news." also tonight, from the doctor's office to the courtroom. a bucks county pediatricianian was growing marijuana in his home. he is also accused of selling it. >> but tonight he is telling a different story. deanna durante was at the courtroom in bucks county today. what did you learn? >> reporter: we're hear for a preliminary hearing, one where the defense thought they would get a look at lab tests that prosecutors had done on the evidence they took from the doctor's home. instead prosecutors said the lab work wasn't finished so the hearing was continued. the pediatrician's lawyer is saying no one can prove what was inside that house. >> i wanted to see if there was anything you wanted to say. >> talk to the attorney. >> we did. but first we wanted to stop by the bucks county home owned by dr. jan widerman and his wife. the garage remains boarded up after a february car fire that brought police and firefighters inside the home. and that's how police say they discovered 40 marijuana plants.

all growing inside a locked room in the garage area. police say the rooms were outfitted with special ventilation and grow lights and they found dried marijuana as well as more than $16,000 in cash inside a safe. >> this doctor dedicated his life to the service and healing of others, he is a decent human being. >> the defense attorney says he came to court expecting a preliminary hearing but the lab testing on the plants hasn't been finished so prosecutors asked for a continuance. >> he was selling this? >> honestly it's a thorough investigation, there is a charge on the complaint of possession with intent to deliver and or manufacture. we're trying to make sure a thorough investigation and recover what may be evidence of any crimes committed. >> they are alleging possession with intent to deliver. >> i'm alleging neither. >> now this preliminary hearing has been moved to early may. we did check with the state and

the doctor is licensed to practice here in pennsylvania, we went to his office in northeast philadelphia. the office was open, staff members told us that the doctor was not in today. deanna durante, "nbc 10 news." we're learning that a long time villanova professor is facing child porn charges. radnor police say dr. christopher haas used a computer on campus. he has been the target of a homeland security investigation since 2012. and the university did not know about it. >> it's sad. it's disappointing someone in the educational environment would behave this way and have this type of information on their computer. >> the history and classical studies professor worked at villanova since 1988. villanova has now banned him from campus. the university said in a statement this afternoon that

the school is horrified. >> the war of words escalated today between the governor of new jersey and the mayor of atlantic city. atlantic city is working to stop a city government shutdown by stretching its payroll to the limit tentatively. the proposal is to pay employees every 28 days instead of bi-weekly allow the city to pay its bills after it collects may 1 taxes. today governor christie said it accomplishes nothing. we asked are the residents of atlantic city being held hostage by this political fight? >> not yet. but you know, the bottom line is that if the speaker doesn't act he's going to be putting those folks in a position where their government has no money. and i'm not going to put the people of new jersey in the position of writing another blank check to atlantic city. >> we're in this situation because the governor didn't give us 33 -- he is withholding that. >> the governor says pilot tax

bill and tax are not approved north jersey casinos will fail and he will fight that. >> now to our first alert weather. temperatures climbed into the 70s today. here is a live look at boathouse row in philadelphia. you can see just off in the distance crews out on the river. hopefully you were able to enjoy some of that nice weather today. the nbc 10 first alert radar showing us rain that's headed our way. pretty soon. >> sheena parveen is tracking it as well for us. what are the details? >> the rain won't be here until early tomorrow, maybe showers overnight but you can enjoy the warm weather for the rest of the day today because we're still in the 70s right now 73 degrees in philadelphia, 73 northeast philly, 73 in dover. the lehigh valley around 70, much of new jersey in about the mid to upper 60s right now. it is windy outside, though i'm sure you noticed it today. a very strong south wind gusting near 30 miles an hour through

most of the area. this is responsible for the warm air that's here so it's really pulling up the warm temperature from the south and we're going to continue with the wind direction tomorrow so still a warm day if not warmer than today. currently we're dry, the closest rain is pretty far off to our west in western p.a., it's light rain, if anything maybe a few light showers overnight tonight. but the real rain and thunderstorms, that's farther to the west through the middle part of the country, moving through the midwest and that will be here as we go into tomorrow. here's a look at future weather. there is all of the rain that will be moving into the area overnight and early tomorrow morning. so now we're looking at friday morning, scattered showers around for the morning commute. can't rule out thunderstorms and even as we go into the afternoon tomorrow, we have a chance for thunderstorms still and we're really not going to see a lot of clearing until we get closer to sunday. coming up a closer look at your friday morning commute and the timing of the rain tomorrow as well as a colder weekend

forecast. that's all straight ahead. >> now to new information about the two men accused of killing a philadelphia police officer. police now say they have tied carlton hicks to eight armed robberies, his brother ramon allegedly committed nine armed robberies. the two are held for killing sergeant robert wilson iii last year. it was march 5 when wilson was picking up a gift for his son. police say the two brothers walked in, allegedly announced a robbery and shot and killed wilson. >> city of philadelphia is apologizing to major league baseball great jackie robinson when robinson visited philly in 1947, he was refused service at a hotel and the phillies hurled racial slurs at him every time he came to bat. today city council passed a resolution naming april 15th as the day to honor robinson's achievements, the apology will be presented to robinson's

widow. all right. let's head to houston now. villanova continues their march to victory. >> yeah, team holding its first practice today. they get ready for the final four. john clark's joining us from houston. john, for one player on the team this final four has turned into kind of a family affair. >> reporter: yeah, this is a story about brotherly love, and it really could be a moochie scent. three years ago in high school kris jenkins and north carolina's nate brit, they were watching villanova face north carolina in the national championship game. actually not the national chance game but in the tournament. and this weekend if they both win on saturday, they could play each other in the national championship. this is quite a story. they are not blood brothers. they became brothers when chris's mom felt he wasn't in the right crowd in south carolina. she sent him to live with nate brit's family in maryland, in

sixth grade. nate senior was a hoops coach and chris's mom felt the brits would provide a more stable environment for him. >> it was tough at first but you know, the brits, they accepted me and the whole family just made me feel so welcome and they accepted me for who i was, and elevated me as a person and made me better. and it's something that i'm always thankful for. i thank god for it every day. >> i can't imagine, had to be extremely hard on him but i think he adapted pretty well. >> the bros became basketball bff's. on the same aau and high school teams and extremely competitive. >> we hate to lose more than we like winning. so that's it right there. >> now, they have both made it to college basketball's biggest stage. the final four. a dream they had as kids. >> we talk a great deal about it and we just making sure that you know, we both stay focused. >> i don't think we ever thought

talk about a winning week for philadelphia hotels during the ncaa men's basketball east regionals. that event combined with a volley ball tournament made for a record breaking easter weekend at hotels, the two events brought more than 30,000 visitors to the area, at the height 23,000 hotel rooms booked and it brought about $40 million to the region. >> philadelphia's logan community will get a chance to learn more about mayor jim ken's concept of community schools the mayor will attend a briefing at james logan school on lindley avenue. community schools not only teach children but offer medical clinics and police substations. the mayor plans to start implementing a community model in five to seven schools by september. >> police on the hunt for what they call a sadistic killer after this upper darby woman was

his party, the republican candidate suffering backlash from the gop and democrats over his call to pun ush women who would have illegal abortions should it be outlawed. trump later flip-flopped on the issue and the damage was done though. ted cruz and hillary clinton. just 24% of women backed trump in this week's poll in wisconsin though trump's sooler pac is running several ads trying to appeal to women. >> every other time he opens his mouth it's something that's derogatory to women. >> he's constantly portray women as inferior. >> after his meeting with the gop trump tweeted he is looking forward to bringing the party together. coming up in our next half hour can trump survive this latest controversy. we asked our political expert and look ahead to trump's chances in the general election if he is the nominee. >> new information about a teenager pepper sprayed during a donald trump rally.

police in wisconsin release add picture of a man they want to talk to in connection with the possible assault. officers believe the man in the make america great again hat may have pepper sprayed the teen. she says she was groped in the crowd and punched by someone. that's when she was pepper sprayed. a win in pennsylvania for texas senator ted cruz. the state supreme court dismissed a case against cruz that sought to keep him off the state gop primary ballot and serving as president. a pittsburgh man argued that cruz is not eligible to run for president because he was born in canada. the law says eligible candidates include those born to an american citizen regardless of where cruz's mother was born in the u.s. gop presidential candidate john kasich is campaigning in philadelphia tonight, taking a live look at the union league of philadelphia on south broad where kasich will speak any moment now. there is the podium waiting for him. more on his comments once they begin. tomorrow he heads to hershey and

harrisburg. pennsylvania's primary is less than a month away now. delaware's primary is also on april 26. new jersey voters, they go to the polls on june 7. a new government report suggests there's no change when it comes to how common autism is among children in our country. according to the centers for disease control and prevention, one in 68 children were identified with autism spectrum disorder that reflect no change from the previous report in 2014. the survey sample consisted of eight-year-olds from 11 communities. the cdc says the lack of change is noteworthy because autism estimates had been steadily increasing. >> fighting for equality. that was the message today from the transgender community in philadelphia and around pennsylvania. they are pushing for new laws that would protect them from discrimination. lauren mayk has more. >> reporter: outside philadelphia's city hall, the

pink, blue and white flag represents transgender pride. you see it here in kensington too. a philadelphia deputyp police commissioner stands as a proud ally of those who told their stories on a day the city dedicated to transgender visibility. >> i went to my high school counselor's office and she specifically told me not to kill myself until i was out of high school. >> i had strange men come up to me and proposition me for sex based on my appearance. >> along with concerns over safety they wanted to bring attention to work worries. pressing for changes in pennsylvania to protect them from discrimination. >> at work i don't like to present as feminine so i can avoid being fired because i don't quite feel that my workplace is safe enough to express myself like that. >> amy worried about discrimination looking for a job. >> if they looked up 25 years of work history what they found was a different name and so it pretty much is a large bull's

now but it is still warm out and it's still very windy. overcast skies looking out across center city. warm and windy as we go through your evening and through most of tonight. tomorrow, though, all this cloud cover will be bringing rain. we could see rain as late as overnight or as early as overnight but then thunderstorms through your day friday. we could have some in the morning for the commute and maybe even some in the afternoon too. after that leaves, temperatures will be dropping for the weekend, so it's going to get colder again, you can say good-bye to the 70s, we still expect them tomorrow, though, overcast skies through the philadelphia aerks really most of the area now. 73 degrees in philadelphia, winds sustained right around 20 miles an hour and the winds still gusting from 20 to 30 miles per hour and that strong south wind pulling in the warmer air. it will continue to do so as we go into friday. a live look at satellite and radar, the clouds are with us but not the rain. not yet. the closest rain is off in western pennsylvania, it's fairly light so anything that

would move through overnight will be fairly light. heavier showers off to the west to the east of chicago moving into ohio, but as we go into tomorrow, we could even see thunderstorms with the rain that's moving in. here's future weather so. tonight we pretty much stay dry. the clouds keep increasing, overnight maybe showers and here's the morning commute. 7:00, 8:00 in the morning dealing with spotty showers around, can't rule out a thunderstorm developing either. temperatures around 70 degrees for the morning commute. by lunch time tomorrow, temperatures in about mid-70s, some areas if the we get a good enough break in the cloud cover could jump up to the upper 70s, and by 1:00 p.m. still seeing potentially a line of showers and thunderstorms moving in. same thing as we go into the afternoon. 4:00 p.m., we could have another line developing and moving through, so keep your umbrella with you as we go through the whole day but it is going to stay fairly warm. even by 8:00 tomorrow evening we're not going to get that colder air in yet. we should still be around 70 degrees. we go into the weekend and some

of this rain we do expect to be lingering saturday morning through new jersey and delaware. we could have a wave up from the south. that's when we'll see the cooler air also here. so by the early morning hours we'll be around the 40s and 50s with the rain, by 9:00 a.m., still looking at showers, mostly south of philadelphia. then we go through saturday afternoon, a little bit better as far as clearing up. but temperatures will be noticeably cooler. we will be getting cooler again going into the weekend but the 70s are still going to be with us through the day tomorrow. some areas going to be in the upper 70s. look at the drop-off into sunday. so that's the colder air i was telling you about. aside from 60s for a high saturday, sunday will be down in the 40s. tonight though, mild and windy, a chance of a late shower which would mostly be overnight tonight. 62 for the low in philadelphia, 57 degrees, areas north and west. tomorrow showers and thunderstorms, some as early as the morning commute. some of that could also be in the afternoon as well. warm and windy, 76 to 79 degrees through the area.

so very warm end to the week saturday some lingering showers to the south. high temperatures in the 60s mid to low 60s, colder sunday. then next week, we have another round of rain monday some of that could be a wintry mix on tuesday. overseas a bridge collapsed in india, killed at least three people. rescue workers are trying to reach others trapped. a portion of an overpass fell onto a street. building collapses are common where builders use substandard materials. >> back at home, in philadelphia candles will light the evening sky soon to remember the victims of recent terror attacks. going to take a live look at city hall where the candlelight vigil and peace rally at 7:30 sponsored by the pakistan american society of south jersey. on sunday you recall a suicide bombing killed at least 72 people at a public park in pakistan, most of the victims were women and children, a group linked to the taliban has taken

an update on a severely injured puppy we told you about last week. 6-month-old clover was found in a home with severe cuts to her neck. thanks to donations she will undergo reconstructive surgery. somebody tied the dog. she was left there for about four weeks. >> new options for pet owners in burks couldn't, a new animal hospital opened and accepting patients in reading on north 11th street. the facility has extra exam rooms, digital x-ray machines and dental suites because of the space the facility is expected to help at least 50% more people. and pets too.

just hours before her death. >> it's such a shame. i feel very bad for her family. she is in my prayers. >> benson had injuries all over her face and neck caused by a sharp object. >> thanks for that, drew. changes are coming following the nbc 10 heroin series generation addicted. today the delaware council launched a new strategy to encourage treatment, a recovery specialist program, two people who are trained will respond to reports of overdoses and then connect the survivors with treatment for their addiction. this program launches tomorrow. >> we know that this is one more step, one more piece of the puzzle but we believe that the recovery specialist program will give overdose survivors and their families the hope they need and a path to stop the addiction. >> we have the story of a former addict now leading a very

with rain of it we stay dry for now, showers off to the west, very light rain showers of it but we take a wider view and we look farther to the west we have heavier showers and thunderstorms, those are going to be heading our way for tomorrow morning. now, here's future weather overnight we could see light spotty showers, but into the morning commute tomorrow, that's when we expect more rain to start to move in. overcast skies for the morning commute by 8:00 a.m. with scattered showers around, for new jersey and delaware 8:00 a.m. temperatures from about 66 to 68 degrees. a chance of a shower and the rain chance will be increasing as we go through the day. still warm temperatures. i'll show you a timeline of the rest of tomorrow afternoon, and a cooler weekend forecast coming up. new information about the breaking news that we've been following out of richmond, virginia, state police there just held a news conference about the shooting at a greyhound bus station that happened earlier this afternoon. they now say a total of four people were shot including one state trooper.

and the gunman is dead. the trooper is being treated for life threatening injuries. the nbc affiliate in richmond had been reporting that the trooper was dead, but state police will not confirm that. all they are saying is that the trooper is being treated for life threatening injuries. what we know about this incident that investigators say that the trooper was doing a training exercise at the bus station when a gunman pulled out a gun and shot him. we'll continue to follow this breaking story and bring you new information as soon as we get it. to other news happening now, gop presidential candidate john kasich has begun remarks at the union league of philadelphia. kasich is spending the next couple days campaigning here in pennsylvania, tomorrow he heads to hershey and harrisburg. today pennsylvania governor tom wolf made another push to increase the state's minimum wage. the governor held events in wilkes-barre. he wants the state to approve an

increase for every worker. earlier wolf signed an executive order that increases the minimum wage for state workers to $10.15 an hour. right now pennsylvania's minimum wage stands at $7.25 an hour, in new jersey it's $8.38 and delaware's minimum wage is $8.25 an hour. ♪ i can't do that. singer sir elton john and his band are coming to town. big show. their 9-city tour will stop in allentown for a concert featuring his iconic hits along with tracks from his latest album. he will perform at ppl center on september 27th, the tickets go on sale a week from tomorrow. they are the best in the world. but the u.s. women's soccer team says they are not treated like it when it comes to pay. now they are fighting for wage equalitiment we'll hear from them coming up next at 5:00.

his campaign so far. but trump has come back from a lot of bad publicity before. but a lot of anger about his abortion comments even from anti-abortion advocates. does this fade away or continue to hurt him? >> i think this one hurts for a long time to come. what he's been trying to do is appeal to non-party identified voters, especially democrats which he would need to win in the fall. and this level of total political unawareness and even misogyny i think will hurt him. >> shawna, obviously he is the front-runner. if he gets the nomination talk to us what we know in terms of the polls how he'll stack up against hillary clinton or bernie sanders in a general election. >> so, right now what we're seeing is that either of them look like they could beat him in a general election. the polls are fluctuating now because it is not a realistic enough proposition for good

in the 60s, some spots could be in the upper 50s north and west. we could see light rain showers try to move in overnight tonight. locally though, no rain, not yet. just overcast skies. the closest rain is to our west now starting to move into maryland but the brunt of all of this wet weather, that's going to be here tomorrow so. what you see moving into ohio and down through parts of the south, that's our rain for tomorrow. and some of that could be starting as early as the morning commute for you. so here's a look at future weather tonight. we keep seeing the clouds move in, some light showers possible, overnight tonight, then for the morning commute here's 8:00 in the morning. so if you leave at 8:00, through the lee high value and the poconos you could see showers around, some could be thunderstorms for the rest of the area, temperatures around 70 degrees, a chance of showers, and then as we get closer to lunch time a chance for thunderstorms, temperatures warming into mid-70s. we could have a line trying to

form through the lehigh valley but we'll be watching that closely. even by 4:00 p.m. tomorrow we could have a line of showers, maybe thunderstorms moving through thor a and into new jersey before we finally start to clear out. more as we go into your friday evening. so friday evening, looking better than the first half of the day friday. then we go into saturday, here's 5:00 saturday morning we have rain, then it will move back into new jersey and delaware so the best chance of saturday morning rain will lie south of philadelphia, 9:00 a.m. saturday you still see the rain in new jersey and delaware, then we finally do start to clear out more as we go into your sunday. that's when temperatures will start to drop off. for tonight, 57 for the low in allentown, 60 in pottstown. 62 philadelphia. we're going to be mild overnight. mild and windy we could see a chance of some late showers, moisture overnight. then tomorrow, that rain chance is going to be increasing especially starting with the morning commute into the middle of the day, around lunch time. temperatures from 76 to possibly
