nbc 10 breaking news. and that breaking news, a 14-year-old girl was stabbed inside a school in philadelphia's logan neighborhood. skyforce 10 was over the scene at jay cooke elementary school this morning. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at the school. matt, what do you know so far? >> reporter: well, vai, soon after word got out that a stabbing happened here at the school, parents started showing up just to make sure their kids were okay. take a look here. take a look at this video the suspect coming out of the school in handcuffs. emts and police were dispatched to the jay cooke junior high school just before 9:00. there was a 14-year-old girl in the nurse's office. she'd been stabbed once in the right shoulder and once in the right arm. she is stable right now at einstein. police now beginning to find out what sparked this altercation. what we know at this point is

the stabbing happened in a third floor hallway. it's unclear what kind of object was used for the stabbing, but parents are obviously concerned. we spoke with one of them who showed up here after all this happened. >> by the grace of god i work directly around the corner, i live in this neighborhood, so everything like now took me three minutes to get around the corner. so i'm here, they're fine, i've seen their face, she's cool and now i got to go back to work. >> reporter: anything like this happen before? >> not to my knowledge, no, sir. this is the first time it happened here outside of the incident with the fight not too long ago. >> reporter: and as we take another live look here, that's the school district spokesperson who just walked out of the school. so i'm going to run over there and talk with him and try to get an update. school is still in session. classes resume for the day. for now we've seen quite a bit of school police presence out here along west loudon street ased investigation continues this morning. live in logan, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. thank you, matt. now an update on breaking news we first brought you in the 6:00 hour. philadelphia police are investigating a homicide.

and the victim was found following a s.w.a.t. situation. just before 4:00 a.m. police responded to a 911 call of shots heard from a house on north edgewood street in west philadelphia. officers saw a man inside the home. police say he refused to let them in. they called s.w.a.t., who broke into the home, officers found a 25-year-old man shot several times near the front door. he would later die at the hospital. s.w.a.t. officers then continued to search the home. >> when they got to the second floor, they found the 23-year-old male hiding in one of the rear rooms. and s.w.a.t. officers took this individual into custody. >> authorities say they are considering that man as a suspect. they say he's refusing to talk with police at this time. and happening today, a nun accused of driving drunk is due in court. she failed a sobriety test in november, since then she hasn't been working at little catholic

high school for girls, but her colleagues want her back. nbc 10's deanna durante have a look at the case. >> reporter: it's an early saturday morning in november. watch as sister kimberly miller stumbles during a field sobriety test. at one point while talking to police it appears as though she could be praying. this as police retrieve a bottle of wine from her car. in november police say miller backed into an auto repair shop, didn't stop to report the damage and instead kept on driving. they say multiple 911 callers reported a car driving erratically in the minutes before police stopped her near the black horse pike. later in the morning miller gives police a breathalyzer while handcuffed. police say it showed she was operating a car at two times the legal limit. in the days after her arrest an online petition gained 500 signatures. today, more than 2,200 are there all urging miller's return to the classroom. the archdiocese placed miller on leave from her teaching post at little flower high school in the days after this video was made public. deanna durante, nbc 10 news.

and tens of thousands of verizon land line and cable workers on the east coast have walked off the job. they've been working without a contract since august. nbc 10 cameras caught verizon workers in center city picketing this morning. they are among 40,000 verizon employees from new york to virginia who are fighting against a pension freeze and the company's ability to make layoffs easier. these workers deal with land lines and cable, not verizon wireless. verizon says it's trained thousands of nonunion employees to fill-in during the strike. and happening now, lawyers for comedian bill cosby are asking a federal court in philadelphia to reseal his deposition testimony. cosby's testimony is about extramarital affairs, drugs and payments to women. his lawyers say it should not be used in legal battles involving women who are accusing him of sexual assault and defamation. the testimony was sealed until a judge ruled to make the documents public at the request of the associated press.

and happening today in delaware county, three former members of the fire company will be in court after being charged with stealing from their own department. delaware county prosecutors say gary bryce, elizabeth salini and her daughter lauren are all facing felony theft charges. bryce is the former company chief. elizabeth was the president and lauren was the treasurer. investigators say the three of them would write checks to each other and cash them. the taxpayer money was supposed to go towards the volunteer service. police say more than $52,000 went unaccounted for over a three-year period. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> pretty cool start today, but plenty of sunshine out there right now as we take a live look at the philadelphia museum of art. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with our forecast. glenn. >> yeah, vai, we've got bright sunshine out there across the entire area. and it was a chilly start.

it's a cool day for this time of the year. look how cool it started. quakertown at 28 degrees, pottstown 29, allentown 30. so we did get a freeze in at least parts of the area. and we may get another one tonight because the temperature really isn't going up that much. still in the mid-40s in pottstown, allentown, reading, lancaster, barely 50 degrees in philadelphia even with the bright sunshine. so it's going to be hard to get even to 60 degrees. we're watching this one area of clouds that may come over tonight. that's about the only thing that's going to stop us from potentially getting down near the freezing point in much of the area. a little bit of light snow and rain, that would not be coming in. we've got clear skies through the rest of the day. high temperatures getting into the upper 50s. and not much wind as posed to yesterday. we'll talk more about when it's

really going to warmup, we're talking 70s with the seven-day in a few minutes. thank you, glenn. time now for a check on the roads with nbc first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. jessica, what are you seeing out there? >> vai, for the most part we're doing okay on a lot of the majors. we are seeing some delays on the vine street expressway around 24th street. so approaching the schuylkill headed westbound we're seeing some big delays. we do have some roving work crews on the schuylkill that caused a lot of delays this time headed westbound. and upper merion gulph curve in merion county, construction on the betsy ross it's ongoing of course and it will be closed there until may. that might be something you want to plan into your commute. the 42 freeway over in new jersey this is right around creek road near the belmar area. no problems, you can see right here headed towards philadelphia we are doing okay. no big backups there over the bridges. but we are watching some 30-minute airport delays due to too many planes coming into the airport at one time. this is for arriving flights, if

you're picking someone up at the airport, you may have to wait a little bit, grab some lunch on the way. thank you, jessica. two bucks county elementary schools are being closed depiet -- despite a plea from parents last night. both schools will close at the end of the school year. school board officials say the schools will close because of low enrollment. next year students will be sent to other schools in the district. philadelphia's proposed sugary drink tax took center stage last night at a city council budget meeting. take a look. hundreds showed up to the meeting and they agreed on one thing, that philadelphia should be providing better services for children. but the fight is over how to pay for it. mayor jim kenney posed taxing distributors three cents an ounce on sugary drinks to raise money for universal pre-k and revitalizing community centers.

neighbors are worried the tax will be passed down to them. >> you see corporations that you're taxing soda. i see families that have bills, that have mortgages. >> i understand that there will be jobs lost, but there will also be more jobs gained because we'll have a better educated system. >> details for the next community forum have not been released, but the public will have more opportunities to testify on the budget at city hall. the pennsylvania house could vote as early as today on a bill to legalize medical marijuana. the state senate passed it yesterday. the bill would make the drug available to patients who suffer from illnesses like cancer, also chronic pain. supporters hope the bill will be on governor tom wolf's desk by the end of the week. medical marijuana is already legal in delaware and in new jersey. today is your chance to learn more about the candidates for pennsylvania attorney general.

they'll be answering questions from reporters in harrisburg. on the republican side state senator john rafferty, facing joe peters. peters is a former scranton police officer and state prosecutor who once served as kathleen kane's official spokesman. here are the democratic candidates, montgomery county commissioner josh shapiro and allegheny county attorney. darby township will swear-in the second african-american police chief ever in the state of pennsylvania. regina price will be sworn in tonight. she'll lead the darby township police department after a 29-year career in florida where she rose through the ranks to become a major back in 2011. well, back in court. but there's a big difference about this latest hearing that's about to get under way for the so-called affluenza teen.

need repairs. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> and on the other hand we have a dry weather pattern. it's bright and sunny out there now. we're going to have a lot of sunny days over the next several days. we also have some frosty nights just like we had last night in parts of the area. a lot of sunshine, good time to wash the car because we're not going to be getting any rain for quite a while. and the warm weather that really kicks in over the weekend. there's the bright blue sky now, but the wind is from the east. east-northeast at 10, that's going to limit the temperature rise somewhat. 50 degrees right now. six degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. we're in the mid 40s most areas north and west. west chester only 41. that is the cool spot right now other than the pocono. and we're near 50 farthest to the south, delaware and south jersey, glassboro's at 47.

these are the low temperatures we showed you north and west. doylestown was 30, but mt. holly 32 degrees. it was 40 in philadelphia. there's going to be a huge contrast again tonight from the city to the suburbs, at least ten degree differences. 33 atlantic city airport. 28 at toms river this morning. 36 in dover. we have that northeast wind right now. it is not nearly as strong as it was yesterday. and it's going to diminish quite a bit tonight. so we're going to have calm conditions. so the wind really won't be much of a factor for the phillies tonight. it is going to be cool again, so you're going to need a coat for that. 52 degrees at the start of the game, then it starts going down into the 40s, low 40s by 11:00. so even colder than last night's game. as we go through the rest of the day, we're in the 50s and not

really getting to 60 degrees. even cooler at the shore. then tonight we watch out for any of those high clouds coming in that could prevent the temperature from dropping even more, i think. if we are clear, it's going to be colder than these numbers coming out of the computer are showing us. millville i think will be down closer to 30. allentown closer to 30. same thing with reading. and tomorrow the temperature gets close to 60 degrees. very low humidity once again. and then tomorrow night another chilly night with some areas of frost. so a few days very similar out there. so the cool air, that's hanging around for a while. as we go into the weekend though it gets warmer and warmer. and it peaks on monday. then it doesn't cool off a whole lot after that. for the rest of the day today we have sunny skies, not as windy

this is nbc 10 news. the mission to cure cancer is getting a big financial boost. it's one of the largest ever for cancer research. and some of the money is coming to philadelphia. researchers at the university of pennsylvania are part of the elite group of cancer research centers taking part in the project. the parker institute for cancer immunotherapy founded by sean parker is funding a $250 million grant. top doctors at penn and half a dozen other cancer centers will

work side by side with drug makers to develop vaccines to fight and cure cancer. here's a live look at lincoln financial field in south philadelphia. that's where next month hundreds of people will gather to take a stand against cancer by shaving their heads. the inaugural one mission buzz off for our kids with cancer with help raise money and awareness and promises to be a great time. ashley is the founder of one mission, a kids cancer support foundation. ashley is here now joins us. we appreciate it. ashley, we were just talking about this during the break, i went to your website and looked at it just to prepare for this interview. it was interesting, i just talked about the $250 million grant. when there's research for cancer, money raised for it, that's a lot of money. but your foundation seems to deal with the here and now. explain that to us. >> exactly. so i founded one mission after

my first born had cancer when he was an infant he had aml, which is a rare form of leukemia. and we lived in the hospital for 188 days. and to your point i noticed that the day-to-day things, the parking passes, the food vouchers, all of the little things added up to help the families get through treatment and so when it came time for me to decide what i was going to do with my foundation, i knew that it needed to be immediate relief for the families while we were waiting for a cure. >> that's really great. you're in the boston area? >> we are, yep. >> so tell me about the event. and tell me why you decided to bring it here to philadelphia. >> definitely. the buzz off is, again, super fun. those who are brave enough to shave, they come to, you know, gillette stadium at home and lincoln financial stadium here in philly. and the event is really like a big party. so people shave their heads, we clap and cheer, but they've previously raised money. and the purpose of the money

that we're going to raise to help the people in philadelphia is financial relief. so those families who can't afford to pay mortgages or can't afford gas money to get to treatment, one mission's going to help them. >> tell me what the response has been from those that you helped in these short-term situations? >> yeah, the families they don't know how to say thank you because there really isn't a word for that. a single mom who is barely making it anyway, their child -- her child gets diagnosed and she can, you know, now think about feeding herself while they're at the hospital. she can take time off of work. the financial assistance is paying her rent. really just helps her to be able to focus on her child and not worry about bills. and that's what one mission does. >> and you get a lot of philadelphians there involved. >> yeah, we do. we have about 50 or 60 signed up so far. and we're looking to shave a couple hundred heads. so for anybody who's watching and is brave enough to shave, go

nbc 10 breaking news. and that breaking news, a 14-year-old girl was stabbed at a school in philadelphia's logan neighborhood. skyforce 10 was over jay cooke elementary school earlier this morning. nbc 10's matt delucia is live at the scene for us. matt, you just got more information. what did you find out? >> reporter: vai, i just spoke with the school district spokesman. he told me both the victim and suspect are eighth graders here at jay cooke elementary school. this all happened right before school began. there was a fight on the third floor. and the suspect allegedly grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the victim in a hallway. this is the suspect coming out of the school in handcuffs. emts and police were dispatched to the school here. it's a k through eight school. the 14-year-old had been stabbed once in the right shoulder and

at the jersey shore from our camera in cape may. it's beautiful out there. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with our wednesday forecast. hey, glenn. >> hey, vai. yeah, be ware of all that sunshine at the shore. it's deceptive. the winds coming off the ocean, so it's not going to be warm there for many days to come. we've got bright blue skies throughout the region. it's not as windy as it was yesterday, but it is colder than it was at the same time. 50 degrees now in philadelphia despite all that sunshine and mid 40s. north and west 40s, pretty good chance that nobody's going to get to 60 degrees this afternoon. we've got sunshine here, but some clouds back to the west. that's the one area that we're watching that could potentially keep the temperature from dropping to at least as low a level as what we got last night.

you can see the wind not as strong, but it's coming out of the northeast. it's going to limit the temperature rise getting into the upper 50s this afternoon. but we're talking about upper 70s before the seven-day is out. that's coming in just a few minutes. thank you, glenn. right now affluenza teen ethan couch is inside a texas courtroom for a probation hearing. we just got this video of couch entering the courtroom in ft. worth just a few minutes ago. couch turned 19 years old on monday and his case was moved from the juvenile system to adult court. the judge is setting the conditions of his adult probation. in 2013 couch drove drunk and crashed killing four people. he was just 16 at the time. at that point a judge sentenced him to ten years probation. he violated that probation last month by fleeing to mexico with his mother. tonya couch is waiting to learn if she'll be indicted for helping him. a 72-year-old woman telling

her story of survival. she was rescued after stranded for nine days in the arizona mountains. >> it has been a trek, a spiritual journey -- >> looking back, ann rogers says she would have stayed with her vehicle after it broke down. but after spending a night in her car with her dog, she tried to climb higher to get a stronger cell phone signal at a higher elevation. as the days passed she left clues like help sign made of sticks next to part of a carcass she found. after nine days she finally saw a search helicopter. >> finally, finally have human contact. and see that they were there. it was overwhelming. >> rogers says she survived by eating plants and drinking pond water. she lost some weight but only got a few scratches during her ordeal. the fbi is trying to find out who made off with several andy warhol prints after a museum heist in missouri.

you probably recognize these iconic soup cans, they were created by warhol in 1968, and they're valued at just less than $500,000. police say seven of the ten prints were snatched from the museum walls. investigators say there are no security guards at the museum after hours when the prints were stolen. police are offering a $25,000 reward. and happening today, young scientists from across the country will visit president obama. the white house science fair features more than 130 students who produced the best experiments and products. two of those students are from our area. a 3d printer designed a case to keep headphone cords from getting tangled. great idea. and a project to identify the best breeds of hen to meet the growing demand for pasture raised eggs. pope francis says he will travel to lesbos on saturday to

show solidarity to refugees recently arriving on the island. the visit comes as migrants are being deported from greece back to turkey under a controversial european union program. tomorrow night, the flyers will play their first game in franchise history without their founder ed snider. the flyers hit the ice for first practice after he passed away on monday. they're dedicating their playoff run to him. they want to end their 41-year stanley cup drought in honor of their chairman. some flyers alumni remembered snider last night at the wells fargo center. >> i would like to ask everybody to bow their heads and take a moment of silence and just remember mr. ed snider. >> former flyers players were there for an ed snider youth hockey foundation event. they were raising money for what ed called his legacy. they said the flyers are a family and that snider believed that once a flyers, always a

this week's wednesday's child is a sweet and energetic little girl that can really light up a room. having a forever family would truly make her life complete. i recently got the chance to hang out with jalisa. the first thing you notice about

jalisa is her huge smile. and few places make a child smile more than the garden state discovery museum in cherry hill, new jersey. don't touch the bubble. oh -- we'll do it again. we'll do it again. an outgoing 6-year-old who's nonverbal. but make no mistake about it she communicates effectively using sign language, hand gestures and facial expressions. she's looking for a forever family with lots of love and patience. ideally this little first grader would thrive if she were an only child because she craves one-on-one attention. she will play dress-up or be a tomboy and play hockey. score! >> jalisa is a love bug. she is full of energy. she will have you on your feet from the minute she wakes up to the minute she goes to bed. she goes to school. she's on a good school routine. she does great in school.

but a local company is taking the guilt out of gaming. and this project is actually a family affair. ray, greg and mary sue are a local family that started the facebook game called a better world. we appreciate you guys for being here. tell us about this, is this the kind of game i get on my facebook post where people say play this game? is that how it works? >> well, a better world is a virtual world game on facebook, so it's like games you may have seen on facebook where you have an immersive world, players have their character in games, their neighborhoods, they play with other people. but what makes a better world different is that players are advancing by doing good. so they're actually doing things like sending get well notes to sick children, recovering from illnesses, expressing gratitude, sharing love. and they do that, they earn do good goals and positive points and allows them to expand and advance in the game. >> very interesting. tell us how you came up with the concept, with the idea. >> well, you know, games are

immer immersive, imaginative, interactive, there's this real power of games that pulls you in and lets you get lost. and we wanted to use that power for good. and so we thought games could really be used to change the world. we could use it to channel that power to do good. >> part of a do good gaming movement around the country. what we're aiming for right now is to get up to a billion good deeds done. so far we've actually reached 40 million good deeds done by 4 million people. >> mary sue, tell your role in this. because a lot of moms don't want their kids involved in games, but this is a good one. >> well, there's no violence, everything is -- all the things you'd want to teach your kids, being graceful, our game is built on positive psychology which shows that being grateful makes you feel good. we also help charities. every month we have a charity that when the people -- all the players meet a certain goal, we release funds. like we released funds to the

ymca, operation warm run and warm coats. what else do we do? >> yeah, tell us -- i want to know some of the charities that you're involved in. >> big restaurant in philadelphia, we have helped them with providing thousands of meals, healthy meals for kids. >> do you have -- are there more plans in the works for more games for good causes? >> essentially right now we're focusing on really building this game out internationalizing the game. the next step is actually to take the game around the world. we do have people all over the world who speak english and who can play the game, but we're looking to actually get into spanish and french and portuguese so it can hit north and south america as well. >> do you have a background in any of this, in the gaming industry? >> my background is in technology. and also in psychology and philosophy. so we kind of pulled that together. and their backgrounds are in business. so we kind of came together and said what can we really do to make a difference and better world was born from that conversation. >> we really wanted to do something very, very different

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> and this would be a great day for an outdoor concert. and even through the weekend. great for outdoor activities. but we do have some frosty nights. it gets chilly at night, so you need some kind of jacket first thing in the morning when it's the coldest. lots of sunny days coming up over the next seven. and a warmer weekend. a lot warmer. here's a live picture out at the airport. and we've got blue skies out there. it is crystal clear 50 degrees. the winds out of the east. east-northeast at 10 miles an hour. as long as the winds stay coming from that direction, that's going to limit how warm it's going to get especially if you're closer to the ocean. it was only 50 degrees on sunday after 43 saturday. we got up to 69 monday, but the temperatures going down after that. 58 today, 60 degrees tomorrow.

so a little bit below average. it's 46 at kennett square. 47 in washington township and trenton. 46 in quakertown, allentown, reading. 45 in pottstown, 46 in oxford and southwestern chester county. and near 50 degrees farther to the south. 53 in woodbine is the warm spot right now. and beach haven 50 degrees but not going to get much warmer than that because of the wind direction as you can see it's just starting to come in off the ocean a little bit. and the wind speeds only 5 to 10 miles an hour on average compared to what we saw yesterday which was 15 to 20 with higher gusts. and what about the gusts in the future? this afternoon we have big gusts of 5 miles an hour in philadelphia. there's the wind direction coming off the ocean. and it's windier there. that's going to keep the temperature cooler. and so you got to dress

differently if you're headed to the shore than inland. look how windy it is inland, calm. that's going to allow the temperature to drop quite a bit. and by tomorrow morning the wind is very light as well. now, as we go through the rest of the day, well, we obviously have the clear skies. but there's some clouds back to the west that could potentially come over to at least part of the area tonight. and that would limit the temperature drop that would come during the night. right now it looks like it would be northern portions of the area getting that. as we go to the phillies game tonight it's going to be even colder than last night's game. temperatures dropping into the low 40s by the end of the game. for today, sunny skies, not as windy as it was yesterday. highs in the upper 50s. not too much different tomorrow. 38 for the low in philadelphia, but near 30 in the suburbs. and we don't really warm up until saturday. and then sunday really warm,
