nbc 10 breaking news. right now, the search is on for a man who assaulted a philadelphia police officer. police say a man punched and kicked the officer and then ran off. the presidential picture is getting a bit clearer this morning after super tuesday. donald trump and hillary clinton both dominated and remain the front-runners. and rain is moving through the area right now. it won't be here for very long. once the showers leave, expect a 20 degree temperature drop and windy day. 58 degrees at 4:00 a.m. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast. bill, i was tempted to grab the rain jacket and then i remember you saying it was going to get cold today so i went for the winter coat. >> smart move. you can see the rain falling on

the camera, this is the view from the adventure aquarium. it will be fast moving. in fact, the showers pushing through the area right now, there are heavy downpours in chester county and south jersey, moving off to the northeast at nearly 60 miles an hour. the back edge is within view. the rain won't last long. we will see brief downpours. you can see them in northern chester county and moving into upper montgomery county right now. this will all sweep out of here. then it's a windy day. in fact, it's already windy but those winds will stay with us even after the rain is gone. and it will bring in colder air. the temperatures really come down. 29 mile-an-hour wind gusts in philadelphia, topping 30 miles an hour for pottstown and allentown. millville, closer to 40 mile-an-hour wind gusts. if you're going to leave the house with an umbrella, make sure it's a sturdy one. we'll see rain showers at 6:00 and then they're sweeping out of here and brilliant sunshine will take over. look at those winds and the temperatures will be steadily dropping during the day today.

we'll go through the forecast hour by hour or the futurecast when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington is watching the wet roads this morning. >> we're watching them through center city on the vine street expressway. these are our cameras around 24th street. no problems, so far most of the majors clear. definitely wet roadways like you said. you have to watch out for the on and off ramps. the vine street expressway doing okay right now. we'll check in with drive times. the schuylkill expressway into center city, no problems there. 95 southbound from woodhaven road to the vine. the blue route still looking okay. mass transit looking okay as well. breaking news. philadelphia police are searching for the man they say punched and kicked a fellow officer and then ran from the scene. nbc 10's drew smith is live in olney. walk us through this. how did it all play out. >> this began right here on the front steps of this apartment building. we're told the officer and a

24-year-old man began wrestling, both eventually fall over the railing and on to the ground. that's when the man ran from the police. calls started to come in to 911 just after midnight for domestic abuse and somebody with a gun. it was during the course of a patdown that the physical fighting began. canine and helicopter search teams came out and searched this area. officers believe the 24-year-old was hiding in the woods or may have run into another apartment building. witnesses gave police a name and a couple of recent -- [ no audio ] being checked out at the -- to make sure injuries weren't more severe. live in olney, drew smith, nbc 10 news. 4:03. now to decision 2016. hillary clinton and donald trump

are closer to facing each other this fall after dominating the super tuesday contest. in the democratic presidential race, hillary clinton won six primaries, mostly in the south, bernie sanders scored four victories. clinton grabbed the most delegates and now has nearly half the amount needed to clinch that party's nomination. on the republican side, donald trump won six primaries. ted cruz won his home state and two others. marco rubio broke through for one victory. donald trump marches victory in palm beach, florida, last night. new jersey governor chris christie introduced trump. the billionaire businessman toasted his role as the gop front-runner. >> this isn't like it's a close match. it's only too bad that winner didn't take all. because if winner took all, this thing is over, we're just having a celebration. >> ted cruz did what he said he had to do to stay in the republican race. the texas senator won his home state, tacked on oklahoma and

alaska. cruz told reporters last night he expects to be in a one-on-one contest with donald trump very soon. marco rubio notched his first win of the 2016 election campaign by taking the minnesotç caucus. the florida senator is vowing to stay in the race and win his home state where voters go to the polls in less than two we s weeks. the former secretary of state celebrated with supporters in miami last night. clinton delivered a message of inclusion that some analysts saw as a dig on donald trump's stance on undocumented immigrants and undocumented refugees. >> trying to divide an america between us and them is wrong and we're not going to let it work. >> senator bernie sanders won his home state of vermont. he took democratic contests in oklahoma, colorado and minnesota. ahead in our next half hour, you'll hear from sanders and ted

fire is now under control. skyforce 10 flew over the scene last night in millville, cumberland county. fire started in a trailer around 3:30 yesterday afternoon and the flames spread from the trailer to the forest. four mobile homes were damaged in more than 75 acres burned. no be was hurt. a new grand jury report claims predator priests acted for years in pennsylvania with the help of diocese leaders. the report claims that two catholic bishops in the altoona johnstown diocese helped cover up the abuse of hundreds of children by more than 50 priests or religious leaders over a 40-year span. eight counties in pennsylvania make up the diocese of altoona and johnstown. the report was made public yesterday by kathleen kane. she said church leaders placed their desire to avoid a scandal over the well-being of innocent children. >> we get to be their voice. we get to speak for the

powerless. we get to speak for children who are now grown adults. but were literally killed as children.ç >> kane says no criminal charges are being filed because some of the abusers have died. the statute of limitations has expired or victims are too traumatized to testify. 4:08. 55 degrees outside. sam bradford will be your eagles quarterback for at least the next couple of seasons. the birds gave bradford a two-year deal for $36 million. most of that money is guaranteed. analysts say since the contract is not long term, the eagles can draft a quarterback this spring. we got reaction from fans and the birds' new head coach. >> i think it's a solid move for the eagles. >> new blood will make the eagles better instead of having the same players every year. >> sam is part of the eagle organization. what he's done in the last half hour has given him the

over mt. pocono, rain blowing through northeast philadelphia, 56 degrees. it's in the 50s in atlantic city, too. nice if it would stay in the 50s. that's not going to happen today. the winds are already blowing into town and the temperatures have been dropping, just an hour ago we were closer to 60 degrees in philadelphia. 18 mile-an-hour winds, stronger in millville at 24 miles an hour, 20 miles an hour at lancaster and we have higher gusts closer to 40 miles an hour this afternoon. snow to the west. there's the cold that we're going to feel later on. this is what we're dealing with right now. it's light rain but a blowing rain in philadelphia, with some heavy downpours, moving through upper chester county, into montgomery and bucks county. phoenixville, you're about to hear the rain come down heavier. same story in limerick, marlboro and richland, the rain will tensefy in the next couple minutes. 5:00 this morning, the rain will be done in doylestown and pottstown. the futurecast shows itç sweep

4:15 and 55 degrees. look at this video. it's dashcam video, seven people are behind bars this morning after a police chase through montgomery and chester counties. four of the suspected thieves ran from an suv as it stopped in the eastbound lanes of the schuylkill expressway near belmont yesterday. skyforce 10 was over the scene as police tried to track the suspects down in glad wynn. the chase started at a wendy's in tredyffrin township. the four people who ran were eventually caught, three others arrested where the chase started. police believe the group is connected to the felony lane gang, a nationwide crime family known for stealing license plates and breaking into cars. a half dozen newspapers in new jersey are jointly calling

for governor chris christie to resign. here's part of their editorial from yesterday. for the good of the state, it's time for christie to do his long-neglected constituents say favor and resigns agovernor. if he refuses, citizens should initiate a recall effort. the asbury park press accused christie of putting personal ambition ahead of the interest of new jersey citizens. the paper also called him out for endorsing presidential candidate donald trump. christie refused to take any questions from the reporters that didn't deal directly with the topic of the news conference which was the judicial nomination. >> i won't permit you to. i told you there will be only on-topic questions today.ç permission denied. >> he's a little more than half wai through his second term. a new governor will take office in january of 2018. nbc 10 reached out to governor christie and office for comment on the editorial. if and when we get a response,

bin laden's last wish was to use millions of dollars of his personal fortune to page jihad or a holy war. the u.s. government released bin laden's last will and testament yesterday, special forces seized it during the 2011 raid that killed the al qaeda leader. bin laden claimed that he had close to $30 million and the will stated that he wanted the majority of that money spent on the terror network behind the 9/11 attacks. now to severe weather hitting the pacific northwest. strong winds knocked down trees and power lines in seattle, leaving thousands in the dark. crews worked through the night to restore electricity in oregon, winds caused a huge treç to fall in the back of his home. no one inside was hurt. and new tests show california is way below normal for snowfall in february. and that means officials are worried about a drought. in normal years, the snow pack supplies about one-third of california's water needs as it melts and runs off into the reservoirs. water officials say it's time to conserve.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> snowfall is down, rainfall is down but they are still way ahead of last year. but the drought is so strong, it's been going on for so long, it will take a long time to recover. no sign of drought here. rain sweeping through the area, the clouds on the move. that's the view from the comcast center. 56 degrees. what a warmup. that's 14 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. it will not last. the wind out of the west at 18 miles an hour, that's the wind that will drive in colder air and that's what we're going to feel as soon as the rain ends and the rain will be ending first thing this morning. we'll see sunshine in this view from the adventure aquarium. here's the tail end of the rain. it's ending in berks county and lancaster, just a few springs, heavy downpours in northern new castle county. the rain will be gone by the middle of the commute, if not a little bit more earlier. the cold air to follow. you can see it's producing some

snow to the west. the main event will probably hold off until friday, early friday morning. we're watching snow and rain that will be coming together for our area late thursday evening. tomorrow night at 11:00, some very light snow starting to move into philadelphia, delaware and southeastern pennsylvania. we'll see that light snow overnight. but there's a good chance we'll see rain mixing in by friday morning. so it might be a little bit of a messy start. we're talking very light precipitation here as we go into friday. by friday afternoon, it's done and we're drying out as we head into the weekend. for today, we will be drying out, thanks to gusty winds. the rain will be sweeping through the area first thing this morning. winds of 25 miles an hour, gusts as high as 40 miles an hour in some spots this morning. 52 degrees at 6:00. the temperature comes down, 40 degrees, feels like it's in the lower 30s with winds and 42 degrees at noontime today with plenty of sunshine.
