like it's going to develop along the coast and may be cold enough to produce snow over a large portion of the area later on sunday and into sunday night. and some of the headlines, this is not a little trivial event. this is a nor'easter. it is a storm. and not just north and west suburbs and the poconos are going to be affected by this. there is a threat of accumulation, just about anywhere. and that will be the case during the day. more on the timing of that storm with the rest of the seven day in a few minutes. students held an afterschool memorial to remember a classmate who died suddenly from bacterial meningitis. rosemary connors live outside george washington carver high school with more on the memorial and concern surrounding his death. >> reporter: very emotional afternoon here at carver high school of engineering and

science. you can see the flag out front is at half-staff. the principal and students tell me it in honor of jonathan briggs who died of bacterial mennen the guy. video we gathered. you can see the student body came together in the schoolyard with balloons which they released into the sky as a tribute to jonathan. this has been very difficult for the school community because jonathan was so young, this was sudden and he was very involved. played on the undefeated jv basketball team. we spoke to students who described him as a good athlete and friend. we spoke to his coach about the outpouring of support over past few days. >> huge shock, obviously yesterday. kids didn't even know him hugging each other, supporting each other, this morning, even last night, getting text messages, phone calls from parents, kids, asking for pictures, any tributes. >> a gentle giant.

lesean mccoy. authorities are investigating for an assault on two philadelphia police officers at rece recess lounge last month. we asked why there's been no decision one way or another. >> we had several witnesses at reset lounge supposed to come into your office last week. they could not make it to meet with our assistant district attorneys and investigators assigned to the matter. >> mccoy plays for the buffalo bills. he's told investigators that nightclub incident was not his fault. philadelphia's mayor getting backing for proposed soda tax. philadelphians for a fair future announced their support for the tax today. the group is made up of business, civic and faith leaders. it wants to lead the fight for soda tax. mayor jim kenney proposing 3 cent tax. meaning a tax would be 36 cents on a 16-ounce soda.

it would fight poverty in the city. >> today, we're going to support annest that will create better schools in philadelphia, community schools. we're going to support an effort that will make sure that every child who deserves pre-k gets it. >> mayor kenney proposed the soda tax during this in budget address this month. two previous attempts to enact the tax both failed. first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> it can get wild weather changes this time of the year. that's what's going to be happening here. we have return of 70 degrees. yesterday it was barely above 50. today, into the 70s. it is going to get colder by the weekend. and that's going to set us up for snow on sunday. it's becoming increasingly likely some is going to fall. we have cloudy skies across much of the area now. we did have enough sunshine to push us to 71.

winds out of the south at nine. we're 20 degrees warmer than we were at this time yesterday. it in the 60s to near 70 in most places. 59 in mt. pocono. southerly wind keeping things cooler at the jersey shore at 60, 57 degrees in dover delaware right now. look at these comparisons to 24 hours ago. 15 to 20 degrees warmer. but it's not going to last. we're going up near 70 today. 66 tomorrow. then 56, then 47, and sunday gets colder. we're going straight downhill after tomorrow. we've got an area of clouds and some showers moving through the region. as you can see, maybe a couple of little rumbles of thunder as we go into eastern burkes county and that is moving quickly to the east. we do have other areas of showers spinning around this big

upper air low pressure center over the great lakes. and it's just going to keep spinning in shower threats. here's showers for this evening. then that moves out. we dry out, clear out. here comes more tomorrow. with heat in the afternoon, not anything too big. we clear out again for friday morning. and here comes more showers for friday afternoon. so this is three, four days in a row of this. but then we watch to the south for an actual storm to develop. this is likely to become a nor'easter. the european model, most accurate in the world, we showed this to you yesterday, other computer models are now getting on board with this solution that there will be a storm, it will be close enough to the coast. there will be enough moisture, and it will be cold enough. so combine all of those things, add up to snow. and even this time of the year, you can get accumulating snow.

you can get some disruptions and so this is something we're going to have to watch as we go through the rest of the week and into the weekend. i want to emphasize this is not just a trivial issue. this is not being hyped. it not that unusual to get snow late in march. 1958, on march 20, 11 inched of snow in philadelphia. and up to 50 inches in parts of burke county. shut down the turnpike. there is a threat of accumulation. and just about any part of the area is vulnerable at this point depending on the track. mostly cloudy, mild chance of shower during the evening. temperatures down to 48 degrees. during the day tomorrow, windy, warm, chance of shower again. highs in the 60s but it's going to be gusty. then we have gusty winds cooling us down friday, even more so on saturday. at least it's dry there. and there is snow on sunday. could be much of the day and

officer pulling to a train crossing in ohio this month. that van on the left stuck on the tracks and a train is approaching. the officer helped that driver get out of the way. all they can do is watch the train barrel right there into the stranded van and push it down the tracks. through it all, they got away in time, and no one was hurt. see if you can figure out how this crash happened. yeah, an suv on top of a car early tuesday morning in baltimore. how does that happen? police say the suv ran a red light and was hit by another car. the impact sent that suv airborne. landed upside down on top of a parked car. clearly, it stayed right there. didn't fall off. no one seriously hurt. we imagine it was an unpleasant surprise for the owner of that parked car. >> oh, yeah. >> never see anything like that there no. now to video that comes with a warning. >> yeah. tough to watch. explosion at a medical marijuana facility in new mexico where two

is sending right now on school resource officers under the current plan and for the 2016-'17 budget year. their hope, two things happen 500,000, that's hoy much evesham township invests in keeping eight officers on alert at eight schools to keep students and staff safe from harm. >> you see what happens across the country and we could not let that happen in evesham township. >> we will handle the burden, financial burden, we will handle the safety of the kids in school. >> reporter: the chief with the mayor announced police will budget and pay for what the school spends right now, the hope is that the school board will not push for a vote to approve a ballot referendum question that would ask taxpayers to foot $700,000 bill for school security. >> that referendum would be for over $685,000. a program of which is not even approved by our police chief. >> shouldn't come back to us on the taxpayers, in my opinion.

and the township, i believe, has enough money to do their own policing. >> they're there as deterrent and we have full coverage as is right now. >> reporter: it's a heated subject and happens to come as evesham district is discussing the possible closure of evans elementary which has families fuming. >> today's a day to say, we have stake in ownership in our town. it's inexcusable to close the school. >> reporter: evesham superintendent hasn't been able to review the proposal or potential savings but current board member sandy student is in favor. >> one of the things that i suggested on the evans, that we could sell our administration billing and realize some truly profits from that. >> reporter: now, the superintendent did tell me by e-mail this would save the district $60,000. he doesn't know whether the ballot referendum question will be reduced or removed altogether. he says, the possible or potential closure of evans elementary is an entirely

today, more people are dying from heroin and opioid addiction than ever before. >> now, for the first time, the federal government's narcotics agency is making a major shift in how it's fighting the drug crisis. denise nakano is here to explain what the new strategy is all about. >> the drug enforcement administration, or the dea, has launched a new program here in pennsylvania. it's called the 360 strategy. it was rolled out in pittsburgh this fall. nbc 10 traveled to find out how

officials hope it will muck a difference in the opioid crisis. the strategy will expand the dea's role from just going after major drug traffickers. a large focus on education in the community, say by sponsoring a play in schools about dangers of opioids or partnering with community groups. something the dea has never done before. >> we're not going to arrest our way out of this, all right? this problem is severe. and we don't have a jail system or jail infrastructure that's going to allow us to arrest our way out of it, nor do we want to arrest our way out of it. we want folks that need help to get the help. if we can either prevent be from using through education, right, or see somebody get treatment and stop them from using, then that denies potential revenue to the drug trafficking organizations.

>> now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> by next monday, there may be snow on the ground, at least in parts of of the area. we got to 70 degrees today. it hard to believe. we were in 80s last week. but it's going to get colder by the weekend. colder each day. as we head toward the weekend and the snow most likely sunday and into sunday night. we have a lot of clouds around now after sunshine, a good bit of the day. 71, wind out of the south at nine miles an hour. and we were chilly yesterday, only 53, up to 71 today. and then it's going to go down. still warm tomorrow. but drop really comes on friday and into saturday and then sunday will be the coldest of all. 71 philadelphia. but it's 66 in chester springs. 61 kenneth square. and in wilmington, that's still mild for this time of the year.

64 in redding, pottstown, quaker town, coatesville, oxford, very mild temperatures. we had sun for a good bit of the day. look how cold in beach haven. southerly wind coming in off the cooler ocean. ocean still relatively warm, though, when talking about the potential moisture being added for winter storm. this area, line of showers, even thunderstorms coming through, racing through, lightning north of the poconos now, rain is already ended in allentown, about to end in easton. ended in chester county. now racing right into philadelphia. portions of montgomery and buck. so everything's moving fast there. but there are more bands of showers getting ready to come through, a threat each day as you'll see here. through the night tonight, it pretty warm. temperatures in the 50s for much

of the night going down into the 40s. tomorrow we see showers come through with temperatures in the 60s. we dry out again and then here comes more showers on friday. but the major threat of course is later in the weekend, as this nor'easter develops, looks like it's going to develop, it should be close enough to provide precipitation and maybe cold enough for snow. now of course this time of the year, it has to come down hard during the day to stick on any kind of roads. when you have a storm this intense it does have potential to come down pretty hard. we'll have to watch that closely. it does have potential, even this late in the season. cloudy, mild, chance of shower. 48 for the low. even lightning in some spots. windy, warm, chance of shower tomorrow. high temperatures into the mid-60s. it still way pabove average but windier than today.
