philadelphia streets. the officer now applauded for his courage, and restraint during a volatile situation. a house of horrors, dead dogs found around a philadelphia home. the disturbing scene inside, and why this house has such a troubling history. he repeated himself five times four weeks ago. >> republican rumble. the gop's final face-off before super tuesday. we begin with slaughter in the nation's heartland. a gunman opened fire on his co-workers in a shooting spree with multiple crime scenes. i'm jacqueline london. >> i'm jim rosenfield. four people are dead, including the apparent lone gunman. 14 others are injured, ten of them in critical condition. police have now surrounded his home. they think his roommate might be inside. this is all in heston, kansas, 35 miles north of wichita.

the sheriff there shez we still don't have a lot of answers. in an instant another american community experience the chaos and bloodshed of a mass shooting. >> the shooting at random. and he came out, you know, he was following people out the back. and i thought he was going to shoot me so i ran. >> reporter: the gunfire linked this afternoon sent workers running from excel industries north of wichita. >> i had no idea what to do. we were hopping fences. people were running, people were screaming, people were crying. >> reporter: as police and ambulances descended op the plant, authorities say the gurnman, a current, or possible former excel employee was shot and killed by law enforcement. his motive, unclear. >> we know the shooter is down. there could be as many as three brothers, and possibly 20 people injured. >> reporter: the shooting on the

excel grounds both inside and in the company's parking lot, just one of several crime scenes, including at least two others involving drivers or pedestrians. relatives of excel employees rushed to the facility after loved ones called them. >> my daughter, actually, she called. we couldn't understand her a whole lot. she just said she was like, mom, i need you here. there's been a shooting. we're all -- that was pretty much it. i lost it. >> it's scary. we don't know what this world's coming to. >> reporter: tonight the fbi has been called in to help local law enforcement sort out what led to the carnage. >> there's going to be a lot of sad people before this is all over. >> the motive remains up clear at this hour. the sheriff says this is not an act of terrorism. new at 11:00, a man is in custody for trig erlg a barricade tonight that forced the bucks county high school to go into lockdown. the negotiat suspect was wearin

armor. he's in the hospital for a mental evaluation. a nearby high school was locked down as a precaution. a philadelphia police officer has his life threatened but he doesn't fire his gun. tonight that officer is telling nbc 10 news exactly what happened when he came face-to-face with the man who threatened to shoot him in the head. andrea? >> reporter: yes, that officer said he did not see the guy come up on him. now, in a rare interview, we're hearing what happened next in the officer's own words. 6:00 wednesday night mifflin square park. doing paperwork in his police cruiser. a man tapped on the officer's window but does not respond when edwards asks if he needs help. >> i asked him if i could help

him. his first response was, i should blow your f'ing head off. at that moment he pushed my door shut with his body weight, with both of his hands still in his pants. i didn't know if he had a weapon, a knife or a gun. >> reporter: officer edwards manages to get out of his car and draw his gun and confront haines. he allegedly makes a shooting gesture with his hands as if he was pulling the trigger. officer eric tyler arrives as backup. >> he started charging me. i said, take your hands out of your pants. and he didn't. as he took another step i started to taser him. >> reporter: haines was arrested without other further problems. >> nothing routine about police work. it's just a reaction. >> reporter: today both officers are back at work on the same block knowing things could have been much different. >> he could have had a gun. and i wouldn't have known anything. i just would have been a victim. and he would have been a murderer. >> reporter: the police commissioner says that the officers would have been

justified if they decided to shoot the suspect. but in every instance they say the goal is to preserve life. both the officers' lives and the suspect's life. and they say that this incident shows that their training works. reporting live in south philadelphia, i'm aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. hartnet had numerous surgeries on his arm after he was hit by three bullets. the assassination attempt was carried out by a man who allegedly pledged allegiance to isis. he remains in jail tonight without bail, charged with attempted murder. tonight we know for sure. >> this destruction in lancaster county was caused by a tornado. the ef-2 tornado stretched over five or six miles, packing winds up to 125 miles per hour. it destroyed about 100 buildings

in its path, including an amish schoolhouse. >> thousands of chickens were also caught in the path of the tornado. workers sifted through the debris of two collapsed chicken houses, passing live chickens down the line and into the bed of a truck. it's not clear how many of the 16,000 chickens can be saved. in other news, a serious case of animal abuse is expanding. >> on tuesday the pennsylvania spca found seven dead dogs in a germantown home. crews arrived to cover the story, we discovered it was even worse than initially thought. george spencer's been tracking the developments all evening. george, this particular house has been used for dogfighting in the past. >> reporter: jacqueline, this week marks the third time in three years that animal welfare investigators have served warrants at the same house. they now want that house either torn down or boarded up, saying it has become really an epicenter of deadly dogfighting

in the germantown neighborhood. our cameras were there tonight as spca investigators searched this lot with flashlights, thanks to a tip from nbc 10 crews at the scene, and found three more dead pit bulls dumped in plastic bags. just back on tuesday, spca crews discovered seven dead dogs at this home directly across the street. >> we used to hear the dogs. >> reporter: lynn smith insists neighbors had no idea what was happening inside the home, but when we looked through the front window tonight, we could see nothing but dog footprints covering the wood floor, and this large metal cage. >> the property is completely vacant. and there's no furniture, there's nothing inside the property. it's just strictly a stash house for dogs. >> reporter: george calls this animal cruelty at its very worst. when officials served a warrant

tuesday based on a tip, they found six dead puppies in a trash can out back, and another dead dog inside. but they've been to this home before, making an animal cruelty arrest first in 2013, and then a second arrest in 2014. we're told one of the dogs discovered by nbc 10 in the nearby lot may be the mother of those dead puppies, all likely victims of the underground dogfight economy. >> animal fighting and the breeding of these dogs, it's big money in it, okay? a lot of money in it. >> reporter: two dogs were found alive at that home. they are now being cared for here at the spca. as far as that 2014 arrest, that case is still pending in court. but even property records are not providing investigators any good leads in this latest case. they really need tips. reporting live in hunting park, george spencer, nbc 10 news.

to decision 2016, the high stakes republican debate. the candidates battled in their last face-off before super tuesday. the biggest target, donald trump. as his rivals struggled to slow his momentum. nbc 10 national correspondent jay gray was at the debate in houston. >> reporter: marco rubio threw the first punch challenging donald trump on immigration. >> if you're going to claim you're the only one that listed this in the campaign, that you acknowledge that you're the only person on this stage that's ever been fined for hiring people to work on your projects illegally. >> reporter: ted cruz came out swinging at trump as well. >> i really find it amazing that donald believes that he is the one who discovered the issue of the illegal immigration. >> reporter: the two men closest in the delegate count and the polls challenging the front-runner in their last face-to-face showdown before the pivotal super tuesday vote. >> he hired workers from poland and had to pay $1 million in a judgment. >> reporter: trump as he has throughout the campaign fired

sanders with black voters. she wrapped up a day of campaigning with a town hall meeting in north charleston. bernie sanders is focusing in the midwest. sanders insists he's not writing off any of the deep south states with upcoming primaries. bill cosby is dropping his defamation lawsuit against supermodel beverly johnson. cosby's lawyer said he's letting the suit go for now to instead focus on the criminal charges he faces in pennsylvania. he is charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a former temple university employee at his montgomery home in 2004. she also accused cosby of drugging her. tonight a south jersey church hosted a panel on why black lives matter. it comes after someone stole a black lives matter banner two different times from the church. the church calls the thieves cowards who tried to send a

it stopped along west 3rd street. the victim died at the hospital. if you recognize this van, or the suspect inside it, you're asked to call chester police. in montgomery county, a new police chief tonight. chris ward was appointed to acting chief last month. he was officially promoted tonight. the former police chief went on to become chief deputy of the montgomery county sheriff's department. new at 11:00, unsafe to ride. that's what federal regulators say now about every single hover board on the market. now a local company is trying to set new hover board standards. randy gyllenhaal explains the goal is to prevent falls and flames. >> i cannot believe this. >> reporter: the hottest holiday gift catching fire with consumers, hover boards causing all sorts of headaches. and now federal regulators say not a single model is considered safe to ride. >> we view that as defective and

it's subject to seizure at the ports in the united states. >> reporter: this week retailers like amazon and walmart pulled them from the shelves. the feds say hover boards have caused brain injuries, the batteries sparking 50-plus fires. a new jersey attorney filed a lawsuit on wednesday after his client's home was set ablaze. >> the fire was in her son's bedroom. caused $10,000 worth of damage. >> reporter: the hover board industry is reacting working on safety standards. a conference call with manufacturers and retailers worldwide. beginning to agree on safe speeds and weight limits, so you don't take a tumble. >> all of that tends to drive the market toward the safer place. >> reporter: to fix those batteries, underwriters laboratory will certify they won't explode, but so far none have met the requirements. cheaper chinese batteries are linked to many of those fires.

month program. the kids wore fashions by african and african-american designers. tonight the philadelphia museum of art is celebrating a big gift. more than 50 american works of art. here's a live look at the museum now that just received the works from the estate of local collector daniel dietrich ii. the gift also included a $10 million endowment for the museum. among the donated works of art is this 1962 painting from edward hopper called road and trees. it's the museum's first painting by hopper. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. with meteorologist sheena parveen. well, it's still very windy outside. and that is making temperatures feel colder. you will definitely notice it tomorrow morning. the morning hours will stay windy, and it will be colder than it was this morning. we're looking at temperatures in the teens for most of the area. going into the weekend, it's going to also be a cold start. but then we have 60-degree

temperatures moving in for half your week. i'll show you the forecast in just a second. here's what it feels like when you walk outside with the wind. it feels like 32 degrees in philadelphia. feels like the 20s north and west. are as we go overnight tonight, temperatures will be dropping to around 30 degrees for the philadelphia area. the windchills, that feels-like temperature, that's going to stay about ten degrees colder. so that's pretty steady, even as we go into tomorrow morning and through the middle of the day tomorrow. still feeling about ten degrees colder across the area. as we go through the morning hours, expect winds still to be gusting as high as they are now. currently we're seeing wind gusts near 30 miles an hour. that's why it feels so much colder. that will be the case through the day tomorrow, too. now, for the rest of the area, this is 7:00 tomorrow morning. if you're in al hentown, it will feel close to 16 degrees. pottstown, feeling like 15. philadelphia feels like 19. most of south jersey could feel

like the upper teens also. as we go through the lunchtime hour, feeling only like the mid-20s through most of the area, then through the afternoon, only feeling close to 30 degrees. it is going to be a windy and cold day all day tomorrow. locally, though, we got rid of the light showers we had around. if you're up in the poconos or lehigh valley, you could see flurries blow through. that's about it for tonight, though. we're watching the cold air move in tonight into tomorrow. it will stay cold and windy. there you see the colder air mass moving down friday night into saturday. a cold start to the weekend. lows will be in the 20s. then we go into sunday, and monday. and temperatures will be near 60 degrees. we're going to have a nice warm-up by the end of your weekend. for tonight, windy and cold, 30 for the low in philadelphia, 26 areas north and west tomorrow. around the upper 30s. like i mentioned, we'll be feeling like the upper 20s because it's going to stay windy. at least it will be mostly sunny, so nice dry weekend.
