nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 11:00, the baby who disappeared from king of prussia mall last night is safely back with his family this morning. and the woman taken into custody in the case will soon go before a judge. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. we are expecting to learn more about the suspect once the police file charges. nbc 10's drew smith is live for us at district court in king of prussia where the hearing is being scheduled. drew, what have you learned? >> reporter: well, i just talked with the police chief, vai. and he tells me he's right now writing up the paperwork which will detail all of the charges that this accused kidnapper will face. i also spoke with the judge here who tells me he is prepared for an arraignment here at district

court at 1:30 this afternoon. it was surveillance video from the king of prussia mall last night that brought in a lot of tips. it was about this woman and where people spotted her with the baby. she is accused of befriending a family in the food court. she walked up, just like a stranger, but she eventually ran off with the 7-week-old when she went to care for it when it was crying. police moved from point to point in both montgomery and chester counties eventually finding her and a baby at a home when that news reached dozens of the baby's family members gathered at the upper merion police station there was a huge sense of relief after hours of waiting and agony. still, the family wants to know why a family would take an infant like this. that baby's grandfather spoke to nbc 10. >> she might have a problem. the lady might have a problem. i ain't going to say i'm going to forgive her.

>> reporter: the baby got checked out last night. everything seems okay. police are not releasing the name of that woman. we expect to learn it later today. drew smith, nbc 10 news. drew, thank you. shoppers meanwhile saw a chaotic scene outside the king of prussia mall as police combed the parking lot last night. officers searched cars as they tried to leave the mall to check for that missing baby. this morning the king of prussia mall posted this statement on their facebook page. everyone here at the king of prussia mall is heartened and relieved by the safe return of baby simmons to his parents and family. it went onto say the king of prussia mall is a safe and family friendly environment and we maintain state-of-the-art security protocol. the safety of our customers is of utmost priority and we are happy to reunite the baby with his family. and if you have a smartphone, you probably got an alert on your phone about this amber alert. it would have looked something like this. and if your phone ringer was turned on, the loud alarm would

is here with the forecast. >> hi, vai. the first storms won't last long. they are right on track. we talked about this first thing this morning when we went on the air before the "today" show. the storms moving through delaware, south jersey. they've already cleared delaware. the now heavy downpours with strong gusty winds are moving past atlantic city into burlington county and ocean county. look at the lightning with those heavy downpours. they're moving fast. they'll be in ship bottom about 15 minutes from now. they'll be moving offshore, but there are more showers and the potential for more thunderstorms even in the wake of these storms. but it's not going to be ab all-day rainfall. you can see light rain falling in philadelphia. the next line doesn't look impressive just yet, but this will likely fire up this afternoon. and it could impact the evening commute. so there go the storms that we're watching right now at the shore. this is 2:00 this afternoon. pretty quiet. in fact, we might see some breaks in the clouds and get some sunshine. and that's going to send our temperatures even higher than they are right now.

but look at this, 3:00 this afternoon we're starting to see the development of that next line of showers. and during the afternoon commute there's 6:00 this evening from the trenton area through some of the suburbs into philadelphia, wilmington and even southern new castle county that line of storms will be moving through the area. that's when we could see another round of thunderstorms this afternoon. so it's going to be a dreary day and occasionally a stormy one, but so unusual for this time of year. the temperatures which have soared and are going to stay elevated right on through this afternoon. 1:00 some mainly light showers. then we'll be watching for that next line developing at 4:00 and some storms in the picture for 7:00 this evening. and there are some big changes ahead for the weekend too. wait until you see the seven-day forecast. i've got that for you when i come back in just a few minutes, vai. thank you, bill. we're following villanova's march to victory. a group of students are hitting the road at this hour to follow the team. nbc 10's rosemary connors is

going along. did they get off okay? >> reporter: they did get okay, vai. a soggy sendoff, but didn't dampen the students. the students taking the chartered flight villanova organized should take off around 11:30 this morning. and skies look pretty good. they shouldn't have any problems. for the students it was about a $700 ticket to get this chartered flight. that's compared to about $1,000 that some students had to pay to get flights to houston from philly international. so a little bit of a deal. there are about 700 students total heading down to houston no matter how they get there. that's how many tickets were available to the kids. and they got them at pretty deep discount, $40 for saturday's game and $40 for monday's game if villanova can beat oklahoma. of course that's what everybody's thinking about going into tomorrow considering villanova had a tough loss against the sooners in december. but you know what, the students are confident.

one of them is to stop buddy heel. don't miss it here on nbc 10 news at 11:00. or 7:00 rather. time now for a check on the roads with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. what are you seeing, jessica? >> vai, we're doing okay in terms of volume, but we are watching some wet and potentially slippery roads out there. this is route 73 right around the atlantic city expressway. so not a lot of cars clearly on the road, but you can see when cars move by water spraying out from underneath and every once in a while you see drops move past the camera lens. this is the schuylkill expressway around the vine street expressway. very zoomed in and right underneath this overpass here we have a disabled vehicle. you can see the flashers on. not a clear picture what's going on except it's a disabled vehicle on to the shoulder which will create some delays. some construction outside center city 33rd street northbound between south street and market street reduced to one lane. jam ups there. also in montgomery county, an kpent in cheltenham.

if you are taking a flight. there are still some delays at philadelphia international airport due to weather. about 20 minutes for arriving flights at the airport. check if you're departing as well before you go this morning, vai. thank you, jessica. skyforce 10 was over this accident in montgomery county this morning. one person died when two cars collided at welsh road and 40 foot road. it happened around 5:00 this morning. investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of this crash. and a police officer is recovering from minor injuries following an accident in center city. authorities tell us a drunk driver collided with the cop's suv at broad and vine. that happened about 4:00 this morning. the driver of that other vehicle is okay. there's no word if authorities plan to charge that person. and we have an update on the financial crisis in atlantic city. governor chris christie says the state is trying to rescue the people of a.c. from their local government. one week from today city employees will cash their only paycheck for a month.

a.c. mayor says the city is in this situation because governor chris christie is withholding $33.5 million. meanwhile, christie fired back saying a.c. spends two to three times more perez de resident thy other city in the state of new jersey. create alternative tax payments for casinos are the only solutions. donald trump has a surprise meeting with the republican party leadership. and we'll tell you what was discussed. meanwhile, hillary clinton appeared to lose her cool on the campaign trail. we'll show you what happened when she confronted one protester. we'll have that coming up. the tornado caught on camera, and it was just part of a series of storms that moved through the south. we'll have more on the severe weather's impact. bill. >> we're going to lose our warm over the weekend. much colder air will be moving in, and strong potentially damaging winds as well. we'll go through it day by day with the seven-day just ahead.

hour. the meeting was scheduled prior to trump's comments supporting some form of punishment for women who get abortions if the procedure were to become illegal. trump later reversed himself and said his original comments were taken out of context. and republican ted cruz's name will appear on pennsylvania's primary ballot. the texas senator won a case in the state supreme court that challenged his citizenship. a pittsburgh man argued cruz is not eligible because he was born in canada. for the democrats, hillary clinton campaigned in the new york suburbs yesterday. and for what could be the first time in her campaign she appeared to lose her cool. watch and listen to this exchange between clinton and an environmental activist supporting bernie sanders. >> will you act on your words and reject -- >> i am so sick -- i am so sick of the sanders campaign lying -- >> clinton also spent some time

yesterday criticizing donald trump for his comments on abortion. well, belgium's prime minister and key members of the government are meeting right now to decide when brussels airport will reopen. the airport has made repairs from last week's terror attacks and plan to partially reopen for flights this evening. but airport police say they will strike if additional security measures are not implemented. suicide bombers targeted the airport in the subway station killing 32 and injuring dozens of others. the subway station remains closed. now to virginia where a state trooper who was shot at a bus station in richmond has died from his injuries. the gunman was killed by other officers. an investigation is underway. nbc's correspondent pete williams has the latest. >> reporter: gunfire mid afternoon at a bus station in downtown richmond. >> on scene greyhound terminal, multiple victims, this is going

to be a mass casualty working incide incident. >> reporter: travelers duck for cover or rush to get out. others duck inside and turned and ran. >> i heard two gunshots go off. i didn't think they were gunshots, but then there were maybe five or ten more after that. and i could see the muzzle flash through the tinted door. and so i ran out of there. >> reporter: laurmt officials say state police were conducting a counter-drug training mission that included talking to people in the bus station. they say trooper chad dermyer, age 37, wearing a uniform, approached a man to ask some routine questions. >> the male subject pulled out a handgun and shot chad multiple times. the male subject continued firing his weapon as two other state troopers returned fire. >> reporter: the gunman ran but was shot and killed. >> medics, the shooter is down. >> reporter: the wounded trooper was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. two women inside the terminal were wounded by gunfire though not seriously, and were hospitalized for treatment. police are not revealing the gunman's name. they say he had a criminal

record and was not from virginia. some officials say he had mental problems. >> that was nbc's justice correspondent pete williams reporting. for a second night severe weather slammed through the south. look at this. this is some of the damage in alabama last night. the storm knocked down trees and power lines not far from the city of huntsville, although there was significant damage, no one was hurt. the national weather service will determine if a tornado caused that damage. and a tornado over the mississippi delta was caught on cell phone video. again, no one was hurt here yesterday. heavy rains also caused flooding and prompted evacuations throughout the state of mississippi. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's a wild weather friday. warm temperatures, clouds to start with and tracking some showers and some thunderstorms through the area. we've seen some already this morning. and there are more in store for us later this afternoon and this

evening. we'll get some breaks in the rain and warm winds will continue through this afternoon. we're already in the 70s. we'll warm into the middle to upper 70s this afternoon. but the weekend a totally different weather picture. a cold blast arrives on sunday. and it may bring some snowflakes. this morning it's just ra rain falling and in atlantic city it's steadier there. 60s at the shore. 62 atlantic city while northeast philadelphia and allentown warming into the upper 60s and low 70s. there you can see the wind blowing. those are those warm winds forcing the showers through very quickly. the winds have been gusting to more than 30 miles an hour in parts of the area. we've just settled at 28 miles an hour in philadelphia and close to 30 in the pocono mountains. there go the showers. the thunderstorms have died down, but still moderate showers moving through atlantic and into southern burlington and ocean county. those showers will quickly move offshore. and the light rain that's falling in philadelphia and some

of the northern and western suburbs, that's also going to be tapering off. that's the back edge. but there's another line of showers that's going to be moving in for the afternoon and evening commute. and though it doesn't look like much right now, those showers will be firing up this afternoon. check this out. this also doesn't look like much, but that is snow falling in the dakotas, minnesota and wisconsin. and that cold air could bring parts of our area some snow too, but not today. this afternoon there's that next line of showers and thunderstorms that will sweep through the area tonight. showers tomorrow morning across delaware and south jersey could reach into philadelphia. but during the afternoon we'll likely see some breaks in the clouds, get some sunshine as showers taper off by 5:00 in the afternoon. still mild at 5:00 in the afternoon tomorrow, but then the cold air starts sweeping in from the west. look at the futurecast. midnight saturday night into sunday morning that snow falling and sweeping through the area might see an inch or two of accumulation in the pocono

mountains, but the rest of the area it will just be falling from the sky but then out of here. and rain showers for philadelphia. that's what we'll see today. rain showers, a chance of thunderstorms. 70s this afternoon for allentown, quakertown and reading. the seven-day forecast, cooler tomorrow. we'll get those rain showers clearing late in the day. 61 degrees the high on saturday. and then the winds shift and here comes the cold with a chance of some snow showers to the north on sunday morning 48 the high temperature. it will feel like it's in the 30s. a warmer day on monday with a chance of some showers. and then here comes the cold again for tuesday and wednesday. more rainfall due in thursday. all right. good thing it's going to be cold on sunday because happening this weekend some former flyers will lace up their skates again for a good cause. the 12th annual goals for giving game will take place on sunday at the flyers skate zone in northeast philadelphia. here to tell us more is former flyers defenseman brad marsh in our degeneratival operatie dig.

arrested late last night. now, police say that woman appears in surveillance video from the king of prussia mall. police put it out shortly after the family reported the kidnapping. and it generated a lot of tips. investigators moved in on several locations and eventually found the woman and the baby unhurt. we're told she was showing off the baby to her family and friends all while an amber alert had gone out. the baby's real family had been agonizing over letting a stranger who just befriended them minutes before pick up the 7-week-old while at the mall food court. >> i was like hysterical. i was like going through it, you know what i mean, trying to get here, you know what i mean, to be with my daughter, and our family. this is a bad night. this is a hard bad night. and i think this is real hard for somebody to go through. >> reporter: i did speak with the judge here. he is prepared for an arraignment inside this

through the, raced through delaware and south jersey. and there they go. they're settling down. still some lightning bolts offshore. in philadelphia the rain is inching out. we're going to see some breaks of sunshine, but this afternoon even though it's drying out in south philadelphia now, keeping an eye on these showers which are going to come together in the late afternoon hours. futurecast show at 4:00 a few scattered showers, but just in time for the afternoon and evening commute. and just in time for the beginning of the phillies game look at that line of showers moving through. and it will likely delay play at citizens bank park if it stays on that timetable. so phillies versus the orioles. here's the forecast, 6:05 start time showers and possibly thunderstorms, rain coming down but the temperatures will still be up at 75 degrees. look at those winds southwesterly at 19 miles an hour. so that's game time. by 9:00 in the evening it will be drying out. still mostly cloudy skies and still warm though not in the

70s. 68 degrees with winds that will be dying down. they'll be out of the west at 10 miles an hour. and it will be in the clear, dry for the rest of the evening as well. but the weekend, not going to be dry. in fact, we could see some snowflakes along with the rain drops got the seven-day forecast just ahead, vai. thank you, bill. severe weather tore across parts of the deep south overnight bringing heavy rain, hail and several tornadoes. nbc's steve patterson has the latest from mississippi where the cleanup from one tornado has begun. >> reporter: yeah. welcome to columbus, mississippi. really at the epicenter where one of the tornadoes from last night touched down. now you can see the damage on the ground and crews obviously starting to do their job and clean up. meanwhile, debris scattered everywhere, power lines down and trees that have toppled with roots coming up larger than i am. we saw that storm system move east last night through alabama where there was heavy rain, in

this accident. >> reporter: the largest whale watching ship on the west coast, the adventure horn blower, approaches the pier. its horn sounds frantically not slowing down. people on the pier run for cover. an elderly lady just makes it to safety, 150 feet of steel meets brick. seven passengers injured. none of those injuries life threatening. some of the injured holding ice bags, a few needing stretchers to get off the ship. this man from wisconsin was on the walkway. >> came in fast. she kind of skirted the side. it hit the side. and she yelled something. i heard something. and we were just coming in fast and hard. >> reporter: passengers said the crew were yelling, brace yourself, or hold onto something. the adventure horn blower tours around san diego harbor combining sightseeing and whale watching. the 144 people onboard saw more than they bargained for. one passenger said it was

get the recipes at walnuts.org. lawmakers from across the country are meeting in atlanta today for a summit on the zika virus. the cdc is presenting the latest scientific findings on the mosquito born illness including the risk to pregnant women. they'll identify possible gaps in preparation and response. experts will also share strategies for mosquito control. a california man came up with his own way to fight crime, and it's getting some mixed reviews. marty installed surveillance cameras on his property to capture the activity in the park across the street. the cameras captured everything from teens drinking to drug deals to sex. about four years ago he started posting the videos on youtube for his neighborhood watch group. they've called police several times about the activity.

>> i was young too, but i wasn't dumb enough to do my stuff in front of a pole full of cameras. >> even though it's in a public space, it's an invasion of privacy in a way. >> i think he's doing the neighborhood a service. >> marty says no one caught on camera has ever contacted him to take the videos down. and police say as long as the cameras are on his property, not a problem. happening today, astronaut scott kelly is officially hanging up his space suit. kelly is retiring after more than 20 years of service. he recently set the u.s. record for the most time spent in space. kelly returned to earth last month after living at the international space station for almost a year. and u.s. employers had another solid month of hiring in march. the latest jobs report shows they added 215,000 jobs last month. the boost was driven by large gains in the construction, retail and health care industries. the figure suggests employers remain confident in their prospects to add staff. and tens of thousands of people want to drive tesla's

newest electric car. tesla's ceo elan musk says the demand is outpacing expectations for the new model 3. he says more than 115,000 preorders have already been received since yesterday. tesla unveiled the new electric vehicle last night saying it will get at least 215 miles of range on a single charge. and it will seat five adults comfortably. the model 3 will go on sale late next year for a base price of $35,000. well, if you fly american airlines, you'll want to know about a policy change. a company will no longer let customers hold a reservation for 24 hours without paying. instead, customers who buy a ticket will have 24 hours to cancel it without charge. the switch is already in effect for tickets bought over the phone. it will begin later for those who buy tickets online. local ballet dancers will come together for a unique fight

information on our nbc 10 mobile app. ladies, thank you very much for coming in. >> thank you for having us. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 11 minutes before lunchtime, it's been a wet morning and a warm and windy one too. showers are just clearing philadelphia. and the skies are starting to break. we'll see some sunshine, and that's going to help boost temperatures that are already warm. philadelphia international 69 degrees. at the shore we've seen some heavy downpours, but it's tapered off in cape may. the first round of thunderstorms has already moved through and out of the area. the next round, that's due in this afternoon for the evening commute. look closely in allentown and into berks county you can see thin spots in the clouds. we will see some breaks of sunshine, but there are more showers that are going to be lining up for the afternoon commute. those are the storms that have rolled through south jersey. they're now offshore, so some light showers at the jersey shore and into burlington county and the trenton area, but it's

drying out in philadelphia. the winds, they'll be stronger this afternoon. they're already steady breezes this morning gusting to 30 miles an hour at 6:00. but these are southerly winds. look at the arrows, they're all lining up out of the south, so that's a warming direction for us. it's going to be changing over the weekend. the winds will die down tomorrow morning. we'll get a break from the wind, but likely not the clouds. and there's still a chance of some rain showers especially in delaware and south jersey at 9:00 tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon the winds are back once again. those southwesterly winds will be in the low 60s with some sunshine in the late afternoon hours on saturday. but the winds will be shifting late saturday night and into sunday morning. and coming out of the northwest. and this is 6:00 sunday morning. winds of 43 miles an hour in the pocono mountains. 48-mile-an-hour winds and gusts to 50 miles an hour or more in wilmington and into south jersey. and that's going to dump lots of cold air into the area.

plus, these winds strong enough to bring down some tree limbs, possibly trees that could lead to power outages over the weekend. today, showers, windy and warm. 70s this afternoon. won't be all day rainfall but another round of showers to the evening commute. and then the chance of light showers tomorrow morning, most likely in delaware and south jersey, but we could see some of that rain in philadelphia too. winds pick up saturday afternoon. here comes the cold on sunday morning. even a chance of some snow showers in the pocono mountains. 48 the high on sunday. we'll never feel that warm with the wind blowing it will feel like it's in the 30s through the day. and then showers, a chance of them on monday with a warmup but another round of cold and wind for tuesday and especially cold wednesday morning down to 27 degrees. we'll be right back.
