authorities hoped to open the airport, but now the airport will not reopen for flights until tuesday. today, heavily armed police on the streets of brussels with continuing fears of another attack. here in belgium, another day of drama. nine arrests in 24 hours. french president hollande saying we are in the presence of annihilating the cell. many far from reassured. >> it is still nervous actually. all the police force and military being on the streets is not that reassurinreassuring. >> reporter: in heart stopping images, armed police help a girl escape a suspected terrorist who witnesses say took a woman hostage when police approached him on the street. a bomb disposal robot gets a look before the suspect is

dragged away. he took a hostage and laid on top of her. she was with a little girl, this woman says. nerves in a city on edge. singer mariah carey cancelling a concert. saying i love my fans in brussels, but i must cancel for the safety of my band and crew and family and everyone. officials now confirming a link between a concert hall in paris where eagles of death metal were playing and the attacks in brussels. the airport suicide bomber, najim laachraoui, found with a suicide belt armed with the paris attacks. a terror network stretching across europe. there are increasing questions about the investigation. officials admit salah abdeslam is no longer cooperating with police. get this, guys, after the

attacks, the police communications systems failed. they had to use wasap to talk to each other. >> keir simmons, thank you. >> we are learning more about the victims of the attacks. this morning, two americans are still missing. meanwhile, the family of two new yorkers is grieving. nbc's morgan radford is here with that story. >> good morning, craig. good morning, sheinelle. a brother and sister hoping to make their dreams come true in new york city were killed while on the phone with their mom. while their family grieves, others are waiting for answers. >> reporter: scattered debris. piercing screams and panic survivors. >> my body lifted off the ground. >> reporter: 19-year-old mason wells was standing in the back of the delta check-in line feet from the bomb. >> i could feel the blast. i was covered in a fair amount of blood. not necessarily mine. >> reporter: now covered in

third degree burns, mason is lucky. siblings alex and sascha pinczowski were headed to new york. sascha recently graduated from college. alex soon to be married. while talking on the phone with their mom telling her they arrived at the airport safely, the line went dead. relatives traveled to belgium, but friday, authorities positively identified their remains. we are grateful to have closure, the family said in a statement. thankful for the loving support. support that has erupted on social media. new york senator chuck schumer says our city was their city. we mourn their senseless deaths. her friend posting on instagram. you are the shining star of my day and the angel that will be with me forever. kentucky couple justin and

stephanie shults dropped their mom off at the airport and have not been heard from since. and all these three hospitalized leaving a fear in belgium. >> now it feels like we're living in a war zone at times or living in a society under threat. >> reporter: under threat, united by grief. >> families of both the missing and deceased are currently in belgium this morning. the pinczowskis are making funeral arrangements and shults' are looking for clues. >> thank you, morgan. the pentagon says it is eliminating the leaders of isis after killing the group's number two in command. special forces surrounded a car carrying haji imam this week. a gun battle broke out and imam was killed. the u.s. successfully targeted

other isis leaders, including a so-called minister of war killed by a air strike earlier this month. don barelli is a former joint force member and now a national security analyst. don, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's start with the bombings in brussels and attacks in paris. obviously people in europe are jittering and on edge. how dangerous is the situation there right now? >> it's dangerous. you have hundreds and hundreds of these young men and women and in some cases gone to syria. they have the training, indoctrination and returned home and recruited more people. we have seen the cells in paris and brussels. how many more cells are out there? how many more bombmakers are out there? what plots are in the works right now? arrests in germany. it is a network. >> don, you have belgium, roughly the size of the state of maryland. we know about the porous borders. how else is it this country has

become such a hotbed of violent radical jihadi terrorists? >> i think there are a couple of things. number one, the large population that has not been well integrated into mainstream society. they live in insular communities. they identify with isis and not belgium. they have the services that was not acknowledging there was a problem in its too late. now it is playing catch up with how many of these people are out there plotting to do bad things. >> let's talk about the situation in the united states. here in new york city, i was with my 6-year-old. at times square, you have men out with rifles. how concerned should we be? >> be concerned, but not overly concerned. we have to live our lives. the situation in the u.s. is different than europe. we have less of these people who traveled. we have been at this for a while. it's not perfect. obviously we make mistakes.

we saw what happened in san bernardino as an example of someone becoming self radicalized and get weapons and go on a rampage. that shouldn't not stop us. >> before you go, with regards to isis in the middle east. pentagon reporting that the so-called second in command is now dead. is isis on the ropes in the middle east? >> i don't know if they on the ropes. it takes so much good timely targeted intelligence to do an operation like that. being able to be successful shows me we're making ground there. particularly developing intelligence in that inner circle. >> don, thank you. >> thank you. on to politics now. just when you thought things could not get more heated or personal, they have. ted cruz is now defending himself against allegations that he had several affairs. charges he categorically denies. he insists donald trump is

i'm very happy now. >> thank you very much for coming to cuba. >> thank you very much, rolling stones. ♪ >> reporter: for "today," sarah dallof, nbc news. we have an incredibly heart warming reunion with an army specialist and his beloved dog rocky. they were wounded in afghanistan. you may remember the photo that went viral after they were hurt. they were reunited on friday and they could not be happier. nbc's kerry sanders has more from washington, d.c. for us. this is a great story, kerry. >> good morning, craig. rocky is appropriately named. rocky is a come from behind hero just like the movie. this morning, it may put a smile on your face and maybe a tear in your eye. rocky. u.s. army combat veteran. to see him today, you would be hard pressed to know a roadside

bomb left him lame. you may remember this viral photo. rocky sitting on the bed with his partner, army specialist andrew brown. the two initially recovering together at the u.s. military hospital in germany. yes, that's a purple heart on rocky's collar. like any other member of the u.s. military, rehabilitating rocky's back left leg. his femur shattered in pieces. became a mission. >> painful injury. had a lot of skin missing. burn injury from the blast itself. >> reporter: seven weeks into his recovery and progress. >> he's a great temperament. that is easy with the exercises and having him here. >> reporter: three and a half months from the bomb exploded, rocky is quick, alert, strong. finally a day of celebration.

leaving behind those who had taken rocky so far. a veteran now homeward bound. back on u.s. soil at walter reed hospital, a reunion. that moment when a long deployed soldier finally sees family again. >> he saw me. he was like, oh, there's my dad. >> reporter: specialist andrew brown. himself still going through physical therapy. and whether rocky returns to work or not, one thing is for certain, he will return to specialist brown's care. the two bonded in service, bonded for life. >> feels good to see him pretty much back to normal for the most part. >> reporter: rocky is still active duty. so later this weekend, he will report for duty in ft. hood in texas. the brass there will decide if he will be returned to active duty or if rocky retires.

masses going on morning. look for sun and then clouds thickening later in the day. >> karen, thank you. new from overnight, police witness a shooting in southwest philadelphia and trying to chase down the suspects. police say around midnight an officer witnessed someone firing shots from a car. the car sped away. the officer tried to stop it. the car then crashed into some parked vehicles. several men took off running. police were able to catch up with one of them. investigators found a shotgun inside that car. the victim is in stable condition. following a developing story. the coast guard is searching for missing boaters off the shore in atlantic county. three or four people are missing. their fishing boat capsized yesterday afternoon about half mile off the coast. coast guard crews from new jersey, virginia and north carolina are all helping with that search. that's all the news for now. i'm katy zachary. now back to the "today" show. coming up at 8:30 we'll have a
