worried about their children after a classmate died of bacterial meningitis. >> the school held a meeting designed to ease concerns tonight. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal live at george carver high school in north philadelphia. what did parents learn tonight? >> reporter: parents were told it's unclear where the bacteria originated o. officials do say that the building here remains safe. this as students gathered to remember a young life. as families left tonight's difficult meetings, students walked away remembering a beloved classmate. >> always smiling. everybody loved him. >> reporter: while their parents learned how bacterial meningitis can spread. >> very straightforward. and they waited until we asked all the questions so that was a good thing. >> reporter: the school district telling parents the bacteria while dangerous is difficult to contract. doesn't survive on surfaces and only spread through secretions. >> intimate contact, bodily

contact. passing a cigarette around. soda bottle. >> reporter: they don't know where freshman jonathan briggs contracted the bacteria. he fell ill monday. doctors say meningitis can kill quickly. >> a sad part of life, the infections can rear up and strike folks who were absolutely healthy a day or two before. >> reporter: they students up to date on routine vaccinations of a shot covering four of the five strains. today, friends of the young basketball player released balloons after school. holding a small vigil remembering a life taken too soon by a mysterious infection. >> surprised me of all people. he was a real good person. real good. >> reporter: meningitis is rare but the symptoms include a headache, vomiting and a stiff neck. doctors say it usually feels much worse than the typical flu and so far no other cases have been reported.

live in north philly, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> if you are questions, tap the nicole brown simpson 10 app. we have a link with information from the centers of disease control. delaware state police are questioning the driver who triggered a crash into a toll booth tonight. police say a car was rear ended around 7:30 when it stopped to pay cash at the i-95 toll plaza in newark. crews had to pry a trapped passenger from the car. she and three other people went to the hospital but are expected to be okay. 30th street station will never be the same. tonight, organizers unveiled a plan to transform the philadelphia landmark and it will have a major impact beyond the station itself. >> denise nakano is live in university city. denise, this can affect people even if they don't take the train. >> reporter: that's right. it is an overhaul of the 30th street station and a large piece of land behind, generating excitement and also some concern.

a plan nearly two years in the making to transform 30th street station and 175 acres around it was unveiled to the public first time. drawing support. >> we're excited. >> reporter: and criticism. >> this will have a net effect of choking the neighborhood so far as traffic and emergency services. >> reporter: philadelphia transportation hub will see the first phase of redevelopment with concourse improvements and a tunnel linking amtrak with septa trolleys and the l. >> i love the idea to expand that way. that is beautiful room and right now you don't see it only going to the bathrooms. >> reporter: the district plan proposes an urban neighborhood built over rail yards, green space, a user friendly changes for more riders. >> planning to expand areas within the concourse here at the 30th street station to be ready for the growth and infuse conveniences that people need today traveling.

>> reporter: some came to be the open house to voice concerns about the project and make sure current residents don't get pushed out. >> and that they have an opportunity to grow with the change, gain employment, okay, and be able to stay and live and take advantage of the wonderful changes that are coming to the 30th street corridor. >> reporter: the final plan will be released in early summer and a blueprint for 40 years of expansion. reporting live in university city, i'm denise nakano, nbc 10 news. only nbc 10 there today when firefighters and police teamed up to rescue a woman from a burning building here in south philadelphia. they used that construction ladder right there to bring her down carefully. this was the scene along north franklin around 3:00 this afternoon. the woman is just fine and not clear what caused the fire. turning to the weather now, we found a student in shorts on st. joe's campus this evening. don't get used it to. the mild temperatures about to

take a plunge and also tracking snow. >> that's right. let's bring in first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" swartz. when does this happen? >> the temperature goes down tomorrow and by the weekend, cold enough to snow. it's mild out there, a mild day. a mild day tomorrow. the last of the showers right there. moving in to northern new jersey so we're done with any kind of rain for the night. it is pretty mild. upper 40s to the low 50s right now. but it is going down. thursday's high, 66. we were 71 today. but then down to 56 friday. in the 40s saturday. maybe not out of the 30s on sunday. and that's the day watching this nor'easter developing and it may just be cold enough to produce period of snow. maybe even accumulating snow over parts of the area. more on the timing of this with the rest of the 7-day in a few minutes. >> okay. you won't want to speed up

in that weather but get ready for a faster ride this spring on the pennsylvania turnpike. the turnpike commission plans to boost the speed limit from 60 to 70. they tested it on a 100-mile stretch of the road for past 2 years and they found no changes in the number of accidents. areas now posted at 55, though, will not change. medical marijuana moves one step closer to being legal in pennsylvania. the house passed a measure today to let certain patients take marijuana in pill, oil or liquid form. patients would not be able to smoke it. the bill now goes to the senate which passed a similar measure last year. governor almost wolfe urged lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana. it is legal in new jersey and delaware. president obama's followed through on his promise to nominate a new supreme court justice. announcing his decision today. the president tapped merrick garland to fill the seat left by the late antonin scalia. the 63-year-old is chief judge for the u.s. court of appeals

for the district of columbia circuit. and emotional merrick spoke today about what this nomination means to him. >> fidelity to the constitution and the law has been the cornerstone of my professional life. and it's hallmark of the kind of judge i have tried to be. >> but senate majority leader mcconnell said that the senate will not consider the nomination. republicans say president obama should not be able to replace a supreme court justice during an election year. decision 2016, with a strong showing last night, donald trump has a commanding delegate lead. leading to more whispers about a contested convention. today on cnn, trump warned what he says could happen if he's denied the nomination while having the most delegates. >> i don't think you can say that we don't get it automatically. i think it would be -- i think you would have riots. i think you would have riots.

i'm tremendousing many, many millions of people. >> fresh off the win in ohio, governor john kasich back on the stump. he held a town hall atville that no va and shot down the notion playing a spoiler in the republican race. >> it is unlikely that anybody is going to achieve enough delegates to avoid a convention. >> kasich went on to say that neither trump nor senator ted cruz would stand a chance in the general election. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is out in front with another dominating performance last night. clinton is only 776 delegates shy of the nomination but bernie sanders isn't letting up. the vermont senator says a strong showing could give him the super delegates he needs to win. is son of a legendary crooner is himself silent tonight. frank sinatra jr. has died. ♪

sinatra jr. died in florida where he was on tour. his family said he died of a massive heart attack. the younger sinatra followed his famous father into the business as a singer and worked for his dad as musical director and conductor. sinatra jr. was 72. tonight, the 11-year-old son of a fallen philadelphia police officer accepted an award on his father's behalf. amere wilson accepted an exceptional act of courage award on behalf of his dad. sergeant wilson was inside a gamestop store last year buying a game for his son when he was shot and killed during a robbery attempt. wilson's partner stooenson was outside and he watched wilson's son receive the award tonight. >> for over a year now, i've been playing a lot of hings in my mind. crying like a baby.

i see his son, they have the same exact smile and that makes me smile. >> officer stevenson also received an award tonight for his heroism on the day sergeant wilson was killed. dogged determination. how a puppy survived falling overboard and days lost at sea. he was one of philadelphia's most notorious mobsters. why the city could be honoring the home where the gentle don lived and died. and mind your ps and qs. the woman publicly shaming people for relieving themselves on the side of her business. i'm tracking a big temperature plunge and then snow for part of the weekend. don't miss the details in my exclusive nbc 10 first alert forecast.

maryland is selling the very rare copy of it. it's expected to generate starting bids around $15,000. american soldiers found the book in hitler's apartment just days before he killed himself in 1945. philadelphia's known, of course, worldwide for the historic significance as the birthplace of american democracy. but tonight, a possible historic first in the country. landmark status for a philly home once owned by a less than honorable character. a reputed monster. from historic american iconic like betsy ross to ben franklin, we know where they lived in philly. >> if they allow you to come in -- >> mobsters better known for saying, we know where you live, did their homes deserve historic designations? some neighbors are all in. >> a lot of people love bruno. he was a really good guy and everybody really knew of him and they would be proud to see him

have a plaque. >> reporter: this two-story row house is one time home of anglo bruno, the fixer upper now not only up for sale but a designation of a landmark. the application filed by a local historian and mob watcher cites bruno as the catalyst for philadelphia becoming home to one of the first organized crime strike forces in the country. real store mario says the status could help it sell. >> right now, calls from texas about that property. >> reporter: it's no secret that red brick home's history stained by the blood of organized crime. bruno murdered right outside the door. a shotgun blast to the head in 1980 hitting in a parked car. the feds say he ran the philadelphia mob through the '60s and '70s. but these rarely seen family photos show the softer side of bruno. those who knew him have memories more in keeping with the nickname the gentle don.

mild. the temperatures not going to be dropping a lot in the rest of the night tonight. and it's going to be a nice, mild day tomorrow. 71 today. 66 tomorrow. if you like the warm weather that is it for a while. because friday we're down to 56. saturday down to 47. sunday even colder than that. and may not even get out of the 30s. we had some showers move through. right around 5:00, 6:00. and they were moving fast. even some lightning and thunder with that. but that has moved away. but we do have more showers back to the west and they are in the forecast over the next couple of days. they're -- we're not talking about a lot of rain or a lot of hours of rain but here's one batch coming through thursday afternoon after we get into the 60s. and then we dry out thursday night. here comes another batch. coming on friday. and so, we're going to continue with that shower threat.

then we watch the south where a nor'easter looks like it's going to develop. this is the european model, most accurate in the world. had this yesterday. other models are coming on board. it looks like it's cold enough. the track close enough to the coast to produce snow. maybe even accumulated snow. this is not a trivial event here and similar patterns in the past have produced snow in this part of the country. partly cloudy, unseasonably mild tonight. 48 for the low. and then during the day tomorrow, another very mild day. temperatures in the mid-60s. windier than today. gusts over 30 miles per hour and a few should recalls late in the day. take the umbrellas with you. windy and colder on friday rainy and then dry and cold and sunday that's the day. could be some rain and mostly snow and especially sunday night it could stick and then on monday, windy and cold. >> a special performance in

southwest philadelphia tonight. kids from the hms school for children with cerebal palsy and the philadelphia school showed off the musical talents tonight performing the return of haley's comet in front of a packed house. girls today and leaders tomorrow. tonight the united wait hosted the annual women leadership gala. nbc 10 anchor tracy davidson emceed the gala raising money for girls graduate high school. yeah, hey, we'll hear from all three philly teams leaving for the tournament. the eagles sign a receiver. and the flyers spin to win. what an effort tonight. highlights are next.

hey, i'm john clark. the flyers with a big win over the red wings last night at home. tonight a tough back to back on the road against the stanley cup champions. let's go to chicago. it is late first period. flyers down 1-0. mcdonald from the point. look at ryan white in front. we are tied up at 1. yeah. homey, let's do this. flyers down 2-1. look at the move from claude giroux. the spin for schenn. ties up the game. a pretty goal there. neuvirth outstanding in the third. hossa on the breakaway. stones him. gudas. deflects off of a blackhawks stick in front. flyers up 3-2. and then patrick kane on the doorstep. can't beat neuvirth. flyers win, 3-2. great win for them. they have moved into the final playoff spot for now.

they've won 8 of 10. they're the hottest team in hockey. >> everyone's buying in. you know? we're pretty structured hockey team right now. no one's selfish and resulting in wins and solid goaltending every night and that obviously helps and got to keep on pushing. we don't have an easy schedule. >> they're hot. eagles signed a receiver. givens with a one-year deal for the league minimum. here's some of their plays. he had close to 700 yards and 3 touchdowns. gifbls spoken with matthews and here's what jordan told him. >> just come join the way and we're doing special things. i agree with him. we want the career so it's just seemed like the right fit for me. all right. all three philly teams in the ncaa tournament left town today. nice sendoff for villanova on the campus. they play friday in brooklyn.
