weather for a breakdown of this rain. >> of course we've got more on the way. right now mostly looking at light to moderate rain here aloing the i-# 5 extending up toward redding. this of course includes parts of i-76 extending east ward toward philadelphia. down toward south jersey looking mostly showery in nature. that will be pushing north and east ward including the cape may area over the course of the next couple of hours and a lot of wet weather off to our south and west. we are in store for a soggy really 24 hours. now, temperatures for the most part have remained right around the 50 degree mark, already dropping down though as we mentioned. we would reach the high temperature for tomorrow very early. that may have already occurred as many of us are already in the 40s and many will spend the

hours monday in rain. as you head into your morning commute, steadier rainfall here in delaware and south jersey. 35 miles per hour so of course the combination of the two can create low visibility. heading north ward also looking rainy and windy with gusts to around 20. with lighter rain to the north and west. coming up, we'll take a closer look at the timing and we'll see when we can get in on some sunshine. >> now to a developing story. a police officer shot and killed this afternoon outside washington, d.c., he was originally from delaware county. we've learned that the 28-year-old grew up in upper chie chester. he was shot next to a police station. it happened over in prince george's county, maryland. that's not far from baltimore. the police chief described the shooting as an unprovoked attack.

officials say the gunman opened fire on the first officer he saw. once the shooting began, investigators say several officers fired back hitting one suspect. he's hospitalized in stable condition. the second suspect wasn't hurt. >> the mayor of chester is urging calm tonight after a police involved shooting left an officer hospitalized, a suspect dead and another suspect wounded. chaos erupted as police demanded answers about what happened. officers were responding to a suspected stolen car. witnesses say the suspects were uncooperative and when the captain approached the vehicle, someone in the car shot him. officers fired back killing one suspect and wounding another. tonight, chester's mayor asked for patience during the investigation. >> it does not help to have persons instigate or infuriate persons within the community when they don't have all the

information. >> police say bricks and bottles were thrown at officers in the chaos last night. so officers responded with pepper spray. captain davis remains in serious, but stable condition. new at 11, st. patrick's celebrations turned violent. two young people in the hospital with stab wounds. this comes after another man died early today stabbed in rittenhouse square. tonight we've learned police have suspects in custody. we're live at the scene of the latest double stabbing. how are people reacting to all of this? >> reporter: well, it's rare these crimes are happening. it's really got people nervous. first it was rittenhouse square and now steps from city hall. there is still some evidence here, a bloody green tee shirt worn by one of the victims, they were out here celebrating like

thousands of others trying to have a good time tonight. police sources tell nbc 10 a homeless man is now in custody for the deadly stabbing earlier today. >> i heard a commotion, what sounded like a fight. >> reporter: good samaritans rushed to help a 24-year-old. he was walking with friends when an attacker got in a sports argument with him and slashed him, a fatal wound. >> it's tragic. and his poor family. >> reporter: we've learned the attacker went to a va hospital because he was injured. surveillance led investigators to him. >> reporter: cell phone video shows more violence tonight. >> then he came over here in a rush. >> reporter: the witness said he watched an older man swinging a knife wildly at two young men. >> i said oh, my god, those kids.

>> reporter: police arrived quickly and wrestled the man with the knife away. >> the officer showed up just in time. >> reporter: they went to the hospital with stab wounds to the hand and chest. investigators have not released a motive, but witnesses say it started with an argument just like the stabbing earlier today. >> why? you know, why couldn't you just sit down, discuss it, resolve it and straighten it out? >> reporter: police have not released the names of the men they've taken into custody tonight but we do know that homeless man was taken from the veterans hospital. we're also told that he was known to frequent rittenhouse square. new at 11 an early morning fight at a philadelphia restaurant is caught on tape and in the middle of it all, a comedian in town performing at a center city comedy club take a look.

at least 16 people are reported to have died after six gunmen opened fire on beach goers on ivory coast. the dead included 14 civilians and two soldiers. all six attackers were killed. al qaeda is claiming responsibility for the attack. the u.s. state department said no americans were known to be dead or injured. well, new information about a shooting in upper darby yesterday that left a man fighting for life. police tell us he's in custody in connection to that shooting. investigators say he shot a man in the chest inside a house on

timber lake road. we're told the victim ran out of the house and made it halfway down the block before collapsing. he remains in critical condition tonight. >> well, friends and family are saying their final good-byes to a new jersey state trooper killed in the line of duty. this afternoon, loved ones gathered at the church in burlington county. line of mourners stretched outside the church. a funeral mass will be held tomorrow at noon. the 31-year-old trooper died monday night while on the scene of an accident in gloster county. a driver struck him as he was invest faithing the crash on i-2 # 5. that driver did stop at the scene. she's not facing any charges. well, dozens of dirt bikes and atvs are now in the custody of philadelphia police. today officers brought in more than 50 illegal bikes and atvs

as part of a city wide crack down. it all began with district tap ta t captains about where they tend to ride illegally. >> people die from these every year and it's very dangerous for people walking on the sidewalks when they come ripping up the sidewalks. >> police say the crackdown will continue right into the summer. the pennsylvania house is set to vote tomorrow on a bill to legalize nonsmokable forms of medical marijuana. a state senate voted to approve the bill, but critics worry the drug will be used for more than medical purposes and end up in the hands of high school students. 23 states have legalized medical marijuana.

well, tomorrow we'll learn more detail about philadelphia may mayor's soda tax proposal. he has said it will help raise money to pay for things like pre-k and parks and recs in the city. it calls for a three cent per ounce tax on sugarry drinks. new information about a deadly boat crash in new york. crews recovered a second body from the hudson river tonight, but we're told divers stopped looking for a third missing crewman. they believe his body is trapped in an unreachable section of the wreckage. yesterday we reported he was among those killed when the tug boat slammed into a barge and sank. well, it's been cloudy and

rainy through much of the evening. we're tracking some more steady rain for the overnight hours and it looks like that's going to continue into your morning rush. the winds are also going to pick up overnight and into tomorrow and that's going to be out of the east northeast so that's going to issue some more winds and it will feel a little chillier tomorrow. i amtraking warmer temperatures in the long-term. we'll get to that in a minute. 4 in philadelphia. atlantic city, cloudy and right around the 50 degree mark. i think we'll probably remain around the 50 degree mark over the next couple of hours before we start to drop down through the overnight hours. we're tracking some rainfall. we'll see how much we're talking. this particular model bringing about an inch of rainfall. we'll remain just under an inch of rain, but causing some ponding on the road. you'll want to make sure you're giving yourself some extra time to get around. a lot of wet weather off to our

north. there's that rain filling in through the course of the night. so on top of the cooler temperatures it's going to be rainy out there with the wind coming in out of the east northeast. steadier pockets of rain extending into the parts of new jersey. you can see those temperatures remain locked into the 40s, heading into the evening rush you can see it starts to taper off so we will see improvement through the course of the evening hours but we don't clear out. it still remains pretty cloudy with those temperatures pretty chilly. earlier in the day the chance for some showers before it looks like we finally start to see some improvement as we head into your wednesday. winds will increase as well. for the most part we're talking gusts around 30 miles per hour. again, that's going to be out of the east northeast so it is going to be feeling pretty chilly throughout the course of the evening.

not the brightest of mondays as we get the work week underway. periods of rain, temperatures dropping again into the lower 40s north and west and it's going to drop overnight and into tomorrow and so perhaps to the upper 30s as we head into tomorrow. chilly and windy tomorrow with periods of rain especially early. we've reached our high temperature for the most part or we will in the next couple of hours and we'll spend much of monday in the 40s. we do keep things cloudy with a chance of showers especially early in the day and it does start to get warmer, wednesday we will see some clearing later in the day and it does get warmer but we do have additional shower chances including st. patrick's day. >> coming up in sports, march madness, here we go. three teams get their name called on selection sunday. we'll head to all campuses. villanova, temple, st. joe's

water for the residents of flint. a life picture you're looking at this hour and on friday, a special baggage car will stop at stations from boston to d.c. to pick up pallets of bottled water. from our jersey shore bureau, canines from the police department can rest a little easier now. they were presented with brand new dog beds today as part of a crowd funding campaign. between the department and big barker. big barker is based out of philadelphia. >> and some of the area's finest police dogs will battle it out this week in chester county. more than 70 canines from p.a., new jersey and new york will take part in regional trials this week. the qualifiers will go to the national competition in philadelphia. and everyone was feeling a bit green in center city today.

the 2016 st. patrick's day parade cruised down the parkway. philadelphia's home to the country's second oldest st. patrick's day parade. the philadelphia flower show wrapped up its final day at the convention center and organizers say they've had the best turnout in years. they've been enjoying the celebration of spring honoring 100 years of the park service. more than a quarter million people made their way to the flower show over the past week and that's the best showing since 2012. >> the national park service has been a fantastic partner for the show this year. they put a new dimension and terrific presentations throughout the week and the people have really responded very well. >> planning is already underway for next year's show which will celebrate the flower fields of holland. we are tracking rain that could create a slow morning commute for you tomorrow.

prepare for a messy monday morning commute. we are tracking this rainy system that you can see on our live radar. we saw rain fooling earlier tonight and a dreary day across the nbc 10 viewing area. we're timing it all out and when should we see the worst of it? >> that's going to continue&lyñ move in overnight. we've got some darker colors here on the move toward our area so the rain is going to become not some widespread but a little bit more heavy as well during the overnight hours. showers around toward the valley and including extending east ward out toward the

philadelphia. and rain generally light in nature. we have steadier rain and that has shifted east of the i-95 toward cherry hill. heading southbound we've got some rain toward delaware. that has moved into cape may. we've been tracking that over the last half hour or so and that will continue through the course of tonight and into tomorrow as well. right around the morning rush is where we can see the rain. it's looking more steady with a potential for some more gusty winds as well. the combination of the two can bring the visibility down so you want to make sure you're taking your time on the roadways. gusts up to 20 miles per hour. likely to remain in the 40s so it's going to be damp, chilly and dreary. not a nice monday afternoon. some rain and temperatures remaining in the 40s as well. we'll take a look at what we can expect for the later portion of the day and when the temperatures can return to the

70s. to west philadelphia now, police are looking for the person who shot and killed a young woman =dvernight. it happened just before midnight. police say the 18-year-old victim was sitting on the front steps of her home when she was hit in the chest by a stray bullet. she was taken to the hospital, but later died from her injuries. here's a look at some of the stories we'll follow for you tomorrow on nbc 10. a funeral mass for shawn cullen. it starts at noon the 31-year-old died monday night. he was hit by a car while investigating a crash in glo gloucester county. >> a police officer is accused of ordering her son and daughter to fight other students. she was kaugts on video punching the 14-year-old girl hr daughter

was fighting. and jurors convicted a 25-year-old of simple assault for her involvement in an attack on a gay couple in center city. knot's lawyer argued the sentence is excessive. he's pushing instead for probation. a car bomb tore through a crowded hub killing at least 34 people and injuring more than 120 hoer others. the aftermath was caught on video. the blast was heard miles away and sent burning debris raining down over the area. there was no immediate claim of responsibility. turkey's president is vowing to bring terrorists to its knees. they say the co-pilot was using antidepressants at the time of the wreck.

around. it's going to be a little on the windy side as well. that's going to be out of the east north oost so it's going to feel a lot more chilly in particular compared to the temperatures that we saw earlier in the week. nonetheless as we head into the middle of the week, temperatures will be coming up once again so we could be reaching the 70 degree mark once again. 48 towards potstown. allentown extending back toward redding. 49 in millville atlantic city around 40 degrees. the trend has been toward cooler temperatures but of course we mean cooler by comparison. our average high this time of year, 51 degrees so we're still looking at temperatures well above normal. rain moving in, again the lighter rain on its way out. steadier, moderate rain from the south and west. that's going to be the trend overnight and into your monday

morning. here's 7:00 a.m. you can see some pockets of heavier rain extending into new jersey. across a good chunk of the area with a wind. we could see some fog and drizzle right into the evening hours. you can so the rain does move out later in the day, but it stays showerry with some on and off drizzle. so we are looking at poor visibility although the ponding on the road or the moderate rain will be on its way out for the second part of the day. as we head into tuesday the pattern stays locked in here. we keep the clouds locked in here for the most part, bewe do keep the showers in the forecast early. rainy and gusty for your monday morning commute. look for ponding on the roadways. that starts to taper off as we head into the second part of the day. it does stay showery but we will see improvement through the

check this one out. this confused cow interrupted a soccer game in australia today. the cow started chasing some of the players around. the cow broke free from a nearby enclosure. the cow does a quick lap and then he goes back into the woods. fortunately no one was injured. well, some kids in north philadelphia are learning some life lessons on the tennis court. some pro tennis instruction to the kids. here's a look at the event. up easy. there you go. when a child's character begins to build. up easy.

>> and the coach you just saw says more than 1,000 kids participate in the program. he hopes through more exposure organizers can double or even triple that total. well, a huge turnout today for the 39th annual flyers wives carniv carnival. thousands of fans got a chance to rub elbows with some of the flyers all-time greats and there were plenty of carnival style games with the goal of raising money for charity. >> we got together with the fans, and the people have supported us for years and years and years and you get a chance for a good cause. >> the carnival raises monies for charities and organizations like big brothers, big sisters. hey, john. >> good to see you again, denise.

three teams for the big five heading to the big dance this year. villanova is a top seed and once again, big expectations. we caught up with the head coach and even though his team can't play the second weekend in philly, they are ready to make a run. >> it's not where you play, it's how you play and we were up to win in philly. we had the chance last night. losing that game to seton hall not only lost us the big east championship, but you've got to move on. >> when you think about the seniors and the juniors who have been through those two tough efforts, you said you have to own this. do you think that has strengthened them mentally? going through adversity, they know this is their last shot especially the seniors. >> i do think so. these guys know they have a short window to play in college basketball. they know this is their last chance and those guys are driven by that.
