everything that we're about, passionate, work hard, we're gritty, we're tough. we have a lot of will. you think of all of those traits that's ed snider. philadelphia honors one of its figures, ed may be best known for founding the philadelphia flyers but his impact on business and the community cannot be ignored. snider after a two-year fight with bladder cancer. he moved to philadelphia in 1964. by the age of 33 he mortgaged his home to create the flyers but his vision would not stop there. in the early 1990s he worked with the city and the business community to build what is known today as the wells fargo center. lauren mayk is joining us with a closer look how snider shaped

>> ed snider best known as a flyer up to the very end. you may have noticed before saturday's name lauren hart was face timing as she sang god bless america so he could hear the song. today everyone talked about his passion for winning. the general manager remembered watching a game with the team's owner earlier this year. the flyers were losing 3-0 and came back to win. listen. >> at the time he wasn't doing great, he was in a lot of pain. he got up, he was high fiving. the fourth goal he got out of his seat. that's -- something i'll never forget. pretty cool. >> and we'll hear more from the flye flyers players coming up. ed was also a business, he created the flyer's charities, the group signature event the

wives carnival. it raised $28 million since 1977. his charitable impact can be seen in the youth hockey foundation that gives children the opportunity to learn life lessons and play hockey. brandon hudson looks at how the program helped children from across our region. >> reporter: behind me is ed snider's legacy in action. we found out this organization does more than teach hockey. it's taught life lessons to thousands of people in this community. >> i believe this picture was taken at our annual golf tournament last year. >> scott showed us photos of ed in his office, a glimpse at the impact snider made. >> his legacy will live on in each of the kids that comes through the foundation.

tonight lawmakers, doctors and women all weighing in about a controversial bill that would limit abortions in pennsylvania and it's led to passionate arguments on both sides. cydney long is joining us with a closer look at the debate and the potential impact of this bill. cydney. >> reporter: good evening. should house bill 1948 pass and become law planned parenthood says it would be the most restrictive abortion law in america. anti anti-abortion supporters say it would prevent the barbaric nature of late-term abortions. >> we were shocked to learn that our son never developed an

northern bucks county and upper montgomery county, they are racing into new jersey. the main area we're watching is way out to the west. it's in ohio and down toward kentucky. and that is what's going to be coming in as we head to the late night hours and tomorrow. it's going to be a very warm night with a southerly wind, temperatures staying above 60 degrees. but by the morning rush areas of rain, some could be on the heavier side. maybe even a thunderstorm. then temperatures drop down into the 50s, setting us up for some decent weather for the phillies tomorrow night. we'll get into that in detail a little later. we're clouding up with a chance of rain after midnight as the second system comes in. 56 degrees in philadelphia for the low, 50 north and west. pretty windy this evening. the winds diminishing but shifting into the northwest. so we have those temperatures in the 60s early with the rain, then the sun comes out in the

for the team. >> that's exactly right. saturday it was the captain who made sure that snider was a big part of the team celebration in the locker room. skbr mr. snider, got the whole team here, a big win. we missed you in this room. we're playing for you. >> how often is that. the team was struggling back in december but that's when they met with snider at his home and took this final team picture with him. they went 26-12-7 after that, a push that has been and will continue to be inspired by snider. >> he's a philadelphia flyers. he started the whole thing and he will always be the guy that kind of brought that to the city and he's a really good man. pretty glad we were able to make the playoffs for him. the whole year we were playing for him and that's not going to change for the playoffs. >> though we'll be playing with

just as competitive at tennis. if they were keeping score he was so competitive. he would see during games when he was there, in his owner's box, it was tough to sit around him people would say because during the play he was so into the game. we were talking to the phillies chairman dave montgomery here. he had ed snider to a few phillies games but he said a couple times ed would invite him to hockey games but he didn't want to sit with ed because you really couldn't talk to ed during the game. he was that into it and fired up. ed snider was the ultimate competitor. and in my eyes the most important sports figure here in philadelphia over the last 50 years, brought hockey to our town, built the spectrum, comcast sportsnet, wip, many other things. he is up there in our city's history with importance as far as sports figures. >> talk to us more, john, about personal interactions and what those interactions with snider

taught you about his personality when it comes to sports, business, the community, how did he make all this work? how did he galvanize the community to get his vision seen in philadelphia? >> passion, energy, and being genuine. you know, we don't think of ed snider being from somewhere else. he is from washington, d.c. but he came here and he wanted to start a hockey team so bad he mortgaged his home. and in everybody that he dealt with, he looked you right in the eye, he was very direct, he was always very honest. he gave you honest, direct answers, he was very genuine in everything he did. he had a passion, a passion to get things done. that goes towards his youth hockey foundation, in his later years, early '70s, he wanted to build a legacy and he said his legacy is the youth hockey foundation and he went full bore into that, donated $6 million of his own money.

opened up rinks all over so inner city kids could be introduced to the sport he loved. with anything he did in his life, he did it full competitiveness and i'll tell you, he was a special man. he really defined this city and he was like a fan owning the flyers. that was his beloved team. when he was in the owner's suite or after games he was like all of the fans watching the team play. >> such a great legacy, he has left, john. thank you. appreciate it. ed snider as you probably know now was fighting bladder cancer for the last couple years. today we spoke with a doctor of mercy fitzgerald hospital about this disease. he said there are often no symptoms but there are some things you should look out for. >> you could have pain, you could have problems urinating, and you can have discomfort, irritation of the pelvis. but it's bleeding that is the first sign. >> the doctor tells us that

noticed 56-year-old brian ayers watching them when they were inside the wawa last wednesday. the girls say they were later walking about a mile away when ayers pulled up next to them and offered them a ride home. the girls ran off. welcome home phillies. today's home opener a day filled with excitement and hope tcht players paraded into the stadium through center field. of course the phillies didn't win but fans we spoke with say better days are ahead. after a dreary morning the weather even cooperated and blanketed the stadium in sunshine. and a touching moment to begin the game. philadelphia police officer jesse hartnett threw out the game's ceremonial first pitch. he was wounded in the line of duty back in january. watch this. after the pitch hartnett down on one knee proposing to his fiancee. and she said yes.

judge ruled the state can seize oceanfront land for a protective dune program in margate. it sued to block the dunes arguing the bulk shed enough to protect it from storms, this is the second major ruling in favor of the state environmental protection department two weeks ago a judge in toms river ruled in favor of the state's seizure of land in northern ocean county for the project. a push to protect local residents from drinking water. two congressmen are calling on the epa to impose tougher regulations on drinking water. they made their appeal at willow grove. they say hi levels of compounds have been found in water in and around that base. >> residents are understandably concerned that these chemicals are to blame for their health conditions. >> the congressman sent a letter to the epa and they have also asked the navy for a timeline of

when the contamination was discovered. the weekend sure had a winter feel to it. but today feeling like spring. we had rain this morning, we're going to have more tomorrow morning. especially during the rush hour. the rest of the week is going to be on the cool side. not as cold as the weekend but cooler than average. we do have a dry stretch coming once we get rid of that rain tomorrow morning. beautiful sunset out there, the clouds starting to increase from the west. 67 degrees, look at the wind here. 17 gusting to 26 miles an hour. and it's 17 degrees warmer than it was at this time yesterday. saturday we only got to 43, sunday, 50. today though, 69 degrees. then it starts to go down. by tuesday, 62, and that may just be in the morning.

50s in the afternoon. then wednesday, 58. the rest of the week pretty close to that. slightly below average. the temperatures right now are generally in the 60s. we have some upper 50s in pottstown, allentown, reading and at the shore. atlantic city and wildwood with the strong southerly wind coming in off of that 48 degree ocean, that doesn't add up to a warm wind flow. you can see it coming straight out of the south-southwest, and it's dead calm in reading and in pottstown but it's really windy elsewhere in the area. look at these gusts. currently gusting to 31 miles an hour in dover. and that, of course, is bringing up the warm air. that's going to stay with us all night. you can see a couple little showers right in extreme northern bucks county. that is moving out. we have dry weather for several hours and then we wait for this next area. that's a pretty solid area of rain. a little bit heavier patches from time to time, and that will

be coming in. during the morning rush not going to need winter coat, i can tell you that. look at these temperatures with the southerly winds staying in the 60s. 60 degrees at 6:00 a.m. even close to that in allentown and reading. but some patches of heavy rain, maybe even a brief thunderstorm, as that goes through, the temperature starts dropping. but the sun may start to come out in the afternoon. and then by tomorrow late in the day it's sunny. sets us up for nice weather for the eagles -- the phillies, sorry, wearing phillies bow tie by the way, for opening day. and then it gets kind of cool over the next couple of days. the phillies for tuesday night, the wind is going to be different than today when it was blowing out. going to be blowing from left field to the right field corner. and temperatures will be in the 50s as we go through the

evening. so it's not going to be as warm as it was for today's game. the rest of the night tonight, clouding up, chance of rain, after midnight and of course during the morning rush, may be wet in the morning but it's going to be dry in the afternoon. the early day high in the low 60s. in the seven-day forecast, temperatures a little bit below average the rest of the week. nothing close to that 69 we saw today. but it looks dry. starting on wednesday all the way into the weekend and look at the 70-plus, sunday and even higher on monday. >> danny pommells with you. david montgomery lends perspective on ed snider's long lasting impact. that's next in sports.
