are now moving through. and sunshine is about to take over. so this will not last. it will move out. and then we'll see temperatures recover. they've cooled down with the steady rain in doylestown and pottstown, now 56 at philadelphia international, and it's low 50s for roxborough, south philadelphia, northeast philadelphia at the airport. dreary now, rain is falling now. 1:00 this afternoon parts of the area will still see some showers, especially in delaware and south jersey. but as the afternoon goes on, we'll see fewer and fewer clouds with some sunshine we'll warm up to 60 degrees. and then it starts to cool down this evening at 7:00, 56. and it's going to get colder overnight tonight. a look at the seven-day forecast when i'm back later this half hour, vai. thank you, bill. jessica boyington, let's check in with her. windshield wipers on, headlights got to come on, right, jessica? >> that was the next thing i was going to say, vai. definitely in this weather and the rainy conditions you want to have your windshield wipers on and your headlights on, and extra patience and give yourself extra time before you head out

the door. especially if you're on 95. this is around broad street right now. southbound approaching an accident that's why you're seeing this big delay northbound by the scene doing just a bit better. again, that accident scene is right around broad street. you'll see at least a ten-minute delay there. also an accident scene on lower merion on ballot avenue and union avenue. some construction as well on passyunk avenue between 31st and 28th. that's reduced to two lanes. you'll see volume and backup there. the 42 freeway looks okay. we had a lot of volume earlier, a lot has cleared out of the way. creek road headed toward the philadelphia area, no problems except for that rain. and watch for the on and off ramps when getting on and off the majors. no huge delays at the philadelphia international airport, but there are some reports of some cancellations, so check before you go, vai. thank you, jessica. new this morning a new jersey teacher's accused of sex crimes involving a student.

edmond harman, prosecutors say the vikt immaterictim went to s, he's accused of following the girl and taking naked photos. police are seeing if there are any other possible victims. new pictures this morning of suspected shoplifters who attacked a worker this happened in a store in center city. the worker was stabbed after she confronted two suspected shoplifters. the employee was hospitalized. the women got away. and a similar case happened in a strawberry mansion supermarket. a worker there confronted the suspect and the man pulled a box cutter. the employee was not hurt. if you happen to recognize any of the people in these videos, philadelphia police would like to hear from you. and today it becomes official, philadelphia's getting a new fire commissioner. today mayor jim kenney will announce adam thiel will take over the city's fire department.

he was the deputy secretary of homeland safety and security, prior to that served as the fire chief for alexandria, virginia. nbc 10's pamela osborn has been looking into the new commissioner's background and joins us live from the new digital operation center. pamela, what did you find out? >> reporter: good morning, vai, the new fire commissioner is coming to us from virginia. and most recently as you said he did serve as deputy secretary of public safety and homeland security for the state. there he helped lead, manage and support 11 state agencies. prior to that he served as the fire chief of alexandria. in all commissioner thiel has more than 20 years of service in fire and emergency services across several states. he'll be inheriting 63 fire stations and more than 2,200 firefighters, paramedics and emts here in philadelphia. thiel will replace acting commissioner derrick sawyer appointed two years ago by

former mayor nutter. in addition may yor kenney will also be appointing blanch kerny as prison commissioner. looking forward to that. pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. philadelphia, the sports world and so many more people continue to remember flyers founder ed snider. news of his death yesterday sparked emotion and a hockey rink full of memories. ed snider died yesterday morning after a two-year fight with bladder cancer. he was 83 years old. snider was born in washington, d.c., but he moved to philadelphia in 1964. by the age of 33, snider had mortgaged his home to create the flyers. but his vision for sports in philadelphia wouldn't stop there. in the early 1990s he worked with the city and the business community to build what is today known as the wells fargo center. the flyers said funeral services will be private, but there will be a public remembrance ceremony at the wells fargo center in the near future to celebrate

snider's life. as you may know by now ed snider was fighting bladder cancer for the last two years. we spoke with a doctor of mercy fitzgerald hospital about the disease. he said there are often no symptoms, but there are some things that you should look for. >> you could have pain, you could have problems urinating. you can have some discomfort as well. you can have some irritation of the pelvis. but by far and away it's bleeding that is the first sign. >> the doctor tells us smoking is one possible cause of bladder cancer. right now there is no test for the disease. ed snider and comcast had a strong 20-year partnership. comcast is the parent company of nbc 10. and for more on the life and legacy of ed snider, make sure you have the nbc 10 app. we have photos and tributes to snider from family members and flyers players, past and present, you can also learn about snider's life outside of the rink. meanwhile, opposition to

the bomber who attacked the subway as well as an accomplice. and now to decision 2016. news in today some pennsylvania political heavy hitters are h p helping hillary clinton with her campaign. former governor ed rendell is among some of the clinton supporters helping out in phone banks. today marks one year since clinton announced she was running for president. we're now also two weeks away from the pennsylvania primary. and hillary clinton is talking money this morning in new york city. she was part of a roundtable about equal pay for women. clinton is campaigning heavily in new york as that state's primary approaches next tuesday. bill clinton meanwhile is in flushing, new york, stumping for his wife. this is a live picture of a campaign event there. hillary clinton has a 14-point lead over bernie sanders in new york, but sanders said he's not giving up the fight for the empire state. and republican john kasich is also in new york city this morning. he rallied his supporters to

well, there are new concerns about the zika virus. the nation's top health officials say it's spreading much faster than first thought. new estimates suggest that the mosquito that carries the virus is now in 30 states including pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. the national institutes of health and the cdc issued an urgent plea to congress to act now and pay for immediate steps to protect americans. the zika virus has been linked to birth defects. well, they're notd cleaning up in jackson, mississippi this morning after heavy rain pounded that area. streets flooded and cars were under water, homes were swamped, high winds also pulled down a number of trees. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> fortunately we haven't seen any heavy rain, but we have seen steady rainfall. and we're tracking showers now. the rain is in delaware and south jersey and still falling in philadelphia. but it's not going to last through the afternoon. we'll see clearing this

afternoon. and that will set the stage for some beautiful sunshine over the coming days. we got some chilly weather ahead as well. right now 49 degrees. the temperatures have dropped down in reading, but we're starting to see some breaks of sunshine there. so the numbers will climb this afternoon back into the 50s. 56 in philadelphia, the rain in cape may is cloudy and 57 degrees. and there's a rainy view of city avenue from here at the nbc 10 studios. it's been a steady but light rain in philadelphia. feels like it's coming down heavier because of the winds that are going to be with us into this afternoon, even after the rain ends. the steady rain now in delaware and south jersey, in fact a little bit heavier in northern kent county and delaware and into cumberland county. all that is going to sweep offshore. the clouds that are in delaware and south jersey and into philadelphia are already showing signs of clearing here. the breaks of sunshine for reading and allentown, it's going to be a sunny afternoon. hard to imagine with all the rain that's coming downright now. here's your hour by hour

forecast. 2:00, look at that, nice and clear for allentown, reading and philadelphia. the last few clouds will be moving through. and there's still some rain showers at the 2:00 hour in delaware and south jersey. and then showers will linger at the shore even into the 4:00 hour. but as we go into the evening hours, that rain heads offshore. and sunshine will end the day. and then things get chillier tonight. we'll see northwesterly winds tonight. that will bring in colder air for tomorrow morning. so still some showers into the afternoon hours for parts of the area, but clearing skies and breezy with afternoon temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. come tomorrow a chilly start 37 degrees, 60 in the afternoon with lots of sunshine on wednesday. and similar conditions for thursday and friday. just a little bit warmer each afternoon. it's a warming trend that will accelerate this weekend. saturday, sunny, 65. look at sunday ten degrees up, 75 degrees. and even warmer on monday getting closer to the 80 degree mark.

as any phillies fan knows the odds of catching a foul ball, they're pretty low. well, you're about to see someone beat those odds and then some. it's a tigers fan. this is in detroit. and he caught five foul balls yesterday. five. he got four during the game and one at batting practice. and get this, the tigers broadcast team said dugan gave all of the balls away. look at those kids how happy they are. he is a season ticketholder. i guess he must have figured i got tons of games to go to and i'll get more foul balls. on the basketball court, the harlem globe trotters, well, they still have it. three incredible shots from more than 80 feet away. that's ridiculous. globe trotters are performing today at this new t-mobile arena in las vegas. we'll see if he can make those shots again today. yeah, nice. tennis, anyone? an organization that's serviing

up the support to young people in philadelphia and all of the positive character building qualities that go along with tennis has a big fundraiser coming up later this week. pascal is the founder of the down the line and beyond foundation. we thank you so much for coming in, pascal. tell us about the organization and the children that are part of it. >> thank you for having me first. it's a very small organization. we basically bring tennis to about ten schools and 1,000 children. i like to compare ourself to the food truck of tennis. we are very agile and efficient. we could use our program right here. we have portable courts. we bring the tennis to the schools. we can work in basement, anywhere you want. >> well, tell me what do these programs do for the kids? >> well, besides the tennis piece, we have a very important component which is character and ethics. so we believe in that.

i believe in that. and we try to teach them that from a very young age. >> i guess tennis, like golf, teaches those things, you keep score. you're playing another person or doubles you keep score. and sort of an honor system, right? those are things that really come into play in a person's life. >> true, although i heard in golf that's where you find most people are cheating. [ laughter ] >> they're not supposed to, but yes. >> they're not supposed to, but they do. so, yes, indeed. that's what we're trying to get to those kids. >> and what does the game do? how does the game build character in that way? what does it do? is there something magical about tennis that teaches kids to build character? >> i don't think there's anything magical. but, you know, you have a lime court, if you play on hard court there's no mark on the ground, are you going to call it out, call it in, you have that choice. you have a one second moment where you can decide what to do

here in philadelphia. a live look now at the wells fargo center where thousands will rally in july. today, the media is getting a look at how things will work. nbc 10's pamela osborne is in the digital media center. pamela, mayor kenney says we are fitted for this event. >> remember, the dnc is expected to bring in at least 50,000 people, so you can only begin to imagine the planning that goes into getting ready for a crowd that large. and within the past half hour we got a look at the epicenter of it all and really just got a feel for how everything is going to go during that convention. we were inside of the wells fargo center as mayor jim kenney did his walk-through. he shared a lot of excitement about the upcoming convention, the city and the dnc says everything is going according to plan. >> we've done large events before. we've had the pope for a large

virus is proving to be, quote, scarier than first thought. unborn babies in the womb are at risk for longer period than first thought. and they're asking congress for emergency money to pay for the fight. here's nbc's tom costello. >> reporter: if there's a ground zero in the fight against zika carrying mosquitos in the u.s., it's miami. >> i'm looking for anything that may contain water. >> reporter: where inspectors are trying to kill mosquitos before they spread, an urgent mission to keep pregnant women in the u.s. from contracting the zika virus, already believed responsible for thousands of babies born with deformed heads and brains in latin america and the caribbean. researchers now believe the virus may even cause brain damage, but doesn't show up for years. >> we've also learned that the virus is likely to be a problem at much of the pregnancy period, not just probably the first trimester, but potentially throughout the pregnancy. >> reporter: so far the mosquito identified in 30 states, further north than first thought.

while that doesn't mean it's carrying the zika virus, health experts are concerned that pregnant women in southern states, from texas to florida, could be at risk as temperatures begin to rise. >> i'm very worried about the poor neighborhoods on u.s. [ gunfire ] coa -- gulf coast cities and worried we're going to be seeing microcephaly cases in the coming months. >> reporter: most at risk near standing water where mosquitos thrive. researchers hope to have a vaccine ready for trials by september, but a widespread rollout is a long way off. the nih and cdc now asking congress for nearly $2 billion in emergency funding. republicans in congress are insisting the white house use excess money allocated for ebola research first, as health experts warn the clock is ticking. for "today," tom costello, nbc news, washington. unions representing about 40,000 verizon workers say they'll go on strike tomorrow if a new contract is not reached. they've been working without a

contract since august. the employees mostly work on land line phone and internet operations on the east coast. the unions say they're trying to improve pension benefits and keep verizon from outsourcing jobs to contractors. in 2011 a strike lasted two weeks. the surge of tourism is causing a beer shortage in cuba. the communist-owned brewery that cranks out the island's two favorite brands is looking for a new plant to keep up with the growing private restaurant sector and demand from, you guessed it, american tourists. cuba saw a record 3.5 million visitors last year. and hundreds of people will step off a cruise ship from miami into havana next month. this is something you've got to see. a father and his daughter out fishing catch more than they expect. take a look. >> be careful. oh, my god! that's a big -- that is a big -- >> yeah, i think we had to beep

him out once or twice there. the kayaker and his 11-year-old daughter were fishing in louisiana. they thought they caught something harmless, maybe a cat fish or something. but as you can see it was a big gator. everything's fine but it was a little bit scary there as you can imagine for both of them. happy reunion for a dog and her owner in south florida after an incredible journey. >> what are you doing? >> the 14-year-old black lab swam nine miles between coral gables and biscayne bay. the owner says the dog has separation anxiety and may have jumped in looking for her owner who left for a few hours and the neighbors spotted the dog swimming in the middle of the bay and called for help. good thing fergie is home. the duke and duchess of cambridge had lunch with india's prime minister in new delhi. prince william and his wife kate are on the third day of their week-long trip to india.

happening now, president obama's celebrating equal payday. he's at the naming of a new national monument to honor the womens equality movement. a live look at the event in washington, d.c. museum in washington is now a national monument to womens rights. mr. obama created the belmont paul womens equality national monument with the presidential proclamation. in part it honors alice paul who was a founder of the movement. she was from mt. laurel, burlington county. chances are you don't go for a hike or run without them, blisters are nasty and they're painful. but researchers say there's a simple and cheap way of preventing them. and that doesn't mean staying on the couch i suspect. the view out the window starting to see some breaks in some of the live pictures of sunshine. your umbrella's going to get lonely over the next few days. got the seven-day forecast just ahead.

equal opportunities in schools and universities, workplaces, public service, and, yes, equal pay for equal work. and they understood that the power of their voice in our democracy was the first step in achieving these broader goals. their leader, alice paul, was a brilliant community organizer and political strategist. and she recruited women and men from across the country to join their cause. and they began picketing seven days a week in front of the white house to demand their right to vote. they were mocked. they were derided. they were arrested. they were beaten. they were forced feedings during hunger strikes. and through all this women young and old kept marching for suffrage, kept protesting for suffrage. and in 1920 they won that right. we ratified the 19th amendment. but the suffragists didn't stop

there. they move sbood this historic house and continued their work. from these rooms steps away from the capitol they drafted speeches and letters and legislation. they pushed congress and fought for the passage of the equal rights amendment. they advocated for the inclusion of women in the u.n. charter in the 1964 civil rights act. they campaigned for women who were running for congress. this house became a hot bed of activism, a centerpiece for the struggle for equality. a monument to -- >> watching and listening to president obama at the belmont house and museum in washington. it is now a national monument to womens rights. he created the belmont paul presidential monument proclamation. you heard him talking about alice paul, she was a founder of the movement and she is from mt. laurel, burlington county. meanwhile, happening today,

conjoined twins in texas who were born as part of a set of triplets are set to be separated. they were born may of last year along with their sister. they are joined at the pelvis and have separate legs. experts say the chances of having conjoined twins in a set of triplets are one in 50 million. proved today playing in the nfl causes brain injuries. new research shows more than 40% of retired professional football players have signs of a traumatic brain injury. sensitive mri scans were used on former -- 40 former athletes who played anywhere from two to 17 years in the nfl. 43% had significant damage to the white matter, which connects different regions of the brain. the same percentage scored low on memory, learning and attention tests. those who played the longest had the highest risk of brain trauma. well, prostate cancer patients who receive hormone therapy could be at an increased

risk for depression. researchers from boston allow -- followed a large group of men who were treated for prostate cancer. they found that those men who received testosterone suppressing therapy were 23% more likely to develop depression than those men who did not have that treatment. good news for people who are bothered with foot blisters. researchers at stanford, university, found paper tape that sells for less than a dollar at the drugstore can help. the mildly adhesive surgical tape is successful with preventing blisters in over 100 ultramarathoners. and hackers are targeting netflix accounts and making money off of you. there's an easy way to tell when someone you don't know streams your movies and shows. nbc 10 national reporter lindsey mastis shows us how to find out whether you're at risk. >> reporter: it didn't take long for andrew solon to find out someone else was streaming movies and shows on his netflix account.

>> a name lorene had created a user profile. i thought that was strange because i don't know anyone named lorene. she watched some kids shows, some dramas, some tv shows. >> reporter: how do you think they got into your account? >> i'm not sure. >> reporter: the florida center for cyber security explains hackers are using phishing scams and malware to get log-in information. then they sell it on the deep web. >> about 100 to 150 bucks a year, so they could sell it at 50% off and still making a lot of money by selling your account that somebody else is using. >> reporter: even though netflix blacks out most of the credit card information, hackers can use those details to send victims e-mails asking them to update account info. the part sial credit card numbe makes it look legit. he believes the stranger watching his movies only did so for a week or two. he caught it early because it's hard to miss a new profile.

>> they could have watched under my user profile and i probably wouldn't have known. >> reporter: you can also check your viewing history and see if there are any programs listed that you didn't watch. >> that was lindsey mastis reporting. and if someone is accessing your account, netflix recommends signing out of all devices. this should forcibly get rid of anyone that you don't want having access. and then reset your password. experts believe hulu and roku are vulnerable as well. well, helpful heroes students collected 1,200 books to donate to the childrens hospital of philadelphia reach out and read program. they loaded them up today to give to the hospital. the helpful heroes program encourages kids to give back to other kids. very nice. well, get ready for a celebration of real life heroes this weekend in philadelphia. the delaware valley legacy fund is honoring people and organizations working to improve the lives of those in the lgbt community. samantha, executive director of the delaware valley legacy fund.

and samantha is here. she's a frequent guest of our show. samantha, for those who don't know or don't remember, remind us what the organization does and the work that you do. >> great, well thanks for having us back. a community foundation skprks so we give grants and funding to organizations here in philadelphia, nonprofits, that are at the front lines meeting emerging needs of the lgbt community. a number of issues like lgbt homelessness which is an epidemic here in our city. older adults, food insecurity, housing, et cetera. >> this year you guys are honoring philadelphia mayor jim kenney. tell us why. >> yeah, our heroes event honors leaders in the lgbt community and allies who help support our mission to equality in the area. mayor jim kenney is receiving our ally award this year. if there's ever an ally in our community, it's certainly the mayor. he's only been mayor a little bit.

while he was on city council he was an advocate and helped pass a number of bills that helped make philadelphia a more safer place for the lgbt community. >> and you're also awarding a lifetime hero award. tell us about that and who the recipient is. >> so our lifetime hero is executive director of the equality forum. they've been around a number of years, and they're putting together a great lgbt quality forum program in conjunction with dnc this year. and last year they had an excellent international quality forum that focused on the anniversary of the annual reminder lgbt rights protest here in philadelphia. >> tell me about your organization and the support that you've managed to get over the years. >> yeah, so we're almost 25 years young. our heroes event is ten years old. and, you know, i think we've seen the lgbtq community change over the course of the years in terms of rights and supports for folks that are lgbtq identified. and that has helped as the

it's cooled down quite a bit. if we started off in the low 60s, but we'll see the temperatures climb in spite of that. a wind now out of the north at 15 miles an hour. it's at the shore that the clouds will linger and still some showers into the afternoon hours. but it's much warmer as the shore. the southerly winds are continuing for delaware and south jersey. so is the light rain. but it is already clearing north and west. and that's where we're getting a shift in the wind that's bringing in the cooler air. you can see the turnaround in the winds happening right at the shore now it's a 13-mile-an-hour breeze for pottstown, allentown and mt. pocono, a little stronger in philadelphia. but we are going to see these numbers climb in spite of that northerly wind because we're getting some sunshine. look at the clouds. clearing out of allentown, berks county, lancaster county also seeing clearing skies. the rain has already ended in chester. and you'll see sunshine soon. futurecast showing at noontime there's the rain in delaware and south jersey. the clouds move out, the temperatures get a boost with

that bright sunshine. and then this evening it's going to be a quick cooldown without the sun and those northerly winds the cold air will come in 46 degrees. that's by 11:00 tonight. tomorrow morning we'll drop down into the 30s. so much colder start tomorrow morning than what we felt this morning. clearing skies this afternoon. the rain coming to an end even in delaware and south jersey. and the breeze will battle the sunshine. the breeze trying to keep things cooler, the sunshine warming us back into the upper 50s and low 60s today. tomorrow, you'll feel that chill in the air. still a little bit breezy in the mornings, so the windchill will be a factor first thing. but a nice warmup for wednesday. a warming trend for the rest of the workweek. low 60s after morning temperatures in the upper 30s for thursday and friday. but then the temperatures really come up over the weekend 65 saturday, 70s with sunshine for sunday and monday any wet weather will wait until later in the week. we'll be right back.
