because you just don't think that it's going to come to your house. you don't think that that is going to happen to your family and to your only son who for 20 years gave you no problems. >> nbc 10 reporter vince luftanzo got an insider's perspective on the world of addiction. vince and morgan know joining us now to talk about why you all chose this report on addiction and what you learned about it. you really were on the front lines of this for several months embedded in the world that so many of us don't have any involvement with. >> we think we don't have any involvement with, but in actuality it affects us in a lot more ways than we realized. personally, it was a personal situation. 15 years ago we lost my cousin jess toe heroin abuse and

overdose and it was devastating for our family. so when we had the opportunity to take a look at how thing his gotten exponentially worse over the next few years we jumped at that time and what we found is it affects way more people than we even realize. people don't talk about it so much. >> morgan, was this personal for y you? when we were reporting on the homeless youth special we were in kensington a lot and we had people just walking up to us saying you have to do something on the heroin down here. it is so bad. people get trapped. it was something we couldn't ignore. so what was it like interacting with people on a daily basis who were harp adikheroin addicts an opioid addicts? >> they were people like us. it affectious in a personal way. these are normal people who all

of a sudden whether it was that they were in a car accident and they were dealing with chronic pain and dealing with prescription pain killers and they got hooked and made the transition to heroin and it could have been someone dealing with some sort of mental issue or personal issue and they turned to these prescription painkillers to try to dull that pain and then they got hooked. >> for some people they look like you and me and they would have to roll up their sleeves and then you would see the signs of their drug addiction. >> yeah. one kid who you will meet in this special tonight, michael, we spotted him walking down to the tracks which is this place in kensington where they go to shoot up and we were just thinking he doesn't seem like he belongs here. he looks clean cut. he looks like a regular kid. he looks like my brother. he reminded me of my brother and we got to know him really well, and the fact is that he's a normal kid and like anyone else. he went to central high school and he graduated and he was going to drexel and he just fell

into this, you know, this addition and he is trying so hard to get out. his mom's supportive and they love each other to death, but it's just tough. >> you've spent so much time with these families. what is the problem here? is it the lack of resources once they get in so deep or does it happen well before that? their home life and the people they hang out with? >> it's a super complex issue. homeless youth is kind of easy. if you give money for resources for housing for young people and that would solve the problem and this is a bit of what the home life was. we don't have a good enough underlying mental health situation in our country but then trying to get into treatment is really tough and one of the things we learned over the course of the entire investigation is that people may have chosen to take a pill, but they didn't choose to get addicted to the drug. so once they get addicted it's really hard to get out so there isn't enough treatment for people to get out.
11:52 am
it's difficult for people to interface with different agencies to try to get out of this addiction and the biggest thing is we see it as a moral failing and it's actually a disease, so there's a lot of shame that comes with it where people weren't talking about it in the past and now that's probably the biggest thing that we're trying to change here is help people understand that stigma is hurting this cause. >> definitely, one that needs a lot of help. >> morgan, vince lattanzio, thank you so much. you've conveyed to us each though we think it doesn't affect us, it's close. generation addiction airs tonight at 7:00 right here on nbc 10 and only on nbc 10. we'll be right back.
