nbc 10 news starts now. meningitis death, a philadelphia high school student is dead from the bacterial infection. this morning we're hearing from parents and health experts about the symptoms your children should be looking for. still on top. donald trump and hillary clinton win big in the latest round of primaries plus one republican candidate will be in our area later today. and kicking the habit, today is the day dedicated to helping young people quit smoking. we have a full list of events from across our area. 4:00 a.m., 45 degrees outside. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's start with meteorologist sheena parveen with our forecast. >> we have fog this morning,

some areas thicker than yesterday. 1 1/4 mile in pottstown, 1 1/2 miles in wilmington northeast philly, seeing three-quarter mile visibility. this is something we'll be dealing with as we go through the morning. many areas we're continue just to see that fog settle and possibly get thicker. here's a look at the radar and satellite, nothing in the way of rain this morning. you don't have to worry$!out a raining morning commute. later on today, late showers moving in. temperaturewise, 40s, potts within 39 degrees. reading 45 degrees in philadelphia at the moment. as we go through the day, temperatures will continue to stay in the 40s. clouds around, then later on today, more sunshine finally in the afternoon. by about 3:00 p.m., temperatures should be in the mid-60s. not a bad day. later on tonight, we'll be tracking the showers moving in.

let's get a check on the roads with jessica boyington. >> we're watching through center city right now on the vine street expressway. this is right around 24th street. no problems, restrictions either direction. westbound in here towards the schuylkill expressway. you can still see no problems. this is where we see more of the volume. the schuylkill expressway is good from the blue route to the vine, still a 13-minute trip. speeds into the 60s if you're on 95 headed southbound through center city right now. if you take mass transit, everything is running on time. now to decision 2016. donald trump and hillary clinton win big in yesterday's five-state primaries. they are among the five candidates still in the race. the field got a bit smaller last night when marco rubio dropped out after a disappointing loss in his home state. matt delucia is here with a breakdown of what happened last night. walk us through this, matt. donald trump added to his

delegate count winning in four states, including florida, forcing marco rubio to suspend his campaign. he expressed pride in a campaign that was built on policy and idea. donald trump beat rubio by nearly 20 percentage points in florida. he wished the florida senator well. >> but to win the states that we won and to win by the margins and especially, look, this is my second home, florida. to win by thatç kind of a numb is incredible. record setting. >> reporter: hillary clinton added to her delegate count for the democrats, resoundingly beating bernie sanders in florida, north carolina and ohio. and narrowly beating him in illinois and missouri. this is what it looked like as hillary clinton celebrated her victories last night in west palm beach florida. with nearly 700 pledged

delegates at stake in yesterday's democratic contest, clinton said she is confident of widening her lead over bernie sanders. >> tonight it's clearer than ever that this may be one of the most consequential campaigns of our lifetime. >> reporter: now let's take a look at the delegate count. on the democratic side hillary clinton has 1,565 delegates, nearly bernie sanders haul of 858. the democrats need 2,183 delegates. donald trump has 656, ted cruz has 408 and john kasich has 138. republicans need 1,237 delegates to win. john kasich willing here in our area. he'll patake part in a town hal at noon. nbc 10 will be there. look or four reports later today

chemical leak in port richmond. the situation is now under control. nobody got hurt. a philadelphia high school student is dead from a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis. the ninth grader died early yesterday. katy zachry is live. this is pretty scary for parents and students. >> reporter: tracy, this is a really scary situation especially because there are so many unknowns associated with it. we're here live in spring garden at school district headquarters where they have not yet released the name of the boy who died. we know he was a ninth grader. we know he died yesterday. but a spokesperson could not tell us how long he had been in the hospital or within he first got sick. this is the first meningitis death in philadelphia this year. parents we spoke to say they're nervous to hear this kind of news. >> for something like that to be in the school, that's scary. i have two kids. one in day care and one in high school. that makes me wonder, are they

being clean? >> we have some information for you about meningitis symptoms. they include fever, headache and a stiff neck. patients can have nausea and vomiting they may be confused and sensitive to light. one of the things the district and the school are dong, they're providing a meeting later tonight at 6:00 p.m. to answer concerned parents questions. in the next hour, you'll hear from a doctor about how easy it is to contract this illness. reporting live in spring garden, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. happening today, a new group in philadelphia is expected to announce its support for the proposed tax on sugary drinks in the city. the group will give details of citywide coalition this morning. mayor;h%im kenney is expected be there. the group says it wants to lead the fight for a 3 cent tax on sugary drinks. people are back in their

apartments in burlington after a hazmat situation forced them out into the night. skyforce 10 checked out the scene on route 130, medics took four people to the hospital, including two children. officials say they were suffering from prolonged exposure to aerosol and bug bomb spray. 4:08. lawyers for the man accused of ambushing two pennsylvania state tro troopers in the poconos wants the trial to be moved. aaron frein led police on a seven-week manhunt. frein's attorneys want the change of venue because they say heavy media coverage of the case will make it hard for their clean the to get a fair trial. corporal bryon dickson died in that attack. frein has pleaded not guilty. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. a nurse quarantined in new

jersey after ebola concerns is fighting to keep her federal lawsuit alive. ca she was forced to stay in the hospital and not go home to maine. she sued governor chris christie and state health officials for violating her civil rights. the government says health workers were just protecting the public and the lawsuit should be tossed. hickox is asking the judge not to do that. kick butts campaign, young people will show leadership and activism in the fight against smoking. they want tobacco companies to stop marketing them. in pennsylvania, more than 10% of kids under 18 are smokers. in wilmington, there will be a graffiti wall at mt. pleasant high school. in bucksç county, council rock

high school students will create a collage of smoke-free selfies. at ft. dix, there will be a jump rope endurance challenge. now your first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> good morning. we are dealing with another round of fog this morning. so before you head out, just keep that in mind. in some areas it is thicker this morning than it was yesterday. i think we'll keep seeing this develop through the next several hours. more rain chances in the seven-day forecast. i'll show you that in just a minute. otherwise we have a chance of rain and snow as we go into sun with our next storm system. temperatures will be cold enough, especially north and west, to support that. go figure. it's the first day of spring and it will feel like winter. 2 1/2 mile in coatesville, 1 1/4 mile visibility in mt. holly. northeast philly coming in below one mile, three-quarter mile visibility.

reading, a quarter mile visibility, lancaster, zero. that's dense fog there. one mile in millville, 1 1/2 in wilmington. we have patchy fog. at this point we have patchy, dense fog trying to develop. 38 in reading, 39 pottstown. 45 in philadelphia, 43 bensalem, 39 in millville, 45 in dover. this afternoon will be warmer than yesterday. we'll see more sunshine. here's a look at the radar, we are drive. we'll have that patchy fog in the forecast for this morning. keep that in mind before you hit the roads. through the afternoon and into the evening we'll see a chance of showers moving in. tomorrow afternoon, we mostly stay dry but then for your st. patrick's day, another rain chance moves in later in the afternoon. the same thing as we go into friday, we stay dry mostly during the day. today, warmer this afternoon, late showers, highs around the

that implosion happened in germantown about a year and a half ago. as part of an effort to revitalize the neighborhood. this weekend, crews will take down two more high-rises with the same goal, this time in north philadelphia. construction workers are getting ready to demolish the apartments

at 23rd and ingersol streets. two of the three will come down early saturday morning. the plan is for apartments to go up at this spot. crews are expected to renovate the third building and turn it into senior housing. 4:16 and 45 degrees outside. in an nbc 10 exclusive, we are hearing from a man who escaped a could be a case of mistaken identity. nbc 10's vai sikahema is live in the digital operations center. vai, what do we know about this investigation? >> good morning, tracy. first of all, police are looking for two suspects in connection with a baseball bat attack and for threatening to burn down a homeless shelter. this is video from sunday in fishtown. two men get out of a vehicle and approach two other men standing in front of the philadelphia brotherhood rescue mission. you can see a man with a bat chasing the victim and striking the man in the leg.

our lauren mayk talked with one of the victims who lived at the mission. >> now that i see the video, i relive that moment a couple times. i didn't want to make the guys any more madder than they were. i've been in violent situations before a long time ago in my life. it's never good to answer with anger. >> police say one of the attackers hit the other victim with his own cane and when they left, one of the men allegedly said he was coming back to burn the place down. the pastor at the mission believes this was all a case of mistaken identity after an incident at a nearby bar. if you happen to have any information, philadelphia police want to hear from you. live in the digital operations center, i'm vai sikahema, nbc 10 news. >> vai, thanks. happening now, commuters are getting to work without washington, d.c.'s subway system. the city shut down the entire system down at midnight. that will last about 29 hours. crews will make inspections

after there issues with the electrical system. >> i cannot rule out a life safety issue. >> it will impact the entire metropolitan region, no doubt about it. >> 700,000 passengers ride the d.c. metro every day. the federal government is open today but officials encourage employees to telework from home, use a vacation day or take unpaid leave. a 12-carç crash pushes a c off a bridge and into the hey high river. today the car has been fond at the bottom of the river but no word on any survivors or who may have been inside. the bridge leads from kentucky to cincinnati. police say 12 vehicles were involved in four separate crashes during rush hour yesterday afternoon. >> we're sitting here in the driveway, we look up and this red suv literally flipped over the barrier and went into the

river, nose first. it bobs up and then just disappeared. >> searchers found the car at the bottom of the river using sonar. they are trying to figure out how to pull it out. people across the midwest are under the threat of severe weather like thunderstorms and heavy winds. yesterday, storm chasers in illinois captured this super cell on camera. several small tornadoes dropped from that dark cloud. so far, there have been in reports of any serious injuries. look at this video, in louisiana, the rain may have stopped after a historic round of storms. water levels are still rising. this donkey got trapped in the floodwaters. firefighters tried unsuccessfully to reach the animal. later a man on a horse was able to get to the dompgky and lead it to safety. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. the horse saved the donkey. that's really cute. this morning we're still dealing with fog. we have that around.

before you leave, keep that in moon. maybe take it slower on the roadways. the morning fog will stay in the forecast till about sunrise or so. more rain chances as we go through this week. this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon, friday afternoon, we have rain chances for at least a short period of time for the next few days. going into the weekend, a chance of rain, snow on sun with our next weather system. yes, it will be cold enough. i know it doesn't seem like it since we've been mild. we can't rule out anything like that just yet. philadelphia right now, 45 degrees, visibility not too bad. around three miles. other spots are seeing much lower visibility. look at reading. aç quarter mile. denser fog around the area, lancaster is zero mile visibility. that's dense fog. you see three-quarter mile visibility in northeast philly, mount holly. some of these are dropping. half mile visibility in wilmington. that's lower than it was. we'll keep seeing this throughout the morning, areas of

patchy, dense fog. that will stay in the forecast for the start of your day. we are dry. no rain on the radar, that's good news. today we'll see a chance of showers later on. tomorrow morning, we start off with another dry day. then for your st. patrick's day tomorrow afternoon, another chance of showers moves in. we start off dry for friday. another chance of showers moves in. you just see the pattern happening here over the next several days. we go into your weekend, saturday morning, it's going to be cold. temperatures in the 30s and we have a pretty good north wind coming in. that's going to pull down that cold air mass again. 30s with areas north and west in the 20s, same thing for sunday morning. and there's that storm system i was mentioning right off the coast. there's a chance we could see rain and snow across the area. coming up, we'll take a closer look at that seven-day forecast straight ahead. >> we'll see you in a few minutes. let's check your ride to work now. let's check 42, jessica boyington is watching that. jessica? >> we're doing okay on 42 right now, tracy. this is in deptford around route

41. the northbound lanes right here, ahead to philadelphia. no backups or problems there right now. we have a five-minute time headed northbound from 55 to the walt whitman bridge. let's check in with the blue route also. you can see we still are in the green. no problem or delays yet. that southbound drive time is a 15-minute trip from the schuylkill expressway to 95. the speeds still in the 60s. no problems or restrictions there. we just showed you leading up to the walt whitman bridge. no problems getting into philadelphia right now on the ben franklin bridge and no scheduled openings on the tacony palmyra, the burlington bristol. i'll keep you updated on the bridges for the rest of the morning. back in the next ten with another check on your morning drive. speaking of travel, if you want aç refund after last week septa shutdown, you need to ask. a septa spokeswoman tells us they are the no offering blanket refunds but will consider
