there's an explosion, a loud bang. >> we were sleeping and we woke up to a big boom. and smoke. >> passengers in shock, following a deadly derailment. just minutes after leaving philadelphia, an amtrak train hit a piece of equipment on the tracks, killing workers and derailing the lead engine of the train. tonight, nbc 10 tries to uncover why this happened. thanks for joining us, i'm denise nakano. two amtrak work remembers dead, 35 passengers were injured. the accident happened around 8:00 this morning in trainer, delaware county near chester. the train was headed from new york to savannah, georgia, when it hit the equipment. tonight, investigators are on the scene working to determine what went wrong. amtrak train service remains limited at this hour. we have team coverage of the deadly derailment. we begin with nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal who is live in

trainer. the ntsb just gave an update on the derailment what have you learned? >> investigators say it is still very early, but they have recovered some crucial pieces of evidence. there's a large command scene here behind me, including amtrak police, and federal officials, including new york senator chuck schumer have identified the deceased as two long-time amtrak employees. the front winnows of amtrak train 89 are cracked and broken and the lead engine off the track after firm says it collided with a backhoe doing maintenance work. the impact shaking neighbors headed to sunday church. officials say two workers were killed, the backhoe operator and a supervisor, both amtrak employees with decades of experience. >> we would like to offer our condolences to the familiaies o the deceased.

we have recovered the forward-facing video and the rear-facing video from the locomotive. >> passengers felt a jolt and saw smoke and fire. 35 people on board were injured. railway safety experts say maintenance crews working near a live track must always alert dispatchers to warn of oncoming trains. >> they have to notify the dispatcher and they have to get permission to get on track. so there's a very formal procedure to get permission to get on a piece of track. and obviously some, somebody didn't follow the rules. >> congressman bob brady dealing with the second derailment in his district over past year, saying something clearly went wrong. >> it had to be some kind of communication failure. any time there's a problem, an accident it shows room for concern. >> investigators will be on scene here into the night. were very tight-lipped at the news conference just a few minutes ago.

we asked whether any warning was given, they said right now it's too early in the investigation and at this point we don't know which track those maintenance crews were working on, live in trainer, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. and the chaos for the more than 300 passengers lasted for hours. from the moment they felt the first jolt, to a walk through the woods and into a nearby church to get help from first responders. nbc 10's drew smith spoke with several passengers. he continues our team coverage live outside the trainer united methodist church. drew? >> denise, good evening this place of worship turned from a house of worship to a large-scale emergency triage center. passengers, some injured, cold and shaken up, found a way out of the danger zone here and they spoke to us about what they went through. >> there's an explosion, a loud bang. >> passengers were settled in after amtrak train 89 stopped in philadelphia. but then minutes later -- they felt it. >> we were sleeping and we just

woke up to a big boom and. >> it felt like an earthquake. >> in panic, some people tried to run off the train. >> the girl next to me was hysterical, i had to calm her down. >> a fire and windows bursted out. >> conductors told everyone to stay put. the tracks were still live. once it was safe, the evacuation began. >> we had to go across a ditch in the cold, windy weather and then luckily thankfully, there was a church nearby. >> ambulance after ambulance moved in to help the injured. then the septa buses arrived to pick up the passengers and take them to the 30th street station where another makeshift medical station helped the people who didn't go to a hospital. >> the train jerked forward and back and i banged my knee and now there's a bruise and now there's a knot on it. >> and because this was an emergency situation, the passengers had to rush off the train. many leaving their luggage behind. we saw an amtrak worker loading

a couple of trucks back here up with those bags. those passengers had to head back to philadelphia. many of them don't know how they'll reach their final destination but many of them telling us they're happy to be safe tonight. live in trainer, drew smith, nbc 10 news. the derailment is causing a ripple effect for rail travel in the area. amtrak restored limited service between wilmington and fill l.a. meantime, septa says it's honoring all amtrak tickets and passes, on the payoli, thorndale and trenton line and amtrak says it will do the same for its new york and trenton line. septa's wilmington/newark line remains suspended tonight. comes a year after the deadly amtrak derailment in the port richmond neighborhood of fill l.a. eight people died and more than 200 were hurt when the train left the tracks on may 12th. in that case, the train was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour, as it hit a sharp curve in the tracks.

since then, amtrak completed installation of the automatic train control system on that particular stretch of track. that system can automatically slow down a train, if it's going too fast. count on nbc 10 on air and online for your complete coverage of the deadly derailment. we'll continue to bring you updates on the investigation and let you know when train service is back to normal. severe weather last night crumbled this building on warington avenue in kingssesing. a official at the city's license office says the building was unoccupied, one person driving by was hit by debris and is expected to be okay. and a similar scene in mayfair, a massive tree and powerpole snapped like twigs, thankfully no one was in the car when the tree came crashing down. and strong winds picked up and tossed a trailer this

morning. this happened on the hammond farm and dennisville, cape may county. several other structures on the property were also damaged. let's go to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist karen thomas. karen, we've had quite the roller coaster ride with this weather. are there any signs of it letting up? >> a great question, denise, a lot of folks are saying okay, enough with the wind we knew it was going to be an active weather pattern for sure. the good news is that those strong wind gusts of about 52 miles per hour, 59 miles per hour officially clocked down in cape may county will be subsiding as we get closer to dusk, about 7:30 this evening. we should say good-bye to the very strong wind gusts. right now 26 miles per hour in philadelphia. so we're seeing a decrease already. temperatures, cold temperatures, that's the next part of the story. and we can see in the area right now. cold spot, poconos, 31 degrees, 46 in philadelphia. and guess what those temperatures are going to take a tumble overnight tonight.

i'll be back with more. denise? >> thank you, karen. turning now to villanova's march to victory. we're just over 24 hours away from the ncaa championship game. where the wildcats take on the north carolina tar heels in houston. tip-off is set for 9:19. nova nation erupted in celebration after villanova crushed oklahoma by a record 44 points in the final four. tomorrow night the celebration could get even bigger, nbc 10's brandon hudson is line on campus with a look at how villanova is preparing for the championship game. >> the villanova campus is probably the quietest it's been all week. a stark contrast to how we saw it last night after the wildc s wildcats' final four win over oklahoma. we'll standing outside the pavilion where the students will be invited to watch the national championship game. tomorrow will be busy at villanova for the campus staff and the public safety

department. a university spokesman told me they've been in contact with radner police so make sure students and fans will be safe. you can expect to see officers from villanova and radner on and around campus tomorrow night. nbc 10 learned that some of the celebrations got a bit out of hand as police arrested eight people last night. radner police say two people assaulted a police horse and four were take noon custody for disorderly conduct. we returned to campus today and met a group of students who told us police kept the post-game celebrations under control. >> they respected that we're out here, just looking to have a good time and celebrate our win and our victory. and they kept it under control i don't think anything was too dangerous or out of hand. >> so many people, so many different people. people came from off-campus, i saw people that definitely were not students, maybe former students of villanova. 4-year-olds, 3-year-olds, everyone was having a good time. >> now students will be able to watch the game tomorrow at the
