nbc 10 news starts now. new from overnight, house fire. check out this video from university city showing flames shooting out of the top floor windows. weekend violence in center city. two stabbings are under investigation after one person was killed and two others hurt. get ready to dance. we'll show you how temple, villanova and st. joe's players reacted after learning tournament invitations. 4:00 a.m. this monday morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. >> probably not the best way to

start the week. don't forget the umbrella before we leave. steady rain for most of the area. we've been seeing it overnight. the green shows us the late rain, light and steady around philadelphia and parts of south jersey. some of the heaviest showers are in chester county, crossing over 76 here soon. we're not seeing lightning with this. as we go through the morning, periods of rain will be in the forecast. for everyone this morning, it is going to be a wet morning commute, west chester starting to see some of the heavier rain, also right around parkesburg. the moisture continuing to move in from the south and west. yes, you want the umbrella around this morning. keep it around as we go through the afternoon. the shower chance isn't going to be done just yet. temperatures around 50 degrees. it's rainy and chm&y and it will stay that way as we go through the rest of the morning. 7:00 a.m., 47 degrees, breezy with rain still around. and by lunch time, we could see a lot of it tapering off.

we're in the beginning to be out of the woods just yet. 48 by 11:00 a.m., cloudy, breezy. showers around. we take a look at the afternoon forecast. see if that rain will be lingering into your tuesday. let's take a look at the roads with jessica boyington. montgomery county, upper moreland, mill road and easton road. we're watching the rainy cameras. here's the vine street expressway. this is right around 24th street. you can clearly see reduced visibility through our lenses here with the rain, westbound/eastbound, no big delays so far. potentially a slippery commute as well. here is the area bridges. ben franklin, tacony palmyra, no problems. we have a scheduled opening on the burlington bristol scheduled for 4:10. there will be some backups there. >> new from overnight, fire officials are still trying to figure out what started this house fire in philadelphia's university city section near the corner of 42nd and strus. the fire burned for half an hour before firefighters got it under

control. no one was hurt. just about three minutes past 4:00 right now. 48 degrees outside. from weekend fun to violence. philadelphia police are investigating two stabbings, both of which happened in center city. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at police headquarters in center city. tell us what we know about the victims and suspects. >> the random nature of these stabbings have people concerned over the last 24 hours. philadelphia police do have suspects in custody. first, this one, a stabbing at brad and arch streets. one witness tells us he watched an older man swinging a knife wildly at two young men. police arrived quickly and wrestled the knife out of that man's hands. a 21-year-old and 18-year-old went to the hospital with stab wounds to the hand and chest. inç rittenhouse square, a 24-year-old bucks county man was stabbed to death by a homeless man, police said. the suspect fled but showed up

at a v.a. hospital with injuries. in both attacks, sources tell us there was an argument between the attackers and the victims. with the arrests, there are still some uneasiness. a lot of people were out this weekend celebrating st. patrick's day. we'll hear from a witness to one of the attacks coming up in the next half hour. live at police headquarters, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. today, friends and family will say their final good-byes to a new jersey state trooper killed in the line of duty. nbc 10 was at the viewi ining i cinnaminson. the 31-year-old officer died a week ago at the accident scene in gloucester county. a driver hit trooper cullen while he was investigating the crash on 295 in west deptford. the driver stopped at the scene. she is not facing charges. we have learned that a police officer who was shot and

killed near washington, d.c. yesterday was originally from delaware county. a gunman killed jackie co eed j. he grew up in upper chichester township. he was 28 years old. officer colson's police chief described the shooting as an unprovoked attack. two suspects are in jail. officials say the gunman opened fire on the first officer he saw, which happened to be officer colson. >> that speaks to a high level of dedication and bravery. and when things began to turn, he immediately stepped into action. i'm very proud of him. >> investigators say other officers fired back wounding one of the suspects. there's no word on a motive for that attack. today former philadelphia police officer tamika gross is scheduled to go on trial. she'sç accused of ordering her son and daughter to fight other students. she's even caught on video

punching a 14-year-old girl her daughter was fighting. kathryn knott was convicted of assault for her involvement in a 2014 attack on a gay couple in philadelphia. her lawyer says the sentence is too harsh. he wants the punishment reduced to probation. 4:06. 48 degrees outside. we'll learn more about jim kenney's soda tax proposal. the mayor's administration will hold a briefing to explain their revenue projections for the tax. mayor kenney said the money raised will help to pay for universal pre-k and parks and rec centers in the city. the tax would be levied on distributors. the march madness dance card is set for three area teams, villanova, temple and st. joe's all play in the ncaa men's tournament this friday. nova was hoping to a top seed but they'll settle for number two in the south region.

the wildcats appeared less than thrilled when the selections came out last night. nova will face unc asheville in the opener on friday afternoon in brooklyn. if they win, they could face their big five rival, temple. >> the owls are celebrating their ten seed selection, the same bracket as villanova. temple will play iowa friday afternoon in brooklyn right after nova's game. a third team from our area will have to do some traveling. that's the st. joe's reaction to their ncaa slot. the a-10 champs will face cincinnati on friday night in spokane, washington. stay with us in the next half hour, you'll hear from each local team headed to the big dance. depending on how far those teamç get, you could watch them play

in philly. the wells fargo center is hosting the sweet 16 and elite 8 rounds from march 25th to the 27th. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> a rainy start to your monday morning. it will stay this way through the afternoon although we'll see more breaks in the rain as we go past about 7:00 a.m. before you leave, here's what the radar looks like. rain out there, take your time. don't leave without the umbrella. live look at the radar close to philadelphia. steady light rain, extending up to trenton. for all the major interstates, 76, 95, 295, the pa turnpike, 76 in chester county, we continue to have the steady rain falling. where you see the reds and oranges, that's where you see the heaviest rain on the radar. chester conte, west chester see something of that, too. the heavier area is on its way to montgomery county at the moment. more showers on their way in to

delaware. mostly the heavier rain approaching in maryland. also temperatures are chilly. it's rainy and chilly. you will also need the jacket, maybe just a raincoat and umbrella. windy later today, too. 49 right now philadelphia, 46 in allentown and reading. mostly upper 40s through south jersey and delaware. here's what's going to happen through the day. here's the rain that will be moving in. by 7:00 this morning we'll still have rain around, the heaviest could be on its way out. temperatures chilly. even by lunch time, you see the green here. periods of rain through lunch time today. you'll still want that umbrella. even as we go through the afternoon and into the evening, 7:00 p.m., temperatures around the mid-to-low 40s in some areas. those showers are still going to linger and then we go into tonight and overnight into early tomorrow morning. we still have a rain chance in the forecast. coming up, i'll show you what the rest of the afternoon looks like, also a check on the radar and your seven-day forecast straight ahead.

>>:ú4:09. let's check your rainy ride to work, including roosevelt boulevard. jessica boyington has that. >> we are watching wet roadways, exactly what you said. here's the boulevard around wissahickon avenue. not a lot of volume or traffic. you can see, we are seeing some slippery spots on the roads. but northbound or southbound on the boulevard, if you're headed to the schuylkill expressway, no problems right now. the rest of our drive times are doing okay. the schuylkill expressway, 95, no problems heading into center city. the blue route is great as well. if you travel on any of the area bridges, we have a scheduled opening on the burlington bristol, scheduled for 4:10. no problems on the ben and the tacony palmyra. either direction. no scheduled openings at least for right now on the tacony palmyra. we'll keep you updated. well from funny to fistic f fisticuffs and it's all caught on tape.

it's 4:13. breaking news this morning from kansas. police are on the scene of an amtrak train derailment. injuries have been reported. we're working to find out just how many people are hurt. we do know that the train runs daily from los angeles to chicago. it derailed in gray county, kansas. we'll continue to get updates and update you on air and on our nbc 10 news app. this morning we have new

video of a high-speed chase in southern california that ended with a police-involved shooting. this started around ç9:45 loca time. when police say someone stole a cruiser and drove off. investigators say the driver was going more than 100 miles an hour at one point. police eventually cornered the driver in an alley. that's when the officers opened fire. police have not said if the driver opened fire on them. we do not know the driver's condition. today amtrak workers with doing their part to help the people of flint, michigan, who continue to deal with the water crisis they'll be dropping off bottled water donations here at the 30th street station. on friday, a special baggage car will stop at stations from boston to washington, d.c. to pick up pallets of bottled water. a fight at a philadelphia restaurant is caught on video and a comedian in town for a show is in the middle of it all. take a look.

journal"/maris poll shows donald trump holding double digit leads in florida and illinois. kasich leads trump in ohio. for the democrats,ç clinton ha sizable leads in florida and ohio and a narrow lead in illinois. we get to nbc 10's vai sikahema with what the candidates said during their final pitch to voters. vai? >> the democrats running for president held a town hall in ohio last night. both of them had something to say about what's been going on with the other political party. bernie sanders and hillary clinton took questions at ohio state university in columbus. ohio is one of five states holding crucial primaries tomorrow. clinton and sanders appeared separately on stage but both talked when asked about the recent violence for gop front-runner donald trump. >> trump has got to get on the tv and tell his supporters that violence in the political process in america is not

acceptable, end of discussion. >> what trump has done is like a case of political arson. you know? he has lit the fire and then he throws his hands up and claims that he shouldn't be held responsible. and he should be held responsible. >> both clinton and sanders deny trump's accusations that both democrats sent protesters to disrupt his rallies. meanwhile, donald trump is rejecting claims that he incites violence at his rallies, saying he and his supporters only want peace. at a trump rally in bloomington, illinois, say they are only reacting to bernie sanders protesters. protesters.  new york city yes people held an anti-trump rally. protesters held up signs bashing trump. they chanted slogans about ending international wars and domestic racism. the rally ended with a march to the u.n. building. in the campaign, florida, illinois, missouri, north

carolina and ohio are all holding primaries tomorrow, florida, illinois and ohio are winner take all states in the republican delegate race. florida is the big prize with 99 delegates atç stake. donald trump holds a commanding lead in florida. the new nbc news/"wall street journal"/maris pole shows trump with 43%, marco rubio with 22%, ted cruz right behind with 21%. the same poll shows john kasich with a six-point lead in his home state, leading donald trump 39% to 33%. john kasich will get help on the campaign trail yesterday from mitt romney. nbc news has learned that romney will appear with kasich at two stops in ohio. romney blasted donald trump earlier this month. he urged republicans to vote for kasich in ohio and marco rubio in florida. remember, stay on top of the latest decision 2016 developments by downloading the

nbc 10 app. you can use it to find the latest delegate counts and information about upcoming primaries and caucuses. i'm vai sikahema, nbc 10 news. >> 4:19. turkey says it's prime minister will postpone his trip to jordan after a deadly car bomb explosion in the turkish capital. you're looking at the aftermath of a suicide blast yesterday. at least 34 people are dead with dozens more injured. the explosion at the transportation center sent burning debris raining down over the area. nobody claimed responsibility. turkish police expect kurdish militants carried out that attack. a second body has been pulled from the hudson river after a tugboat accident. they think a third body is trapped in an unreachable section of the wreckage. the tugboat slammed into a barge and sank. millions are still under the threat of flooding across the

south. the death toll is now at six. from these record-breaking storms. the rain and flooding also destroyed thousands of homes across multiple states. some neighbors had to escape their houses using boats. to make matters even worse, officials say the floodwaters could be toxic. >> you can lookç at the trash d all that's floating through the houses. there's gasoline that's got into the water. there's all kind of different toxins. that's flowing through these people's houses. >> we lost track of cars, trucks, two-story buildings. >> officials say the rain may be gone but the threat of flooding will continue for several days. take a look at these heavy storms that rolled through the midwest. this is video of storm clouds near little rock, arkansas. you can see the thick line of dark gray and what appears to be a funnel cloud. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> good monday morning.

before you leave today, grab the umbrella. we have rain around. even give yourself a little extra time on the roadways we've seen steady rain overnight and we're seeing it linger into your monday morning commute. chester county, this is where we have some of the heaviest rain heading towards pottstown. phoenixville seeing the heavier rain. that will continue to move into montgomery county. heavy rain across 76. that will head toward 476. norristown picking up some of the more moderate rain soon too. that's one of the heavier clusters of rain we're seeing across parts of the area. mercer county, bucks, the lehigh valley, spotty rain continuing through the next several hours, even in parts of new jersey across the ac expressway, that's mostly steady, light rain we're seeing at the moment. spottier, heavier showers moving into cape may and areas like cumberland county. even in delaware, we're seeing spotty showers here, too. more moving in from maryland.

these are fairly heavy. that's where you see the reds, oranges and yellows. heavy rain on the way to delaware. this morning, take your time on the roadways. they're also wet. we're seeing ponding of water. keep that in mind as we go through the next several hours. temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, so it's chilly and rainy throughout yo]r day. it will get windy. maybe a raincoat instead of the umbrella later today. this is future weather by 7:00, 8:00 this morning. still rain around for the morning commute. temperatures staying at about the mid to upper 40s. by lunch time today, we'll still have that rain in the forecast, mostly spotty light rain. periods of rain continuing throughout the day. we'll take a look at the afternoon and the seven-day forecast coming up. >> thanks. 4:22 right now. before you get out the door, jessica boyington has a look at the roads. what are you seeing? >> tracy, we have an update for you. we had an earlier accident scene that was active for quite some time in montgomery county. that accident scene has now

cleared. there may be police activity still on the scene but the roadways are back up. out in upper moreland, mill road and easton road. that was tieing people up for a little bit. here's the schuylkill expressway around girard avenue. no problems in either direction. roads are definitely wet, eastbound drive times still okay from the blue route to the vine street expressway, 13-minute trip, average speeds into the 50s. as for the area bridges, we do have a scheduled opening, we're still in the process of that opening on the burlington bristol, scheduled for 4:10. no problems on the ben. no scheduled openings at least for right now on the tacony palmyra. i'll check in with new jersey roads when i'm back in the next ten minutes. tracy? ♪ everyone was feeling green in center city. 2016 st. patrick's day parade cruised down the ben franklin parkway. it was mayor jim kenney's first st. patrick's day since he took office. philadelphia is home to the country's second oldest

it's 4:26 and 48 degrees outside. today the pennsylvania house will vote on a bill that would legalize nonsmokeable forms of medical marijuana.

the state senate approved the measure last year. governor tom wolf also supports it. critics worry the drug will be used for more than just medical purposes or end up in the hands of high school students. 23 states, including new jersey and delaware have legalized medical marijuana. four states okayed recreational use of the drug by adults. the 39th annual flyers wives carnival is now in the books. that means more money headed to area charities. thousands of fans enjoyed carnival games and got to remember elbows with the flyers yesterday. >> we get together with the fans, you know, the people have supported us for years and years and years. you get a chance for a good cause. >> the carnival raises money for charities including big brothers/big sisters, the fox chase cancer center and the police athletic league. dirt bike crackdown. next at 4:30, see how philadelphia police are working to stop a warm weather crime
