let's start with keir simmons. good morning. >> good morning. secretary kerry arrived this morning to the confirmation that two americans were killed. standing with the belgian prime minister, offering condolences to the victims and american families. and arriving to a country consumed with the man hunt for those connected with the attacks. >> reporter: overnight, new raids in a brussels suburb. six arrested. this morning, news that a seventh person has been apprehended in belgium. no answer at a building neighborhood searched by investigator investigators. >> do you know any people arrested? >> i saw some woman and a man, but i cannot -- >> couldn't recognize them? >> no. >> reporter: new video from inside an apartment, where it's believed tuesday's airport bombs were built. discarded tools, footprints in the bathroom, a smashed ipad. in a separate apartment a year ago, police seized a laptop

owned by abaaoud. a french newspaper reported this morning there were belgian documents, plans to attack an airport. the secretary of state arriving to offer condolences. >> to the people of belgium and all of the families, all those individuals who have suffered inconceivable loss in the last few days. >> reporter: reports that the brussels suicide bombers had secretly filmed a top scientist from a facility producing radioactive isotopes. while this brother told the news conference he was a nice boy, a graduate. police searched their house after the paris attack, but nothing more. belgi belgium's interior minister admitting they missed key leads. >> this is the most serious terror threat we've faced in

europe for a decade. 5,000 nationals, we think, have gone to isis. >> reporter: a man arrested. another plot at an advanced stage has been foiled. >> in many ways, matt, they are still struggling to get back to normal here. they had hoped the airport would reopen after a few days. they now say it won't open until march 27th, they think. that's sunday. >> keir simmons in brussels, thank you very much. as we mentioned at the top, two siblings from new york were among those killed in tuesday's attack. erica hill is in brussels with the story of the victims. good morning. >> good morning to you. that confirmation coming to nbc news not long ago this morning. alexander and sasha pinczowski are among the dead. last night, we got more confirmation. we initially heard a statement from the family saying they'd been given a list of people treated in hospitals and alexander and sasha's names were

not on the list. they didn't confirm their deaths at that time. that came this morning. there has been so many -- there have been so many questions surrounding the fate of alex and sasha. they were on the phone with relatives when the bombs struck. there have been people reaching out. alex's fiance's family also trying to get information. like so many, not just americans, but many families, they've been hindered by some of the privacy laws in belgium which, of course, are meant to protect patients. as we're hearing from officials, it is making it very difficult for some of those still wondering what has happened to their loved ones. >> reporter: as families wait, the state department admits it, too, is struggling to gain information. >> it's still, i know, two days later, very fluid. we're still trying to get accurate information. >> reporter: justin and stephanie shutz were last seen dropping her mother off at the airport. people working for the u.s. government remain unaccounted

for. an american training living in belgium was also at the airport tuesday. a friend confirmed she is in critical but stable condition. a dozen americans are known to have been injured. including richard norby, mason wells and joseph empey, all still in the hospital. 120 people are being treated, including 20-year-old fanny clain, who suffered burns to her head and hands. it sounded like the end of the world in one second, she said. i found myself on the ground, and there was ash everywhere. doctors described the injuries as similar to those in a war zone. the images of the aftermath leaving little doubt. as friends and family search for answers and do their best to hold on to hope. >> one of the things we're beginning to see here, you see the pictures of the memorials here in the place de la bourse, not far from where we are, we're

seeing people post pictures of the missing. that's what people are worried about this morning. as we're getting more confirmation on the identities of people not only in the hospital but those killed in the attack. their worst fears could be concerned. on alex and sasha pinczowski. their father is from the netherlands and they were making their way back to new york. they were on the phone with relatives at the airport when the blasts went off. >> unimaginable. erica hill, thank you. we'll have more on the situation in belgium coming up. but we turn to the race for president and the ongoing war of words over wives between donald trump and ted cruz. the texas senator blasting his rival. critics slamming both candidates for what they call a feud. peter alexander has more on this. >> how things changed in four months. then ted cruz gushed that donald trump was terrific. now though, he is fiercely

republican senator from nebraska said trump doesn't have the guts to say it to cruz's face. everyone with a sister, wife, daughter or mom should reconsider supporting this tiny little man. >> let's talk about the race itself. going toward the 1,237 delegates needed before the convention, trump says he thinks he can do it. he has the easiest path to do it before the convention. but if there is a contested convention, you've been doing reporting on the trump strategy. >> he's not taking chances. trump is quietly putting together basically a team of veteran political operatives to try to manage a contested convention. this is led by ben carson's former campaign manager. it's a two-phase strategy. the first focus in those crucial 40 days between the end of the primary season in june and the convention in july. they're working to get signed public commitments from what are called unbound delegates. folks who backed rubio or carson

or some from states where they're free to support whoever they want out of the gates. that could help trump secure the magic number of delegates needed before they get to the convention. the second phase, the deal maker, donald, is looking to make deals, focusing on getting delegates to stick with him. as a senior operative told my colleagues, it's everything from offering to do a fundraiser or whatever else a delegate may want to stay with trump. simply put, donald trump is working on an insurance policy to lock this thing up this summer in cleveland. >> you see a lot of wheeling and dealing before this is all done. peter alexander, thank you. >> the art of the deal. we've heard that before. also, the flight attendant accused of trying to smuggle millions of dollars worth of cocaine through security at lax goes back before a judge. we're now hearing from her attorney for the first time. here's nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer. >> reporter: marsha reynolds will be back in federal court today. the flight attendant who

police chase caught on camera in arizona. police were pursuing a white pickup truck when the driver stopped, trying to steal a motorcycle from underneath the rider. didn't work. he went back to the truck, lost control and flipped over. the driver has a criminal record and was wanted for leaving the scene a serious accident last week. a florida woman was trapped in her burning car after colliding with a tanker truck. one officer smashed the driver's window, but the woman is pinned by her seat belt. air bag and steering wheel. another officer races over, frees the woman. together, they pull the victim to safety before the flames engulfed the car. stunning video to see. let me send it back to matt right now. >> tamron, thank you very much. this morning, there's a new warning for anyone trying to have a baby.

researchers from the national institutes of health found that consuming caffeinated drinks, even before pregnancy, can raise the risk of miscarriage by 74%. nbc news medical contributor dr. natalie azar is here with what couples need to know. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> another part of the headline. it's not just women consuming the caffeine, it's men, as well. talk to me about this. >> what makes that interesting, matt, is multiple other studies have looked at caffeine intake for a woman during presidenc prd there can be adverse outcomes. this is men and women. >> let's talk about how far in advance of conception does this have an impact, and another after that. >> basically, what they did was follow couples until conception or up to 12 months. weeks and months prior to conception. they took diaries about alcohol

intake, cigarette smoking and caffeine intake. >> what levels are we talking about? >> greater than two beverages was associated with an increased risk. the obvious question is, what actually constitutes a serving? >> is that a small cup of coffee? is it a large, large, kcaffein e caffeinated drink? >> basically, one serving of coffee is considered -- a serving of caffeine is considered 8 ounces. roughly speaking, a regularly brewed cup of coffee will be around 95 to 200 milligrams of caffeine. it appears to be the cut off, if you talk to the people of the study. >> there's another part of the study that says, also, that women who drink two caffeinated drinks during the first seven weeks of pregnancy, more likely to miscarriage. >> a couple points, matt, i

think are important to reiterate for people. again, this was something called an observational study. it's not going to prove cause and effect. there are, also, some residual factors that could not be controlled. such as other dietary factors, lifestyle factors, that could also impact a woman's risk of miscarrying. >> if we want good news to ends on, the study suggests taking a multi-vitamin before or during pregnancy cuts your risk of miscarriage by 50%. >> exactly. not that that will offset the risk associated with caffeine, but to a lot of people, the take home message here, if you want to optimize your chances for a healthy pregnancy as a man, as a woman, look for different things. take your multivitamin. limit your caffeine. you certainly limit your alcohol. you stop smoking. you get a check-up with your doctor and make sure all other factors are in order. you also want to maintain a healthy weight going into a p t pregnancy. i don't want people to be concerned about the third cup of coffee on a daily basis.

books started reluctantly. growing up in rural oregon, she didn't learn to read until the second grade. only to find stories that didn't interest her much. >> so many books in those days, back in the 1920s, had been published in england. children had nannies and pony carts and they seemed like a bunch of sissies to me. >> reporter: she eventually became a school librarian and found that, like her, many kids just didn't relate to the books they had. >> i read a little boy came up to you and said, where are the books about kids like us? >> he didn't say it so nicely. he said, where are the books about kids like us? >> reporter: she decided to write them herself. more than 40 books in all, which kids like these as new york city's churchill school have come to love. >> how many of you have read beverly cleary? did you love them? >> yes. >> my favorite is ramona the

anti-biopic. it was described as -- i guess it means it's about a real person, but it's not one of these cradle-to-grave story of your life kind of things. >> no. it aspires more to be a movie about the jazz scene and the jazz world and about a romantic relationship. really use the legend of chet baker as kind of a jumping off place. like the director used to say this, in jazz, they take a classic song lieke "summertime" and riff on it. in a way, this is a riff of the life of chet baker. >> imagines how he might have been. was it 10 or 15 year ago, you almost made a movie about chet baker. >> i did. >> is he following you, or are you following him? >> i don't know. we're being called together somehow. i do, i feel like this movimovi "born to be blue," is a sequel to a movie i didn't make 15 years ago. >> speaking of where we are,

studio 1a, "today" show, we have a clip of when chet baker was on the "today" show. >> we'd like to do an original composition written by a young fellow named bob. recorded recently. called "slightly above moderate." >> i'll get out of the way. >> get a kick out of that? amazing to see, right? >> wow, that's so great. preparing for this part, we live in an amazie ining time. you see these amazing clips. it proves the point that a biopick can never capture a real person. our real lives are rich, dense, strange and boring and exciting. to make a movie, you kind of have to make a story worth watching. >> you did something amazing. it flips me out when actors are able to do this. you learned to play the trumpet and sing for this role. how do you take on something like that? >> it's the best part of my job. my job is like a joke, how much fun it is. i only learned ten songs.

my sister, when we were growing up, she didn't know how to play the piano but taught her to play scott joplin's "rag." >> that's impressive. >> it's all she did. i can't play the trumpet, but i can play "summertime." >> i read a story, you had gone into this studio, had a great day of recording, really difficult but you got it done. go back the next day and they tell you -- >> i had to sing "my funny valentine," not easy to do. we do it, amazing and we're going to break and do the next song the next day. i come back in, and the guy, this guy i've never met before, the recording engineer, he deleted it when we left. i said, it must be still in the computer or something. he's like, well, i emptied the trash. when is the last time you emptied the trash before yesterday? two and a half years ago. why would you do that? delete, empty, why? >> i thought they said nothing
