good evening, we begin with breaking news out of the washington, d.c. area. a police officer has been shot and killed in the line of duty tonight according to authorities. the officer and two others were

shot while responding to the scene of a domestic-related shooting right here in the town of religionridge, virginia. police say the gunman is in custody. it's unclear how badly the other officers were wounded. there are reports this may have been the officer's first weekend on the job after being sworn in on friday. we'll continue to follow this and bring you updates in the morning. a heroin user saved and brought back from the brink. medics use narcan to reverse the overdeuce. addiction has gripped the region and narcan is being used to jolt people back to life. we look closer at the epidemic and has more of this exclusive video. >> reporter: it's 4:00 p.m. in kensington and a septa cop sprints to huntingdon station. a man is unconscious on the

brought back to life. he was jolted awake and brought back to the hospital. this woman carries narcan with her every day on the train. she has already saved one life and expects to save another in no time. >> it's normal. it's everyday life. it's a shame but it's everyday life down here. >> reporter: in kensington, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. new information about a stabbing in an elevator at a philadelphia septa station. these are photos of the man police are trying to track down in this case. it happened in kensington. that man pulled out a noo knife and demanded money from a woman in the elevator and stabbed her in the shoulder and the leg. the victim is at the hospital being treated for stab wounds. despite what you hear, we don't need to make america great again, america has never stopped being great.

>> hillary clinton takes a swipe at donald trump as she seems to shift into general election attack mode after her overwhelming victory in the south carolina primary tonight. she defeated bernie sanders handily with 74% of the vote compared to sanders's 26%. andrea kline thomas explains what this means ahead of super tuesday. >> it's how hillary clinton won that is giving her campaign a boost. but in philadelphia, bernie sanders supporters rallied to stop the momentum. >> and tomorrow, this campaign goes national. >> reporter: it's an overwhelming win in south but when looking at nbc's exit polls it shows secretary clinton

dominated amongst african-american and women voters and also led with white voters. >> we are going to compete for every vote in every state. we are not taking anything and we're not taking anyone for granted. >> it makes me so happy to have the opportunity to run against donald trump. >> reporter: bernie sanders was not in the palmetto state today instead taking his campaign to texas and minnesota. and here in philadelphia, supporters are feeling the bern as they rallied at city hall. >> people ask me all the time, do you really think that bernie can win? i'm like i really do believe in this movement. >> reporter: both campaigns are ramping up ahead of super tuesday where democrats in 11 states will go to the polls and likely decide who gets the nomination. on super tuesday more than 800 delegates are at stake for the democrats.

the republican candidates are trying to figure out how to cash in on the largest single day haul of delegates in the race. a dozen states will hold their nominating contests. you can see them right here on the map. today chris christie was back on the campaign trail with donald trump. it comes a day after his endorsement of the republican front runner. at this rally in arkansas trump spent most of his time bashing marco rubio. rubio continued his assault on trump today in georgia. the florida senator says he can win the republican nomination outright. the reason? he believes that voters will begin to see that trump is a quote, unquote, con man. daniel cruz campaigned where he revelled in the verbal combat between rubio and trump. he says he wants to avoid what

he calls a battle of insults. cruz predicts he will do well in his home state. john kasich blasted the tone of the republican campaign. he questioned candidates who trade names and insults can present themselves as leaders to young people. now to the weather no drama here. this is a live look at the blue cross river rink. plenty of people out and about at this hour of the night. it will close for the season tomorrow evening as we get a taste of spring. we have more on the warmup on the way. >> the warm air is not far off to the west but we are still looking at a cold night as we head into your saturday evening. 38 in philadelphia, 30s from millville to atlantic city and upper 20s in the allentown area. that is the actual temperature but it is feeling colder in philadelphia, 30 degrees for the

feels like temperature. upper 20s in wilmington. the warm air is on the way. but if you are headed out tonight you need to make sure you are warm enough and that is the case early sunday as well. north and west will likely start the day below the freezing mark. 32 in the poconos, upper 30s near the shore. but the temperatures jump up quickly. and upper 40s toward the shore and in the afternoon plenty of sunshine through the entire day but later in the day the temperatures jump up. lower 60s in philadelphia and upper 50s in the poconos. again, a very warm sunday in the forecast and we're not looking at the warm for just one day it's going to stick around for a couple days. and coming up we'll see when our next chance for rain and snow is headed our way, rosemary? we'd like to draw your attention to seat 29e. >> a husband from bucks county

neighbors came to a resident's rescue today after he got trapped underneath the debris of this house collapse. it happened this morning in the grays ferry section. demolition crews cleaned up the

rubble. the property did not have any open violations. however neighbors tell us the foundation appeared to be crumbling. crews on scene suspect the heavy rain and strong winds may have played a part in the collapse. the resident went to the hospital but he is expected to be okugo. a fire chief is in the hospital recovering from a heart attack he suffered while battling a blaze in ocean county. crews responded to this house fire. the fire chief collapsed at the scene from what turned out to be a heart attack. he is at the hospital this evening. the house is a total loss. coming up, a woman from bucks county is thanking the crew on her flight home after their helped give her husband the surprise of a lifetime. we'll explain after the break. and temperatures could reach the 60 degree mark tomorrow and the warmth is going to stick

tomorrow friends and family will come together to remember former miss new jersey cara mccollum. funeral services will be held in her hometown. a memorial service was held earlier tonight. another memorial is scheduled next month. she was a news anchor at snj today. she died monday after a car crash in bad weather. she was the girlfriend of our friend and colleague keith jones. tonight the miss philadelphia

pageant paid tribute to mccollum. contestants and spectators were asked to bring a book. they will be donated to mccollum's organization, the birthday book project. >> we're just so proud of having her been a part of new jersey and we plan on carrying on her birthday book program. >> the project provides brand-new gift wrapped books to kindergarten through fifth grade students for their birthday. a bucks county man got the surprise of his life on a flight home from las vegas. >> although you didn't strike it rich here in las vegas you did hit the jackpot. congratulations. you're about to be a dad. >> what a way to learn you're about to be a father.

lisa surprised her husband with help from an american airlines flight crew. the flight erupted in cheers. we wish them the best. still looking cold tonight and into the early morning hours on sunday. nonetheless we are talking about beautiful conditions for the afternoon not only with plenty of sunshine but warmer temperatures in the forecast on sunday and those warmer temperatures are going to stick around for a couple of days. coming up we'll look at when the rain and wind will return. we have a few days to enjoy the warmer temperatures. currently 38 in philadelphia, mid-30s north and west. 37 in mont holly. mid-30s in wildwood and atlantic city. the cold air across the northeast will start to lift to the north and weiss making way

for the warmer temperatures. in the upper 50s in kansas and this warm air will lift toward our area and bring us a nice couple of days. we have a lot of warm air and dry air. not a lot of rain or snow in the nation's midsection. that's going the keep the storm track off to the north. we keep things quiet as we head into tonight and sunday looking dry as well. cold to get the day underway but the temperatures jump up quickly. upper 50s nearly across the board and a run at the lower 60s. dry and mild sunday night and monday. through the course of the morning a weak front is approaching to bring in showers monday morning. not looking widespread or heavy. and it looks like it will clear out by the afternoon without really dropping the temperatures a lot. even as we head into monday we could be looking at lower 60s as well.
