nbc 10 news starts now. a lot of guns out there. police officer shot. we are learning more about the shooting that sent an officer to the hospital and landed two suspects in custody. it is deadline day for last-minute tax çfilers. we have you covered with what you need to know if you need more time. heading home. the flyers return to south philadelphia tonight to try and chip away at the series lead the capitals built in washington. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. some spots could hit 80 degrees. yes, starting to feel more like summer than spring. let's take a live look outside over center city. meteorologist bill henley is tracking the conditions where you live with our new neighborhood weather.

bill? >> we haven't hit 80 degrees yet but we'll see a big warmup today. the temperatures are starting off cool in some areas, 37 degrees, on the chilly side for south jersey. that's a live view from south jersey, 37 degrees right now. but look at delaware. 46 degrees, will be warming up significantly during the day. and the pennsylvania suburbs right now at 50 degrees but we will see the temperatures climb steadily as the day goes on. after they come down a little more just after sunrise, 49 degrees, 10:00, 63 degrees in yardley. for philadelphia, starting off at 50 degrees and a good warmup, a fast warmup, 51 degrees at 6:00. by 9:00, 62 degrees. at the bottom of the screen, you can see the seven-day forecast. that shows warming temperatures today near 80 but somewhat cooler temperatures to come. i'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in just a few minutes. jessica boyington is watching first alert traffic. jessie? >> that's right, bill, we're

watching the vine street expressway right now. this is right around 24th street. vine street expressway open for business. no construction closing it down in either direction. cars moving along nicely here, westbound toward the schuylkill or eastbound towards 95. if you're headed out the door today over into montgomery county, hatfield township, bethlehem pike and hill top pike, disabled vehicle is blocking some lanes there. no problems 11 minutes north or south from route 30 to the schuylkill expressway. this morning, a philadelphia police officer is recovering after he was shot trying to stop i car break-in. we have live team coverage. katy zachry is at the hospital in university city where the officer is being treated. we begin with matt delucia following theç investigation. matt? >> on the way over here we stopped by the scene at 59th and market. a lone police car remained there. earlier it was very different, gunfire and a foot chase that led to one officer being shot

and two suspects in custody. take a look at this video, this is from the scene, just before 9:00. two officers were flagged down by a woman who said two men were breaking in her car. the officers approached the men, they tried to run and then officer james mccollough tackled one of of the suspects. he was shot in the leg. both suspects were caught a short time later and here's the mayor and police commissioner talking about what happened. >> dangerous city and a lot of guns out there. have to get the guns off the street and make sure that our officers are safe, our citizens are safe. he's in good shape. hopefully he'll be okay. >> this was an instance when someone flagged them down. this is what they do. it's a dangerous job but they do it with pride and professionalism. we're very proud of them. >> there were people in the area, witnesses who watched this whole thing unfold.

we'll hear from them coming up at 4:30. >> we'll see you shortly, matt. katy zachry is live at penn presbyterian medical center in university city where the officer is recovering. >> the last update we got is that james mccollough is in stable condition and it's most important to note he is expected to make a full recovery. now, philadelphia mayor jim kenney, police commissioner richard ross and other top brass spoke to us not long after seeing officer james mccollough at penn presbyterian hospital. he was one gunshot wound to the left thigh. they are expecting him to mack a full recovery. the 24-year-old has been a philadelphia police officer for two years, assigned to west philadelphia. his mother and his fiance met him here at the hospital last night. the outcome for officer mccollough might be very different this morning if he hadn't had the wherewithal to apply first aid to himself. >> it's important to point out

that heç applied a tourniquet himself because he was bleeding profusely. his partner went to his aid and brought him to the hospital. >> and the mayor had his own conversation with officer james mccollough, just before he was taken upstairs to penn presbyterian hospital. more on that coming up in the next half hour. reporting live in university city, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. happening now, firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in upper darby, delaware county. this is a live picture of what's left of the home on ardmore avenue. here's how it looked as flames and smoke roared from the house around 2:30 this morning. neighbors tell us the family just bought the home in january and were in the process of fixing it up. they were almost finished. now the home is destroyed. fortunately, though, no one here was hurt. this morning, a man is under arrest following the shooting death of a little girl from philadelphia. maurice phillips is charged with

third degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare a child. police say he's the boyfriend of the child's mother. it was first believed that the 4-year-old girl was shot inside her kensington home by a 5-year-old sibling but police now say that phillips confessed telling them he was playing with the gun when it accidentally went off. the little girl's mother, posted this tribute to her daughter on facebook. it includes several baby pictures and the message, you will be missed. i love you with all of my heart. let's talk about sports now. the flyers quest for the cup continues tonight in south philadelphia. here's a live look at the wells fargo center where the flyers tray to turn around their playoff series with the washington capitals. comcast spectacore will be holing a tailgate party at 5:00 this afternoon, puck drops at

7:00. today is the day. tax day, the clock is ticking down to the midnight filing deadline. the normal april 15th deadline was changed because friday was a public holiday in washington, d.c. the irs doesn't enforce the deadline if april 15th falls on a holiday or weekend. the irs says it expects more than 5 million returns to be filed today alone. as of april 8th, almost 82 million tax players had received their refunds. the irs expects more than 13 million people to ask for extensions this year. you can request a six-month extension but that's only for filing. you still have to pay what you owe. according to the irs, the fastest way to file is through file link. you can request an extension through a paid tax preparer. today a new chapter begins for a school in montgomery county. cheltenham school district officials take part in a ground breaking ceremony for cedarbrook

the trend has been up and up. it will peak today. high temperature near 80 degrees this afternoon. the pollen is staying high for our area. allergy sufferers know it's been on the high side and the forecast is for that not to change, even though the temperatures will be coming down a bit after today. right now, they have come down quite a bit in south jersey. that's the kooltest spot. 37 degrees. there are 40s, too, especially farther inland. cinnaminson 47 degrees. clayton 40 degrees, vinelandç 41 and viney hollow at 39 degrees. here's your forecast, neighborhood by neighborhood. we've broken it down into zones and neighborhoods within those zones. south philadelphia 80 grows after a morning temperature of 45. the pennsylvania suburbs, phoenixville will get close to the 80 degree mark this afternoon. lehigh valley, easton will make it to 81 agreedegrees.

today, the u.s. supreme court will hear arguments in a challenge to president obama's immigration plan. the plan would spare more than 4 million undocumented immigrants from deportation and it would give them the legal right to hold a job. 26 states led by texas argue that no president should have the authority to unilaterally change immigration laws. the high court is expected to rule on this in june. this week, bill cosby's wife is scheduled to be questioned under oath in a defamation lawsuit filed against her husband. seven women claim the comedian branded them as liars after going public with their allegations of sex assault. camille cosby's deposition is scheduled to continue on tuesday in boston. she gave the first part of her deposition in february. meantime, bill cosby faces criminal charges in montgomery county where he's accused of drugging and molesting a former temple university employee in

2004. cosby has denied those allegations. a top public health official says pregnant women in the united states should not worry about contracting the zika virus, at least not yet. dr. anthony falchi with the national institutes of health warn we could start seeing local transmissions of the virus as we head into mosquito season. he's urging pregnant women to steer clear of countries with outbreaks. a camden county woman tested positive for zika after traveling to an affected country. new information this morning about the deadly quake in ecuador. the death toll now stands at 262 and it's expected to continue to climb. some survivors are being pulled alive from the rubble. the magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit saturday night, flattening

buildings and destroying roads. thousands are hurt and it's still not clear how many are missing. in japan, cleanup is slow going after two quakes struck there over the last few days. 42 people died in the powerful earthquakes. and the destruction is having a ripple effect on the country's economy. in fact, toyota, nissan and vehicles because of supply problems to the region. and japan's nikkei index fell as shares from automakers plunged this morning. back here in the u.s., take a look at this. this is a giant jumpg yard fire out in california. dozens of cars burned as high winds fanned the flames near los angeles yesterday. firefighters had their hands full trying to get on all sides of this blaze. it took more than two hours to get everything under control. fortunately, nobody was hurt. let's head to texas where heavy rain has led to widespread flooding in the northern part of the state. over the weekend, floodwaters

closed roads and caused hundreds of cancellations at dallas area airports. forecasters say the flood threat will continue through tomorrow. oh, man, take a look at this. nearly a foot of snow fell in the denver area over the weekend and the weight of that snow caused several carports to collapse at this apartment complex. the wet snow also broke tree limbs creating problems for drivers. no snow here. none in the forecast. here's a live look outside at boathouse row. temperatures are expected to soar today. we check in with meteorologist bill henley. he has the forecast focus on where you live. you can't get it anywhere else. >> i think we had enough of snow talk, too. there will be no sign of really even cold weather this morning. there are chilly spots, south jersey aat 37 degrees. at the bottom of the screen, here's your seven-day forecast for each part of our area, scrolling at the bottom of the screen every time i'm on air.

lehigh valley, 50 degrees, 50 in philadelphia. there's a range of temperatures. graduate hospital, society hill, low 50s. fox chase is 51 while it's 43 degrees in somerton. there are local variations which is why we have your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast. philadelphia, 80 degrees this afternoon. it will be turning a bill cooler tomorrow and wednesday. the summer preview is around for one day. even those temperatures are a bit above normal for this time of year. look at theç suburbs, well int the 70s this afternoon. then you get the cooler weather for tomorrow and wednesday. the breezier day will be tomorrow and then we'll be in the 60s on wednesday. the lehigh valley, upper 70s to near 80 degrees this afternoon. to the south, south jersey, warm one today. a little bit cooler with the shifting winds for tomorrow. and wednesday back in the 60s which is typical for this time of year. a bigger cooldown will come at

the jersey shore. by wednesday afternoon, 58 degrees. you'll enjoy bright sunshine, all day long. 68 degrees and delaware, look at those temperatures, sunny skies, middle 70s, some areas will get warmer than that. tomorrow, 70 degrees. and then 67 degrees on wednesday and delaware you'll feel the northwesterly winds tomorrow, up to 20 miles an hour. today we will see sunshine. no sign of any wet weather. we don't even have clouds in our area. look to the west and you'll see what is going to be coming our way late in the week. those are showers and thunderstorms. in fact, the houston area is getting pounded right now with heavy rainfall. look at those downpours. that's part of the system that will affect us, very end of the week and possibly into the weekend. as you can see the seven-day at the bottom of the screen. let's go beyond the seven day with the ten-day outlook. 80 for this afternoon. the shifting winds will close
