motive. nothing was stolen from this restaurant during the crime last night. the one employee who was with the victim just before she was found dead is the one person police want to speak with tonight. philadelphia police say this person of interest goes by the name noel t grainy head shot may offer the best lead yet in the murder of a cook here at lee's cafe last night, as customers dined and restaurant workers bustled around just upstairs. >> it makes me sad. >> andy is a neighbor and restaurant regular. investigators say around 9:00 last night the victim, 54-year-old thoung nguyen, was working in the basement kitchen with the person of interest, when a food order never came up, the owner went down to check and discovered nguyen dead of a deep cut to her throat. >> in addition to her throat being slashed, she also had some

facial injuries, we know it was a violent struggle. >> be mindful of what's going on around me. pay attention. >> reporter: harry was walking home last night when he stumbled upon the scene. on the victim's block of emily street, neighbors described an unassuming and hard working woman who spent many long days in the kitchen where she was killed. >> yesterday about 10, 10:30, yes. she was -- right on 21st going to the car getting ready to work. >> reporter: the neighbors describe that victim as hard working, we know the person of interest often drives a white suv, and it seems that neither the other employees nor the customers who were eating here heard anything unusual as the crime unfolded just about two floors below the dining room here. reporting live in south philadelphia, george spencer,

"nbc 10 news." >> right now at 5, is a knife now in the hands of the los angeles police department connected to the murders of o.j. simpson's ex-wife and her friend? police confirm they are testing the knife reportedly discovered near simpson's former mansion. chris pollone reports. >> reporter: is knife is being tested to see if the it's connected to the murder of nicole brown simpson and ron goldman. >> they are going to study it and examine it for all forensicings. >> reporter: police confirm the story first reported by tmz that a former lapd cop recently turned the knife over to detectives. the officials say that officer claims he was working off duty on a movie shoot near simpson's former home 12 years ago when a construction worker gave him the knife. >> he claimed that an individual who claimed to be a construction worker provided him with this knife, claiming it was found on

the property. >> not guilty of the crime. >> reporter: a jury acquitted simpson of all charges in 1995, since then the case has remained open, the murder weapon has never been found and investigators are treating this discovery with skepticism. >> we need to, one, determine is this evidence, and if the it's not evidence how do we prove one way or the other it's not. the only way we can do that is by being able to challenge the people involved as to what -- where it was recovered, how long, where it was alleged to have been, et cetera. >> reporter: o.j. simpson is in prison for an unrelated conviction, under the constitution he cannot be retried for the murders regardless of whether the knife is indeed connected to the case. chris pollone, nbc news, new york. coming up, a local criminal defense attorney will talk with us about this new development and the impact on the high profile case. now it's your first alert forecast.

parts of the region look more like a scene out of a winter movie, snow falling through the morning here at the boardwalk in ocean city. it was a snowy walk to work in philadelphia. nbc 10 at 18th and market as flurries fell in center city. now we've got a bunch of sunshine to replace those flurries. sheena parveen is joining us now. >> a lot of that snow has melted but we have to watch for aisles later on. >> that's true. with the snow melt we have puddles, we have wet sidewalks and roads and new jersey and delaware we had slushy areas too. now the storm has moved offshore but the ice threat will be with us through the overnight hours and early tomorrow morning. temperatures will be dropping below freezing. so that's going to be the concern there. over the weekend we have this clipper system. wi it will move through into sunday. the best chance for showers early sunday morning. so i'll show you the timing of that coming up. temperatures right now if you are about to go out any time soon, we're in about the upper

30s to low 40s across the area. mid-30s for south jersey and delaware especially along the shore where we have more snow. so these numbers will be dropping as we go through tonight. so if you have the friday night plans make sure you have the thicker jacket. it's going to get cold, feel like winter again but next week we have big changes coming. by 7:00 p.m., cold, 35 degrees by 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 around the philadelphia area we should be at freezing. so icy spots already trying to develop. if you are in new jersey and delaware you can bet the slush still in spots will also be icing over. be careful tomorrow morning aside from that i'll show you the timing of the showers early sunday and a big warm-up coming, that's straight ahead. >> thanks, let's head over to tim furlong, he has been following the snow across the state. snow is disappearing and people hoping it stays away for good. >> reporter: we had to move quickly to go up and down to find the snow as it was falling. basically here in middletown you

see what's left. nothing. the garden here, that's snow that fell this morning but yeah, at some point we cut our losses and went right to the town that got the most snow. driving through new castle and kent counties not much snow so we went south to milton, the spot in delaware that got the most snow almost six inchings. you can see the snow, the wind whipping through neighborhoods too. down town tough to find much snow. that's in part due to the business owners who shoveled it up. >> we're clearing sidewalks to get business now. >> reporter: pc is a new fishing supply shop. snow, even a little, is a foot traffic killer. >> yes. absolutely. no question. i want people walking up and down the sidewalks because people walk big gives us our best business. >> reporter: most people here and in most other parts of delaware seem very ready for winter to go bye-bye. >> yeah. it's march.

it's time. it's over. >> reporter: and i did get to stop at the dog fish store so i'm not complaining. i'm not complaining about hanging out in middletown though it's cold. a cupful school delays but the roads are still wet so there's going to be refreezing so you need to be careful on the delaware roads. tim furlong, "nbc 10 news." in chester county three high school students are facing criminal charges after authorities say a hazing incident turned violent in a boys locker room. the allegations around the football team at conestoga high school. three 17-year-old football players held down a 14-year-old and violated him with a broom handle. it happened on what the team allegedly called no gay thursday. the district attorney says the investigation reveals a hazing culture that goes back years. >> coaches were never in the locker room. the kids knew the locker room

was theirs. the locker room was theirs to do what they wanted, when they wanted, and how they wanted. >> the head football coach has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. you may remember this school district was involved in another criminal incident last fall, in november police arrested four middle school students accused of sending pornographic images and videos to their classmates. some of the students were as young as 11. >> a philadelphia doctor accused of writing prescriptions for kafrnlt according to police undercover officers began investigating dr. edwin rothman in 2013. a search warrant was issued on his ridge avenue office in east falls yesterday. it was empty, no staff, no computers and limited medical equipment. rothman was taken into custody and is now charged with a felony. >> the philadelphia police department has 15 new officers.

nbc 10 was at the fraternal order of police lodge in northeast philly this morning for the graduation ceremony. these new cadets completed eight months of training at philadelphia police academy. mayor jim kenney stopped by a pre-k program today. this one was a little different than the rest. it's located inside of a house on 71st avenue. it's called love you stars of tomorrow. he likes the home setting and believes it made the children seem more comfortable. yesterday mayor kenney pitched his plan to increase pre-k spending 2$256 million over fiv years, that would create 25,000 new pre-k seats. he wants a new tax on sugary drinks. >>. >> we've seen it and shown you medics and police officers bringing overdose victims back to life. now doctors want you to get

the los angeles police department says a retired officer has turned over a knife that he claims was found on the site of simpson's former mansion. >> according to investigators the lapd became aware of the knife over the past month but may have been found several years ago. o.j. simpson was acquitted of murder in the deaths of nicole brown simpson, his ex-wife, and ronald goldman, her friend, more than two decades ago. a jury later found him liable for their deaths. i spoke with a criminal defense attorney about today's revelation from the lapd and what it means in the case that is still making headlines. >> concerns about contamination t testing is going to be dna, that's where the contamination

concern comes in. see if the blood matches the victims. that could have been contaminated. the other testing is going to be the type of blade compared to the type of wound, to see if that would be a match. and that one won't have as much issues with contamination but the dna would have concerns about that. >> double jeopardy absolutely attaches, he has been tried and acquitted by a jury of his peers, he cannot be tried again at this point even if more evidence comes out. i guess the only concern would be public perception if the people believe he might be innocent, but he cannot be tried again in a criminal court of law. he could face withholding evidence or tampering with evidence. as a police officer he should have known this is evidence in a murder investigation. the trial might have been oat ver but they had this as an open case. at that point they extended resources to find other suspects. they could have maybe put it

toward other cases. they didn't know about this evidence that did exist. >> later at 5:45, the lead prosecutor in the o.j. simpson trial speaks exclusively with "dateline nbc." who marcia clark says made the decision to try on the infamous glove. >> two firefighters are recovering after a house explosion in adams county, pennsylvania. called their gas company after noticing the smell of gas just before the fire. then they called the fire department. when the fire truck arrived there was an explosion in the home. >> tomorrow a new s.a.t. tqáu rolls out and students in our area will be among the first to try their hand at the newly redesigned test. the notable changes they see, the test has fewer questions. the essay portion is no longer mandatory and a perfect score will be 1600 instead of 2400. pennsylvania is putting more people back to work.

i'll show you the timing coming then we have a warm-up coming next week, we're going to be around 70 degree, and then even one day in the low 70s, really going to feel like spring next week. we're in the 30s north and west, mostly mid to upper 30s, 40 in philadelphia, mid 30s through much of south jersey and delaware. and all of these numbers are going to drop below freezing as we go through tonight. look at the temperature trend. we get closer to 11:00 p.m. right around freezing, then after that we keep going down to about the upper 20s, so this is really the time frame when we expect areas of ice to be forming from any wet sidewalks or wet roadways or any slushy areas that are still there that have not dried out from today. so keep that in mind late tonight and early tomorrow. a storm system that brought us the snow this morning that's moved offshorement it's going to keep moving away. we're going to stay dry. our next system that's approaching the great lakes, this one is going to move through overnight into early sunday morning so this is the one that will be providing us with early sunday showers, not a

big system but i think it will showers come sunday morning. this ij future weather here. so tonight we stay dry, we go into tomorrow morning, look at the temperatures, below freezing by 8:00 in the morning, still seeing areas of ice possibly. through the afternoon we're dry but we're cloudy, then we go into late saturday night, early sunday morning so 7:00 a.m. now and there is that system i was talking about. that clipper approaching. so rain and snow showers in the forecast, doesn't look like much. we start to clear out more through the afternoon. now computer models are not showing much with this. so this is really how little they are showing, less than an inch north and west of philadelphia. we could see a bit of a mix around the philadelphia area, rain snow mix in what a lot of the models are hinting at. we'll watch that closely. now we're looking at monday, tuesday and wednesday, here is the big warm-u( into next week. it's going to come with sunshine too. not rain. not yet. at least on these days, so we're going to see nice warm temperatures, monday, tuesday and wednesday. but each day next week we're going to get each warmer and by

wednesday we'll be in the low 70s believe it or not. it's going to feel like spring. nice forecast to look forward to. tonight it's going to feel like winter. mostly clear skies, theches below freezing, upper 20s philadelphia. then tomorrow cloudy and cold, the mid to low 40s through the afternoon. and then we'll be watching the small system as we go into the weekend. saturday night into sunday morning a chance of early showers around. we stay in the 40s on sunday, 47 degrees and then look at the jump to monday, 60 degrees on monday. near 70 on tuesday, low 70s on wednesday, that is a beautiful wednesdahe that is a beautiful beginning of next week. >> haven't seen 70s in a while. thanks. anybody sick of winter? right here. we can get an early taste of spring as the philadelphia flower show kickings off this weekend. how this year's show will pay tribute to some of america's greatest natural wonders. plus taken to court over tampons. a group of women filed. that's coming up.

lots of sunshine out there. it did not take long as ted õmention forward the snow to melt. a live look at our camera at cape may. >> meteorologist sheena parveen joins us to tell us more about the concerns for the commute home. we're talking about the ice. >> yeah, that wouldn't be until +ery late tonight. so we are going to keep drying. it will continue to melt this evening and then tonight we're õgoing to see a lot of those we spots freeze over. the storm that brought all of this is offshore, it's going to keep moving away. then another system approaching the great lakes, this one will be for overnight saturday into early sunday. it's a small clipper system providing us i think with very light showers that i'll show you the timing coming up. right now temperatures are above freezing but we're going to be dropping colder overnight. that's why we have the ice threat. if you are about to head out soon in philadelphia and wilmington we're at 40 degree, millville 36, even dover, 34 atlantic city and wildwood.

in the lehigh valley we're close to 40 for allentown and reading. tonight it's just going to get colder but about mostly clear skies. so by 7:00 p.m., 35 degrees, it will stay cold, colder by 11:00 p.m., 32, that's when i think we'll see a lot of icy spots @c starting to develop on any wet roads or sidewalk. more clouds and it will stay cloudy for saturday, all ahead of that other system as we go into early sunday. so i'll show you the timing on that what you may be able to expect. a warm-up into next week straight ahead. we're following breaking news now from the conservative political action. drnz has dropped out of the presidential race. he said earlier this week he could not see a path to victory because he had not picked up states during the caucuses or

stretch of the election season after last night's debate turned into what some call a real brawl. >> for more let's bring in jim schultz. jim t insults were flying on the stage last night. is this kind of back and forth helping the candidates or is it hurting them? >> it really turned into a middle school food fight for sure. and i think it's probably not going to hurt donald trump because they are used to it. the american voters are used to seeing this from donald trump. but from ted krutz who was a former supreme court clerk of the u.s. senator and the aspirational senator marco rubio it could backfire on them for sure. >> let's talk about the republican officials, the party is panicking about t$e possibility of trump winning the nomination, they are outlining "t(jjuu)jy today senator ted cruz said that idea would be a disaste). talk to us about what it would mean if no candidate secures the nomination ahead of the convention.

>> ahead of the convention the number for delegates is 1237. if you don't make 1237, in the romney plan quote unquote works then you go to what is contested i don't believe we'll end up getting that far, i don't think many believe they will get that far. that assumes that marco rubio -- that donald trump wins florida and not marco rubio. and it also assumes that donald trump loses ohio, both places donald trump is ahead. let's assume for a second that they don't. what happens in advance of the convention or at the convention, rules committee is appointed, there's two delegates assigned to the rules committee. at that point that's when the rules are determined and made up and approved by the entire delegation, for what the rules of engagement will be for the brokered convention or the contested convention if you will. at that point, now we don't really know what's going to happen in contested convention until the rules are formed. but in short, you'll see a

police of#icer. one year ago saturday sergeant robert wilson ii, was shot and killed during a robbery and tomorrow his fellow officers at the 22nd district will release balloons in his honor at the exact time they lost their brother in blue. wilson and his partner were doing security checks in a north philadelphia shopping center on lehigh avenue. wilson ran into the game stop to grab a gift for his son's birthday. two armed men came into the store and announced a robbery. wilson died in a shoot-out with the men. the police department's graphic artist created this digital painting of sergeant wilson. wilson received numerous posthumous honors for his action including a medal of honor and a police hero plaque. he was also promoted to sergeant. >> a pennsylvania couple could face charges after authorities say they took in a 23-year-old ukrainian man who pretended to be a high school student. an attorney for stephanie and michael potts says the couple

those showers i mentioned early sunday morning. it's a small clipper system, we have rain and snow with it. so as it moves through our area this weekend, we could see small showers out of it. this is future weather, dry tomorrow but now we're going into early sunday morning, here is 8:00 in the morning, there you see that system approachings, possibly light snow through areas north and west of philadelphia, maybe each philadelphia area too with rain a little farther south. but then we clear up as we 2 into sunday afternoon. we go through tonight, look at how low the temperatures drop. mid-20s north and west by early tomorrow morning and the rest of the area mostly below freezing that's going to give us the ice threat. then we go sunday morning there is that clipper system moving through, some snow showers for part of the area. not everybody though. then the warm-up. monday into wednesday, we will see temperatures warming each day next week and then we'll eventually get to the 70s by wednesday with that south wind and it's going to feel like spring. good news with this warm-up too,
