nbc 10 news starts now. happening today, super tuesday, the single biggest day in the campaign for the white house. 13 different states are holding primaries and caucuses. >> kids out here killing people. erñ calls for action. residents and philadelphia's mayor discuss ongoing violence after a drive i had by shooting injured two teens. a chilly start but we'll warm to near 60 this afternoon and rain is in the seven-day forecast. it's 42 degrees right now at 4:00 a.m. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast for this first day of march. >> we are on a roll.

60s on sunday, 60s yesterday and though it's chilly this morning, we'll have a nice warmup today. allentown, 39 degrees. most spots are above freezing in the 40s for philadelphia and wilmington. but look at millville, clears skies, less wind, very dry air has allowed the temperatures to come down. it will be a quick warmup today with bright sunshine and much less wind than we saw yesterday. a gentle breeze blowing here at the nbc 10 studios. these skies are clear. we with are set for sunshine today. 40 degrees at 6:00 with winds just at 4 miles an hour, a hint of a breeze at 6 miles an hour, 46 degrees at 9:00. then it's into the 50s and will continue warming as we go into the afternoon. i'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood to show you which spots will make it into the 60s today when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington is watching dry roads this morning. >> definitely dry roads. that doesn't mean they're empty, bill. we have construction that's out in center city until 4:00 a.m. about this time, these

construction crews should be cleaning up. watch out for that on 19th street southbound between market street and ben franklin parkway there will be lane restrictions there. if you're heading out the door on the blue route, no problems. this is our camera around germantown pike on ramp. no problems there. all cars moving along nicely. no restrikes. roadways are dry. route 202. check out the drive times there, 30 to the schuylkill expressway, speeds up there into the 50s. tracy? now to decision 2016 is super tuesday. more than a dozen contests that are key to the presidential race. more nominating delegates are up for grabs today than on any other day in the election cycle. 13 states will hold primaries or caucuses. republican donald trump is expected to win most of those states. several protesters disrupted trump's rally yesterday in virginia. that didn't stop him from

attacking his gop rivals. >> rubio, i have to listen to him say, he's a con man. >> senator cruz and rubio kept swinging at the front-runner yesterday. >> we are not going to give up ou)hfreedom. we're not going to do it. >> what he's saying to people isn't true. it doesn't match his record yet somehow it's gotten to this point. it's gotten too far. >> polls show rubio and cruz trailing trump by double digits in many of the states involved in today's voting. ahead in the next half hour, defending the front-runner. new jersey governor chris christie talks about why he's supporting donald trump. the super tuesday is similar with democrats with front-runner hillary clinton looking for a big haul of delegates today. >> on super tuesday, there's a different path that americans want to take and that we're going to do that. >> clinton's opponent, bernie sanders in min men yesterday repeating his strategy for

today. new from overnight, philadelphia police are searching for a gunman after a double shooting in hunting park. investigators say a north percy street resident shot two men in their 20s who were renting another room in the house. police say a baby was in the home when the shots were fired. they believe the gunman is now with that baby along with a woman and two other men. doctors are treating the victims at temple hospital. dozens of local pastors plan to meet today to find ways to curb gun violence. kin y kenyatta johnson is heading that discussion. >> last night, nbc 10 was at a community meeting in south philadelphia not far from where a drive-by shooting on sunday wounded two teenagers mayor jim kenney told neighbors he wants to use money from a proposed

soda tax so fix up rec centers. step up, said neighbors we spoke with. >> it don't make no sense. young boys. it's crazy and it's got to stop. >> the concerns of this community is immediate. it has to be stopped now. >> kids are getting kill for no reason. it's just too much. >> community activists say they'll be coming up with more plans to help solve the problem of gun violence. yesterday, the mayor unveiled new details about a soda tax. he plans to include the new tax in the budget plan that he presents to city council on thursday. the tax would be 3 cents per ounce. that's 36 cents on a 12 ounce can of soda but only on sugary beverages. diet sodas would be excluded. the tax would be leave individual on distributors. >> we don't make that much money on soda as it is. whatever prices they raise up, we'll have to raise it to the consumer. >> two previous attempts in philadelphia to enact a soda tax, both failed, partly because

then city councilmen opposed the tax. the soda tax would fund a community school. the idea is to provide a chase where your child doesn't just go to learn but they go for medical care and access to social services as well. katy zachry to explain how that works. >> this is mayor jim kenney's initiative. already it has strong support from city council and the school district. the mayor is serious, he's hired someone whose sole purpose it is to make it happen. nbc 10 was the only station to travel with mayor kenny and council president daryll clark to cincinnati, ohio last fall to see one of the most successful community schools in the country. the oiler school has a medical and dental clinic, day-care center and much more that students and parents can use. it's that vision that mayor kenney has for schools here in philadelphia. he recently named susan

golbreski the person to make it happen. >> a lot of schools have pieces in motion, they have partnerships, strong parental involvement, they're starting to make xections with health centers. universities are looking to see what they can do. >> reporter: the big question, when will all this happen? and also, what partners like universities and hospitals have shown an interest in being a part of this? we'll talk all about that coming up in the next hour. reporting live in center city. katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> 4:02 and 42 degrees. new jersey state troopers claiming that officers boosted diversity at the police academy by ignoring background checks. an acting sergeant filed a whistle-blower lawsuit claiming the state police re-assigned her and would not promoteç her aft she flagged police applicants with criminal records. a xplees spokesperson told nbc 10 he can't comment on the lawsuit. he did tell us the state police are putting more effort into

recruiting qualified and more diverse applicants. the natural gas power plant would be billed along route 301 at the middletown technology center near the center of town. protesters say they sent a petition with hundreds of signatures to the mayor and town council asking for a public meeting where they could learn more information. they say that request has been ignored so far. >> we're not saying, you know, just throw the whole project out without question. the thing i've been asking from the beginning if this is such a great project, just show us. >> we reached out to middletown's mayor for comment. we'll let you know when we hear back. >> happening today, a new community development project gets under way that's expected to create 140 permanent jobs in north philadelphia. ground breaking will happen this afternoon for the plaza allegheny project. the shopping center will transform more than nine acres of vacant land and junk yards

around second and allegheny. a grocery store is already on board. dozens of jobs will be created in a neighborhood with one of the highest unemployment rates in philadelphia. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 4:10. first day of march. we have a nice day ahead. but right now, it's a bill chilly outside. it will be a chilly morning, however, we'll see a lot of sunshine today. beautiful day to start march off with lots of sunshine. march is definitely coming in like a lamb. but i'm already tracking wet weather that's going to change that tomorrow. the rain will be moving in and gusty winds will be here, too. this morning, the winds are fairly light and the sky's clear in reading. 42 degrees in philadelphia and 48 in cape may. that is warmer than normal. this time of year you'd see temperatures in the very low 30s. we're doing just fine on this first day of march. skies are clear. one the sun is up, we're good to go and watch the temperatures

climb into the 60s possibly. right now we are in the clear, scattered clouds to the north. those are not rainmakers but look to the west and this is what's going to change it all tomorrow. and bring our stretch of beautiful weather to an end. that's snow and rain, a system that will sweep through tomorrow morning. but today, don't have the to deal with any of that. today you'll see sunshine. bright sunshine at that. 44, the high temperature in the pocono mountains. look at allentown, middle 50s and 57 degrees for reading. operate sunny skies for mountç holly, trenton and norristown. a chill for atlantic city, breeze coming in off the ocean will keep things cooler at 49 degrees. inland, the sunshine will warm vineland and dover, in the middle 50s this afternoon. the wind will be lighter today. even though we'll be in the 50s, it will feel like the 60s. we won't get that gusty, chilly breeze. 57 not bad for wilmington and drexel hill, 58 for philadelphia.

her first day on the job. vai sikahema is live in the digital operations center with more. vai? >> good morning, tracy. broadcast news and social media are relating the story of officer ashley guindon in the performance of her duties. she was sworn in last friday in washington, d.c. she lost her life the next day, officer guindon was just 28 years old. yesterday in court -- last night, police officers stood at attention as the hurst drove past the station to where she was assign. her career was cut short before it really began. >> i can't imagine this being her first day on the job.

her first phone call and to lose her life like this. my heart goes out toç her. >> some community members said they plan to attend the officer's funeral later today. police officers across the country are paying tribute by posting their first day on the job on social media. you're looking at just a few of the images tweeted out by philadelphia police officers. the officer's funeral is schedule for noon in dale city, virginia. live in the digital operations center, vai sikahema, nbc 10 news. tracy? >> vai, thanks. 4:17. classes canceled today in one ohio school district after a 14-year-old student opened fire in his school. two students were injured by the gunfire. two others hurt in the ensuing chaos. everyone will be okay. it happened in the cafeteria of the madison junior/senior high school in middletown, ohio. one student called 911. >> i'm at madison high school. there's a shooting.

he's got a gun and he started shooting people. >> how many people did he shoot? >> i'm not sure. he just pulled out his gun and started shooting. >> police say they do know the motive of the 14-year-old boy accused of shooting his classmates. they're not revealing it, though, at this point. hollywood and movie fans are remembering george kennedy, oscar-winning character actor. he died yesterday at the age of 91. he won best supporting actor for his role as a convict in the 1967 movie "cool hand luke." he played a police officer in the "naked gun" film series. he died at his home in idaho. new information this morning on the man caught trying to pass himself off as a harrisburg high school student. it turns out that 23-year-old artur samarin applied to and was accepted into a citizens police academy. he had a driver's license and

social security card for his alias, asher potts. he is really a 23-year-old ukrainian citizen. was arraigned yesterday on charges including identity theft. parts of lancaster county continue to rebuild following storms and a tornado last week that caused millions of dollars in damage. skyforce 10 flew over salisbury township yesterday. you can see more than a dozen workers framing a house and what's left of a hen house. the storm destroyed most of the building. take a look at the scene last wednesday. county officials said the wild weather damaged about 100 structures in all. the national weather service confirmed an ef-2 tornado with winds of up to 125 miles an hour was responsible. no one was killed or seriously injured. people are still cleaning up in northampton county. crews work toç steady this building in easton yesterday. storms last week caused heavy damage. officials said it could take a week to demolish the building. they said surrounding businesses

would not be affected. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 20 minutes after 4:00. we had a nice rebound yesterday. the clouds moved through. we saw showers. this is the view from blue mountain yesterday. this morning, those clouds are completely cut out of the picture. we have 42 degrees. nice and clear skies. the wind out of the west/southwest at 8 miles an hour. a little bit of a chill in the air. it is cooler than yesterday but pretty mild for march. the 1st of march and we should normally see temperatures below freezing this morning. we don't have that. the wind is light. skies are clear. it is a dramatic change from yesterday afternoon. but we did see a nice warmup yesterday afternoon. clear view from center city from the comcast center. 30s for lancaster, 31 in millville. there are colder areas in chester county, west chester at 34 degrees. currently 40 in chester springs. check out coatesville, 33

degrees this morning. it is dry. you don't have to worry about any sign of clouds or rain this morning. that changes tomorrow. in fact, this is going to change not only the condition and bring us rain in the morning but it's also going to usher in colder air that will have a big impact on friday and potentially over the weekend when we could see wintry weather. tomorrow morning, though, it will still be warm. when this rain moves in, late tonight and early tomorrow morning, that's 2:00 in the morning. look at the rain coming down in allentown. it will be falling in philadelphia. we'll start off rain at 4:00 in the morning in philadelphia. by commute time, it starts inching into new jersey at 7:00 at the shore and quickly moving offshore. there's going to be fast-moving rain for tomorrow. for today, what you will see is dry conditions and a pretty good warmup, 250. 40 at 6:00. by 9:00, we'll be at 45 degrees and into the 50s and still climbing at lunch time today. full seven-day forecast with a look at when you can expect that wintry weather when i come back
