likely be remembered here in philadelphia in big ways. here where the flyers played the flag is at half-staff. some people are remembering him in smaller ways today. remembering what he meant to them. >> they gave him a chance to play hockey but gave my son a whole new lease on life. >> reporter: lisa called a local radio station after ed snider's death. ed snider didn't know her she says but he touched her family. >> i could never thank him enough. in really couldn't. my son could have easily, you know, become a victim of the streets and, you know, got into the wrong crowd. >> reporter: her sonoma enthusiast was 6 and learned,000 skate and became part of the ed snider youth hockey league. mat was diagnosed with adhd.

of the young women accused of turning a case of shoplifting in to a stabbing. it happened at the five below store in center city last week. lifted and followed outside by an employee. when the manager tried to get the items back she was stabbed. a surveillance video showing now former ocean city employee raiding a homeowner's refrigerator has prompted a review by police. the man is the stepson of the resort's mayor. he's taking stuff out of a frigid house where he just tested a smoke detector. sources say the man is joseph bernado. he no longer works for the resort but after seeing this video police are looking into recent theft cases in other

homes. a wet morning, turned no n to a clear evening. we have another big change coming tonight. >> let's bring in glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, you're tracking a potential freeze for tonight? >> the temperature will be dropping quite a bit in just a matter of a few hours. the clear sky one of the ingredients here the other thing is the wind eventually diminishing and that's the big question for the tonight. we have the clear skies, obviously, just about to clear right at the beaches, and we have the freeze warning for some of the northern and western parts of the area until 8:00 a.m., berks, lehigh, northern chester, bucks and montgomery counties. right now it's still in the mid-50s so got a long way to go to get down the freezing points.

62 degrees in philadelphia. but temperature really is going to drop fast as we go through the tonight and it will be in the 30s by morning. we'll see when it will warm up, we're talking about 70s in the seven day in just a few minutes. new at 6:00 a jury convicted former camden anniversary of the of theft. shane streator collected a state disability pension at the same time he was working as a martial arts struckor. he also competed in mixed martial arts while too injured to work as a firefighter. authorities say he collected more than $82,000. the-year-old faces up to ten years in prison and faces sentencing may 20th. from our lehigh valley bureau a 20-year-old man is dead after a fiery crash. police tell us john delaney murray was thrown from his car. more information may come out tomorrow after an autopsy. philadelphia has new fire

and prison commissioners. the mayor made the announcement today calling it the right time for a change. he appointed adam teal as fire commissioner and lance carney will take the top job in the prison system. >> the current commissioner has done a good job but some decisions made by the administration in the eight years has created a serious problem in our department. >> the democratic national committee showed off its plans for this summer's convention. this morning a convention that will happen right here in philadelphia. here's a live look at the wells fargo center where that convention will be held. city officials including mayor kenny did walk through where 50,000 people will rally in july. where democrats, course, will nominate their presidential candidate. today the city and dnc said everything is going according to plan. >> we've done large events before. we had the pope for a large

new at 6:00 the navy held a service at washington crossing yesterday to honor a bucks county native who died at sea more than a half century ago. a submarine accidents claimed his life in 1963 and his body was never found. at the time there was no memorial service. when his descendants learned he qualified full military honors they arranged for that service to happen. >> pennsylvania high schools are a step closer to having the life-saving medication narcan at their disal. the governor said the application process has begun for hundreds of school to receive free doses.

addicted which put a spotlight on the heroin and opiod epidemic. if community forum involved southeast country's top official and featured white house national drug policy director. >> we have a role to play. there are things we can do to help. >> reporter: the panel ranged from advocates who lost family and friends from addiction and law enforcement. >> 85% of our crime is because of the drug problem. >> reporter: the panel included nbc 10's own vince who worked on generation addicted along with a colleague. >> that's why we do this. >> reporter: philadelphia mental health commissioner spoke out of the need to go after drug pills. advocate whose son died of a heroin overdose and would have celebrated his 32nd birthday

bringing in colder air. we got up to 50 degrees on sunday, only 43 saturday. 69 degrees on monday. that's the exception to the rule. the average high now is 63. that's what we hit today. we'll be a little bit below average the rest of the week. the temperatures now dropping in through the 50s, north and west approximately still not all that chilly. the wind makes it feel cooler. the temperatures really are going to drop quickly during the evening hours. it's still kind of windy, 15 to 20 mile-per-hour winds. by morning that needs to really drop-off in order for the temperature to reach as low as it needs go to produce this freeze that the freeze warning is for for tonight. if not tonight but tomorrow night. berks county, lehigh valley, northern chester and upper bucks county. in the last several hours the sunshine has returned.

even getting sunny at the shore, and now that we've seen that, well things are really going to be staying pretty nice. this is the rain. 6:00 a.m. it's, of course, long gone. you can see just about everybody got some and now nobody is getting any. not for a while. got a dry country and dry weather pattern here. that's very fortunate for the phillies. they've their home stand just in time. they weren't home over the weekend. tonight's wind different. blowing from left fielder to right field corner or even a little bit in from left field. just the opposite of what we saw yesterday. so it's going to be a little harder to hit home runs tonight but it'shnghç going to be chill the end of the game. take a coat with you if you're headed out there. for the rest of the night possible freeze north and west 32 degrees for the low temperature. just so it's barely getting to the freezing points.

i'm john clark. the flyers on thursday will play first game in the 50 year history of the franchise without its founder ed snider. the first playoffs without ed. flyers hit ties for the first practice after ed passed away yesterday. the flyers are dedicating their playoff run to ed snider. they say they are playing for him and want to end the flyers 41 stanley cup drought in honor of their chairman. >> it's pretty, kind of special. holding onto see if we make the playoffs and now he'll be looking over us from up there. like i said, he's a well-respected man and i mean everyone wants to win another cup and it should motivate us to get one this year to show respect. >> reporter: two of ed snider's
