donald trump wins the first in the south primary. >> let's put this thing away. and let's make america great again! and hillary clinton takes nevada. >> the fight goes on. the future that we want is within our grasp. our live team decision 2016 coverage starts now. >> good evening. i'm rosemary connors. donald trump's win tonight ramps up his momentum. south carolina has picked the republican nominee in all but one election since 1980. he scored a commanding victory tonight, picking up 33% of the primary votes. marco rubio finished in second place with 23%. and ted cruz rounds out the top three with 22%. in nevada, hillary clinton is celebrating a narrower victory tonight. she picked up 53% of the vote compared to bernie sanders at 47%. nbc 10 national correspondent steve handelsman has reaction from tonight's winners and

losers. >> reporter: it's the second victory in a row for the national republican frontrunner, donald trump's first in the south. >> when you win it's beautiful. and we're going to start -- we are going to start winning for our country. let's go. let's have a big win in nevada. let's have a big win at the s.e.c. let's put this thing away! but as they cast their ballots, mainstream republicans flocked to marco rubio, powering the 44-year-old's comeback from fifth in new hampshire. >> tonight here in south carolina the message is pretty clear. this country is now ready for a new generation of conservatives to guide us into the 21st century. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: ted cruz kept his spot in the top tier of three. >> we are the only campaign that has beaten and can beat donald trump. >> reporter: jeb bush finished far down in fourth and quit the race with a parting shot. >> we put forward detailed, innovative conservative plans to

address the mounting challenges that we face. because despite what you might have heard, ideas matter, policy matters. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: in nevada, hillary clinton lost her once big lead in the polls but still won. >> i am so, so thrilled and so grateful to all of my supporters out there. some may have doubted us, but we never doubted each other! [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: union leaders had push add big democratic caucus turnout, which helped nullify bernie sanders's late surge. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, columbia, south carolina. >> after his loss in nevada, senator bernie sanders spoke about looking ahead to the democratic national convention here in philadelphia this summer. and he's predicting an upset. >> i believe that when democrats assemble in philadelphia in july at that convention, we are going to see the results of one of the

great political upsets in the history of the united states. [ cheers and applause ] >> tonight we spoke to political experts and voters about how this presidential election could be one for the history books. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal will have that story coming up at 11:15. new at 11:00, a man is in the hospital tonight after a staircase collapsed beneath him in old city philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene at the vest tricondominiums on church street tonight. he injured his leg when the stairs gave way underneath him. he was trapped until firefighters could free him. officials with licenses and inspections were called to investigate. also new at 11:00, there is a call for action by the union representing new jersey corrections officers. this after reports of inmates attacking officers. union officials tell us it's happened to four corrections officers at new jersey prisons

in recent weeks. they sent us these pictures ofsome of the alleged injuries. the union wants state lawmakers to pass a bill that would establish a compensation program for certain law enforcement officers injured while performing their official dutie duties. hundreds rallied in philadelphia's chinatown today demonstrators took to the streets of center city to protest the conviction of nypd officer peter liang. liang was convicted of manslaughter in the 2014 accidental shooting death of an unarmed man in brooklyn. protesters believe that liang's con springs was unjust and the result of social pressure along with political influence. >> what is injustice for the victim cannot be made better by more injustice done to a young police officer. it's the society that should do

better. >> protesters tell us the new york police department did not give liang proper and adequate training. this protest was one of dozens that happened across cities today in support of officer liang. now to our first alert weather. the ice was packed tonight at the blue cross river rink on penn's landing. skaters didn't have to bundle up too much as the mild temperatures made for a nice night out. we check in now with meteorologist violetta yos. more warm weather on the horizon, right? >> reporter: that's right. and current temperatures are still looking good after most of the area reached the lower 60s this afternoon. still into the mid 40s toward philadelphia, 53 toward potstown, 59 toward melville. 53 dover, poconos near 50 degrees. a very far cry from the 30 below wind chills we were talking about right around this time last we're week. we're looking at a 24-hour temperature change of 22 degrees toward the poconos, 13 in allentown, a 19-degree

difference in potstown, 7 degrees in philadelphia. of so even more dramatic changes to the north across the higher elevations. we keep things dry during the overnight hours but tracking some rain into tomorrow. 9:00 a.m. still looking dry with increased cloud cover to the north. your planner for south jersey and delaware into the mid 50s by the afternoon. also looking warm as we head into the afternoon toward the i-95 corridor. heading northward we'll increase the clouds through the course of the morning and afternoon. 8:00 a.m. temperatures north and west around 39 degrees. we're looking at mid 40s by the afternoon hours. again we are tracking a disturbance that is going to bring us rainfall around lunch time. it looks like that rain could continue into the first part of your sunday night. we'll take a look at that straight away in my first alert seven-day forecast. we have new information tonight on a deadly condo fire in burlington county, new jersey. we're learning more about the woman found dead on her couch hours after firefighters put out the flames. the woman's family became worried when they saw reports of

the fire here on nbc 10 and hadn't heard from their relative. nbc 10's andrea kline thomas explains. >> reporter: a stillness fell over the florence toll gate condominiums as firefighters removed the body of 72-year-old irene thorn villian from her charred unit. >> she was a kind-hearted person. she loved animals, loved people, loved her family. she went out of her by for everybody. >> reporter: skyforce 10 captured the scene after 9:30 friday night. flames were billowing out of the building by the time firefighters had arrived. part of the roof had already collapsed. residents were running for their lives. >> the structural soundness of the building made it tough for the firemen to get in there. >> reporter: it wasn't until this morning that lisa reid was watching nbc 10 and first learned about the fire. she recognized the building. no one had heard from her aunt. >> lisa called the hospital, called the red cross. i kept calling everywhere. they said no, we don't have her.

>> reporter: with daylight firefighters returned to the scene and did another search of the building. reid says they found her aunt on the couch. she was posupposedly in good health. investigation continues to determine a cause and find out why the victim was unable to escape from the flames. >> i had to come back for my own peace of mind. i have to see it again. six people were injured in the fire including three first responders. as of tonight one person remains in the hospital with a broken heel. reporting in florence township, i'm andrea kline thomas, nbc 10 new news. i think it's pretty slim. but it's always worth a shot. >> a shot at fame and maybe fortune. but you've got to have the voice. details on when and where you can try out this weekend in our area. i'm danny pommel. villanova and st. joe's seemed destined for the big dance but one of them took a stumble today. don't miss what went down on a crazy night in toronto. it ended with another good ghost

hey, if you've got the voice, now is your chance to try out. hundreds lined up in center city philadelphia today to audition. the popular nbc reality show is holding tryouts this weekend at the pennsylvania convention center. more contestants will get their chance tomorrow. the doors open at the convention center at 7:00 a.m. season ten of "the voice" premiers february 29th right here on nbc 10. ♪ the weather really couldn't have been any better for the mummers today. the band division strutted down main street for their second annual mardi gras celebration.

the crowd got a front row seat to the glitter, the feathers and of course the music. >> it's a wonderful parade. it's an easy parade. the people are great along streets. it's packed just like on new year's day. that's what fires us up collectively. >> the parade is a fundraising effort for the string bands that rely on donations to help pay for their costumes and sets. [ cheers ] they made a splash to benefit the environment. they couldn't have picked a better weekend to take this polar plunge. >> that's right. and temperatures actually stay well above normal as we head into tomorrow. but we've also got some rain on the way as we wrap up the weekend. i'll have the details coming up in my first alert seven-day forecast.

in decision 2016 tonight, a close win for hillary clinton in the nevada caucus. she picked up about 53% of the vote compared to 47% for bernie sanders. maybe even a bigger victory for donald trump in the south carolina primary. this evening we spoke to political experts and voters about how this race for the white house has become one to expect the unexpected. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal continues our decision 2016 coverage. he joins us live from the digital operation center. randy? >> reporter: rosemary, in you just a few months philadelphia will become the center of the political universe. the democratic national convention coming to town. and ahead of that, one local museum is putting together a brand-new exhibit showing voters the history of the race to the white house. ♪ >> reporter: to winter the white house you've got to have a compelling campaign.

>> i accept your summons. >> reporter: at the national constitution center. >> you have to have a strong, firm grip. >> reporter: matthew riff shows us how it's done. he runs the new exhibit here, the history of presidential politics. they've got an abe lincoln campaign flag. a bobby kennedy button. >> we will take a look at the evolution of the process of how presidents have campaigned for the office. >> reporter: and this year's campaign might be one for the history books with a surge of outsider anti-establishment candidates. >> it's a total like new wave election, i think. >> reporter: we caught up with this group of democrats conflicted between choosing an outsider like bernie or an insider like hillary. >> i think she's a creature of the system, whereas bernie is kind of like an outsider candidate. >> it feels like a big paradigm shift no matter what. but i haven't decided which direction i would like to go for that. >> reporter: with the dnc coming to philly this summer, voters are hoping the issues they care about take center stage at the

end of the exhibit you can write a post it note with your most important issue. >> i want to make education great again. we work in the schools in philadelphia. and it's really hard to watch the state that they're in right now. >> reporter: voters hoping their voice is heard as the country once again chooses its next president. >> that exhibit, by the way, runs through the november election. nbc 10 and telemundo 62 are proud sponsors. meantime, voters here in pennsylvania have about two months to make up their minds. the primary here is in late april. live from the digital operations center, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. today's warmer weather certainly took the edge off of this polar plunge in chester county. dozens rushed in to take a dunk in the brandiwine creek in westchester today. each plunger raised money for the brandywine red clay aliners which works to protect natural resources. now your nbc 10 first alert weather.

>> the beautiful start to the weekend and it looks like temperatures will actually remain quite mild as we head into tomorrow. but of course we are also tracking some rainfall for the second part of your sunday. we've got showers that are going to be approaching. the first part of the day not looking too bad. another storm system that's going to bring us additional wet weather that's mostly going to be for next week. the overall pattern not looking too bad. 46 in philadelphia right now, 53 towards pots town, 49 degrees toward the poconos. still in the mid 50s here toward a good chunk of delaware extending into wildwood and atlantic city. the next couple of hours the temperature not going to be dropping a whole lot. again tonight looking very very comfortable after reaching the lower 60s for today. even as we head into the 7:00 a.m. time frame, lower 40s. again just such a big difference in just one week. now again we're starting to seat beginnings of our band of rain that's going to move in as we head into tomorrow. you can see some rain on the flooufr right across st. louis.

we keep things dry the next couple of hours. but you can see the overall trend here is to shift east and not necessarily northward. this is mainly going to be an impact for areas from philadelphia extending southward. sunday 2:00 p.m. still dry, warm temperatures into the 50s. again it's later in the day that the showers start to move in. it's not going to be one big solid area of rainfall. so overall if you are going to head out and about grab that umbrella as you head out the door. monday 3:00 a.m. things start to clear out. it looks like this will be long gone by the morning rush on monday. the good thing is we're not looking at a drastic temperature drop behind this although it will certainly be cooler as we head into monday. temperatures will really just be rebounding back to normal after the excessive warmth we've had in place over the last 24 hours. mid 40s in philadelphia, 37 degrees the low toward the north and west as we head into tomorrow. still looking warm, but again rain starts to develop mostly in the afternoon as temperatures actually remain into the 50s. overall sunday not looking too bad especially not early. things clear out as we head into monday.
