nbc 10 breaking news. we're following breaking news from overnight. a fire in delaware county. all night firefighters have been keeping an eye out for hot spots here. the fire began with several cars, then it spread to a building. violence spikes in philadelphia, leaving six people dead. bernie sanders pulls off an important win in the race for the white house. his michigan victory gives him momentum but hillary clinton is still the front-runner on the democratic side. for the republican, trump remains the leader but ted cruz could be closing in. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm lauren mayk. let's get to meteorologist sheena parveen and that so much warmer weather. >> it will be warm today,

yesterday it was in the afternoon. today we expect record high temperatures. here's a live look outside right now. it is mild but everything very quiet. we'll stay nice and dry as we go throughout the day. temperatures quickly warm as we go through the afternoon. temperatures around the mid to upper 70s for parts of the area. those will be record high temperatures. in philadelphia, 49 degrees, 42 allentown, 46 in reading, 45 in wilmington. this is very mild for this hour of the day. we expect to keep this in the forecast for the rest of this morning, so you'll probably need a very light jacket. 39 in millville, 53 in dover, 48 mildwood, 51 atlantic city. 51 degrees also in georgetown. these numbers will be climbing very quickly as we go through the late morning hours, especially by lunch time. expect to already be in the 60s by then, maybe even upper 60s. we'll take a look at the forecast for the afternoon, the record high temperatures and the warmup continues tomorrow afternoon, too.

let's get a check of the roadways with jessica boyington. >> we are watching an accident scene that happened around 3:15, about 45 minutes or so in montgomery county on limerick on west ridge pike. this is 76, 13 minutes from the blue route to the vx. watch for the bridge closure on the falls breath that's closed for rehabilitation work until april. take the city avenue bridge for now. for the rest of the area bridges, i checked in with the tacony palmyra and the burlington bristol. no scheduled openings or no problems on the walt or the ben heading into philadelphia. on the burlington bristol, watch for construction until 5:00 this morning. another hour or so. they will be alternating lanes. lauren? >> thanks, jessica. breaking from overnight, cars go up in flames and quickly spread to a building in calbwin, delaware county.

katy zachry is live near the scene. how did they get control of this fire. >> we're hearing from firefighters it was not easy. the big concern is all the people that lived just blocks from here. just cleared from the scene, many of the firefighters from throughout dell elle county who responded as backup. what you're looking at is the area that was an all-out inferno a few hours ago. here's video from the sky. our ground crew could not get close because of safety reasons. this video captures how big and threatening this fire was. in began in the ellis business plaza near 5th. several cars first caught on fire and spread to 15 of them total. the fire spread to a nearby building. people living just a block from here were forced to cover their faces. the smell was so overwhelming. amazingly, no one was injured.

coming up at 4:30, you'll hear from the chief on scene about a serious issue they encountered while fighting this fire. reporting live in colwin borough, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. a violent day in philadelphia leaves six people dead in a matter of hours. these murders happened in six different neighborhoods across the city. skyforce 10 was over one of those killings in north philadelphia. police say someone shot two men along north van pelt street. one died and the other is in critical condition. in point breeze, police say a man who crashed his motorcycle had been shot. officers found the victim lying next to his bike near 23rd and morris, about 8:00 last night. this morning, investigators are trying to figure out if the man died as a result of the crash or the shooting. so far, police have not made any arrests in any of the murders. a man police arrested in a deadly stabbing spree in west philadelphia will face murder charges. police say the suspect attacked

three men at different locations along baltimore avenue. the last victim died after he was stabbed in the chest. nbc 10's george spencer spoke to a witness and the police, both puzzled by the violence. >> the guy who stabbed him had walked up behind him and swung him around and stabbed him and walked off. >> just like that? >> just like that. >> clearly unprovoked attacks at this point. we're not sure what the motivation is behind this. >> police arrested the suspect nearby. they say he still had the knife. the two surviving victims drove together to the hospital for treatment. new from overnight, a fire in lower marion montgomery county send two people to the hospital. we're hearing the fire started around midnight in the bedroom of a home on rainham road. no word on the cause or the condition of people who were hurt. decision 2016. donald trump keeps rolling for the republicans and on the democratic side, big wins for both hillary clinton and bernie

sanders. front-runner hillary clinton won the mississippi primary and the most delegates overall but bernie sanders scored an upset in michigan. in the republican contest, donald trump won primaries in michigan and mississippi and the gop caucus in hawaii. ted cruz came out on top in the idaho primary. trump told supporters in florida last night, he is the survivor of a stiff competition. >> we started off with 17, we're down to 4. of the 4, they're pretty much all done. okay? pretty much. they didn't do so well tonight, folks. i'm not going to say anybody didn't do well. they didn't do well. >> trump claims he is akt traing more independent and democratic crossover voters than just about any republican candidate ever. now a closer look at the democrats. where senator bernie sanders won the michigan primary in a close contest with hillary clinton. >> i just want to take this opportunity to thank the people

today we start mild and we'll be warmer with record highs. look north and west. allentown, 42 degrees. 46 in reading, 45 pottstown. even mid-40s in the poconos. philadelphia coming in at 49 degrees right now. we do already have some 50s on the map this morning. dover, 53 degrees. 51 atlantic city, 39 millville, always a cooler spot in new jersey. 48 degrees in wildwood. maybe a light coat this morning. you definitely will not need it this afternoon. we'll be warmer than we were yesterday afternoon. as we go through the morning, :00, low 50s, kind of mild to start your day. by 10:00 a.m., already around 60 degrees. by noon we will already be around 70 degrees. it is going to be warmer this afternoon. we expect to be topping out with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. these will be record high temperatures today. sunny skies, dry conditions. it's going to get warmer, not just today do we expect record highs but also as we go into the

day tomorrow. two days of record warmth in the forecast and keep in mind, the normal high for this time of year, that's 50 degrees. we are going to be almost 30 degrees above that over the next two days. and then we see our next rain chance coming in just in time for the weekend. coming up, we'll take a look at the warm air in place for the rest of the week and that next rain chance. that's straight ahead. >> thanks, sheena. 4:09. time to take a look at the roads. jessica boyington keeping an eye on that for us. jessica, what are you seeing on 95? >> this morning it's dealing with ongoing construction right now. some things that are brand new as well. 95 around cottman avenue. you can see in terms of drive times and volume we are seeing no problems so far in either direction, into center city, 13-minute trip. watch out for new construction, north and southbound on 95 it's going to be one lane between allegheny avenue and girard avenue. and also we have some of those ramp closures from 95 northbound, also aramingo and a

new one at cottman avenue, the off ramp from 95 northbound. closed until 5:00 this morning. about another hour or so for that cleanup. one lane between allegheny and girard. possibly delays hned that. out in montgomery county, there's an accident in limerick. here's 422 doing great here so far. no problems with the drive times yet, eastbound from 29 to the schuylkill expressway is a nine-minute trip. average speeds in the 50s or 60s. pretty much the same if you're going east or westbound on 422. no problems. that will be back in the next ten with a check on mass transit. lauren? >> thanks, jessica. what would you do if you found a bag of money? >> i thought i hit the lottery last night, i can tell you that. >> we'll hear from the delaware county man about why he decided to turn that money into police. and awe water scare in one bucks county town has some home owners panicking and one lawmaker crying foul.

of those already here. u.s. attorney general loretta lynch does not want to be considered for the supreme court vacancy. some groups were pushing to name her the first african-american woman to the court to replace late justice antonin scalia. she is honored to serve as attorney general and committed to serving out the remander of her term. opponents of a controversial symbol on the mississippi state flag are taking legal action to try to get it removed. 15 years ago, state voters decided to keep the confederate battle emblem on their flag. mississippi is the last state to have the emblem. a lawyer who filed a federal lawsuit claiming the emblem is unconstitutional and a danger to african-americans led supporters at the state capitol yesterday. a south carolina lawmaker who saw his own state flag with the symbol removed last year had a message for mississippi's governor. >> urging to exhibit true leadership, not leadership in

name only. >> i don't think that the lawsuit will go anywhere. i think the judge will look at this as a state issue. >> flag supporters like that last man believe the confederate battle emblem is a symbol of history and heritage. a mayor in bucks county is blaming a marketing tool for worries over the drinking water in his township. hundreds of flyers labeled professional water services recently showed you on door steps in bensalem. these pamphlets urge home owners to leave out water samples for testing but the fine print says the company is not associated with the water company or the health department. and it turns out the company sells water purification equipment. bensalem's mayor says these flyers sparked needless panic. >> seniors looking at that kind of get scared. >> it's very misleading. upon first look it doesn't look like it's any one company. it looks like it's being done on

music they love to play. lately challenges with tight budgets mean having to think harder to find a way to keep the classes going. ♪ ♪ and i love it ♪ and i love it >> a few years ago here at the franklin learning center in north philadelphia, there weren't enough instruments to go around. they sought out donations as a way to fund the music program there. one group that's been helping schools throughout the country, called little kids rock, they've worked with schools around here giving them donations of instruments and equipment. it's critical to help out schools that are struggling to keep the arts in the classroom. >> there's a lot of research on the connection with social and emotional learning. students who participate in music are more likely to participate, show up to school, more likely to do better on standardized tests. more importantly, it allows them to express themselves in ways

they wouldn't have otherwise been able to. >> we'll hear from some of the students coming up in the next hour, what music has done for them and why this somewhat new approach is getting more kids interested in music. live in the digital operations center, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. happening today in strawberry mansion, philadelphia mayor jim kenney will begin the count june to the ninth annual philly spring cleanup. the goal of the event is to rally residents and organizes to sign up to volunteer for the citywide cleanup. that take place next month. we've been enjoying spring-like temperatures and today it could feel a bit like summer with the numbers that meteorologist sheena parveen has been showing us. she joins us now with what to expect in your neighborhood. >> i think compared to what we have seen recently it will be so warm that it probably will be feeling more like summer, spring-like temperatures. we are going to be closer to 80 degrees for the next couple of days, might certainly be feeling like summer to you since you

probably haven't broken out the short sleeves and shorts in a while. we're looking at record high temperatures, not just today but tomorrow, too. we have a very warm air mass moving in. that's beginning to put us about 30 degrees above normal for this year time of the year. we'll stay dry, too. as we go into the weekend, we have rain chances moving in for part of your week. not going to be a washout. 42 allentown, 45 in pottstown, 49 in philadelphia. also in glassboro, 51 atlantic city, 53 in dover, millville always the cool spot. around 39 degrees this morning. we will be quickly warming up as we go through the morning hours. take a look at 6:00 a.m., around 50 degrees. by 10:00 a.m. we should already be close to 60 degrees. then by noon, close to 70 degrees and we'll be topping out in the mid-70s as we go through the afternoon today. it will be warm. if you really liked yesterday, i thisty you're going to like today. a lot of sunshine in the forecast, radar on the dre side.

warm air continues to move in, that big area of high pressure still sitting there, still responsible for our warm temperatures. that southwest wind is going to keep giving us the record high temperatures in the forecast. take a look at record highs. for today, record highs 73. forecast 78. coatesville, record high 76. forecast 77. pretty much most of the area will be seeing record high temperatures today. even as we go into tomorrow. we are dealing with a nice warmup, unseasonably warm temperatures. yes, those record highs will stick around for the next couple days. sunny skies, warmer as we go through this afternoon. like i mention we have a rain chance coming for part of your weekend. i'll show you that in the seven-day forecast coming up. >> thanks, sheena. those numbers are unbelievable. 4:20 this morning and let's check in with jessica boyington for a look at our roads and 295 this morning, jessica, how's it looking? >> looking great so far, lauren.

we're still a little early before we start to see major problems. here's 295 around route 140 in west deptford. we currently have no problems. look at this drive time, southbound from the 42 freeway into the delaware area or over the delaware memorial bridge, a 23-minute trip. average speeds 64 miles an hour. some people are going a little quick. no problems or restrictions in the way. here's the blue route. we'll take a fly here. no problems. seven minutes headed northbound, southbound, this is where we see the delays from the schuylkill to the 95. in the morning time, this jams up first. average speeds into the 60s there as well. mass transit, we are going to end it on a good note, noen consider the problems or delays for septa, amtrak, new jersey transit, patco and d.a.r.t. i'll come back in the next ten minutes with more of your morning commute. >> let's stay on that topic of mass transit from 7:00 to 9:00 septa will do another safety blitz to reminded you not to cut across train tracks. officers will be at the fern

her private funeral is scheduled for friday. the widow of president reagan died sunday. she was 94 years old. this morning we're hearing from a dad who made the play of the game during a spring training matchup with his son. after a bat flew into the stands, he blocked it from hitting the 8-year-old and cameras captured the save. take a look. this happened during a game between the pirates and the braves in florida over the weekend. the pittsburgh tribune review released the frame-by-frame pictures that showed just how close landon cunningham came to disaster. he didn't see what happened because he was about to send pictures to his mom. >> i didn't have a lot of time to think about it. it just -- the only thing i can describe it as is dad mode. >> i asked my dad, is this usually what happens at baseball games? >> well, i guess when you're in dad mode it does. landon got to keep the bat as a souvenir which could also serve

nbc 10 breaking news. we're following breaking news from overnight. a car fire that spread to a building in colwyn. nbc 10 is live at the scene, talking to firefighters who are still there, five hours later. decision 2016. the race for the white house on both the republican and democratic side is getting closer. we're breaking down the winners from yesterday's contests. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm lauren mayk. let's start off with a look at our roadways this morning as we

hit just about 4:30. jessica boyington joining us for that. what are you finding? >> we're doing okay so far, heading through center city right now. this is the vine street expressway around 24th street. these lanes in here, that's actually headed westbound. if you're headed towards the schuylkill expressway or get to the 30th street station, no problems yet. this is typically where we see the delay in the morning time. not until the 7:00 hour or so. headed eastbound towards 95, no problems right there. and the full stretch on the vine street expressway from the schuylkill to 295, just under a five-minute trip. here's the schuylkill, average speeds in the 60s. no problems on 95. we'll go over some of the construction when i come back in a few minutes. for right now, let's check out the blue route. 15 minutes southbound from the schuylkill to 95. the area bridges, no real problems or delays right now. watch for construction on the burlington bristol until 5:00 this morning. another half an hour or so. watch out for a
