we're following breaking news out of delaware county e. a police officer is in the hospital after getting shot in chester. we learned he was in stable condition. two suspects were shot, one is dead. it happened after 4:00 this afternoon. that's where nbc 10's randy jilli jillian haul is live. >> we're on an active scene. they're focusing on a car behind me which is where the shooting happened. i'm joined by the police chief. what can you tell us?

>> officers tried to stop a suspected stolen vehicle. when they did, there was an exchange of gun fire. one policemen shot. there are two persons from the vehicle shot. and we are currently working on the details. we're not releasing any names yet. >> reporter: you guys told us one of the suspects who was shot has died? >> yes, that's correct. >> reporter: what can you tell us about the chester police officer who was rushed to the emergency room? >> he's receiving treatment i don't know his condition because i'm here. >> reporter: was this a stolen vehicle? >> it was a suspected stolen vehicle, yes. again, that's how it started i just don't know what the status of the vehicle is. but when the officers tried to stop, they didn't cooperate. then ended up in shots fired from the car and back at the car. >> reporter: the suspects engaged in gun fire at the police officers while inside that car during the traffic stop? >> that's correct. >> reporter: thank you, chief we'll try to get more information from you soon. as we can tell you we have an

active scene in chester. a police officer was shot, taken to the hospital. let's zoom in one more time as we toss it back to you guys. they're focusing on the silver sedan, a stolen car. two suspects shot, one of them dead. we'll send it back to you in the studio. >> we continue our team coverage with nbc 10's drew smith. he's live at the medical center in upland with the officer is being treated. drew? >> reporter: we know that that officer was shot in the arm or chest area. that's coming from the police commissioner. doctors inside the medical center are working on him right now. when we arrived we saw a lot of police officers from several different departments. they've been guarding the entrances. one down there. there are several police cars, at least a dozen beyond the fence you see here. so, obviously, there are a lot of people down here at the hospital. down the other end, if we pan over here, you can see there's another entrance to the hospital. there are more officers on that side. that is where the ambulance bay

is and where they brought the officer in. i want to come back this way. you can see there's a large crowd up here waiting. we went over and spoke to them. some of these people are family members of somebody elts who was involved in the shooting. not the officer. i asked one of them who said it was an uncle of one of the people that was shot. they have not received any update right now. these folks are fairly emotional. they've been hugging each other. some crying here as they wait to get an update on the person they know that was shot in all of this. we can tell you the officer, the latest update from the police commissioner was he was stable for now. so that is the good news. but we'll keep working to check on his condition. doctors are working on him a gun shot to his arm or chest area. that's the early information. we'll stay on top of this. that's the latest, i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. now to a gun scare at philadelphia international airport. security searches delayed flights affecting thousands of

passengers this morning after a pilot left his gun unattended in a men's room. when he returned minutes later it had been stolen. george, we're learning there's been an arrest in the case? >> reporter: it took an entire day of investigative work and 16 delayed flights. but just within the past ten minutes, philadelphia police confirmed the arrest of an airport janitor. after they found that gun in a custodian's closet a few steps away from where it was stolen. just beyond these tsa security lines in a public men's rest room, the theft of a pilot's gun prompted a security scare. airplane search and flight delays for more than 2,000 passengers like vincent peters. >> it finally came across the intercom and said there's been a bit of an incident in the airport. and no one is cleared for

takeoff. >> the pilot had flown into philadelphia approximately 8:40 this morning from buffalo. >> reporter: chief inspector joe sullivan tells us the republic airlines pilot sat down his toiltry bag containing the approved weapon. when he realized minute later he forgotten it the bag was already stolen. airport police and tsa immediately began reviewing surveillance video and even searching peters' plane to make sure the weapon wasn't on board. >> i made eye contact with her i could tell she was looking for somebody specific. >> reporter: sullivan says the surveillance video led police to several janitorial workers and the secure access closet where the weapon was stashed. the gun was still in a locked combination code case inside that toiltry bag. some passengers believe it's not just the thief, who should face a reprimand. that pilot carries the weapon as part of the federal flight deck

officer program. that is a program that allows commercial pilots to volunteer to carry weapons in the cockpit. to protect their aircraft from 9/11 style attacks. investigators say the arrested janitor was the only person in the bathroom while that bag was left unattended. live tonight at philadelphia international airport, i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. now to the decision 2016. tensions are running high as republican presidential hopeful donald trump campaigns in ohio. it's a day after he canceled a chicago rally citing fears of violence. secret service agents rushed the stage while trump was speaking at an airport rally outside dayton. you could see trump jolt and look back. then the agent formed a protective ring around the republican front runner. almost as fast they left and allowed him to continue his speech. trump's campaign says the agent's acted when man attempted to breach the security buffer.

today's tense moment followed chaos in chicago last night where violence erupted at a trump rally. the campaign canceled the event over safety concerns. police had to physically separate supporters from protesters. and today trump said the clashes were part of a planned attack blaming move on.org and bernie sanders for what happened. >> with bernie, so he should get up and say to his people, stop. stop. not me. stop. they said mr. trump, should get up and this morning tell his people to be nice. my people are nice, folks. they're nice. >> trump has denied he's encouraged violence at his events. fellow republican candidates marco rubio and john kasich suggested they may not support trump if he becomes the gop nominee. they say trump is dividing the country and creating a toxic environment in the race.

>> this is a man who in rallies had told supporters to basically beat up the people who are in the crowd and he'll pay legal fees. someone who has encouraged people in the audience to rough up anyone who stands up and says something he doesn't like. >> there is no place for a national leader to prey on the fears of people who live in our great country. >> now, as for the democrats hillary clinton is charging trump with encouraging violence and aggression saying his heated political rhetoric is wrong and dangerous. bernie sanders says trump's heated language is inciting violent outbursts and it's to him to stop it. all right. now to our forecast, a great day for a walk outside. nbc 10 at veteran's memorial park. where people took advantage of this clear, sunny day. let's get a check of the weather with first alert meteorologist

violetta yass. >> we started the day off with sunshine. it started to get cloudy through the course of the afternoon. temperatures in the lower 60s in philadelphia. already in the mid 50s. it's been cooler towards the show. 52 in atlantic city and 53 toward millville. we had some drizzle development deadly weapon to the south of the city. you can see that drifting to the east. shouldn't be a problem over the next couple of hours. i want today remind you of, change those clocks of course spring them forward. we will be starting day light savings time. we lose an hour of sleep but gain an hour of sunshine. coming up we'll take a closer look at the timing. we have rain in the forecast for sunday night into monday. i'll have the details coming up in my first alert seven-day forecast. thank you. now back to breaking news and an update at the scene in chester. you're looking live at a deadly police involved shooting. as we had mentioned earlier an officer is in the er with a gun shot wound. two suspects were also shot one of them was killed. we'll have more information on

we're following a developing story out of burlington county. police recovered a body near hog island. a fisherman spotted the body. this morning police say it looked like it had been in the water for some time. it's not clear if the death was suspicious. back to breaking news you're looking live at chester medical center where an officer is getting treated after he was shot two hours ago. this is the scene as we look at chester. this all started when an officer was trying to pull over a suspected stolen car and we have more information and we will

an officer shot in chester delaware county is getting treated at the hospital. one suspect is dead, another hurt after this afternoon's shooting. and nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal continues live coverage. randy? >> reporter: we did just get an update from police. here's what we can tell you. this started as a suspected traffic stop on a stolen vehicle. if we zoom in, i can show you that silver car where investigators are focused that's the suspected stolen vehicle. that is where this gun fire broke out. police say that for some reason, the suspects shot towards the officers conducting the traffic stop. police shot back. in this exchange of gun fire we're told that one police officer was shot and taken to the hospital.

one of those suspects was shot and killed. another was shot and injured. we are also told that a third person who was not injured was taken into custody. at this point, they don't have much they can tell us about how exactly the gun fire broke out. they do say this started when they conducted the traffic stop and the suspects inside the vehicle pulled out a gun and that's when police responded. that's what the police are telling us, and again one police officer in the emergency room tonight. we're live in chesty. randy gyllenhaal. >> our team coverage continues with drew smith. he's live at the medical center in upland where the officer is recovering. drew? >> reporter: police continue to stand guard at the entrance of the medical center. they're not letting people in right now. also, over here i want to show you a family members that have gathered at the hospital. these are not family members of the police officer who is currently being treated inside the hospital. these are family members of one

of the men that was injured during the shootout. they got encouraging news. they were clapping a little bit and shouting saying he's going to be okay. i was talking to the uncle of that man who says he's a 19-year-old he was pulled from the car. the other person in that car that was shot did not make it. he confirmed that as well for us. we do know that the police officer was shot in the arm or chest area. the last update on his condition was that he was stable. we're going to keep checking on that throughout the night. we'll bring you the latest as soon as we get it. we're live, i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. friends and family gathered today to remember former ms. new jersey carra mccollum. she died last month after she spun off the road in bad weather and hit a tree. the 24-year-old princeton graduate was crowned ms. new jersey in 2013. she was a news anchor at smj

today. and she was a girlfriend of our nbc 10's keith jones. a salute to k 9 service dogs in delaware county today. tone stony creek veterinary hospital held the annual k 9 veteran's day celebration. dozens of military and search and rescue dogs were recognized. service dogs killed in the line of duty received special honors today. we have those clouds increase through the course of the day. we do keep things dry for much of tonight. it's for tomorrow that we're tracking showers that can become heavy as we head into sunday night and monday. so monday actually looking a little bit messy. we'll get to that in a minute. temperatures will be staying above average through much of the extended out look. not too much in terms of cold temperatures the next couple of days. tonight, upper 40s by around midnight and not dipping too much further down after that.

mild as we head into tonight. we're keeping an eye on is the area of moisture that's gathering to the south and west. that will impact us as we head into tomorrow night and monday. now again much of the afternoon for tomorrow stays off to the west. morning hours, here is 8:00 a.m. we could see slight showers sneak into southern areas, for the most part it looks like it will stay to the south of philadelphia. it will increase from south to north. here is 8:00 p.m., we keep things cloudy with spotty showers to the north. it's during the overnight hours and into your monday that we do see some more substantial rain start to move into the area. here is 6:00 a.m. monday. again the beginning of the morning rush. locally heavy rain in the forecast in particular areas to the south. that will continue off to the east. by the time the afternoon hours roll around that likely to start to shift into new jersey. and then we'll start to clear things out from west to east as the evening hours roll around. if you're head today the st. patrick's day parade tomorrow,

it's looking cloudy. but shower chances will increase throughout the afternoon. some of that can be heavy. maybe even causing minor localized flooding. that will be tapering off as we head into the later portion of monday before we clear things out tuesday. mostly cloudy tonight. not as chilly. got cold tonight. 48 the low in philadelphia. 43 areas north and west. tomorrow, we keep things cloudy. we'll get an east northeast wind so it looks like it's going to be a little bit cooler toward the shore. 52 there. mid 50s else where. cloudy again with showers developing in particular early to the south and east and perhaps lifting to the north as we head through the course of the afternoon. sunday night into monday is when the heavy rain arrives, particularly monday morning that contin continues through the afternoon. more quiet on tuesday with temperatures coming up into the lower 60s.

year, 51. you can see it's not 80s. still above normal for the entire extended outlook. for tonight, again, i want to remind everybody we spring forward. don't forget to adjust the clocks before you head to sleep. heading into your sunday, a little cloudier, cooler than we've seen for this week but it's really as we head into sunday night and monday that we're tracking steadier rain. anything that happens in the afternoon should be light and spotty. it's overnight and into monday and particularly monday morning that it looks a little bit on the heavy side. so, again, when you're headed out monday morning you'll want to make sure you're taking your time. the later part of the week temperatures remain above normal. >> it looks like mid 70s midweek. that's nbc news 10 for now. we'll see you at 11:00.
