nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 11:00, saying good-bye to nancy. it's the finale of a week-long celebration of the life of the former first lady as family and friends pay their last respects. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. in just a few hours funeral services will be held for former first lady nancy reagan. nbc 10 national correspondent gina kim reports from the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley, california, where mrs. reagan will be laid to rest. >> reporter: for two days thousands paid their respects to the iconic first lady as she lay in repose inside the ronald reagan presidential library. today, hundreds of dignitaries, celebrities and political elite

will join family and friends at a private funeral to remember and honor nancy reagan. former first ladies rosalyn carter, hillary clinton, laura bush will be among the women paying respects. >> mrs. reagan was a woman of incredible strength and grace and a passionate advocate for so many issues. >> reporter: 94 years old when she died in her sleep of congestive heart failure on sunday at her home in los angeles. during her time as first lady of california, and the nation, nancy reagan was known for a lot of things, style, grace, as a fierce defender of her husband, for her just-say-no antidrug campaign, her fight against alzheimer's, for being a mother to two children and two stepchildren. >> she told me once she was not afraid to die. she said i don't want it to hurt, but i'm not afraid to die. i'll see ronnie again. >> reporter: the service will feature patriotic music, bible

fattah denies the charges. we have a crew inside the courtroom right now and we'll bring you any updates as we get them on air and on the nbc 10 app. new information now on a story we've been following since early this morning. police were looking into a report of a woman abducted from a septa bus on east roosevelt boulevard in olney. the driver says the man came up alongside the bus and smashed a window next to where the woman was sitting. when she got off the bus driver says the man punched the woman and dragged her into his car. investigators now say a woman has come forward claiming that she is the woman in question. she stated that she was not abducted. police say the investigation is ongoing. and trent police are searching for the gunman who shot four people as they sat on their front steps. police were called to oliver avenue early this morning where shell casings litter the street. an officer on the scene tells us two of the victims suffered only minor injuries. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather. cloudy and breezy out there right now. we may not be seeing temperatures in the 80s today, but we still have pretty much mild march day out there as we take a live look right now at boathouse row in philadelphia. nbc 10 meteorologist sheena parveen is here with our friday forecast. hi, sheena. >> hi, vai. happy friday. it's nice outside today, but you've probably noticed it is cooler. we're not going to hit the 80s today. we have a lot of clouds around, cold front moved through already. it's going to take the clouds with it later on this afternoon, but we're not seeing any rain with these clouds. that rain moved through this morning already. we do have kind of breezy conditions though from this cold front. more of a north and northwest wind gusting near 30 miles an hour in northeast philly right now. so today, breezy but cooler. it's already 65 in philadelphia, wilmington already near 70 degrees. most of lehigh valley in the 50s. most of the area this afternoon will remain at about the mid-60s though. yesterday we hit a high of 82 degrees. that was the record. today we're going to be down in

the mid-60s. big difference from yesterday to today. you can say good-bye to those record high temperatures. but we are still going to be above normal for this time of year. the normal high is 51 degrees. we're going to be about 15 degrees above that. but we're just not going to be as warm as we have been. coming up we'll take a look at how cool your weekend will be, colder temperatures tonight and our next rain chance over part of your weekend. that's straight ahead. thank you, sheena. septa's line back on track after power line issues forced a service suspension. trains started rolling again shortly before 6:00 a.m. problems began during rush hour last night as some commuters waited hours for a bus ride. we talked to commuters this morning and frustrations seemed to have eased. >> is this going to disrupt your day today? >> no, not at all. i'm taking a half day and then i'm going to the flower show to have some fun. >> you know, people seem to be pretty mellowed out after yesterday. so good. >> septa tells us trains on the

paoli/thorndale line are running close to schedule. courtesy mass transit back on schedule. how about the roads check in with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. >> hi, vai. nice for everyone to see that line back to normal, right? don't let this camera deceive you. just out of view there's a crash that happened on 670 -- or not 670 -- on the schuylkill expressway, 76 eastbound right around gulf mills. you can expect delays. i'm seeing significant delays, 45 minutes. our computer is saying it will take you going eastbound from the pennsylvania turnpike to 476, the blue route. so be aware of that. i'll let you know as soon as that clears. also in the last few minutes into our system a crash on 95 southbound. this is in delaware county right near the juncture of 476. that's exit 7. there's a ramp restriction associated with that. and we love seeing all of mass transit in the green because for so much of this morning the

paoli/thorndale line was out of commission and that in turn was effecting things at least last night on some amtrak lines, but everything is running on or close to schedule at this hour, vai. >> thank you, katy. meanwhile, the clock is ticking for tens of thousands of rail riders in new jersey where less than two days away from a possible nj transit rail strike. and there's word that the transit agency may begin to take steps to shut down the rails some time today in advance of that strike, but officials say it would not immediately effect service. new jersey transit will resume negotiations with the rail unions this morning. yesterday's talks ended without a deal. a strike would affect commuters in our area who use the trenton and hamilton stations and atlantic city rail line. the more than 4,000 workers have authorized a strike for 12:01 sunday morning. they've been working without a contract for nearly five years. only on 10, a man who says that he fought off an attacker with a baseball bat describes his life or death struggle.

police say last night an intruder forced his way into a house near sixth and cambria streets in north philadelphia and assaulted a woman inside. a man heard the woman yelling. >> i got that baseball bat and then i started hitting him with the baseball bat. then he took it away from me again. then i took -- threw on top of him and i grabbed him until the police come. >> the suspect is now in police custody. atlantic city's mayor and a group of residents were in the statehouse yesterday in trenton yesterday to fight a proposed state takeover of their town. they testified before a senate budget committee telling lawmakers that our financial rescue plans should not strip the resort town of its local governing power. the state has offered two bills, one would prevent casinos from sinking into further debt by

winning hefty tax appeals, but the other is a takeover the mayor and residents say violate their civil rights. >> we are not going to give a government more money just to spend it. >> we're at war against this legislation to take away our sovereignty and our right to vote. >> lawmakers could vote on the a.c. rescue legislation next week. meanwhile, hundreds of people including many first responders gathered in burlington county last night to honor the life of new jersey state trooper sean cullen. the candle lit vigil was held at the fallen officers memorial in westhampton. trooper cullen was killed monday as he was responding to a car fire on interstate 295. a passing driver struck him as he was standing on the highway. his family remembered him as a brave and ambitious young man. and there will be a life celebration and viewing for trooper cullen on sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on monday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the st. charles borromeo

donald trump picked up an endorsement from another former rival. dr. ben carson threw his support behind donald trump at a news conference in palm beach, florida. carson told reporters there's a side of trump the public doesn't see. >> there are two different donald trumps. there's the one you see on the stage, and there's the one who's very cerebral, sits there and considers things very carefully. you can have a very good conversation with him. >> carson says the public will start seeing the cerebral side of trump more and more. and another former republican candidate is teaming up with the current candidate on the trail, this is a live look at the scene in orlando where carly fiorina will be attending a ted cruz rally. fiorina endorsed cruz earlier this week. last night's republican presidential debate was a toned down affair compared to most of the previous skirmishes on stage. no nasty insults, no raunchy comments. for the most part the candidates peacefully discussed the issues

minister justin trudeau. the two leaders and their first ladies posed for an official photo before heading into the east room for the dinner with 200 invited guests. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, big difference as we go from yesterday to today. we had a record high of 82 yesterday. today we're going to be in the 60s. here's a live look out cape may. beautiful view here. the clouds finally starting to break up. so we'll see more sunshine this afternoon. much cooler weather though even though we're still above normal for this time of year. cooler compared to the 80s we had. tonight though some areas will be in the 30s, so it's going to get colder. and over the weekend it will stay cooler, but we do have another rain chance coming mostly as we go later into the day sunday. live look out at center city. there you see the clouds kind of thinning out, breaking up a bit. so we are seeing more sun. temperature now in philadelphia 65 degrees. a north wind, so that is pulling in a cooler air mass for us.

and it's still a little breezy sustained at 17 miles an hour. north and west through the lehigh valley, mid-50s allentown, 59 pottstown, much of jersey and south delaware in the mid-60s. wilmington though about 69 degrees. most of us will be in just about the mid-60s throughout the afternoon hours. here's a look at satellite and radar. no rain. we had a few light showers move through this morning, but the cold front has moved through. and now we're just left with some cloud cover. but we will be clearing through the afternoon. so noticeably cooler today. that's because of that switch in wind direction behind the cold front. and tonight temperatures will be dropping down a little more so. some areas will be in the 30s, mid-30s through parts of the lehigh valley. then we go into your saturday. it's still going to be on the cooler side. we still expect 60s, but it's going to be a nice day saturday. plenty of sunshine for the start of your weekend. then we go into sunday and there's our next rain chance. you start to notice some showers. it will mostly be later in the day sunday and carry over into

your monday. for today though clouds with increasing sunshine, cooler and breezy through the afternoon 64 to 67 degrees. and by cooler, well, that's comparing it to yesterday and the day before where we had 80 degree temperatures across the area. so the normal high's actually 51 degrees. we're still going to be 15 degrees above where we should be, but it does feel cooler when you factor in those mild and very warm temperatures we had over the past couple days. over the weekend we are nice and dry saturday. sunday a chance of showers later in the day, mid-60s. then we spring forward sunday morning. so, yes, we lose an hour of sleep. but sunset will now be around 7:00 at night instead of 6:00. but the rest of next week doesn't look too bad. all right, thank you, sheena. thousands of people are forced from their homes because of record flooding in the south. and water rescues continue today. when that region may finally see some relief from that drenching rain. and later, pizza, pasta on the plan for lunch today, make

george burr riel is the chief operating officer of universal companies putting on this event. george, thank you very much for being here. just a matter of full disclosure, renowned music producer kenny gamble and his wife are the founders. and they're really committed to improving the life of people in our community. so tell us about the event and tell us why it's geared for men. >> well, you know, health and wellness has been a preferred interest for a very long time. 19 years ago she started this wellness breakfast because in the work she'd done discovered that men are less likely than women to go get health checks, less likely to go to hospitals, and so they really need to be prodded along to take care of their health. so we began this practice to begin doing workshops, educating men about preventable diseases, giving them health screenings and things while they were at these breakfasts. they started 19 years ago. more than 2,500 men have come

through the program, since then we started out doing it at our headquarters down at 15th and kathrine street in southwest center city. we are moving it this year out to reed high school which has a larger capacity. and we invite everyone to come, age is not a matter. it will be a really productive day. >> why is it that men are so reluctant to go get health screenings? i'll tell you as a young man i grew up unlike a lot of people who grew up in the city without health insurance, my family didn't have health insurance. we were very reluctant to go in and get health screenings. but what other reasons why people, men, why would they be reluctant to go take care of their health? >> you know, it's interesting. i'm not sure it's an issue of reluctance as it is a lack of understanding than necessity. you know, we're all tough guys. we get an ache we think it's going to go away. we just don't pay attention to

it. >> aspirin, rub a little dirt on it -- >> i don't think it's a fear factor. i don't think -- you know, i think we just kind of look at the schedule and say -- and it doesn't have anything to do with economic status. it's across the board. professional men, nonprofessional men, people who live in poverty, all of us are less likely to show up at the hospital or at the doctor on a regular basis than women are and she understood this. and we really do try to push the folks that there are some preventable diseases out there that impact the african-american community, men and women, and other minorities much more than other communities. >> what are some of the biggest threats and challenges facing men today? >> you know, the standards blood pressure, heart issue, those are probably the two biggest ones. sugar diabetes, there's also one that deals with african-american men more than many others, but i

now -- or colder, i should say, right now. in the lehigh valley, up to the poconos, philly about six degrees cooler than this time yesterday. 59 pottstown, 65 philadelphia, 64 millville, 61 in wildwood. it's going to stay in the 60s for most of the area this afternoon. that's that cooler air mass that moved in. this morning a few light showers, it was part of a cold front. the cold front has moved through and now we're left with some cloud cover, but the clouds are breaking up. and we'll see gradual clearing as we go through the afternoon. this is a live look at center city from the adventure aquarium in camden across the delaware river. some big improvements from what we saw earlier this morning. as we go through the day today, it's going to be a nice day just cooler when compared to the 80s we had yesterday. by noon, by lunchtime still mid-60s, cool and breezy. by 4:00 p.m. we should be seeing a lot more sunshine, 66 degrees. and later on tonight if you have the friday night plans, it's going to get colder by 9:00 p.m.

around 51. so kind of chilly. but then overnight tonight some areas will be in the 30s to start off your saturday morning. we'll take a look at your weekend forecast in our next chance for rain coming up. thank you, sheena. there seems to be no end to the misery in flood-ravaged parts of the south. forecasters predict more rain and more rising water over the weekend. nbc's janet shamlian shows us the conditions there now. >> reporter: the rescues don't stop. life threatening conditions everywhere, from memphis to mississippi. for residents of this flood-ravaged region, it's likely to be days before they're even allowed back to see how much damage has been done. >> the last time it was over two weeks. so it's probably going to be longer than two weeks. >> reporter: some decided to ride it out now admit they put themselves in serious danger. >> the water just come so quick. it just -- you don't -- people don't understand that. i've learned a lesson. >> reporter: this is the work of the national guard right now. they're doing wellness checks in these flooded out neighborhoods to make sure people who decided

to stay are safe. national guard trucks are the only way out of flooded neighborhoods like this in bozier city, louisiana. each time a truck rolls through, stranded residents said for a ride out. >> going to have to wait a little bit longer. >> reporter: you can drive for miles and it all looks like this. >> devastating. it's devastating. nothing you can do. just keep going. >> reporter: tens of millions lost. >> i got two refrigerators in here floating around my kitchen. >> reporter: and the possession for which there is no price tag. >> it's my grandfather's bible, my mother and father's bible. it just means a lot to my family. >> that was nbc's janet shamlian reporting. the water is now receding in some areas. residents will slowly be allowed into their homes to take stock of what may be salvageable. and while we've been enjoying warm weather, this is north-central mexico covered in snow. roads, fields and houses were snow covered yesterday.

there were also strong winds that caused some trees to topple. no one was hurt but officials closed schools in eight mexican states. and police are now urging witnesses to come forward after that ambush at a cookout in western pennsylvania that killed five adults including a pregnant woman. police are still trying to identify the two suspects whom they say methodically opened fire on a backyard gathering in wilkinsburg, allegheny county, wednesday night. the district attorney calls the murders calculated and brutal. one of the victims was eight months pregnant. the medical examiner has ruled the fetus' death a homicide, which prosecutors say brings the death toll to six. three others were wounded. -- oh, there's the accident. >> and a police chase through the chicago suburbs ended in a crash. officers pursued a stolen car until it went off the road and into this field. the suspect then as you see there takes off running until finally cornered in a wooded

area. no word as to what charges the suspect will face. take a look at this scene here. more than 100 los angeles firefighters battled this massive warehouse fire overnight. the flames sent a plume of smoke into the night sky that could be seen miles away. the fire caused part of the building to collapse. fire trucks circled the building as crews sprayed water on it. no one was hurt and it's still unclear what started this fire. the number of cases of zika reported in the u.s. is approaching 200 now. health officials say all the cases were traced to travel abroad. they are pleading with congress to provide nearly $2 billion to fight the virus. republicans on capitol hill deferred that request saying leftover ebola funds can be used toward the zika outbreak. but the health officials say more is needed. and a man in south africa says his teenage son may have found a piece of debris from missing malaysian airlines flight 370. the boy found this item with a

five-digit number on it along a beach in mozambique in december. the family contacted australian aviation authorities after another piece of debris was found in mozambique. the part will be sent to australia to be examined. mh-370 vanished while flying from kuala lumpur to beijing two years ago. and today japan is marking the fifth anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami that swamped much of the country's northeast coast. the disaster on march 11th, 2011, left nearly 16,000 dead, some 2,500 have never been found. much of the coastline devastated by the tsunami remains empty except for mounds of dirt that are being piled to raise land in an effort to prevent another disaster. and french air accident investigators will release their final report on the german wings crash sunday. a preliminary report last may found the co-pilot andreas

lubitz practiced sending the deadly decent hours before the crash deciding his decision was premeditated. he'd been treated for depression. the crash killed all of 150 people onboard. and emily selky and her mother were both killed in that crash. emily graduated from drexel in 2013, and yvonne went to springfield high school in delaware county. the wounded warrior project fired two top officials today. the move came amid news reports accusing the veteran support group of wasteful spending. a network news investigation reported the network spent 40% to 50% of its money on overhead including extravagant parties. last night at the white house canada's new prime minister justin trudeau was honored at the first state dinner for a canadian leader in nearly 20 years. nbc's ron allen takes us through the event. >> reporter: a glamorous evening. the president, the prime

i went to the website. there are some exciting things about your event. >> it's a very impressive event with an impressive organization. it's going to be about 550 people downtown marriott tomorrow night raising money for innovative cancer research and patient access funded by leukemia and liymphoma society. >> there's been a lot of strides made in terms of research for leukemia and lymphoma, but there's still a lot of work left to be done, right? >> certainly. george has a great story to tell. >> yeah. i want to hear about that. is it your daughter? >> yeah. my daughter carly. >> tell us about carly and her diagnosis and what's happened. >> carly was diagnosed with a a.l.l. back in 200 when she was 2 years old. >> we're looking at pictures here of carly now. is that you there hugging her? >> that was at last year's event actually when carly was our mission honoree. >> yeah. and how's carly doing? >> she's doing terrific.

she finished her treatment in 2005, was deemed cancer free. she was left paralyzed, so she is in a wheelchair as you see in the picture. she turned 16 in august and she's driving now. she's doing terrific. she's a junior in high school. well adjusted. no boundaries. >> george, tell us what as a parent and for parents who are out there obviously with children who may be suffering through the same situations, tell us what it was like when you first learned of her diagnosis. >> scary. i mean, the thought of losing a child when the doctors first told us that that's what the diagnosis was, it's where do we go, what do we do? and we were sent to childrens hospital. and we were, you know, she immediately began chemotherapy. her what they call roadmap. and we were at her bedside, you know, day in and day out, throughout treatment. you can't explain it.

they were three times more likely to be obese. the studies authors think parents may change the way they feed their older child once a new baby is born and also found older siblings tend to be more active as they take on a care giver or teacher role. well, daylight savings time begins this weekend. we'll spring forward tomorrow night turning the clocks ahead one hour. losing an hour of sleep will certainly lead to a lot of grumpy people, but as nbc 10 national correspondent erica edwards reports, chronic sleep deprivation can raise the risk for much more dangerous side effects. >> reporter: consider this your heads-up to make sure the company coffee pot is well stocked monday morning. a new survey from account temps shows nearly 75% of employees say they yawn their way through the workday often blaming big mistakes on sleep deprivation. >> somebody paid the entire staff twice, somebody deleted an entire database.

bigger priority. erica edwards, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, hopefully you enjoy the extra sunlight though in the afternoon. i think a lot of you will. here's a live look outside right now though cape may seeing a little bit more sunshine than we did earlier today. so now that the clouds are breaking up a little bit, you'll start to notice nice conditions this afternoon, much cooler though than we had yesterday. so that's what's going to happen this afternoon and tonight. and tonight's going to be a little bit colder with temperatures in some areas dropping into the 30s for your friday night. weekend rain chances though, we have that in the forecast. not the entire weekend, but at least part of it. so i'll show you that in a second. 56 now in allentown, 65 philadelphia. 69 still in wilmington, but most of south jersey in the mid-60s, dover coming in at 64 degrees. now, this is a lot cooler than we were yesterday. we expect to stay in the mid-60s for your friday afternoon. yesterday though we did hit another record high of 82

degrees. the average high is 51. so that's where we should be this time of the year, but even today we're still 15 te grees above that and even as we go into the weekend, but it does feel cooler when you think about how warm it was yesterday. but it's still going to be a dry afternoon, the light showers this morning have moved out and now we have the cloud cover, but a lot of this is breaking up across the area. here's future weather as we go through the day clouds will continue to clear, temperatures generally in the mid-60s. so quite a bit cooler than yesterday afternoon. we go into your saturday morning, some areas mainly north and west will be in the 30s. philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs around 40 degrees saturday morning through saturday afternoon mostly sunny, temperatures still in the 60s. but then we'll see clouds moving in as we go into your sunday. now, for sunday most of the day will be dry. temperatures will be in the 60s again for an afternoon high. but now notice later in the afternoon we start to see some showers move in. that's all ahead of our next

weather system. we'll see showers sunday and that will be leading into monday to start off the workweek next week. for today though clouds moving over to sunshine, more developing sunshine through the afternoon. little breezy today with those cooler temperatures moving in. 64 to 67 degrees for an afternoon high. so relatively speaking with yesterday's high temperature of 82 degrees it is cooler outside. and it will be that way over the weekend, but then when you compare it to our normal high we're still above normal for this time of the year. we spring forward 2:00 a.m. sunday morning and you'll see the rain chance move in later in the day sunday into monday. so temperatures starting off next week around 60 degrees, but then we start to get back into the mid to upper 60s. so the rest of next week actually looks pretty nice. stay tuned. we'll be right back.
