the winds, a few thousand feet up, even stronger. and they do a couple of things. pushes the storms and moves them or way faster, and it also, when you get a thunderstorm, allows wind to come down to the surface and create a strong enough wind gust to cause damage. and that may very well happen over the next several hours. tornado watch in effect from the philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs all the way down through delaware and southern half of new jersey. tornado watch means conditions are favorable for some tornadoes to form somewhere in the watch area. it done mean there's going to be a tornado in every single county, for example. but there may be strong wind gusts in every county. we've had showers so far. and now here comes the first round of the heavier rain into lancaster county, just about into chester county. this heavy cell down by chesapeake bay has created some damage, it's moving 55 miles an hour, be near wilmington, 5:44,

chester near 6:00, philly at about 6:10. this other cell, this is created a tornado warning and this one is headed in the general direction of southern delaware. so seaford, 5:45, milford, 6:08. if it would cross delaware bay and stay intact, cape may at 6:25. gives you an idea, not an absolute immediate threat in the next few minutes but definitely things to watch. look at this line of storms. this is the main danger, as we go through the evening. all of those red boxes there, those are all current tornado warnings. and so the overall tornado threat is moderate, which is actually pretty impressive for this part of the country. it doesn't happen often. damaging wind threat is high. speaking of winds, we've had wind gusts now 40 miles an hour in dover and close to that in atlantic city. that's even without the thunderstorms. now, over to sheena parveen to

talk about timing of when storms are expected. >> timing is right now for parts of the area, heavy rain, now the strongest storms that would be later on tonight. but like glenn showed you, tornado warning in maryland closer to sussex county and delaware. here's future weather. it is showing heavy rain right now in northern delaware and south jersey. around the philadelphia area, mostly off to parts of chester county. but as we go through the next hour, 5:00 p.m., storms and heavy rain are going to rapidly move to the north and northeast. this whole area is quick moving. a lot of the storms that we see, individual ones moving at 60 miles an hour. each hour we're going to see conditions change. 7:00 p.m., part of the area could get a break. notice that line of thunderstorms glenn showed you approaching lehigh valley, delaware by 7:00. we expect this to be containing strong storms, damaging winds, potentially lightning, maybe

isolated tornado. 8:00, line gets closer to the philadelphia area in wilmington, allentown, poconos and moves to the east. now this whole line itself is moving around 30 miles an hour. so we'll keep tracking this. by 10:00 p.m., should be moving into new jersey and delaware, philadelphia area. by 10:00 p.m. storms could be strong with damaging winds possible. by 11:00 tonight, we do expect some storms around, a lot of this should be starting to come to an end. but a stormy evening tonight. and this is going to last through late night hours. a closer look at this. updates and tracking the storms on radar straight ahead. >> stay with us for weather updates every 15 minutes. if an alert comes in, we'll bring it to you right away. download the nbc 10 app. our other big story, pennsylvania governor tom wolf made a surprising announcement this morning about his health. >> the governor revealed to the

public he's battling prostate cancer. lauren mayk is here with more on the governor's health and what lies ahead. >> that treatment will likely start in the next few weeks, after the governor says he'll take a few days with his family. he was clear today he and his doctors are positive about his treatment, believing he can beat this. >> reporter: he called a news conference to make it official. >> my wife and i recently found out i have a mild case of prostate cancer. >> reporter: but the governor cast a casual air and even cracked a joke. >> prostate cancer is something that older men get. >> reporter: his upbeat tone comes from the knowledge his case was caught early. he had a test, psa. >> it's a blood test, stands for prostate specific antigen. >> reporter: dr. david chen tell me prostate cancer causes numbers to go up but test has created controversy. >> so many men have prostate cancer, the question is, are we

finding a lot of cases that maybe aren't dangerous and wouldn't cause problems, and there's a concern that for prostate cancer, there's overdiagnosis. >> reporter: but dr. chen tells me most urologists think the a helpful test because cancer can be deadly. >> if you don't check for it you admit you're going to lose those men. >> reporter: with early diagnose is, governor wolf and his family are optimistic. >> more than hopeful this is -- he'll beat it. >> reporter: clear on the reason why are i found this in a routine checkup because i had the routine collectheckup, it w detected early and i can do something about it. >> governor wolf wanted to keep private the details of treatment but did say he would not be going through chemotherapy. he was asked about the lieutenant governor stepping in and said he would not be inca c incapacita

incapacitated. i asked about working while being treated. that's coming up at 6:00. >> the governor credits routine medical checkup finding cancer ear early. >> knowing that could spur others into getting checked. jacqueline london with more how people react when a public figure announces they're sick. >> a local cancer specialist we spoke to today says governor wolf's high profile and importance to the state makes people take notice. the doctor says it's only natural for people to wonder if the governor will be okay. >> first thing that goes through everybody's mind, my goodness, this public figure, is he in trouble? is he going to die of his answer? but in this day and age, with treatment for prostate cancer that shouldn't be on anybody's mind. >> politicians have faced prostate cancer include california governor jerry brown diagnosed four years ago, former secretary of state colin powell

connection with a possible cheating scandal. 29 cadets are gone. police aren't saying much about the investigation including what kind of cheating is suspected. december. a new jersey legislator wants to lower the state's drinking age from 21 to 18. michael carol says it's wrong an 18-year-old can serve in the military but not be allowed it buy alcohol. it's unlikely the bill will pass. but if it does, there will be a price to pay. a federal law calls for cuts in highway funding for states that reduce the drinking age below 21. his pieers call him the bravest of the brave. philadelphia firefighter received the 2015 firefighter of the year award. for dedicated service and superior performance, he saved the life of a woman whose home was burning in northeast philadelphia. >> these individual acts are

keeping you ready for severe weather from the south. looking at the camera shaking in the wind. roots are wet now. the latest on the threat moving into our area coming up from our first alert weather team in a couple of minutes. but for now, to decision 2016. with the big win in nevada, donald trump is cementing his position. as the republican presidential front-runner. now he's gotten his first congressional endorsements. duncan hunter of california and chris colins of new york, back trump for president. collins says trump has guts and hunter calls him a strong leader. is there enough time to take down trump? >> super tuesday could be the big test. voters in 11 states head to the polls and it's just six days away. >> cydney long joining us live. not everyone thinks a trump nomination is inevitable, right?

jersey's isn't until june 7th. nbc 10 first alert weather team is tracking severe storms headed in our direction. take a look at the damage. they already did in eastern tennessee this morning. trees and power lines down, roofs torn apart. nbc 10's chris pollone more on the damage done across the south. >> reporter: first light revealed the devastation from a powerful storm system sweeping across the southeast spawning tornados from louisiana to florida. hardest hit, mobile home park in louisiana, 150 trailers reduced to rubble. >> probably the worst area that that tornado could have hit. >> reporter: to the east in pensacola, florida, populated neighborhood took a direct hit. >> barely made it to the bottom floor. then we started hearing things ripping apart. we're fortunate to be alive. >> look out. >> reporter: more than a dozen tornadoes reported across the

region, flattening homes, overturning semi trucks, ripping apart buildings. >> so scary. i just -- it was just unreal the sounds have wanting things fly around in your house and you didn't know what was going to happen. >> reporter: indiscriminate nature of tornadoes is tough to predict. destructive nature hard to comprehend. >> tornadoes have a mind of their own. they'll jump over housing areas or over the house that you're in to destroy the house next door. so that's what this tornado did. >> reporter: night of terror for those in the storm's path, with more tornadoes possible as the system pushes east and up into the mid-atlantic region. >> look at that damage. that was chris pollone reporting. >> storms are headed here. tell us more about the tornado watches in effect. >> almost the entire area's under a tornado watch. that's going to run until 11:00 p.m. already seeing heavy rain around the area. we already have lightning strikes in some of this. but this is just a look at the

entire area now. we have seen drastic changes over the past couple of hours with all of this moving in. all of the yellow shaded areas, that is tornado watch. this means until 11:00, isolated tornadoes possible with any strong storms. right now the closest tornado warning south of sussex county in maryland. this goes until 5:30. a strong storm. the same storm causing tornado warnings earlier. right around norfolk, virginia. this has managed to hold together lightning strikes. we expect high winds and it is moving into suspect county at the moment. nelson seeing that. georgetown 5:35. lewes 5:47, cape may, 6:04, wildwood 6:10. moving to the northeast 60 miles an hour. a lot of storms moving quickly. things are rapidly changing each our. philadelphia, heavy rain move up into abbington, lower montgomery county, moving into bucks county

soon. heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding but it's moving quickly. oven parts of chester county, heavy rain across major interstates like 76, near king of prussia, redding. 176 heavy rain falling. be very careful if you are driving if those areas soon, you may want to take it slower or just wait out there. here's the tornado warning to our south. look at the line off to the west. we have a lot of tornado warning in this line. i don't think i've seen this many tornado warnings in one line since i've worked here. this is a significant and rare event in our area. so the threat of tornadoes is going to be moderate through the rest of the evening. here's a look at that line. moving 30 miles an hour from west to east. storms within the line are moving faster around 60 miles an hour. so that whole line should be near wilmington by 8:35, philadelphia closer to 9:30 tonight. that's the main time frame where

we're going to see that stronger line of storms move through. threat tracker for the evening. tornadoes at moderate threat. we're under a tornado watch meaning tornadoes are possible. mostly isolated tornadoes. hail going to be moderate threat. lightning going to be high since we expect thunderstorm activity. with strong or severe storms we expect damaging winds around 60 miles an hour or greater. either way, it will stay gusty through tonight. future weather. as we go through the next hour, expect storms to continue moving up to the north. and by 7:00, 8:00, that line of storms i showed you, that approaches parts of lehigh valley, areas like redding, burkes county, lancaster, we could have storms developing ahead of this that we'll have to watch closely. 9:00, line approaches philadelphia area, new castle county, continues moving across i-95, by 10:00 p.m., approaching areas in new jersey and southern delaware. by 11:00, we should see a lot of this come to an end.

severe weather continues through this evening. and we're bringing you updated weather information every 15 minutes. in the meantime, if you're looking to buy a hoverboard you won't find one on amazon now. the website has quietly pulled hoverboards from the site. the decision comes days after the consumer product safety commission deemed all hoverboards unsafe. amazon's move to pull the scooters from its website follows similar decisions by target and toys r us. some fires happened in our area. ocean county family says a hoverboard ignited their living room, it exploded and burst into flames while being charged in a home in lacy township. move over like button. >> the site is getting more expressive. the social networking site used to only have a thumbs up button if you wanted to like something. now if you hoover your arrow over the up ins up button choose

nbc 10 news first alert weather. >> take a look at nbc 10 radar, first letter weather team tracking potentially severe storms and tornado watch issued for many parts of the area. >> storms could bring lightning and damaging winds. this is what it looks like from storm force 10 driving through montgomery county. clouds are getting darker as rain starts to fall. we are weighing for stronger weather to move in. >> an update on the timing of all of this. breaking it down for your area. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has a closer look at the threats from the storm. >> timing doesn't help either, happening during rush hour. you can see the camera shaking a bit because wind is so strong at surface and stronger higher up in the atmosphere and that's

creating severe weather threat. tornado watch in effect for the area. that is until 11:00 tonight. these conditions are favorable for some tornadoes inside this area during that period of time. and now, our first warning, sussex county in delaware, severe thunderstorm warning until 5:45 p.m. could see wind gusts to 70 miles an hour with that one. you can see a big cluster of heavy rain moving through burkes county, chester county. this storm in the southwestern corner of chester county, that's the strongest one right now, right at the doorstep. as we time it out, phoenixville, 5:50, norristown, close to 6:00. abbington 6:06. north hampton 6:14. other big storm, sussex county, 5:30 in lewes, 5:50 cape may if it holds together across delaware bay. and as we look inside this

storm, remember the only one that has warning in effect so far. we don't just look and see what the intensity is at the ground, we look inside the core and right in here, you can see higher up, the purple color, that's an indication of hail, well above the ground. so sometimes we take three dimensional looks through the storm to cut it in pieces to se what it looks like inside. every storm is different. this is the most dangerous part of the whole system, the line of storms. every one of those red boxes is a current tornado warning. we've got a dozen of them in effect right now in virginia, in north carolina. these are places that don't normally get this kind of severe weather. this is an unusually strong severe weather situation. that's why the tornado threat is higher than it usually get. s to say moderate that happens once or twice a year.

damaging wind threat is very high. meteorologist sheena parveen more on the timing when the storms move through. >> it's going to be impacting the rest of the evening commute and into the late night hours. we still have threat of isolated tornadoes, damaging winds. and here's a look. storms are moving quickly around 60 miles an hour. here's a look as we go through the next hour. now getting closer to 6:00 p.m. on future weather here. so this shows us in time as storms move to the north and northeast. new jersey, trenton, mercer county seeing more storms at this time. even watching line of storms approaching from the west. closer to 7:00, 8:00. more storms developing around the philadelphia area. but this line, that's what we're keeping our eye on by 7:00, 8:00. that's the severe line, that's already back off to the west and southwest. the same line that is just producing a train of tornado warnings. that will be moving in as we go towards 9:00 p.m. tonight.

there's a chance we could see isolated tornado with the line. we expect either way damaging winds and severe storms. rest of the area we can see more storms developing in new jersey and delaware. but that line will continue to move through the philadelphia area by 10:00 p.m., trenton,women, delaware, around sussex county mainly and moving towards the shore closer to 11:00 p.m. and that's when a lot of this starts to come to an end and break up and move out. until then the threat for severe weather is going to stay in the forecast. threat for isolated tornado staying in the forecast. i'll track the storms and any changes happening over the past 15 minutes. storms are moving very quickly. i'll show you details coming up. >> stay with us for weather updates every 15 minutes and if an alert comes in, we'll bring it to you right away. follow the weather in your neighborhood downloading nbc 10 app. pennsylvania governor tomorrow wolf says he'll begin cancer treatment in the next few

weeks. >> wolf revealed he has prostate cancer. the governor was joined by the first lady. the cancer was caught early, and it will not affect his able to govern. >> i'm convinced, by people who have looked at this and by other people that i've gotten this early on, it's not that -- it's very eminently treatable. >> the governor will take a short vacation before treatment. and with wolf's announcement comes a lot of questions about the disease. >> to help answer them, from the prostate cancer center at cooper. this was caught early. the importance of screenings what are the main screenings of prostate cancer? >> one of the reasons, a lot of men with low risk disease won't have symptoms. so by the time you have symptoms it could be too late. that's why prostate cancer screening with a wreck till exam

is important to catch early before it's too late. >> the governor is saying he's not going to chemotherapy. >> the treatment options are many, and it depends on your risk category. not all prostate cancers are quote created equal. treatment depends on the risk category. for all comers, treatments include active surveillance, we watch and treat when things progress or radiation or surgery where we remove the prostate. it specific to each patient and the type of prostate cancer you have. >> research released finds men who are balding are at a higher rick for prostate cancer. what is the link there? >> if you are balding, not to be too concerned because there are studies showing some length of prostate cancer and the others showing opposite. testosterone, male hormone, the driver of prostate growth, regular and cancer so it has to do with testosterone levels

here's another look at nbc 10 radar we are on alert for high winds and thunderstorms. no warnings for coastal flooding at the shore now. but many at the coast say flooding is happening more often. >> nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg shows us how one community is taking steps to help reduce the threat. >> reporter: whether it's outside the coffee shop where tyler works or in his neighborhood a few blocks away, scenes like this and becoming more common. >> flooding is becoming more frequent. >> reporter: in the past few years the water levels have gotten higher, with flooding at least a couple times a month and not just when there's a big storm. >> it's worrisome and a nuisance, you no, like wake up some days and i have somewhere to go and can't get out because

my street is a river. >> reporter: it's that nuisance flooding that experts with the coastal research center are focusing on as they get ready to launch a new study next month in ventnor. >> reporter: this is real. sea level rise is part of the reason flooding is happening more often. >> we need to educate everybody out it that this isn't just a happen chance sort of thing. >> reporter: every time it floods research will pair documented tidal levels with photos showing how high the water got in specific places. the goal, to find solutions to potentially prevent future flooding and protect property. >> we have to kind of focus on what we really intend to do about it over the next 25 years, as we continue to really want to live on the jersey shore. >> reporter: ferrell expects the study to document flooding at self-locations in the city over

today. they called it, it is a wet one. >> so they were right on and with that forecast. storms moving into the area now and we'll keep this in the forecast as we go into tonight. here's a look at radar, heavy rain through lehigh, south jersey and delaware and in delaware, we are seeing quite a bit of lightning. the tornado watch until 11:00 tone. isolated tornadoes are possible. all of the counties in yellow, everyone has a fair chance of seeing an isolated tornado. we dope have any right now but later tonight, good potential we could. severe thunderstorm warning in sussex, delaware, until 5:45. with this storm we could see winds near 60 miles an hour, damaging winds, lightning, potentially hail and also very heavy rain. this storm is moving mostly to the northeast around 60 miles an hour. these are quick movers. so as we go through tonight, quick-moving storms will rapidly

be changing our conditions every hour. if you're in cape may, expected by 6:15. more east river. millville, 7:09. near rich haland heavy rain. 476, burkes county, a lot of that is starting to move out. and the poebs are seeing heavy rain at the moment. take a look to the west. yellow shaded areas, a tornado watch we're under the same instability here. some areas have a better chance of seeing tornado outbreaks than we do. and that's what i've circled to the west this line of severe storms and we have a lot of tornado warnings in this line. over 15 tornado warnings if this line alone, going from washington down to richmond and farther south and there you see it, it's going to moving into our area but mostly northern edge. that's approaching later into tonight. that's the line we're going to be watching as we go through the late night hours.

if you're in wilmington, expect this line by 8:30. philadelphia closer to about 9:15. we'll be watching that closely for the chance for an isolated tornado or severe thunderstorms with damaging winds. so tornado risk here on the threat tracker at a moderate level today since we are under the tornado watch. hail's at a moderate level. lightning going to be high. damaging winds high. these are wind gusts near 60 miles an hour. we do expect more damaging wind as we go into tonight. so this is future weather. again, storms are moving quickly. so rapidly changing over each hour, by 6:00 p.m. tonight, more storms continue to moving up to the north and watching that line off to our west. 7:00 p.m., that line approaches areas like redding, burkes county, lancaster county and this line alone is moving around 30 miles an hour, so it's going to take longer toer that line to move through, individual storms in the line are moving faster around 60 miles an hour. then we go into 9:00 p.m. tonight. there you see the line of storms

approaching philadelphia, areas like wilmington, lehigh valley, trenton by 9:00 p.m., and isolated storming in new jersey ahead of the line. by 10:00 tonight, line moves through philadelphia, dover, through trenton, new jersey, closer to 11:00 p.m. and then clearing out after midnight and into early tomorrow morning. so, future wind gusts, near -- stay around 30 to 40-mile-an-hour-winds as we go through the rest of the evening. that's going to stay in the forecast. as we go into tomorrow, a windy day. tone, gusty thunderstorms providing locally damaging winds as we go through the afternoon or the rest of the afternoon and evening. tomorrow, windy, chance of afternoon thunderstorms. temperatures in the mid to low 50s. so we'll be watching all of this as we go through tomorrow as well. let's head over to glenn "hurricane" schwartz with more updates. >> that one storm, southern delaware, it's now a severe

thunderstorm warning for portions of kent county and sussex county until 6:15. this storm is moving at 65 miles an hour and it's capable of producing winds of 70 miles an hour or even greater. the storm located right near milford as you can see on our radar right now. thing is moving 70 miles an hour, straight to the north. that's 13 miles north of georgetown. now, if we track it to the north, you can see it will continue to move maybe just to the east of dover over the next hour or so. but about 6:10, gandy's beach, cedarville, 6:14, bridgeton, 6:197 6:19770-mile-an-hour wind capable of foxing down trees, which can knock down power
