon the temperature's not going up very much. maybe to the mid 30s. and then we start to drop back down into the 20s tonight. the wind will be diminishing tonight, so there won't be as much of a windchill. but we do have a northerly wind now. and it's sustained at 10 to 20 miles an hour. and we could be seeing gusts up to 30 miles an hour during the next several hours. the temperature change about 8 to 10 degrees colder than at this time yesterday. it wasn't exactly balmy yesterday. a few clouds coming in with that northerly flow but otherwise a

whole lot more sunshine than what we saw yesterday. and the radar once again is pretty quiet. but there are clouds back to the west. even a few snow showers up across wisconsin. so at the very least the clouds are going to be increasing during the day tomorrow. so we go through the afternoon once again mid-30s about as high as we can go. and some areas north and west are not even going to get to the freezing point. by 6:00 already back down into the 20s. and even in philadelphia by 11:00, 27 degrees. so, yeah, it's going to be a cold night. you're going to need the heat. and the coats tomorrow morning because look at these temperatures. low 20s in many parts of the area. then the clouds come in tomorrow prevent it from getting too much warmer. the atmosphere's trying to warm up tomorrow, but the clouds may interfere with that. generally dry. there could be a period of some light snow up towards the poconos during the afternoon. and then next week the storm we've been talking about does

look like it's going to come up the coast and be another one of those nor'easters. and we have the problem with the moon phase again adding to any potential coastal flooding. now, the latest models having the track very, very close to the coast, which would push the snow farther inland and give less chances of snow accumulation in much of our region. we'll get updates on that this afternoon with brand new computer models. temperatures only for the mid-30s today with sunshine and the wind gusting up to 30 miles an hour. not quite as cold tomorrow after a very chilly start. and then look what happens over the weekend. way up into the 50s to near 60 degrees on saturday. we could see some showers by sunday night. and then next week not quite as warm with that coastal system that we're going to be of course updating this afternoon. all right. thank you, glenn. problem at the pump. a hidden device could end up

ground. this is a picture that was actually sent to us by one of our producers driving by the area at the time. here's a look now at the scene. mlk drive is reopened after being closed for several hours while police conducted their investigation. there had been extra volume on the schuylkill expressway, but it looks like it's moving along pretty well now. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. sunny and windy conditions at the shore this morning as we take a live look at the beach from our camera atop the marquee delafayette hotel in cape may, new jersey. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. glenn, it is probably the coldest day for the next four or five, right? >> oh, yeah. it may be the coldest day for another week or more. and it's really going to be different than this as we head through the weekend. a bright blue sky out there. the flag's blowing pretty hard. we've got wind, we've got cold. but at least we have sunshine

out there. of course the traffic is moving just fine without any kind of weather issues. that's for sure. and it's going to stay that way all day. we just have a few clouds around. a lot more sunshine than what we've been seeing lately. and certainly nothing on the radar right now. and that may be changing as we head through the next several days. the temperature not even to the freezing mark in parts of the area, like allentown, pottstown, reading, trenton, mount holly, all below freezing. philadelphia is just barely above at 33 degrees. and when you combine the temperature and the wind, it's not going to be feeling like it's more than about 26, 27 degrees this afternoon. that's at the warmest. and tonight with still a little bit of wind it's going to be feeling like it's closer to 20 degrees during the evening. but big changes we head toward the weekend. we'll talk more about that and a storm for next week with the seven-day in a few minutes.

all right. thank you, glenn. tech industry leaders are showing support for an apple -- for apple in its fight against a court order to hack into a phone used by one of the san bernardino shooters. apple says the move could jeopardize the security of every iphone. nbc's miguel almaguer has more on the debate. >> we have several down in the conference room. several down. >> reporter: two months after the terror attack that left 14 dead in san bernardino, the iphone used by gunman syed farook is setting off a debate over privacy and security. >> i can see the fbi's point. but you can also see apple's point of view. >> reporter: with fbi investigators unable to unlock the popular 5c like this one, a federal judge has ordered apple to create new software to unlock the iphone. a system to bypass security functions so it can be scoured for evidence. >> just as we serve people,

lives are lost and i feel strongly that that's the moral thing to do. >> reporter: apple outraged by the terror attacks as they've been assisting the fbi with plans to fight the judge's order. in an open letter ceo tim cook says creating a, quote, back door to bypass encryption is something he says they do not have. and something we consider too dangerous to create. privacy advocates say building a master key to bypass security will be exploited. and puts your privacy at risk. google's ceo also weighed in on the issue wednesday tweeting, we give law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders, but that's wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices and data. could be a troubling precedent. the fbi believes they'll lose the phone's data permanently after ten failed attempts to open it and says they're running out of options. for family members of the victims like arlen who lost his

wife, there is no debate. >> when you're dealing with national security, that should come first. people's lives matter. >> that was nbc's miguel almaguer reporting. well, a woman with a history of sneaking onto airplanes is facing charges again. chicago police arrested marilyn hartman at o'hare international airport yesterday. a judge released hartman on probation last year and ordered her to avoid airports. she's due in bond court today. hartman tried to board planes without a ticket numerous times in recent years. and succeeded at least once in 2014. an alabama school bus bursts into flames moments after the driver got all the students off safely. video shows the flames and plumes of black smoke rising from the bus in the town of mobile. the driver stopped immediately when he noticed smoke coming from the engine. >> you could actually feel the heat from the bus burning. then it just all of a sudden went through the engine and then the whole bus engulfed in

flames. >> while everyone is thankful the students and bus driver are safe, some are questioning the school's transportation policies because the bus was picked up from mechanics just hours before it caught fire. and boxer manny pacquiao says he respects nike's decision to cut ties with him following his controversial remark about same-sex couples. pacquiao recently apologized after he told an interviewer that same-sex couples were, quote, worse than animals. nike called the comments abhorrent. he's also a two-time congressman in native philippines where same-sex is illegal. an arizona neighborhood is buzzing over fly infestation. take a look at this. they're called midge flies. and they have overtaken a phoenix community. pest control sprayed to kill these tiny flies, but they continue to pester homeowners. some say the problem is so bad they can't go outside at dusk when the flies are more active.

and tumble weed takeover down under. a fast growing weed known as hairy panic has swallowed a street in the rural part of australia. the weed is clogging homes and causing frustration for residents there. the tumble weed has been around the town for a couple years, but the dry conditions have made this year's invasion the worst. and happening now, the fcc commissioners are voting on a proposal that could change the way you watch tv. they're deciding whether to unlock set-top cable boxes to allow competition from device makers and app designers. one commissioner says the plane would give consumers more choice and open the market to alternate set-top box providers. toyota is recalling close to 3 million suvs because of a seat belt problem. the recall covers 2005 to 2014 rav4 suvs, like you see here. toyota says in a crash a part in

the metal seat belt frame could damage the seat belt. if that happens, the belts could be cut and would not restrain passengers. problem at the pump, you probably heard of skimming devices that thieves attach to the card reader. well, this way they can steal your credit card information and now gas stations in our area are getting alerts about a new way thieves are accessing your card and possibly your money. nbc 10's matt delucia explains how and what you can look for. >> reporter: filling up your car is designed to be easy. in and out in a few minutes. on the go with a full tank. you would not intentionally leave your credit card behind, but that's what's happening to some customers. >> i don't want anybody stealing my hard earned money. >> we've seen in the past 10, 12 months a real explosion in skimmer devices. >> reporter: it's the kind of thing bucks county's director of consumer protection hates to think about, skimmer devices look like this.

thieves attach them to atms, gas pumps, anything with a card reader. once you swipe, your info is instantly copied and used in illegal ways. >> it would attach right there. >> reporter: bucks county's bureau of waits and measures inspects some 9,000 gas pumps every year. we followed one day last week as sealers chris and john conducted random checks at three stations on busy street road in bensalem. >> first thing we look at is the credit card reader. they unhook this, they attach their device, close it up. you would never even know it. >> reporter: all right, so how are thieves getting inside the pump? they're using a commonly found master key or they're picking the lock. how long would it take somebody to get in here and attach something like that? >> well, if they have the keys, it took me two minutes, maybe three minutes. >> i did not know -- >> reporter: this sunoco station for one uses security tape that

would show the owner and customers if it's been tampered with. how often do you check the pump? >> i check like every day. >> reporter: at all three stations we found no skimmers. but at one of them something else. >> i was surprised and a bit disappointed. >> reporter: at this b.p. station the pumps were on and accepting cards, but there was no attendant to be found. >> scammers would love to come into that station and put one of the skimming devices in there because it would be easy to get in and out without anyone spotting you. >> today with bluetooth and everything else, they can sit across the street over in that parking lot, they get the information they need and they move on to the next one. >> reporter: without you ever knowing. >> somebody should be checking to see if there's something on these devices. >> reporter: and this is the alert issued by bucks county to gas station owners last month. now, they have yet to find one of these skimming devices inside a gas pump, but they say this is a growing problem in other states. they just want people to know about it now.

popular board games ever made, but you can say good-bye to the banker in the newest version of monopoly. hasboro's new game called monopoly ultimate banking game eliminates paper money as well as the banker position. instead players scan special bank cards and a handheld banking unit. knew it was going to come to this. monopoly of course is based on the real life streets of atlantic city. you can soon get your hands on some of oprah's dresses or jewelry and her shoes for as little as 99 cents. the former talk show queen cleaned out her closet and she'll auction off items on e-bay starting march 1st. the items come from oprah's closet at her harpo studios in chicago closing after 25 years. all the proceeds go to the oprah winfrey leadership academy for girls. a brand new theater production in philadelphia is bringing the written word to life on stage. the american premiere of spine is a heartwarming, funny and defiant love song to libraries.

here with us is the director of spine and the literary manager as well as derek grayer, director of the rosenbach of the free library of philadelphia. thank you very much for being here. tell us about the production and what makes this production so unique? >> it's a beautiful piece. it's an english play by a young female play write clara brennan. it's a one-woman show. and it's about a young woman who comes from a poor part of london and doesn't really have access to much in her life. her life is a lot about surviving. and she befriends an elderly woman who has a house full of stolen books. and through their friendship she grows into herself. and she becomes the adult she should be. and a big part of that is this elderly woman's love of books and literature. >> fascinating. derek, tell us why the free library of philadelphia decided to partner with the theater for this production. >> we love partnering with any number of organizations

throughout the city, but when you create a play that's a love song to libraries, you got our number. we want to be there. and theater went beyond that and came up with a tremendous promotion. said if you bring a new childrens book to the play and donate it, that book will go to the free library so it can be used by children throughout the city. and you will get a discount on the show for making a donation. >> wow. fantastic. this is a great theater city. >> it is. >> tell me how this play is impacting the theater community. >> well, we open friday, so i still kind of have to learn how it's going to impact. but i'm hopeful that the action we're taking with the free library, the fact that we're practicing what we preach in the show will be a trend that more and more theater companies take on. not just to do a show that has a message, but to act on that message in the programming that surrounds it. >> i know the free library often brings -- hosts different folks that come in and speak, but is

we'll provide a link there for you, make it a little easier. thank you so much. good luck. thank you for coming in. >> thank you so much. >> our pleasure. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. well, today is clearly the coldest day of the week. good for skiers out on blue mountain. they were able to make snow. they need to because of all the rain and warm weather that they had in the earlier portion of the week with that storm. we've got a cold breeze across the entire region, but it's going to turn into a warm breeze as we head through the weekend. and we got a storm next week with combination of rain and snow but also some bad timing because it's near the full moon and we could have some coastal issues again. we have bright sunshine out there right now. 33 degrees. the wind 14. gusts to 24 miles an hour. feels like it's 23 out there right now. and as we go through the afternoon you can see the temperature really not going up

a whole lot. and by 11:00 tonight all the way back down to 26 degrees. and a little bit of wind making it feel even colder than that. right now it's 19 in mt. pocono. we've got a north wind out there, 28 degrees in coatesville and quakertown, 29 in doylestown. even with bright sunshine. so that's a cold air mass that's on top of us. 29 in kennett square. 31 in washington township and mount holly, trenton. 32 in wrightstown. and 35 in millville. 34 in dover. 38 woodbien. that's the warm spot right now. the cold spot of course mount pocono, it feels like it's 4. 23 for the windchill in philadelphia. and wildwood 28. that's about the warmest spot at least as far as the way it feels. there's that northwest wind. it's gusting up to 20 to 30 miles an hour across much of the area. and that's going to be the case this afternoon and even few

little clouds that have been around just keep racing right out of the area. but there's a lot more cloudiness back to the west. so i certainly expect more clouds during the day tomorrow than what we're seeing today. but there's still very little precipitation. so little bit of light snow up in northern wisconsin. some of that could end up grazing the poconos late tomorrow. you can see the temperatures this afternoon not really going very far, staying below freezing north and west. and of course going closer to 20 degrees overnight tonight. there's 19 degrees by 6:00 a.m. and then tomorrow it's not quite as cold as today, but we have clouds so not exactly going to be a balmy day. it's over the weekend that we warm up. and next week looks like we're going to get some sort of a coastal storm, a nor'easter. you can see the northeast wind there. the problem is monday is a full moon and the tides would be high

anyway, you add in an onshore wind and you can have some coastal concerns. if it tracks right close to the coast like this particular model was showing, then the snow would be pretty far to the north and west. so that the main issue would be perhaps at the coast with the coastal flooding potential. sunny, windy and cold this afternoon. the high temperature only in the mid-30s. and it's not even going to feel like that because of the wind. tomorrow not quite as cold but more clouds around after a cold start. and then the temperature just jumps up over the weekend. 59 degrees on saturday. 57 sunday. chance of some showers by sunday night. it's not really going to ruin the daytime hours on the weekend. and then next week we're starting off warm enough for the storm to start as rain. and it will just depend on the track as to whether it changes to snow. more on that coming up this afternoon as the new data comes in. and we'll be right back.
