valley or the poconos. tornado watch means conditions are favorable for some tornados to form inside this watch area. if a tornado is sighted or detect by radar, a tornado warning would be issued. right now we have some showers moving rapidly from south to north across the area but the heavy stuff is not that far away. at least the first patch coming up rapidly toward washington. severe weather by norfolk and other severe storms back to the west. these are tornado warnings in effect now. still pretty far away from our area. but as everything shifts up to the northeast, over the next ewr hours the tornado threat is real tonight. not often around here, but tonight is one of those nights. hail, threat is moderate, lightning and damaging wind is the main threat that we're likely to see even without a

tornado you can get damaging winds. right now wind gusts that were over 40 miles an hour in central delaware during the past few minutes. and that will increase as well. let's talk about where all of the severe weather is going with sheena parveen. >> the rest of evening and into tonight, tornado watch is up until 11:00 p.m. tonight. here's a look at future weather. through the next hour, here's 5:00 p.m. notice reds and oranges that is heavy rain, potentially thunderstorms, and then go through one more hour, 6:00 p.m. here. you notice some of this moving away. but more moving in from the south, south jersey and delaware. notice this line of storms to our west. this line right now that you see by 6:00 p.m. approaching that does exist currently. it is far away but it will be approaching by 6:00 p.m. that line could have very strong

winds as well. now we get closer to 7:00, 8:00, part of the area could be in a break. but notice that line of storms again. approaching areas of redding, lancaste lancaster, lehigh valley. now looking at 9:00 here. that's line of storm approaches philadelphia. we could have more developing through south jersey and delaware at the same time. these could be strong to severe, cannot rule out an isolated tornado. by 10:00, continuing. it's not going to end until after midnight. threat for severe storms, isolated tornadoes will stay in the forecast through the rest of the evening and midnight. then more clear moving in. coming up, a closer looked stor around and update on timing of this. same storm bearing down on our region caused destruction here in the south.

startling announcement from pennsylvania's governor. tom wolf revealed he's going through a personal health battle. >> my wife and i recently found out i have a mild case of prostate cancer. >> his wife francis sat by his side. his cancer is treatable and will not interfere with his duties as gofr. >> he will start agreement in coming weeks but did not say what type of treatment he will receive. lauren mayk with more on wolf's announcement and the type of cancer he's fighting. >> this type of cancer is very common, in fact, there's a good chance you know at least one person who had had it. the probability goes up, as you get older and one doctor explained to me, as men live longer there are more cases. governor wolf is 6. he say -- 67 he wanted come forward to be open but also show

a regular checkup can make a difference. >> reporter: governor wolf's announcement came with his wife by his side. >> i feel more than hopeful. >> reporter: with an assurance. >> i'm not going to be incapacitated by this. >> reporter: the prostate cancer was caught early after a routine checkup. >> 1 in 6 men will have prostate cancer. in any ram there's someone with prostate cancer. >> reporter: dr. david chen tells me how this diagnosis has changed over the years. do people actually have a better prognosis today? >> the overall prognosis for prostate cancer is very good and 99% of men will be alive in five years. find out prostate cancer, regardless of the stage. >> reporter: take carlos, healthy at 55, diagnosed six years ago. >> scared to death. i didn't know what to think. i didn't think it was any probability of in ever coming into my life cancer, i never thought about that.

trying to drive away from tornadoes. so, if there are any that develop over the next several hours, last thing you want to do is get in your car, try to yo h outrun it. don't let anybody you know do that either. tornado watch for 11:00. does not include lehigh valley or poconos. tornado watch means conditions overall favorable for some to form in the watch area. also see severe thunderstorms, winds 5,000 feet above the ground are hurricane force. so, it's not going to take much to get some of the winds down to the ground and cause damage. tornado threat is actually in the moderate range. around here, that's very unusual. maybe a couple days a year i would put that in the moderate risk. hail and moderate risk, lightning threat is high. but take a few hours. and the damaging wind threat is very high. expect to leave some damage

before this night is over. you can see lighter showers across philadelphia area, but heavier stuff by washington, and chesapeake bay. everything's moving very rapidly because the winds high up are so strong. just to give you an idea, this cluster here, if it continued on its track, would be to wilmington, around 5:50, philly, after 6:00. so, we're not talking about an immediate threat in the next hour, let's say. but eventually, some of this moisture, instability, this in line of thunderstorms, will be headed in our direction. all of these red areas there, those are current tornado warnings. we have some in central virginia, and also by chesapeake bay. this one is moving at 55 miles an hour. again, extrapolating it, if it would continue to hold together, it would take until after 6:00 to hit milford, delaware, 6:30,

cape may. not an immediate threat. conditions are favorable for some of this to come in. hour by hour, you can see the first batch coming from washington, quickly. that may not be the main area. that will be this line back to the west. so often we have one line that comes through and the threat is over. this time we may have a couple of them, and this second one may be the strongest. that's 7:00. you can see, solid line, purple indicating heavy rain moving into philadelphia through bucks and montgomery, northern delaware, around 8:00, 9:00 tonight. and it holds together. if that line holds together, there may be numerous reports of 50 plus-mile-an-hour-wind gusts, maybe stronger than that. toward midnight, we get out of this mess. right now, it is 60 degrees in

right now, 4:30, on nbc 10, a rocky weather night coming our way. first alert radar tracking a powerful storm poised to move in. it's already killed several people to our south. now a tornado watch is in place for our area. here's a live picture of the philadelphia skyline. you can see the tops of the buildings vanishing into the fog. heavy rain, dangerous winds will be here soon.

this same storm system taking its toll in the south. this video just in from mississippi where a tornado killed a man in his home. we learned two people have died in eastern virginia. two others were killed in louisiana. five deaths are blamed on this line of weather. now the storm is headed our way. team of meteorologists tracking the storm and impacts we could see. >> first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. big changes coming in the next few hours. >> changes happened rapidly because the storms themselves, individual storms, moving 50 to 60 miles an hour. and the overall system is moving even faster. so, we have a rainy day out there, we have a gusty wind out of the south. it's warm, that's one of the ingredients in creating severe thunderstorms. we have a tornado watch that is in effect for much of the area. just south of allentown, all of delaware, that's until 11:00 tonight. what that means is that

conditions are favorable, some time during that period. all the way. until 11:00 tonight for some tornados to form within this yellow area. so, we're not expecting tornadoes everywhere, even if there's one, that verifies that watch area. but even if there's one, we got to warn you about it and let you know where it is and where it's going. and when that happens. right now, things are fairly quiet. yellows and reds back to the bottom of 0 the screen, toward washington, that's indicating heavy storms. there's one right up chesapeake bay, that red and you see lightning bolts with that. the most powerful part of the system in western virginia. we have several tornado warnings. tornado warnings in effect right now. still a long way away from the area. not talking about immediate

threat in the next hour. overall threat of tornadoes is moderate. a hail threat moderate, lightning threat high, damaging wind threat is pretty high, too. where are the storms going to do? sheena parveen has a closer look at that time line. >> that's right. as glenn mentioned, storms are quick movers. we are going to see things changing rapidly through the evening and tonight. expect this to be changing every hour. future weather. as we go into 5:00 p.m. storms moving, mostly to the north and northeast. this is an area where we expect heavy rain, strong gusty winds, lightning possibly around the philadelphia area by 5:00 p.m. towards bucks county, south jersey, burkes county, i should say. closer to 6:00 p.m., you see more storms moving up north and west of philadelphia. there's that line of storms off to the west. strong line that glenn showed you. that line, we do expect

next 2 1/2 hours. get the latest forecast on the nbc 10 app. pennsylvania governor tom wolf tops they'd li s head lean he has prostate cancer. the cancer was caught early and won't affect his ability to govern. he'll begin treatment in the next couple of weeks. >> i'm convinced, by people who have looked at this and by other people, that i've gotten this early on, it's very imminently treatable. >> the governor will take a short vacation before treatment begins. the governor's cancer discovered during a routine medical exam. >> he stressed importance of getting regular collectups. joining us, dr. justin harmon, a prostate cancer specialist from saint mary medical center in bucks county. thank you for being with us. first, how is prostate cancer diagnosed? and what does the governor mean when he says it's an early diagnosis? we hear about the different stages. do we know where this falls?

>> well, they haven't commented much on his actual stage, but prostate cancer's detected by a few methods, one psa screening, which is a simple blood test. the other being an examination which involves digital rectal examination. if either of those are abnormal, the patient undergoes a biopsy and that's how prostate cancer's detected. >> governor says he's going to continue working that he can do that, as he undergoes treatment. this won't affect his ability to do his job? >> the various treatments for prostate won't impact immediate quality of life. whether it's radiation or surgery, most patients can proceed with regular work activity throughout either treatment. >> according to pennsylvania medical society, 28 men in the state are diagnosed with cancer every day. why is that number so high, 28 every day? and do we know what causes prostate cancer?

>> we know that prostate cancer can run in families, risk factors include first-degree relative such as father or brother. and the more of those in your family, the higher your risk. we don't know, how far, what causes prostate cancer. the second part of the question, i'm sorry? >> we don't know what causes it. but why is that number so high, 28 every day in pennsylvania diagnosed. >> right. we are diagnosing quite a bit of prostate cancer but as the guidelines for treatment change, we're treating less prostate cancer ironically. not all prostate cancers are life threatening and that's an understanding patients need to have. who undergoes screening. that's something to talk to their physician about. screening and diagnosing prostate cancer doesn't necessarily mean you require treatment. >> really important to know family history and get regular checkups.

going to arave here. >> yes, everything moving rapidly, winds higher up in atmosphere are extremely strong. jet stream fueled by that record el nino in the pacific. you can trace some of this all the way back there. tornado watch in effect for our area until 11:00 tonight. so some time between now and 11:00 when conditions are most favorable for some tornados to form. when you see that damage, that covers a small area. tornados do not travel far, they're not wide. but if you get a line of thunderstorms you can get widespread wind damage without the actual circulation of a tornado. a moderate risk of tornadoes in the area over the next several hours which is unusually high for this part of the country. the lightning risk is high. and damaging wind threat is high. just because there's so much

wind up in the atmosphere, just a few thousand feet up, and it doesn't take much to bring it down to the ground. some of the showers through the area. a ban of heavier, heavier rain coming up, including thunderstorm coming up chesapeake bay. moving 55 miles an hour. and it would be around newark, delaware, 5:30, chester itself, about 5:50, wilmington, 5:40. this the line the most powerful and dangerous part of the whole system. and that is what we're going to have to be watching hour for hour. the one cell that's producing tornado now, if it would imagine to hold, it would take three hours to get into our area. but look at all of these warnings. all of the red, those are all tornado warnings in effect right now, the orange areas are severe thunderstorm warnings. it's all with that one line. so that's the most dangerous part. so we're going to get heavy

rain, thunderstorms moving through within the next hour. so that stuff coming from washington fast. this line, again most dangerous, and that is coming in later on. and it's coming in, it's going to affect the entire area. everybody's going to get rain. everybody's going to get a gusty wind. some folks are going to get 70-mile-an-hour-gusts, others 50 miles an hour, and ta will mean the difference according to the damage. you can see, 9:00, that line coming through bucks county, philadelphia, in through central delaware. once that line moves through, conditions will improve. it's going to stay warm all night. that's for sure. certainly past midnight hour. and may be a few showers around tomorrow, but nothing on the severe side. now the temperatures are pretty amazing for this time of the year. 62 pottstown. also only 45 in allentown.

this is nbc 10 news first alert weather. >> right now, 5:00, first alert weather team tracking storms on the nbc 10 radar. tornado watch issued for many parts of the area tonight. that system could bring severe thunderstorms and damaging winds. this is a live look at cape may, where you can see rain has started to fall. we have seen showers throughout the day, but stronger storms now moving in. >> right to our team of meteorologists. they have more on the timing of all of this and what storms can bring to your neighborhood. >> chief meteorology glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> storms are moving rapidly toward your neighborhood, one way you can tell, look how this camera is shaking. it takes a lot of wind to do that. the winds, a few thousand feet

up, even stronger. and they do a couple of things. pushes the storms and moves them or way faster, and it also, when you get a thunderstorm, allows wind to come down to the surface and create a strong enough wind gust to cause damage. and that may very well happen over the next several hours. tornado watch in effect from the philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs all the way down through delaware and southern half of new jersey. tornado watch means conditions are favorable for some tornadoes to form somewhere in the watch area. it done mean there's going to be a tornado in every single county, for example. but there may be strong wind gusts in every county. we've had showers so far. and now here comes the first round of the heavier rain into lancaster county, just about into chester county. this heavy cell down by chesapeake bay has created some damage, it's moving 55 miles an hour, be near
