cline-thomas. the mother telling us about the moment her sun was carried away of it can't imagine. >> reporter: my goodness. the question everybody is asking is how could this happen. she thought it would be a good idea to go with her two children, a 2-year-old and a 7 week old. and she met a woman at a jewelry store who she thought she could relate to. the woman said she was also a new mom. hear what happened next. >> you were sitting and talking for a while so -- >> she said at the food court and like i said it was just a mutual conversation. that's all it was. it was just about the kids, like and she was saying how she was depressed and she wanted to get out and it was something i could relate to. my other child was sitting beside me but he was cranky and crying because he was ready to

go. we'd been in the mall all day. he was sleepy. and when he gets emotional i was trying to comfort him and when i turned my back just for a second i didn't even have a chance to wipe the food off his face and my son was gone. >> reporter: there is so much more to this conversation that we're going to bring you, the message she has to you the public, what she learned from this incident. we'll have all of that coming up on "nbc 10 news" at 5 and 6. reporting live, aundrea cline-thomas. >> have to ask you what was it like to hear that mom tell her story that gripped the area for under 24 hours now? >> reporter: it was something more relatable than what you would have thought being out at the mall yesterday because everybody was asking how this could happen. but after she tells the story she was being a prudent mom trying to tend to her boy you could see that it could happen

to anyone. >> thanks so much. we appreciate it. now we turn to the suspect, 32-year-old cherry amoore who wore a red hooded sweatshirt to face kidnapping charges. police say she went to the king of prussia mall where she met the family she would later terrorize. according to investigators the suspect snatched the baby in the food court and left by the bone fish grill. she drove home to her acht where police would later find her and the child. nbc 10's deanna durante joins us now with more on that suspect and how she got close to her alleged victim. deanna. >> reporter: well, amoore told police according to court papers she did not go to the mall to steal a baby. when she walked into the courtroom here she glanced over, saw her mother and relatives and began to sob and said i'm sorry. >> she says nothing to dozens of

reporters and shows little emotion as she is shackled and chained but police say cherry amoore told them plenty. when they discovered the 7 week old in her apartment. >> she has told our investigators that she did not go to the mall with the intention to steal a baby. she also told investigators that she gave birth to a baby boy on february 11th which died a few hours later. we have not been able to confirm any of that story. >> a public defender answered questions outside of court on her behalf. >> she had on line a baby registry for december. was she pregnant? >> can't answer that right now. >> we found two separate baby registries on line with amoore's name and a december due date. those appear to be for a baby boy. police began searching, a woman and her family shopping, say they were befriended by a woman they didn't know, who went with them to the food court, police say amoore was that woman who

wanted to hold the baby. at first that request was refused by the mom, but then amoore was allowed to try to calm the child. when the mother began tending to another child amoore grabbed the baby and took off from the mall. video was released of amoore leaving. once on the air and on line tips came in leading them to amoore and the baby nearly six hours after the abduction. police do say that this is an active investigation, when we asked about that pregnancy claim they say they are investigating all parts of this case but they don't want people to lose sight of the fact that the mall security, the video, it got out quickly, tips came in and the baby is back home safe with his mother. reporting live in king of prussia, deanna durante, "nbc 10 news." >> cherie amoore's mother is well known to many in the area, renee amoore is the deputy chair of the republican party in pennsylvania. >> and in fact, nbc 10 has interviewed renee amoore many

times in the past. she was in the courtroom to support her daughter. >> brandon hudson has more on that part of the story. >> reporter: rosemary and jim, what makes this case even more interesting is that the suspect is from a well-connected well known family in philadelphia politics. we waited outside this court to talk to the suspect's mom but this time she did not want to see our nbc 10 camera. >> before police brought amoore in for a court hearing we tried talking to her mom renee about kidnapping charges against her daughter. renee didn't say anything but the family pastor did. >> just support her and keep her in prayer and also to keep the other family in prayer. >> the amoore's pastor said his heart goes out to the baby's family. >> we're keeping everything in prayer. >> the pastor and renee would not answer questions about shery's past. we know her mom made tens of thousands in contributions to

not raining yet here in philadelphia as we take a live look at the schuylkill expressway sun still out but it could start soon during the peak of the evening rush. we're looking to some dramatic changes for the weekend. >> nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen is watching it all. >> we have showers approaching the lehigh valley, some of them in the poconos, then another area in maryland that we're watching that will be moving up in about a couple hours or so. here is a look at the radar most of us are dry and warm and sunny. so you never know there was actually rain heading our way. poconos, though, seeing heavy rain around chestnut hill, jim thorp getting out of that rain but it's moving across 476 here, some lighter showers in upper parts of lehigh county. looking at parts of berks and lancaster county around 76 here also up through parts of berks county, right near maiden creek in that area, mannheim as well light to moderate rain showers. the lightning farther to the

south in maryland, so i circled this area for you because it's going to be moving into our are very soon. that's a spot i think will be moving up the i-95 corridor eventually, as we get closer to the evening commute. the later part of the evening commute. so here's the motion, mostly west to east, if we track this whole broken up line it will be moving into the allentown area by about 4:15 so in about 10 minutes wilmington by 5:26, philadelphia 5:30. so it's moving fairly quickly. we still have a little time until it gets close to the major interstates. temperatures have really jumped up, near 80 in philadelphia and northeast philly and reading. these temperatures will be helping to keep these storms alive as they move in. so kind of adding fuel to that, that's why we expect the line to move through and off into new jersey and delaware. for this evening we do have showers and storms in the forecast going into your weekend. some big changes on the way. it's going to be colder and we're watching even more rain

the antique automobile museum in hershey. there kasich ramped up criticism of the other candidates taking swipes at cruz. >> problem with senator cruz he has no record. his record is shutting down the government and making everybody he works with upset. maybe he ought to talk about what he's going forward. what he has been for in the past hasn't worked. >> kasich by the way is no stranger to pennsylvania. he was born in the pittsburgh area, he campaigned in villanova the day after winning the ohio primary. today cruz also spoke at that same leadership council. this was his first campaign appearance in pennsylvania. the state's primary is april 26. next week democratic candidate hillary clinton will campaign in pennsylvania, planning events in philadelphia and pittsburgh on wednesday, but has not given more details. the former secretary of state rallied this afternoon in syracuse, new york. the next big contest, wisconsin's primary for both parties on tuesday, and it could

be a turning point for the republicans after a tough week for donald trump. we'll have to see what happens. for complete decision 2016 coverage including the latest delegate counts and upcoming primaries and caucuses, tap the nbc 10 app. a different kind of road rage of sorts, a burlington county man accused of slitting his wife's throat while she was driving. he is now behind bars, the crash happened last night in delran. when police got to the scene they discovered a knife in the car and the victim on the ground with cuts on her neck. cynthia later died. he was found at a diner wearing only underwear and sneakers, and was also covered in blood. >> sky force 10 over a deadly crash in montgomery county early this morning. one person died here when these two cars collided at walsh and 40 foot road. investigators trying to figure out what caused the crash. >> a manufacturing plant in berks county will be moving out

of the area and taking more than 300 jobs with it. the teleflex plant in berks county plans to suspend operations by the end of 2018. the company is based in wayne and makes medical products. more than 100 jobs will be moved to mexico and the czech republic. other jobs go to north carolina, some will stay in wayne. >> word on a detour you'll want to know about starting tonight. penndot is closing a bridge in northwest philadelphia for five months. the walnut lane bridge in blue bell park closes to traffic at 7:00 this evening. crews will be replacing the concrete deck and sidewalks. it's expected to reopen in early september. while it's closed traffic will detour over wissahickon avenue and henry avenue, septa's bus route 65 will begin its detour at 6:00 tonight. >> we're learning more about the gunman accused of killing a state trooper at the richmond, virginia bus station yesterday.

police identified the shooter now as 34-year-old james brown iii, he had a lengthy criminal record in illinois. we brought you this story yesterday as breaking news. when police say brown shot trooper chad dermyer. the station has reopened and police are still trying to figure out the motive. dermyer was just 37. >> a police strike over security concerns is keeping brussels airport closed, that closed last week because of the terror attacks there. airport police walked out calling security atted after the bombings inadequate. the airport made repairs and planned to partly reopen tonight. suicide bombers targeted the airport and the subway station killing more than 30 people and injuring dozens of others. the subway station is still closed. >> family members said final good-bye to the two dutch siblings killed in the attacks. funerals for the two were held

in the netherlands, the brother and sister lived in new york and were headed back to the u.s. when the suicide bombers blew up a section of the airport. a beach replenishment effort will continue after crews abandoned the project last winter for other jobs. three dredges will return to long beach island next week, work will begin in beach haven and trech to the whole gate section. the phillies are coming home from clearwater for their final spring training game. >> yes, teams back in south philadelphia for the final spring training game against the orioles, taking a live look at citizens banks park. the philles starting the season this monday on the road and nbc 10 is counting down the days until the home opener. it is april 11. and nbc 10 has you covered for all of the action against the padres. pregame show starts at 2:00 followed by the first pitch at 3:00 p.m. all here on nbc 10. >> right now it looks pretty

wind gusts, that's pulling up the warm air and the warm air is actually going to create fuel for any showers and storms that move in to just keep them alive. right now we have a line back off to the west. most of the area on the dry side unless you're in the lehigh valley. parts of berks county, lancaster county seeing rain. the rest of us sunny, also warm, some clouds in new jersey and delaware but this rain is actually moving from west to east so moving through the rest of the area soon. poconos seeing heavy rain around chestnut hill across 80 and across most of monroe county. now we're looking through the lehigh valley here. -is north white haul township, lehigh, 476, this is one heavy shower not seeing much in the way of lightning but i wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing lightning developing in this heading toward allentown and that will continue moving into northampton county now we're looking through berks county, maiden creek a heavy shower moving through, moving into reading soon. and across 176, but another area

of thunderstorms that we're watching, that's right around maryland, so this area is in fact moving into our area. or will be very soon. newark expect it by 5:50. wilmington after 6:00, philadelphia, closer to 6:30. and a lot of the models are agreeing on that. closer to 6:00 p.m., showers and storms closer to the philadelphia area, northern delaware across i-95, by 7:00 p.m. those moving into new jersey, then we start to see things clear up a bit as we go into tonight. but then by tomorrow we'll see rain coming back into the forecast for your saturday morning. tonight, though, early showers and thunderstorms, temperatures in about the mid to low 50s. then we clear out later tonight, rain comes back early tomorrow, so we have showers to start off your saturday. also high winds developing tomorrow, later in the day and sunday morning. gusting near 50 to 60 miles an hour. we have a high wind watch across the area because of that. so it is going to be very windy as we go later into the day

wow. people on the san diego dock ran for cover when a boat hit the pier. investigators blame a mechanical malfunction. 144 people were on board, 7 were hurt and the bow of the vessel was also -- look at that, badly damaged. >> two children are lucky to be alive after a bullet ripped through a wall inches from them at a grocery store in illinois. it ended up hitting the ankle of a person bagging groceries

standing behind the kids. police say the gun belonged to a store employee who laid it down and removed the clip. another employee picked it up and it went off. the two workers are facing charges. >> if you are planning a trip to mt. rushmore soon you may want to make sure it's your actual destination. >> i would need help getting there. people had trouble when plugging it into their gps. they ended up at this methodist camp sight and retreat. the storm mountain center is about 12 miles off course. the center even put up a sign that reads your gps is wrong, this is not mt. rushmore. so, good luck getting there. as the nbc 10 investigators have been showing us, thousands of family in the area are living with lead and may not even know it. >> so today the investigators are helping parents get a step ahead. next, the four ways you can minimize lead poisoning in your

nbc 10 is monitoring new developments in an arrest made after a baby was kidnapped from the king of prussia mall last night. in the past half hour, nbc 10 received this mug shot of cherie amoore accused of taking the 7 week old from his stroller and simply walking away. she is in the montgomery county prison on $500,000 cash bail. according to investigators amoore admits she took the child. the criminal complaint says

amoore described the kidnapping as an out of body experience. a plot of people have questions how a kidnapper can get close enough to take a baby from a mall. >> lauren mayk talked to some security experts today to try to get answers. lauren, sketch it out for us. >> we want to walk you through the point of interaction between this suspect and the mother that led to this kidnapping. look at what's behind me here. this is a map of the king of prussia mall, you probably have been there before. this is the lower level of the plaza. let me show you this right here. now, the mother told police she met the suspect here at the pandora store. at some point police say the suspect and the mother and her children, they walked over here to the food court. that's this large area here. and that police say that is when the suspect picked up the baby and then went upstairs here, up to that next level, and out near an exit near the bone fish grill

where we actually see this happening. take a look here. you've seen this video here before. this is where the suspect walked out here with the baby in that orange t-shirt and that is something that you have all been sharing to help make an arrest. now, we were at the mall today, there were a lot of people there on a friday. it is clear there are a lot of security cameras there. we noticed them in the food court, in the plaza. we reached out to the mall to talk about how their security system worked to help track down this suspect. they didn't want to talk about it on camera but they did tell me that their emergency procedures were operationalized instantly in this incident. a couple of security experts and a former police officer about what you see and what you don't see when you go to a mall. >> probably would be surprised at how many cameras there are in a mall. and the banks of camera and the people looking at them.

>> we watched this surveillance video with that security expert today. and coming up at 5:30 we'll get his take on what he saw and he also has a lesson for parents. what your child should always be wearing. i'm lauren mayk, "nbc 10 news." >> we'll never forget that orange t-shirt on baby asir. he was reported missing. >> many did not receive an amber alert until several hours later. here is video of the amber alert when it went out. this was shot by an executive producer here at nbc 10. it's hard to see but the time on the phone shows 9:38 p.m., nearly four hours after the abduction was reported. the chief was asked why it took so long for the public to receive the alert. >> the amber alert that went out through the police department went out to all surrounding jurisdictions in montgomery county, in the first few minutes.

if we look south around maryland, this area, this one has lightning in so it this is a pretty big cluster of thunderstorms moving in from maryland heading in the direction of the philadelphia area and the major interstates, so there you see the motion from west to east. i don't think that is going to be dying down because our temperatures are just so warm outside. we're near 80 degrees in spots even in philadelphia. so with the motion of this particular cluster of storms, newark would be seeing it by 5:48. philadelphia 6:20, cherry hill 6:30. we expect that to hold together and move through. that is one thing we'll be tracking agency we go through the afternoon and into the evenings. but the storms are not going to last all night. as you saw it's not widespread. 80 degrees almost in philadelphia and northeast philly, 77 in wilmington, 77 in pottstown so it is very warm out even 70 degrees in wildwood. we go through tonight, once the rain leaves it's going to stay mild and we have more rain heading our way as we go into

your saturday morning and some very windy conditions setting up for part of the weekend toxt we'll look at that forecast coming up. tens of thousands of kids in our region are poisoned with lead but it's 100% preventible. >> so today, we are empowering parents as mitch blacher shows you how to protect your kids as he continues our week-long investigation, living with lead. >> reporter: rick has been finding lead for more than a decade with the philadelphia health department. >> this is something you want to make sure that is clean. >> reporter: he says there are four ways you can prevent lead poisoning. first, learn the facts. lead is most dangerous for kids under 6 and for pregnant women. second, know where to find the lead. >> clean as often as possible if not daily a couple times a week. >> reporter: most kids are poisoned in their home. >> window sills are especially important when you have little kids. >> reporter: he points to what he calls friction surfaces such

as windows and doors. third, he says diet matters. >> kids with a poor diet can be affected more. >> reporter: foods with calcium, iron and vitamin c help keep lead out of the body. >> as this door closes and rubs against the door jamb it is creating lead dust even though we're not seeing it. kids spend most of their time on the floor. >> reporter: get your kids tested. your pediatrician can do a simple blood test, the only way to know if your child has lead poisoning because most kids don't look or act sick. the symptoms show up as learning or social problems. for french, education is his best tool to solve the lead crisis. >> what is the number one thing that parents should know how to protect their kids from lead poisoning? >> it's 100% preventible. >> reporter: if you wonder if you have lead in the home think about when it was built or remodded. if it's before 1978 you are likely living with lead and you

>> >> with mosquito season practically here experts gathered at the centers for disease control in atlanta for a zika summit worried about the potential for the virus to spread in many parts of the country. the big concern for pregnant women. there is growing evidence that zika can cross the placenta invading the brain of the developing fetus causing severe birth defects. >> we wait until we see widespread transmission in the united states, if we wait until the public is panicking, because they are seeing babies bofrn with birth defects or across the country, we have waited too long. >> state and local health officials are working to develop the zika game plans now. this week the cdc said mosquitoes that carry the virus have spread more than they thought. this map shows the line. the new area includes all of delaware, and new jersey and most of our pennsylvania viewing area. >> hundreds of folks will hit

the streets in philadelphia this weekend to help people with blood cancers and for one patient the event is personal. it's called the be the match walk and run and kicks off at the navy yard tomorrow morning. here is a live look at the navy yard. walkers raise money for research and for people who need life saving bone marrow transplants. new volunteers will be invited to join the donor registry with a swab of their cheek. well, into the week we had rain for parts of the area. now we're seeing sunshine and temperatures are jumping near 80 degrees in some spots, so with a look like this outside across center city, you never know we actually have storms coming. some storms this evening for part of the area, that's going to stay in the forecast, so as we go through the next couple hours i think you'll see the skyline view changing quite a bit. going into tomorrow to start the weekend we'll have rain coming back into the forecast, and it's

going to get windy on top of that later saturday and very early sunday. we're talking about a high wind watch. so i'll show you that in a second. right now we're near 80 in allentown, 76 westchester near 80, bensalem and philadelphia, 77 wilmington, 75 millville, 77 in dover and most of the area is still dry. we've seen some rain through the lehigh valley and we're watching thunderstorms around maryland that are quickly approaching parts of lancaster county and those will continue to move toward the philadelphia area. we'll start in the lehigh valley around the allentown area across 476 here, these are mostly moving from west to east so these showers which are fairly heavy these will be continuing to move to the east and i think northampton county will see some of that heavier rain. the lightning though, that has been confined to parts of maryland but approaching lancaster county. so lancaster seeing heavy rain and i think this is the area we're going to see hold together and develop more as it moves toward the i-95 corridor. we track this one it will be

moving by 5:51, philadelphia, 6:16 and camden by 6:23. we still have a ways to go before the cluster gets into the philadelphia area. but we'll be watching over the next couple hours here. future weather here showing the rain continuing across philadelphia and through parts of delaware. by about 5:00. or moving in i should say. but then continuing as we get closer to 6:00, there you see the rain and then moving into new jersey by about 8, 9:00, clearing out later tonight. then the rain comes back to start your week so look what happens saturday morning. light showers moving into new jersey and delaware. could be moving into the philadelphia area. that continues as we go into the middle of the day saturday. then we start to clear out more as we go into saturday afternoon and saturday night. at that time we would have a high wind watch across the area which could become a warning. at this point a high wind watch late saturday into early sunday, winds could be gusting as high as 50 to 60 miles an hour, those are damaging winds so it's going

to get very windy across the middle of the weekend. tonight early showers, a chance of thunderstorms, too, mild temperatures in about the mid to low 50s. tomorrow we'll see the morning showers with the higher winds developing later in the day. that's going to last into early sunday. look at the temperature on sunday, only in the upper 40s, a chance of a wintry mix by tuesday morning. >> speaking of the weekend, villanova fans gearing up for a big one. >> people are planning their final four watch parties now. some students are going to step further. a lot of steps in fact. next, the journey many wildcats are taking to see their team march to victory.

early access to and then the rest were lotteried out. they sold out quicker than anybody could imagine. >> now the focus is on oklahoma, a tough loss during the regular season. >> it wasn't a good game in december but i think we improved a lot. >> obviousry we know oklahoma is a really good team. i know everyone here feels confident. >> i can't tell you how excited i am. we won the last game i was on vacation and we were in mexico and we found like happened to find some nova fans there running around the hotel screaming. people were crying. it was amazing. >> to be there in person this weekend will be unforgettable. they are leaving campus with great expectations. >> well, i don't want to get my hopes up but yes, i'm hoping to come back tuesday with a smile on my face. >> don't miss our special later tonight, villanova, march to victory. keith jones and john clark will host that live from houston.

and police still have a lot of unanswered questions. tonight, we learned the suspect is cherie amoore. nbc 10 was outside the courtroom as she arrived to face kidnapping charges, now sitting in jail on a $500,000 bond. amoore told police she lost a baby earlier this year and when she saw the victim's child she only wanted to hold her son again. police still trying to confirm if that story is true. for the mother of the kidnapped child this all started as what seemed to be a routine encounter with another mother. >> before she knew it her baby was gone. she described the terrifying moments to aundrea cline-thomas. she joins us with more. >> reporter: today malika hunter tells me she is grateful for the support because she knows this could have turned out much worse. >> i'm so glad he is in my arms. i didn't know what the outcome of that situation was going to
