♪ right now at 11:00, she redefined the role of first lady and will forever be known as political adviser and protector to the 40th president of the united states, but it was nancy reagan's love and affection for her husband ronald reagan that so many people continue to admire for years to come. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. the nation continues to pay tribute this morning to the late nancy reagan. the former first lady died this weekend in california. the flag at the u.s. capitol is flying at half-staff this morning. here is a live look at the flag in washington, d.c. house speaker paul ryan expressed condolences to the

reagan family on behalf of the entire u.s. house of representatives. we have more on how mrs. reagan is being remembered. >> reporter: late sunday the hearse carrying the former first lady's body left her home in los angeles where the 94-year-old died of congestive heart failure sunday. her daughter, patti davis releasing a blog post. i got the call around 8:30 this morning march 6th that my mother had died peacefully in her sleep. it was how she wanted to go. this morning new details are emerging about her funeral plans and mrs. reagan will be buried at the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley, california, next to her husband ronald wilson reagan. prior to the funeral service there will be an opportunity for members of the public to pay their respects at the library. tributes are pouring in remembering the first lady nancy reagan as a woman of grace and grandeur. her legacy being honored with a

moment of silence on the debate stage. democratic candidate and former first lady hillary clinton praising her predecessor. nancy a strength of character was legendary and her advocacy especially for alzheimer's research was tireless, praying for her family. along with accolades from her husband. >> she loved her husband. she loved her country, and at least with me, she was always very fair and decent, and i'll never forget that. >> reporter: president obama and first lady michelle obama releasing a statement saying our former first lady redefined the role in her time here adding and we remain grateful for nancy reagan's life, thankful for her guidance and prayerful that she and her beloved husband are together again. the first lady who succeeded her barbara bush writing, nancy reagan was totally devoted to president reagan and we take comfort that they will be reunited once more. former president george w. bush

look at this. it's already filled with construction. this is part of a long-term construction scene. that's adding to the confusion and delays and i checked the traffic cameras and no significant delays in east township. back to you. >> thank you for the update. this morning police are looking for a gunman wanted for a shooting. a teenage fast food worker in philadelphia. a customer was having dinner at the church's chicken restaurant on north bronx street when police say he got angry, pull out a gun and shot a 19-year-old employee at least three times. medics rushed the victim to the hospital where he's listed in stable condition. the gunman ran away. crime scene investigators found bullets and shell casings scattered across the restaurant. >> senseless. a senseless crime. getting shot over some chicken? come on. >> police tell us it's possible the customer got angry when employees were cleaning tables near his food. this morning investigators are

looking for a man in his late 50s or possibly early 60s. about a mile and a half away police say someone killed a woman in a second-floor apartment on north 17th street. police say the killer beat the woman with a hammer. she was pronounced dead at the scene. authorities say their initial investigation show the victim was arguing with her boyfriend before her death. so far police have not arrested anyone. and a collision this morning sent a parked car into the front porch of this house along south 28th street in gray's ferry. a fire official tells nbc 10 another vehicle hit the car and then drove off. another parked car was also hit and the crash soarsly damaged the porch and luckily no one was hurt. >> police in delaware county are investigating an accident involving a pedestrian there. this happened after midnight in providence and lansdowne avenues. we're still working to learn the victim's condition.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. and we are tracking a big warm-up this week and here is a live look outside now from the jersey shore from the lafayette hotel and nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley here with the forecast. we're in the 50s. >> a big improvement from this morning where we were below freezing for most of the area and look at the pocono mountains. this is camelback and the skiers are encountering springlike conditions today in the city, plenty of sunshine there, too. no sign of any clouds and 51 degrees and still climbing with the winds that have picked up, too. it was calm this morning for much of the area at 16 miles an hour and southwesterly wind is part of what's helping to warm us today and afternoon temperatures, in northeast philadelphia and wilmington is 51 and allentown are in the 50s and delaware, south jersey, 50s,

heading into the 60s today. the skies are cloudless and the satellite shows no cloud cover from the pocono mountains through cape may and we're on coarse for a nice monday and afternoon temperatures peaking into the 60s and dying down some this evening and though it will be cloudy with clear skies at 7:00, we will see clouds. showers with those clouds might not make it that way. the utsch foo you arecast in just a few minutes. philadelphia police hope new video can help them catch a suspect who threatened a worker with a hammer with the robbery. >> the video shows a suspect trying to leave the store with several items he hadn't paid for. the suspect threatened to use a hammer as a weapon. the suspect eventually took off, leaving behind the items he'd taken. police are also looking for

the armed suspect who robbed another family store. the man pulled a gun inside the store and demanded cash after a worker handed over the money he took off. if you happen to recognize the man you are asked to call police. new jersey transit officials and union leaders are meeting again today in newark as a strike deadline looms. both sides met on friday with a national labor board in washington, d.c. the labor dispute started brewing nearly five years ago when the last union contract expired and the unions set a deadline for just after midnight last sunday and families in philadelphia will get a chance tonight to learn a little bit more about mayor jim kenny's plan to create community schools and the group action united will release a new finding of a study done on the concept. the schools operate on the idea that schools should be community anchors. in addition to teaching children they offer resources like medical clinics or police

substations that help the neighborhood. action united gives a preview of their report. i think that it's not only going to transform what happens in schools and just what happens outside of school and around the community, as well. >> that information will be given out at sayer middle school. council woman will get feedback from parents about their neighborhood schools. >> later today some atlantic city police officers will feel more protected when they receive more bulletproof vests. the city's police foundation is donating more than a dozen rifle-resistant vests. patrol officers will wear the new body armor since they're the first to arrive on scene during active shooter situations. the pay raise is coming for pennsylvania state workers and contractors and governor tom wolf is expected to sign an executive order today that raises the minimum wage to $10.15 an hour.

that's only for employees under wolf's jurisdiction and employees of state contractors. the democratic governor has asked the republican-controlled legislature to raise the minimum wage for all workers to $10 an hour, but republican lawmakers disagree with the idea. the current rate is $7.25 an hour and one of the lowest levels in the nation. >> also happening today, you can weigh in on the future expansion of septa rail service and septa will hold its hearings on plans to bring regional rail service to king of prussia. the project would extend the norristown high speed line adding five stops including one inside the king of prussia mall. today's is the first of three. and the next one is wednesday in norristown and there is a third next week in king of prussia and we'll get the details on the free nbc 10 app. the democrats duke it out. >> some of your friends

michigan voters are about to have their say in the 2016 presidential race and candidates from both parties are making a strong pitch to win the rust belt state. vermont senator bernie sanders is holding a rally right now in kalamazoo. you are taking a live look at it right now. polls show him trailing hillary clinton. the two went toe to toe in a contentious debate. nbc correspondent tracie potts has more on the race. >> i voted to save the auto industry. he voted against the money that ended up saving the auto industry. >> reporter: auto jobs and the flint water crisis big topics in tomorrow's michigan primary. >> people are not paying a water bill for poisoned water. he's hoping to pull an upset in the state which borders his own. and he has an event at monroe county community college. >> and former president bill clinton was on the campaign trail in north carolina. he worked to get out the vote on his wife's behalf at a rally in raleigh. north carolina holds its primary tomorrow. a total of 121 delegates are at stake there. it will come to our region this spring. they will hold their primary leches on april 26th and new jersey voters go to the polls on june 7th. >> we have all of the information you need for decision 2016 and you can find it on the free nbc 10 app. this morning we're learning which towns are tops when it comes to snow totals. syracuse, new york, remains the snowiest city in america according to golden snow globe.com. more than 72 inches fell there this year. that's well below the 120 inches that usually falls on syracuse,

but still not enough for the top spot. erie, p.a. ranks in second place with more than 67 inches overall, but tops overall is the small town of perrysburg south of buffalo, get this, over 138 inches fell there. amazing. in our town, allentown recorded more than 31 inches of snow during the blizzard of 2016. the same storm brought 22 inches in philadelphia and the fourth highest ever for the city. a powerful snowstorm blanketed the sierra nevada mountain range and motorives encountered blustery and near white-out conditions there and the storm forced officials to close parts of the highway in hopes of preventing motorists from spinouts or just getting stuck. . there were reports of several minor accidents and one california highway patrolman was injured when his vehicle was rear ended. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 19 minutes after 11:00. we're seeing a pretty good warm-up today with bright, sunny skies with a spring preview. the next several days and the warming trend will continue and record warmth later this week, but this weekend, even though it's going to be mild there is a good chance we'll be seeing some rain falling and no sign of any snow. temperatures have been climbing 49 in doylestown. it was in the 20s this morning and it was down to 23 degrees in millville. sunshine in northeast philadelphia at 51 degrees and there is a lot to enjoy today and sunshine, no natural snow coming their way so they'll have to take advantage of some chilly mornings, but they're going to be few and far between over the next few weeks. right now what we're looking at are winds gusting to 20 miles an hour and near 30 mile an hour wind gusts and that's helping with the warm-up and sunny skies

and clouds to the north and the clouds that are to the west and those are rain producers and rain is moving through the midwest and we won't see the rain, but some of those clouds will be arriving tomorrow morning. that may actually help keep us warmer. for today, though, mostly sunny and warmer than it was yesterday and 47 degrees in philadelphia and breezy to low 60s this afternoon. come tomorrow with the clouds first thing in the morning and 44 degrees and sunshine is back in the afternoon and talk about a warm-up. 72 degrees the high temperature and the normal high temperature is 50 degrees and we'll be 22 degrees above that tomorrow and it is even warmer for wednesday and the record for wednesday is 73. we're hitting 76 degrees and breaking the record on wednesday and tying it on thursday. another day up to 76. there is a slight chance of a shower on thursday and more likely you will see passing clouds and the sunshine is back on friday. a little cooler on saturday and there is your chance of rain for the second half of the weekend. just rain, though.

there is a big push for students to explore careers in science, technology and engineering and math especially for girls to become interested and this weekend a program in our area will expose girl tosca rears in s.t.e.m. it's called girls exploring tomorrow's technology and she's here from the economic development countsil and 14-year-old lisa jennings. thank you both for being here. >> tell us about this event and why there's such a push to get young women and girls into math and technology, science and engineering. >> the chester county economic development council is promoting this awesome event for girls this weekend and it's the 16th anniversary and we have 600 girls from grades five through 11 from over 500 schools in the region participating in hands-on activities designed to encourage girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering

and math. we partnered with the business community who provide women, role models to help lead those activities during the day. >> lindsay, you attended this event last year. >> i did. >> tell me what you liked about it. >> i really liked seeing all of these powerful women. it was very inspiring and it taught me that girls can do anything that we put our minds to and we can be successful in fields that are predominantly, like, carried over by men. >> areas where typically where men have dominated those fields. what are you looking forward to this year? >> i'm looking forward to the exhibits they have. they always have a helicopter that flies in and that's a really fun activity. >> tell me what kind of a career you look forward to having. >> i'm currently -- i'm on the fence about two which is marine biology and aerospace engineering. they both involve exploring the uncharted and that's what science is all about. >> what have you found in going out and the trying to find

if you haven't been outside temperatures are warming up nicely out there this morning. sunny and breezy today as we take a look at the ben franklin bridge spanning from delaware into new jersey. nbc meteorologist bill henley. >> bfl day, vai. sunshine is bright and the temperatures climbing after a cold start this morning below freezing for much of the area, but look at that, barely a cloud in the sky. a little bit of haze, but that's about it. mostly sunny and into the 60s this afternoon and already up to 51 degrees and the wind is starting to kick in at 20 miles an hour and that's helping

pottstown and doylestown make it into the upper 40s and 50 in atlantic city and south philadelphia was in the 20s this morning and now 52 degrees and climbing. so sunny skies. winds out of the southwest could be gusting to 30 miles an hour this afternoon and in fact, they'll be steady at 16 miles an hour this afternoon and starting to cooldown this evening. no sign of cold, but we do have record heat on the way and the seven-day forecast, vai, with the timing of the warm-up when i come back. see you then, bill. members of a nascar team are finally in north carolina after the plane that they were on had to make an emergency landing. the plane was headed from las vegas to charlotte when someone noticed smoke in the cabin and the plane landed in memphis and the plane belongs to hendrick motorsports and the identity of the passengers have not yet been released. north korea is threatening a nuclear strike on washington and seoul over annual military

drills. south korea began drills in their defense against north korea. they called the drill nuclear war moves. they announced an all-out offensive to counter the drills. north korea routinely issues threats of military action in response to the annual exercises, but tensions are higher than normal after recent missile tests by north korea. and a volcano in central ecuador erupted this weekend sending smoke and ash high into the air. the volcano spewed lava and several fiery explosions. at one point the ash column soared more than 13,000 feet into the sky. people in a nearby community had to cover their faces when they went outside to avoid inhaling the smoke. the united states olympic committee is holding a leadership meeting today to discuss the zika virus. the mosquito-borne virus has raised concerns leading into the

summer's olympic games in rio de janeiro where the illness is prevale prevalent. olympic organizers say august is when it will be smaller. vice president joed bien visited abu dhabi's sheikh syed grand mofshg in tmosque in united ara emirates. the uae is an important u.s. gulf ally and the regional commercial hub. biden's middle east tour includes visits to israel, the west bank and jordan. happening now, statements are under way in the civil trial between pro wrestler hulk hogan and a popular website. hogan is suing gawker for publishing pictures of hogan and his best friend's wife.

7 million people saw the video. hogan said the video was made without his knowledge. jimmy carter's spokesperson says the former president needs no further treatment for cancer. he says doctors will continue to perform scans to make sure the cancer has not returned. carter is 91 years old. last august he revealed the diagnosis of melanoma that spread to his brain. four months later carter announced he is cancer-free. new this morning we're hearing from the first woman in the u.s. to get a uterus transplant. doctors today introduceded a woman identified only as lindsay. surgeons at the clinic gave her the transplanted uterus and she's doing well. >> i prayed that god would allow us to experience pregnancy and here we are in the beginning of the journey. >> the first successful birth following a transplant in 2014. women with a vitamin d

deficiency may increase the risk of multiple sclerosis in children. women of -- children of moms who were vitamin d deficient were 90% more likely to develop m.s. as adults. experts say more studies are needed to determine if increasing vitamin d lechls decreases that risk. diamonds are being used on the operating table and a breakthrough with blocked arteries connected to the heart. brittany glazer shows us how the device works. after several months of living with on and off chest pains, patsy says they got unbearable. >> i was experiencing excruci e excruciating chest pain to the point it would cut my breathing off. she saw dr. corey foster who said she was a prime example of coronary artery disease needing

yardage and touchdowns and he'll make his retirement announcement in denver later this afternoon. and the world famous, dit rod dog sled race is under way this morning. the race started yesterday in willow, alaska. 85 teams took off in a staggered start on the nearly 1,000-mile race to nome. the lack of snow in anchorage this season is not stopping race. the snow had to be shipped from fairbanks. the race is expected to crown a winner about nine days and the first look at the british royal family's recent vacation. kensington palace shared new photos of the royal family during their vacation in the french alps. the duke and duchess of cambridge and their children, george and charlotte spent time in the snowy slopes last week. the palace says it was their first vacation together as a family of four and it was the first time prince george and princess charlotte had a chance to play in the snow. very nice. happening today, dozens of delaware airmen are coming home. some 60 members of the delaware

air national guard are returning to the new castle base on two different flights. they spent the last four months in the middle east as part of operation freedom sentinel. there will be more airmen returning tomorrow and on wednesday. ♪ ♪ a rock band made up of members of the united states air force performed this morning at edison high school in philadelphia. the band, full spectrum chose edison high school for the special honor because the school lost more alumni than any other high school in the country. they made a special presentation during the concert. this weekend more than 200 guests gathered to honor local leaders and raise money for a good cause. at the go mount erie gala saturday night in philadelphia's chief education officer otis

the girl scouts of america continue to give young ladies the opportunity to shine and help make the world a better place and this morning we are thrilled to introduce you to one of our area's most distingished female leaders as well as a girl scout hoping to follow in her footsteps. the chief is at the health care community and state and the girl scouts are honoring susan in the take the lead tomorrow and she'll get a special introduction from girl scouts. thank you both for being here. congratulations first of all on the big honor. >> thank you. >> to take the lead of program and tell us what that means. what it means to be a role model to young women. >> to me, i feel like it's an opportunity to pay it forward and give back. i was a girl scout. so in my role today i'm focused on sales and business development and the very first

sale i ever made, i box of cookies. a million years ago when i was a girl scout and to me it's a great opportunity to give back and support the girl scouts. >> you'll be introducing sue tomorrow at the event and you had a chance to shadow her as well, what was that like? >> it was very informative. i saw how hectic her job is, but she's a very casual person, and i felt like we were just hanging out and not really working. >> yeah. that's really cool. and what has being in the girl scouts meant to you? what kind of impact has it meant on your young life? i've definitely learned how to make friends easier and definitely more happy. >> yeah. it's fun. >> have you learned business principles? because sue was telling me you sold how many boxes? >> over 500. >> over 500. so you've got to learn math and you've got to learn how to keep track of your boxes so that your siblings and your family are not

eating them, right? like we do in our family. so there are a lot of things that you've learned and just basic skills and life skills, right? those kinds of things. >> sue tell me what that does to young women as they prepare for their future. >> i was so impressed spending the day with amira. she has so much grace. she has so much confidence. she had to audition for the opportunity to present it at tomorrow night's event, and i can see with the positive spirit of the girl scouts that she's going to be a tremendous female leader and she already is. >> were you nervous in that audition? how many girls were you auditioning with for the privilege to introduce sue? >> i think there were, like, 25 girlse girls. wow! that's pretty daunting. >> i think one of the great opportunities this whole event is it's all run by girls and so there will be hundreds of people at the bellevue hotel tomorrow night. the whole event run by girls and raising money for camp for the

we have five kids standing there crying. that's crazy. i'm not that good of a host and so it's just a show case of talent which allows the kids to relax. their big moment is they're on national tv, oftentimes for the first time and then they're sitting there talking to me and they're going to do what they do in front of a million homes. so it's a pretty big event and it's very, very funny, though. very funny. >> in addition to the show you're also the executive producer along with ellen degeneres and you just mentioned and you're both naturally talented and funny people. were you like this as a child, steve? were you funny and crazy like some of these kids are? i might had been as a child, but we didn't have money to uncover any talent that i had. so i just played in the dirt like everybody else until i graduated, you know? no, i wasn't this spectacular as a child. i really wasn't, man. >> steve, we look forward to the

lincoln financial field and those winds will be gusting close 30 miles an hour this afternoon. we do have sunshine and plenty of sunshine today and a nice warm-up in store for this afternoon and the temps are 51 degrees in philadelphia and we will see it warm into the low 60s today and you can see boathouse row with plenty of sunshine and if you look closely you can see the flags blowing on boat house row and the wind will die down coming through tonight. sunshine will be nice and bright as we go through the afternoon. there is a closer look at the wind turbines on lincoln financial field and a little bit hazy from the zoomed-in camera and the temperatures will warm up probably another ten degrees in philadelphia and helping a lot with that warm-up, that wind at 20 miles an hour. the gusts will be stronger and then it dies down tonight. here is a live view of sunny boat house row and no problem getting into the 06s and warmer

weather is to come and here is the 20 mile an hour wind and that will continue through this afternoon. 40s and low 50s to start with into the low 60s this afternoon. you will not need your umbrella today. the nearest wet weather snow to the north. that's where you'll find the cold and we'll have to watch those showers moving into the midwest in illinois and indiana. the showers will fizzle before they get to us, but the clouds, those will hang in there and we'll see some of those tomorrow morning and bright sunshine and the clouds coming in just in time to accounta as an insulator and keeping the heat from the daytime today and then they'll be thinning out tomorrow afternoon and pretty nice weather ahead. mostly sunny skies and breezy and afternoon temperatures springlike and spring is less than two weeks away. we'll see sunshine today and again tomorrow after those clouds clear out. 72 in the afternoon and a warm one on tuesday and i'm talking
